CMYK Vol. 10 • Issue 47 RNI No. MAHENG/2007/21778|Postal Regn. No. NMB/154/2014-16/Vashi MDG Post Office Navi Mumbai, Friday 24 June, 2016 CIDCO inaugurates bridge near Kopra underpass at Kharghar By Chandrashekhar Hendve KHARGHAR: The newly constructed bridge across the existing channel near Kopra underpass is opened up to traffic from 22nd June 2016 at 11:00 am. The bridge was inaugurated at the hands of Shri K.K. Varkhedakar Chief Engineer (Navi Mumbai), in the presence of Shri P.W. Dahake Superintending Engineer & Administrator (Kharghar-I), Shri G. J. Dalal Executive Engineer (Kharghar -II), Shri Pravin Pande, Assistant Police Inspector Kharghar and CIDCO officers of Kharghar Node. The existing narrow bridge (3.5m width) connecting Kharghar node to Sion-Panvel express way near Kopra underpass was inadequate to cater to and fro traffic. It also led to traffic jam and inconvenience to commuters. Hence, there was a continuous demand for additional bridge or widening of the existing bridge to maintain smooth flow of traffic. To resolve the grievances, CIDCO decided to construct another bridge of 5.0 m width parallel to existing light vehicle bridge to cater the existing traffic. The existing bridge shall be used by the traffic going from Kharghar Node to Sion-Panvel highway and newly constructed bridge will be used by the traffic entering from highway Cont. on pg. 3 20 Zhunka Bhakar stalls sealed By Vijay Bhor / Chandrashekhar Hendve CBD-BELAPUR: Following an order by Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the property tax department of NMMC has sealed 20 Zhunka Bhakar stalls across the city. In June 2000, following the withdrawal of Zhunka Bhakar scheme, the state government had directed the local bodies to take back possession of Zhunka Bhakar stalls allotted by them. A group of affected stall owners challenged the order in the Bombay high court and later in the Supreme Court which dismissed the writ and the appeal on 6 June, 2006. But the allottees continued to keep the possession of the stalls because the local bodies had not shown any initiative to vacate them. It was left to Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to CMYK activate the order. Accordingly, the property tax department personnel went round and sealed 20 stalls across the city. In the case of two stalls, the authorities had to hold their hands because the occupants claimed that they were situated on private property. Segregation of wet and dry garbage was initiated at the beginning of the year itself when the civic body distributed 22,000 garbage bins across the societies and 600 community bins in the NMMC area. While the society bins have 120-litre and 240litre capacity, the community bins are of 1,100 litres. As per the official records from the solid waste management department, before the segregation of wet was strictly implemented from May 30 onwards, of the total 650 metric tonnes of garbage collected, the segregated wet waste was around 55 metric tonnes while the segregated dry waste was around 1.1 metric tonnes. Within three days from the start of the compulsory segregation process, the total amount of segregated wet waste went upto 131 metric tonnes while the segregated dry waste went upto 27 metric tonnes. “Residents are responding fast and positively to our waste segregation instructions and have already started implementing it strictly. At few places, where we found it is still not being followed properly, we have given strict orders to follow it and from the next day they have started following it,” said Tushar Pawar, DMC, solid waste management department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Officials also in- formed that presently the amount of segregated wet waste has gone upto 217 metric tonnes while the dry waste has gone upto 47 metric tonnes. Explaining what goes in the wet and dry waste the official said, “All biodegradable waste is categorized as wet waste. And all non-biodegradable waste which can be recycled is dry waste. In certain wards in the city we had already made provisions for people to give dry and wet waste separately and the collection is also done separately. We have now been implementing the same process across the city,” stressed the official. The city generates around 650 metric tonnes of garbage on a daily basis under the municipal jurisdiction. The building Regency Tower in Sector-14 Nerul had been issued Commencement Certificate by the civic body in 2010. The builders started work and erected the structure to the Violation of CRZ rules height of 18 storeys when the new CRZ or Coastal Regulation Zone laws came into force. That law showed the building as falling under the Coastal Zone and hence there was no chance of it getting the final Occupation Certificate or OC. Hence the builders stopped the work half way. Noting the discrepancy, NMMC asked the builders to pull down the still unoccupied building on their own and issued the 24-hour notice. “Since the builders have not shown any interest in demolishing the structure, NMMC has decided to take up the work and recover the cost from the builders,” said DMC in charge of anti-encroachment department, Subhash Ingle. Ranjeet Om on the other hand is a malicious, opportunist MLA. The problem sparks when Chaudhry’s justness and fight against the Land Acquisition Bill, comes in the way of Om’s political and personal ambitions. Chaudhry’s son, Raghu and Zainab are best friends. Zainab is set to be married to Saleem. Saleem is a fair, reserved and peace loving individual who loves Zainab deeply. Raghu too loves Zainab but deems it useless to reveal his feelings to his best friend, as it will only hurt the people he cares for. Mustakeem, Saleem’s cousin and a religious fanatic, is against Zainab’s friendship with a Hindu boy. He questions their intentions and plants the seed of suspicion in the otherwise sensible Saleem. Fuelled by his fanaticism, brainwashed by religious sentiments & political rivals, Mustakeen is seen as an easy pawn to aggravate. Clouded in thought, Mustakeem kills Raghu under the guise of saving Zainab from him and protecting their Muslim girls from supposed ploys for conversion. The situation gets a communal twist with Om taking advantage of the death of Chaudhary’s son, & chooses to bring religion on the center stage. Despite the intervention of the chief minister, the matter snowballs and takes unexpected, ugly turns and becomes a national issue in question. The pharma sector opening up will have far reaching consequences in the lives of the millions in the country. The drugs must be affordable to the people and the sector should not be left to the vagaries of the market. The govt. should play an interventionist role here. And it is in the drug industry that the MNCs are immediately interested due to better prospects. As far as the pharma sector is concerned, many life saving drugs are not manufactured and distributed in India even by the MNC pharma companies having manufacturing infrastructure in India. The patients who are in dire need of such medicines with regular and assured supplies have to depend on their limited foreign sources to get them imported, by paying exorbitant customs duties. To help them overcome such difficulties, the GOI should convince those who want to directly invest in pharma sector to allocate a specified percentage of such investments for manufacturing such drugs in India, as a part of their corporate social responsibility. As an incentive to such investments, the profit earned from the sale of such life saving drugs in India, can be allowed to be repatriated without any tax in India. This will also be in tune with the Make in India policy with the achievement of a social goal of making life saving drugs easily available in the domestic market at affordable prices. India now NEEDS BRAIN POWER combined with Local resources that would generate Jobs to the 400 million underemployed Human resource. When all doors are closed, the government should turn to foreign investors to maintain the momentum. The foreign investors have much more capital, expertise and experience in taking up these big ticket investments. There is going to be glut of investors in pharma sector particularlyh, since profits can be realized in quickly. The govt has its task cut out. It should carefully choose an investor who can give the best possible service without jacking up the price.
