If the at-home parent suddenly becomes ill
while the military member is deployed or
on duty, who will care for the child? Get
your plan in place. Pick up an Emergency
Child Care Plan at the MFRC to create a
plan for your family.
Emergency Services
The MFRC Emergency Services Program
offers support and resources to individuals
and families during emergencies related
to child care, pregnancy, and any other
urgent family situation. Call the MFRC at
250-363-2640 (toll free: 1-800-353-3329)
if you have an emergency.
Employment and Education
Support
For employment and education support,
the MFRC refers families to employment
agencies in the greater community. The
MFRC website (www.esquimaltmfrc.com)
has links for the local employment agencies and education services. You can also
check out www.workbc.ca.
Imagination Library
The Imagination Library, funded through
donations, is offered as a way to enhance
literacy and develop resilience in children
as they experience the challenges of the
military lifestyle, and to show community support to parents in caring for their
children. Families with babies born in
2014 to serving regular force members and
class B/C reservists at CFB Esquimalt are
eligible to register. Children will receive
one book per month by mail until their
fifth birthday (dependent on continued
funding). Please contact the MFRC for
more information.
MFRC 24-Hour Information Line
MFRC staff members are ready to take
your call - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
They can answer your questions, provide

If you walk into CPAC on a Wednesday
evening around 6:30, you are bound to
hear chatter and laughter coming from a
room just past the entrance way, receptionist desks and lounge chairs.
Inside you’ll find a group of women,
hot beverages, snacks, and babbling infants who are being passed around and
played with. Signs decorate the tables
and share information about upcoming
events and different supports the MFRC
has for military members and their families. If it happens to be a special occasion,
a craft table may be set up at the back of
the room.
While the faces of the people may
change, the atmosphere of the Deployment Coffee Nights stays the same. It’s
a warm and welcoming environment for
those whose significant others are away,
or for anyone else who just wants to come
and hang out. And while the majority of
those who go are women, men are more
than welcome to attend, because Deployment Coffee Nights are one of the ways

What do space cushions have
to do with motorcycle riding?
Shelley Fox
Staff Writer
This was it; 2014 would be the year I
learned to ride a motorcycle and ride with
the pack.
None of my friends would ride with
me unless I took a proper “learn to ride”
course. And, as if the hog gods were listening, an ad appeared in the Lookout
newspaper for “Learn to Ride” motorcycle
training.
I could almost hear leather-clad angels
cooing “ahhhhh.”
With my application accepted and Class
6/8 Learner’s License obtained, I was set
for the two evenings of four hour classroom theory, and two full days of learning
on a 250cc motorbike – courtesy of Learn
to Ride Motorcycle Training Ltd.
In hopes of staying ahead of the pack, I
eagerly studied the ICBC “Learn To Ride
Smart” booklet.
A few days later, I was seated next to four
other rider wannabes at the Econo Lodge
Gorge View board room, our eyes set on
Richard Beaumont, a Petty Officer Second
Class sailor who has 14 years experience
on two wheels, and seven as a certified
trainer.
He tossed out bike jargon that I found
novel such as “space cushion.” No, not a
silver lamé throw pillow, but a descriptive
term for the necessary distance in front of
you that allows time enough to stop or react safely.
Or “road snakes,” the literal meaning
sounds more fantastical than the actual.
It pertains to the wiggly tar lines meant
to repair the cracks in the road. They are
slippery, especially when wet and are to be
avoided where possible.
In terms of real world threats to a motorcyclist, road snakes are on the lower end
of our worries. We learned that everything
is a potential hazard when you are riding,
and it is best to practice SIPDE: scan,
identify, predict, decide and execute.
From the classroom, we ventured to a
parking lot on base where we each straddled a loaner motorbike. For the others it
came roaring to life easily- I kept forgetting to turn the ignition key or the gas
swittch (petcock) or pull the clutch in
or set the choke. The learning curve for
learning to ride is steep and unforgiving.
Slow speed control, while not the stuff
to smatter bugs on one’s faceplate, trains
a rider to start smoothly from a full stop.
It was tough trying to find the sweet spot
where the engine begins to engage as the
clutch is released. My left hand ached for
a week.
Coordination of the controls didn’t happen flawlessly. The challenge outweighed
my patience.
Many of the shiny new cones lining the
course – making a figure eight, slalom,
and u-turn - were now wearing tire tracks.
We buzzed and choked, stuttered and
stalled, and eventually traversed through
the cones seamlessly. The course design
ensured our skills progressed as the hours
ticked by. By the end of day one, we made
a full trip around the base.
On the second day we revved up the
throttle and went faster, adding to our
skills higher speed turns, emergency stopping, and debris avoidance.
The rule “you will go where you look”
is true. I experienced a few gut wrenching
moments that thankfully did not lead to
any mishaps.
To round out the morning we took a
mock skills test designed like the course
ICBC puts new riders through. Once we
had ridden through the course to the satisfaction of our instructor we were cleared
to ride on the street in the afternoon.
PO2 Beaumont laid out the rules, the
route we would take, and who would lead
the group.
We rode in formation to downtown Victoria and back again. We stopped every
so often to discuss what was done right
or wrong, what needed specific improvement, and who would lead the next part
of the ride.
We trialed lane positioning, safe lane
change, and shoulder checks.
By the end of the Sunday, we were ready
to take ICBC’s motorcycle skills and license tests. We also received a MARPAC
Riders patch to display our membership.
When we signed up for the course we also
became part of the MARPAC Riders Club.
The club’s mandate is to provide these
three aspects of club stewardship:
Shelley Fox sits on one of the Learn
to Ride 250cc motorbikes at the Jetty
parking lot where she was practicing
the skills needed to pass the ICBC
Motorcycle Skills test.
• to promote the social aspect of group
riding
• to assist in self-help repair, and
• to provide a mentorship program
geared towards new riders
The club goes a step further by providing
a supervisor to ride with a new rider, and
to help them practice for the skills test.
To ride as a fully licensed biker will take
two more tests. The skills test and the
Class 6 road test. For now, I just want to
keep practicing so I don’t lose the skills I
worked so hard to gain.
The entire experience was intense and required determination and fortitude. PO2
Beaumont’s shows a clear dedication to
teaching how to ride safely, and the course
follows a progressive learning curve. I was
able to build my skills and confidence with
each module. I am thrilled and cautiously
optimistic about my future as a competent
and safe motorcycle rider.

