HEADS’ LETTER
APRIL 5, 2012
APPLAUSE FOR ALADDIN, JR.
Congratulations to the Warriors’ Pride Chorus for an extraordinary
production of the musical Aladdin Jr. The four performances thrilled the packed audiences of students in the morning and
guests in the evening. The costumes, staging, acting, singing, and dancing were a total delight. Mr. Michael LeBlanc,
director of the Warriors’ Pride Chorus, assembled a talented team of teachers and parent volunteers to support him and his
54 chorus members. They all earned a lengthy standing ovation!!
APPLAUSE FOR: ALL HANDS ON DECK” PROJECT IS ALMOST COMPLETED!
The 2012 Graduation Committee would like to THANK everyone for supporting their fundraisers and giving donations so
that they can now proudly fully fund the beautiful paver deck for the Middle School. They look forward to having you
join them for the official unveiling in May. Their last fundraiser is Wednesday, April 11th. You will be able to purchase
some beautiful flowers for $1 each to give to your wonderful teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.
APPLAUSE FOR: IDS GEOGRAPHY CHAMPION PLACED 7th IN STATE: On Friday,
March 30th, Matheus Caldeira (8th Grade) put his knowledge of the World to the test in Jacksonville, Florida. He had
already won the School-Wide Geography Bee and then he took the state-wide 70 question multiple choice test. His score
on that qualifying test made him one of 100 State Geography Bee participants.
United States Senator from Florida, Bill Nelson welcomed the participants and supporters to the Geography Bee. The 100
students were divided into 5 rooms. Two hours later, Matheus announced, to his father, Dr. Christiano Calderia and IDS
Social Studies Teacher, Mr. Shoe, that he was one of the 10 finalists, competing on stage for the State Geography Bee
title, and a trip to the National Geographic Bee in May! Matheus did extremely well, very poised and confident. He had
the opportunity to answer 10 questions in front of a packed auditorium. Matheus took 7th place, out of 100 students.
BRAVO Matheus!

TO THE THESPIAN TEAM, FROM AN APPRECIATIVE PARENT What an amazing experience the State Jr.
Thespian competition was for our kids. The
organization and atmosphere of camaraderie and
support for each performer fostered by the
teachers was amazing. The effort was rewarded
by every act medaling and “Superior” after
“Superior” ratings. Thank you for all your
dedication and for going “above and beyond” for
our Jr. Thespians.
Sincerely,
Cathy Jonas

FIFTH GRADE PREPARES FOR INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE EXHIBITION. What does that mean? As part of their final year of the IB Primary Years Programme the 5th grade students are
expected to carry out an extended, collaborative inquiry project, known as the exhibition, under
the guidance of their teachers. The exhibition represents a significant event in the life of both
the school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the programme and sharing them
with the whole school community. It is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of
the student profile that they have been developing throughout their experience at IDS. It is also
considered a culminating experience marking the transition from our IB Primary Years
Programme (PYP) to the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Community Outreach – included in this week’s Thursday folder is a Parent Community
Involvement Questionnaire.
• Are you on the board of a charity/non-profit organization (i.e. Humane Society,
American Red Cross, Support Our Troops, etc.)?
• Is there a charity/non-profit organization you would like to help support and for
which you have a strong connection/affiliation?
• Is there a community concern/topic that you work to educate others about?
If you answered yes to any (or all!) of the above questions, the 5th grade students would
love your help! They are working on their IB Exhibition project discovering real world
issues and how they can make an impact on our community. Please fill our the questionnaire
and a 5th grade teacher and/or 5th grade student may contact you about your organization
(charity/community topic). If you have any questions, please contact nancy Leach, Community
Outreach Chair, at [email protected] or (813) 295-2020.
You can help Fifth Grade accomplish the Community Outreach Project goals!
