Welcome
welcome
International Wine Challenge 2015
Last Year the IWC made a fundamental change to the judging schedule introducing two separate
tastings: Tranche 1 and Tranche 2. This new schedule offers producers, particularly those from
the southern hemisphere, greater opportunity to maximise the promotional impact of winning
an IWC medal.
Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 together form the IWC 2015 competition and the process, tasting and
judging procedures are the same. Producers can decide which time best fits into their schedule
and therefore which Tranche to enter.
The medals announced after each Tranche are Commended, Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Trophy
winners of the IWC 2015 competition will be selected from the combined results of both Tranche 1
and Tranche 2 Gold medal wines and announced on 18 May 2015. The prestigious Champions (in
the categories Red, White, Rosé, Sparkling, Fortified and Sweet) will then be selected from the
Trophy winners and revealed at the IWC Awards Dinner on 16 July 2015.
This new schedule, with two medal release dates, gives producers the choice to enter the
competition at the best time for their production and sales cycles. Better timing also means greater
opportunity to successfully promote an IWC medal to clients and consumers.
“For us at Camel Valley, the International Wine Challenge is the most
important wine competition for us to enter. The IWC heavily publicise
the results and the news of an award winning wine will get to all the
important buyers, journalist and customers around the world. All
tasting is blind, with wines from every region, giving the competition
maximum credibility.”
Sam Lindo, Winemaker, Camel Valley
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Please note wines of a particular vintage and non-vintage wine can only be entered once, in either
Tranche 1 or Tranche 2. Different vintages of the same wine can be entered in one or both Tranches.
FOR EXAMPLE:
•Château Belle Bouteille 1997 can be entered in either Tranche 1 or Tranche 2, but not both.
•If Château Belle Bouteille 1997 has been entered in Tranche 2 then Château Belle Bouteille
2003 can be entered in either Tranche 1 or Tranche 2, but not both.
•10 Year Old Aged Tawny NV can be entered in either Tranche 1 or Tranche 2, but not both.

International Wine Challenge 2015
The Judges and the
Judging Process
The International Wine Challenge employs expert judges from all over the world, many of whom are
Masters of Wine. This ensures that only the most experienced and respected palates judge the
wine at the IWC.
The IWC operates a tiered system of judges, based on a tasting panel usually consisting of five
people. Each panel has a Panel Chairman, who leads a team of 4 judges, consisting of one senior
judge, two judges and one associate judge. The IWC’s resident Co-Chairmen oversee the judging
panels, assist them with any tough decisions and ensure only deserving wines win a medal.

The Co Chairmen

Tim is one of Britain’s leading wine writers, with more than 25 awards to his
name, including the 2009 Louis Roederer Wine Columnist of the Year. He is a
columnist for Harpers Wine & Spirit and also writes for Woman and Home, The World
of Fine Wine, Wine Luxe, The Economist’s Intelligent Life and his own website,
www.timatkin.com. Tim appears regularly on BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen, as well
as running his own wine school at Vinoteca in London.
Oz Clarke

Winecellars. He now operates an independent wine consultancy service, focused on
hotels and restaurants. Born and raised in New Zealand he has a relaxed approach to
wine and is an entertaining speaker, hosting many corporate and public events as
well as industry seminars. He teaches at the Christie’s Wine Course and at the Wine
& Spirit Education Trust, as well as conducting bespoke courses for anyone from
beginners to MW students. He writes for a number of publications, including
Restaurant magazine and has judged widely in competitions around the world.
Charles Metcalfe

International Wine Challenge in 1984. He is also in demand as an international wine
judge, and has judged in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal
and South Africa. As well as writing books on Spanish and Portuguese wines, and on

IWC Discovery Tasting
A platform to the UK market
Looking for UK representation?
The Discovery Tasting provides a unique platform for
IWC competition entrants who are seeking
representation in the UK. Only wines that don’t yet have
an importer to the UK are eligible to participate. Buyers
from all channels, including supermarkets, agents,
independents, major restaurant and hotel chains, attend
the IWC Discovery Tasting.
Wines are presented in three sections and grouped by
country and style, enabling buyers to easily browse and
find products relevant to them. The three sections are
off-trade independent (independent merchants) off-trade
multiple (high-street, supermarkets) and on-trade
(restaurants, bars, hotels).
To enter the Discovery Tasting, please see point 2 on
the entry form and choose the section in which the wine
should be presented. The fee for participating at the
Discovery Tasting is £49/€61.25/US$83.30 per entry/
wine and two additional samples are required.
The cost to ship entries, using the IWC shipping deal
with Hellmann Beverage Logistics, that include the
Discovery Tasting is £49.10/€61.38/$83.47.

