Our children are back in school
exploring new opportunities such as
football, volleyball, choir, orchestra
and art! Many of our children have
the opportunity to experience extracurricular activities and think about the
possibility of higher education for the
first time in their academic careers.
Do you remember the cover of the last newsletter? It pictured
the seven Boysville residents who graduated from Judson
High School. Those seven graduates are now students at
Northeast Lakeview College. Currently, Boysville is supporting
13 young adults through higher education! We are anxious to
see them succeed as they embark on their journeys.
Kudos to the dedicated Auction committee, Board of
Directors, generous donors and volunteers for their hard
work in producing another record year at the Wildest
Auction in the West! Our Day of Care reached a record
high—bringing in over $90,000! A day of care provides food,
shelter, clothing, medical and dental care, therapeutic services
and recreational activities for each child living at Boysville.
Now, as we head into the holiday season, I again call on the
generosity of the San Antonio community to help fulfill all
of the Christmas wishes and dreams of our children. The
holidays are a wonderful time for family and friends to
come together. Our children have a “family”—house parents
and child care staff that live, eat, and share all the joys and
challenges of daily life. That team works together to provide
“home” and “family” for children who otherwise would have
neither. Our job during the holiday season is to ensure each
child be remembered during a season that can bring joy and
sadness at the same time.
In closing, I want to extend a special congratulations to
Ned Gates on his retirement with 18 years of outstanding
dedication to the children of Boysville. He will truly be missed.
I thank you for your continued very generous support
and invite any of you who have not been out to the campus
to schedule a tour to meet the staff and see our programs
in action.
Have a great Boysville day!

Back to School
From the latest fashions to the freshest
haircuts and hairstyles are all signs that school is now
of school supplies to ensure our children were equipped for
another year. These donations could not have come at a better
time, as Boysville Title 1 funds were drastically cut this school
year. Title 1 funds are a major source for Boysville’s education
program as it helps with school supplies, tutor salaries, and
incentives. The school year is going really well! The library is
full of residents during study hours, attendance in school is
high, and the first nine weeks of classes were just completed.

in session. The best way for any child to kick off the school
year is by having school supplies. Thanks to the efforts of Argo
Insurance Group, Converse Lions Club, and Randolph A1,
Boysville residents were able to have a successful start to
school. Together, these organizations donated over $700 worth

That’s exactly what the Zumba program is all about.
Zumba combines Latin and International music with a fun
and effective workout system. This summer, Boysville had
Zumba instructor, Ashley Alexis, come to our campus twice
a week to teach a class to staff and residents.
CAMP
Independence
Plumbing
Problems
Boysville continues to be plagued
by plumbing problems on campus.
Due to the drought over the summer,
Boysville has experienced seven
water main breaks, causing water to
be shut off on campus as emergency
repairs are needed.
Each repair costs between $2,500
– $5,000 depending on how deep
the pipes run, the width of the pipes
and how long it takes to repair the
problem. The water main breaks are
unexpected and many times are not
in our budget plan.
On the national level, approximately 20,000 youth will turn 18 while
living in foster care placements. Research shows most 18 year olds have not
developed the skills necessary to help them become self-sufficient adults. It has
been reported by foster care alumni that due to the lack of independent living
skills they have experienced one or more of the following hardships: did not
receive their high school diploma or GED; did not attend or complete higher
education certifications or degrees; experienced unemployment and/or unable
to maintain a job; homelessness; alcohol and/or drug abuse; incarceration; teen
pregnancy; continued cycle of emotional and/or physical abuse; mental and
physical health problems; and dependence on public assistance.
With this in mind, the Transitional Living Program decided to make a
difference and implemented a week-long camp to empower the youth of
Boysville, 13 years of age and older, to learn and practice Preparation for Adult
Living Skills (PALS). The topics experienced during Camp Independence were
health and wellness, transportation, job skills, housing, money management,
general safety, cooking skills, personal and interpersonal skills, a career fair,
and planning for the future. Each youth was challenged to “Make a Difference”
in their life so that they would not become a foster care statistic.
Unfortunately, our campus is
experiencing the wear and tear
of almost 30 years. Aging utilities
and severe weather conditions
have caught up with Boysville. It is
becoming a common occurrence to
address emergencies as they occur
due to the age of the facility.
Among the concerns are updating
aged and over-used plumbing,
repairing breaks and leaks and
combining shifting foundations. To
replace the entire plumbing system
would cost approximately $250,000
– $300,000.
Boysville is undertaking a program
of targeted capital improvements.
We are seeking funds to repair and/
or replace the water supply system,
internal roads, cottage windows, the
emergency electrical supply and paint
the cottages. If you are interested in
funding the project, please contact
the Development staff at (210) 659-1901
for more information.

Team Up Challenge
As an expansion of the “No Bullying” campaign,
10 Boysville residents participated in the Silver and
Black Team Up Challenge. Boysville partnered with
the Fisher House at Lackland AFB this summer.
Residents helped move furniture and tore down,
rebuilt and painted the fencing around the air
conditioning units at two of the houses. Our young
adults were proud to provide help for recently
wounded service men and women and their
families living at Fisher House.