A quick guide to military acronyms
Christina Van Starkenburg
MFRC Volunteer
Ever since my husband joined the military, his vocabulary has changed. Acronyms
started appearing out of nowhere and words
began to take on new meanings. Naturally,
he assumed that I would understand what
he was talking about. Sometimes, I feel
like Marlin from Finding Nemo when he
exclaims: “It’s like he’s trying to speak to
me, I know it. Look, you’re really cute, but
I can’t understand what you’re saying,” after
Squirt tells him how to leave the East Australian Current.
I know he doesn’t always mean to confuse
me—although there are times he specifically uses a new term just to irritate me—it
just happens. The new jargon is insidious
and my husband unconsciously slips it into
the conversation. But, whenever I’m feeling
particularly frustrated, I remind myself that
he too had to learn the lingo.
Once, when he was in his Basic Military Officer Qualification, an instructor
rambled off an acronym-filled sentence to
him and a bunch of other recruits. Then
when they asked the instructor for clarification, he simply remarked “Yes, the military
does like their TLAs.” When the recruits’
blank looks didn’t go away, the instructor
realized that they wouldn’t know what that
meant either, and explained all of the acronyms he just used. For the record a TLA is
a “three-letter acronym.” Like I said, they
don’t mean to do it, but when you are surrounded by people who do understand it’s
easy to assume that everyone else will too.
However, since that’s not true, I’ve decided to compile a list of terms my husband
throws out at me.
Not all of them are difficult to understand.
I do know what a deck is, and that port
is left and starboard is right. I can figure
out that the deck-head is the ceiling. But
then there is the heads. For those of you
who don’t know, it means the bathroom.
While I am sure there is some reasonable
explanation as to why the heads means the
bathroom, it seems like some people felt
as though they were too good to call it the
bathroom, the restroom, the powder room,
the john, or any of the terms we don’t use
in polite company.
In addition to the previously mentioned
terms, here are some other ones I’ve encountered:
For: Forward or Front
Aft: After or Back
ULO: University Liaison Officer
F&E: Furniture and Effects
1IC: First in Command
2IC: Second in Command
BOR: Base Orderly Room
CO: Commanding Officer
HHT: House Hunting Trip
MFRC: Military Family Resource Centre
PSP: Personnel Support Programs
DND: Department of National Defence
CAF: Canadian Armed Forces
VTC: Video Teleconferencing
DC School: Damage Control School
OOD: Officer of the Day
OOW: Officer of the Watch
Recce: Reconnaissance
MARS: Maritime Surface and Sub-Surface [officer], also an affectionate title for
the head of the MARS department.
AMARS: The assistant to the head of the
MARS department.
HOD: Head of Department
GIB: Guy in Back (In an armoured group,
the GIB sits on the back of armoured reconnaissance vehicles allowing him/her to
quickly hop off and check around corners.)
Bladed: Getting someone in trouble unnecessarily.
Christina is a writer, MFRC volunteer,
military spouse, and a new parent who moved
to Victoria this past year.