entry form explanatory notes
International Wine Challenge 2015
Entry Form Explanatory Notes
Please read this information when completing the entry form.
1. Tranche 1 / Tranche 2
Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 together form the IWC 2015
competition. Producers can decide which Tranche to
enter - but wines of a particular vintage and nonvintage wine can only be entered once, in either
Tranche 1 or Tranche 2. Different vintages of the same
wine can be entered in one or both Tranches. For full
details and deadlines please see pages 2-3.
2. Discovery Tasting
The Discovery Tasting provides a platform to the UK
market. Only wines that don’t yet have an importer are
eligible. The cost for entry is £49 / €61.25 / $83.30.
Two (2) extra samples of your wine are required. The
cost to ship wines entered into the Discovery Tasting
using the IWC shipping deal with Hellmann Beverage
Logistics is £49.10/€61.38/$83.47. Please see page 8
for full details.
Select where you would most like to target buyers
from. At the Discovery tasting your wines will be split
into two separate areas, off-trade and on-trade for
ease of selection by the buyers. Wines are also
grouped by country, enabling tasters to browse
through any section in which they are looking to fill
gaps on their shelves or lists.
3. Wine Producer Details
Please answer precisely. This ensures that your wine is
in the correct tasting group. Correct grouping is essential
for the fair and consistent judging and any incomplete or
incorrect information may penalise your wine.
4. Wine Details
Wine Name: Any variation between the label and the
entry form invites confusion for us, and may mean that
your certificates are printed with the wrong wine name.
Please do not include vintage even if it is on your label.
Vintage: This ensures that wines are grouped
correctly, fairly and consistently for tasting. Note that
wines tasted must be from a single blend.
Bottle Size: This informs consumers of the quantity of
wine obtained for the quoted price.
Closure: This helps us with the event fault correlation
and also identification.
Glass Colour: This is related to environmental
information and assists with fault correlation.
Barcode Number: If the wine has a barcode it will assist
us in setting up the tasting. Occasionally we cannot
identify the wine just from the label. A barcode helps the
IWC team in identifying the correct wine and ensures it is
entered into the correct category for judging.
Official Quality Status: If your wine has an Official
Quality Status, it ensures that wines are grouped
correctly, fairly and consistently for tasting.
12
Country: The country, region and sub-region details
enable us to group wines correctly, fairly and
consistently for tasting.
Wine Colour: This is essential information for grouping
wines and vital for consumers.
Wine Style: This is essential information for grouping
wines and vital for consumers.
Residual Sugar Level: This ensures that wines are
grouped correctly, fairly and consistently for tasting.
Oaked: This ensures that wines are grouped correctly,
fairly and consistently for tasting.
Alcohol Level: Wine Duty levels are calculated using
this information.
Classifications: This information allows consumers to
search for wine of a particular regime. Vegetarian refers
to wines produced without the use of additives that
required animals to be killed. The use of eggs and dairy
processing aids is acceptable for a vegetarian wine.
Vegan refers to wines made using no animal derived
ingredients. A Fair Trade wine must have Fair Trade
certification.
5. Grapes
Please state the principal three (3) grapes and
percentages. For example Merlot 60%, Carbernet
Sauvignon 30%, Cabernet Franc 10%.
6. Production and Retail
The producer’s contact details are essential, they
validate the wine entered and are used for notification
of results to the entrant and the media.
UK Importer: This is essential for us to locate the UK
stockists of your wines for publicity purposes so
customers can find your wines in the shops.
Number of bottles produced: Total Production for
vintage or year.
FOB Price Per Bottle (if NOT available in the UK):
Duty levels are calculated using this figure. This
information is also required for wines entered into the
Discovery Tasting.
Is this the first year of production for this wine,
cuvee or vineyard: This information may make your
wine eligible for the James Rogers Trophy.
Available in the UK: This information is very important
for publicity purposes. If your wines are unavailable
this will be quoted in the IWC mobile app and on our
website.
UK Retail Price per bottle: This information dictates
the wine’s eligibility for a ‘Great Value Wine of the Year’
award and is also used in publications, book, app, and
websites.
Bottles available to the UK market: This information
dictates the wine’s eligibility for a ‘Great Value Wine of
the Year’ award.