Love”
“When you love what you do,

Labor of
—Ned Gates
Imagine never having to work a day of your life.
For Ned Gates, being employed by Boysville was
never work. Ned says, “When you love what you
do, it’s not work. It’s a labor of love.”
Ned started his career at Boysville in 1993 as the Director of Recreational
Programs. Ned spent countless hours coaching basketball games, training
our residents to compete in a variety of sports, coordinating campus events,
supervising recreational activities; but most importantly, Ned was a mentor,
friend and teacher to many of our children.
It was not rare for Ned to accompany our young adults on college trips, pay a
visit during College Family Days or give our residents advice about day to day
life. Ned always treated the children with respect and loved them as his own.
Ned worked tirelessly to ensure our children had a fun and loving place to
call home.
Every year as a graduation gift, Ned would give every graduating senior the Dr.
Seuss book entitled, “Oh the Places You’ll Go” with a personal note and some
words of wisdom. As a retirement gift, several Boysville residents wrote and
illustrated a book for Ned called “Oh the Places You’ll Go: Retirement Edition.”
Current residents, staff, former residents and friends gathered in the gym to wish
Ned a happy retirement.
After 18 years of serving our children, the Boysville family wishes Ned Gates a
happy retirement. Thank you for your love and dedication to hundreds of
Boysville children!

AWARD
T
Gordon V. Hartman
he Boysville Board of Directors is honored to
name Gordon V. Hartman as the 2012 Arthur
O’Krent Humanitarian Award recipient.
Gordon Hartman is a philanthropist and former businessman
who was born and raised in San Antonio. At age 15, while
attending a local seminary, he started his own landscaping
business. By age 19, he had earned and saved enough to begin
his homebuilding business and by the age of 23 had started a
land development company.
From his small efficiency apartment, Gordon founded Gordon
Hartman Homes in 1983 and began to build homes for low to
moderate income families. Over the next 22 years, he grew his
company into the largest locally owned homebuilding and land
development enterprise in San Antonio.
In 2005, Gordon sold his companies. That same year, he
established The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, to which
he and his wife, Maggie, have donated $15 million to date to
pursue their dream of helping children and adults with special
needs. Their devotion to this cause is inspired by their 18-yearold daughter, Morgan, who was born with cognitive and
physical special needs.
In 2007, Gordon recognized the tremendous need for
accessible outdoor facilities for individuals with special needs.
So he made another dream come true—the April 2010 grand
opening of Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first ultraaccessible family fun park designed with special-needs kids
and adults in mind as well as their family members, caregivers
and friends. This unique park has now welcomed more than
100,000 guests from all 50 states and 33 countries. Gordon’s
conviction that families of special needs individuals have
increased demands on both their financial and emotional
resources, led to his commitment to maintain free admission
to the park for those with special needs.
Also in 2010, the STAR Soccer Complex began operations
adjacent to Morgan’s Wonderland. This 75 acre soccer facility
hosts tournaments, league play, and regular practices for
teams from across Texas which helps provide funding for
programs, operations and expansion at Morgan’s Wonderland.
Plans to bring professional soccer to San Antonio have also
been finalized with the San Antonio Scorpions FC beginning
pro soccer play next season with all proceeds also benefiting
Morgan’s Wonderland.
In August 2011, Gordon opened a school—Monarch
Academy. It will provide students with special needs a unique
learning environment that will enable them to reach their
maximum individual potential. Initially the school will serve
students ages 12 – 24 and plans for expansion in the future
call for a 21,000 square foot learning facility on a 2½ acre site
adjacent to Morgan’s Wonderland.
The Arthur O’Krent Award is given to an individual who, by
civic action, demonstrates love and concern for the well being
of children within our community. Past recipients of the
award include Fully Clingman, Tom Frost, Governor Dolph
Briscoe, Dr. Dale Wood, Edith McAllister, Reverend Buckner
Fanning, Rosemary Kowalski, Bill Greehey, Judge Peter Sakai,
Ruben Escobedo, Harvey E. Najim, and Dr. George and Mrs.
Kymberly Rapier.

Happy Ending New Beginning
E
ach child living at Boysville longs to belong
to a happy, loving family. Many wish to
return home, while others hope to find their
place with a new family. For Sabby, Kassie,
Fernando and Aden their wish has been granted.
On November 8th, the four siblings living at Boysville
were adopted by Jason and Mandy Hand, foster parents
to the sibling group and employees of Boysville. We have
been “home” to these children for over 3 years. We’ve
watched them all grow and mature. Aden arrived when
he was 5 months old and is now 4 years old and will be
starting school next year.
Jason and Mandy say, “Every day is an adventure for all of
us and we love it! We all enjoy camping, bike riding, hiking,
and roller skating … anything that creates a memory!”
We would like to congratulate the Hand family and
wish them the best as they continue their journey as
one big, happy family.