Second Editions mark submarine centennial
Shawn O’Hara
Staff Writer
Unbeknownst to most Canadians, Canada has a long and colourful submarine
service history – to be exact, 100 years of
service this year.
To honour the centenary,
Julie H. Ferguson’s publishers have released updated, second editions of her two books:
“Through a Canadian Periscope: The Story of the Canadian Submarine Program” and
“Deeply Canadian: New Submarines for a New Millennium.”
“Canada has had such vibrant
history with regard to its submarines, it’s a shame more people
don’t know about it,” says Ferguson, a retired reserve naval officer. “With my books, I always
wanted to inform Canadians on
the subject, and hopefully with
renewed interest due to the centenary I can reach a few more.”
She was inspired to write both
books when she asked her husband
LCdr James S. Ferguson (Ret’d),
who was captain from 1979-1981
of the now decommissioned submarine HMCS Okanagan, where
she could read more on the subject
of the Canadian submarine service.
“He was surprised when he realized
there weren’t any books,” says Ferguson. “And so was I.”
That realization encouraged Ferguson to write one, and a year later
set her on a decade-long project that
would take her across Canada and
the United Kingdom, speaking with
veterans, serving members, and historians, and delving deep into archives.
Her first book, “Through a Canadian Periscope” explores the history
of the Canadian submarine program, beginning in 1914 with the
purchase of CC1 and CC2. The acquisition of Canada’s first two submarines is the stuff of Hollywood
movies, filled with backroom deals
and a clandestine escape.
She also interviewed all but one of
the Second World War Canadian
submariners, gaining invaluable firsthand
accounts of their service in all theatres and
all types of submarines, including fullsized and midgets, X-craft and chariots.
Ferguson recalls reservist Freddie
Sherwood, twice-decorated Commanding
50 • CFB Esquimalt / MARPAC Activity Guide
Officer of the S-class submarine HMS
Spiteful, when talking about the anecdotes
she collected during her research almost
“He was a funny, humble man. Even after
40 years he had almost perfect recall. His
stories matched the patrol reports almost
to the letter,” she says. “That
was unusual, as I had a lot of
trouble sorting out memories
from facts during the writing
phase.”
Without the advantage of the
Internet during the research, she
relied solely on visiting and calling people to get the information
she needed.
“I spent a lot of money on airline tickets and phone bills. It was
a tedious process. I don’t think I
fully understood the enormity of
the task I had undertaken, but I
was determined to complete it.”
When it came time to write the
manuscript, technology had progressed to primitive home computers.
“Without that computer I don’t
think I could have completed the
book,” she says. “Manipulating the
masses of data on a typewriter would
have been a monumental task, so I
am thankful for better technology.”
In 1995, Dundurn Press released the
first edition of her book “Through a
Canadian Periscope” to considerable
acclaim.
“These men went to great lengths
for their country and their stories
needed to be told,” she says. “Hopefully my books will ensure their exploits get passed on, and the efforts
of these men will not be forgotten.”
“Deeply Canadian: New Submarines for a New Millennium,” published by Beacon Publishing, is partsequel to her first book. It tells the
story of the Victoria class submarine
acquisition and why it was necessary
for the navy and Canada to continue
our submarine component.
Both books are available in print
and electronic versions for purchase
at www.amazon.ca and .com or via
Ferguson’s website at www.Canadian
Periscope.ca.

Motorcycle Club
The focus of the Club is three-fold:
To promote the social aspect of group riding we aim to provide avenues for socializing group-ride activities
To assist in self-help repair we provide limited repair shop facilities and equipment
(bike hoist, and fully kitted tool kit)
if you are new to riding to provide rider
mentorship from experienced riders that
will assist new members and help them
hone their skills in preparation for their

even just to enhance everyday skill sets
through road riding activities.

Model Railroad Club
The Model Railroad Club started as an N
Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in
December 1997. Currently the NTRAK
layout is 30 feet by 36 feet. These modules are updated as new techniques and
experiences are gained including Digital
Command Control systems.
The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is
also 30 feet by 36 feet featuring both Digital Command Control and Direct Current
Control systems. Some modules depict a
logging operation, mining operation and
a locomotive servicing facility. Both of
these layouts have been on public display
and have won multiple awards as “Best
Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating
Layout”, and “Best Module” at train shows
in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at
“Christmas in the Village” is the perennial
favourite display at the Saanich Historical
Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.
The club actively participates each year in
the Victoria Train Show, Westshore Town
Centre Hobby Show, Esquimalt Buccaneer
Days, Nanaimo Regional Train Show, and
the MARPAC Expo.
All active or retired military members,
DND and other Government Department
employees are welcome and invited to join
the CFB Esquimalt Model RR Club. The
Club currently meets every Wednesday
evening from 6-9:30pm and Saturday
mornings from 8:30am-noon in the
basement of building 1031 Work Point
Barracks.

The importance of the Family Networks
Rosalee van Stelten
MFRC Volunteer
MFRC staff member Mandi Whitman
was on overnight cell duty at home when
her cell phone rang about 1 a.m. on Feb.
28, 2014. Pacific Command Centre was
on the MFRC 24-hour information line.
There had been an engine room fire at sea
aboard HMCS PROTECTEUR. Her first
question was, “What can we do for you
right now?”
PCC wanted to get word out to the
HMCS PROTECTEUR Family Network as quickly as possible, before the
media, social media and the rumour
mill were at full throttle. After
telephone consultations with
MFRC Executive Director
Gaynor Jackson and further
discussions with the military
member, Mandi called the
Family Network volunteer.
Lynnie Elder was asleep
with her cell phone by her
side when Mandi contacted her. Her boyfriend was
on the sail. She made sure
the PROTECTEUR email
list was up-to-date and,
after working with MFRC
Deployment
Coordinator
Sandra Pinard on the official
communiqué, sent an email out
to the Network about the incident
before the news broke in the media.
Over the following days and weeks,

members.
“I kind of had the same sense of urgency
as other family members,” Lynnie recalls.
“I wanted information. I knew how badly
that they wanted it.”
We often think of a family as parents
with children. So if you are a single parent, a fiancé, part of a working couple with
no kids, or an unattached military mem-

ber on your first deployment you might
say, “What do I need the Military Family
Resource Centre for?”
Suppose there is a crisis at sea or you have
a medical emergency in a foreign port.
Suppose the ship is delayed and there is
no e-mail or telephone communication
between you and a loved one, your parents or grandparents. Who answers their
questions?
The MFRC serves military members and
their community, whatever that community may be. One way they do it is through
the Family Networks.
“We want to be able to reach out to
families when we need to, on behalf of the military,” says Sandra.
“When they do need help, we are
here. And we are here 24/7.”
Register today for a Family Network by filling out
the Family Information
Form at the MFRC website (www.esquimaltmfrc.
com). For further information, call the MFRC at
250-363-2640 or 1-800353-3329.
Rosalee is a former military member, an MFRC
volunteer, and the author of
“WREN: Memories Of Navy
Days, From Royal Yacht To
Quonset Hut”, which is available from the MFRC. All proceeds
go to the Esquimalt Military Family
Resource Centre.

Beef up your passwords and rest easy
Suzann Boulet
Base Administration Branch
Passwords are the first line
of defence against unauthorized access to online accounts,
computers, tablets, or phones.
As such, DND/CAF members are required to maintain
multiple accounts and strong
passwords without reusing
passwords.
A strong password consists
of at least 8 characters that
are a combination of letters,
numbers and symbols (@, #,
$, %, etc.). Passwords are typically case-sensitive; so a strong
password contains letters in
both uppercase and lowercase. Try to refrain from using
words found in the dictionary
or parts of your name or login
name.
Weak or non-complex passwords allow an attacker to
compromise a user account

1. Capitalize the first (and/
or last) letters of the account/
service being logged into, and
add one or more characters
between the first body of letters and an easy-to-remember
4 digit number, such as:
(a) [ServicenamE] [your
characters] [your numbers]
e.g. FacebooK*#3865
(b) [ServiceNameBackwards] [your numbers] [your
characters]
e.g. KooBecaF3865*#
(c) [your numbers] [ServicenamE] [your characters]
e.g. 3865FacebooK*#
2. Another option could be
to remember a phrase “I Have
Way Too Many Passwords To
Remember” by adding the first
letter of each word as the password:
(a) “i have way too many
passwords to remember”: e.g.
ihwtmptr
(b) Add the first capital letter from the account/service
(facebook) = “F”, and add it to
the password: e.g. Fihwtmptr
(c) The final step would
be to add special characters,
and numbers: e.g. Fihwtmptr*#3865
I hope this helps some of you
create the perfect, easy to remember, secure passwords!
