some nice little bits of habitat.
Lawton Heath is just a little further westwards.

Not sure if it's quite within the area classed as Lowton Heath - I
had a look at the Mount Tabor Site today (along a footpath north
of Newton Road, just east of Stone Cross Llne South) . 80+
Goldfinch were present, Including many juveniles, feeding on the
mass of Thistles on this uncultivated area, with several unnet and
Greenfinch also present. Other birds seen were juv Blackcap, with
Kestrel and Sparrowhawk over.

The footpath on it follows a little babbling brook for~
way by the side of a small wooded area with mature and semi
mature trees. There's also a small swampy area with butt rushes
and the like at the southern end that looks like it could hold the
odd good bird now and again.
I walked through It today at 2.00pm, not the best time of day I
know but there was stili tots of warbler activity with Blackcaps
and Chiffchaff and I also had a very close encounter with a
Buzzard and also good views of a GSW.
I'll deflnately be visiting here again. (But not In shorts next time
as there's loads of nettles)

Chairman was best placed to peak on behalf of both sets of residents. Advice was then
given that representations cou1d still be lodged; those who could were also encotrraged to
attend the Planning Committee to give moral support.
[The application was subsequently pennitted; however, Tom Rigby has since indicated that
he will not be proceeding. The full circumstances will be discussed at the next monthly
meeting.]

r : ath en ohnson spoke to the meeting about ber success at obtaining 105
tree saplings from the Woodland Trust and a licence has been granted so that a Jubilee
Wood can be planted on a third of the site. This third is the land owned by the Council. It
is hoped that this facility can be enjoyed by people using the public footpath which is
adjacent to the land. The trees are native English trees and it is hoped they will encourage
wildlife. The GM Archaeological Unit has also been contacted to ensure there was no
conflict with the foundations of the former workhouse [since confirmed]. It is proposed
that at the next meeting in October a working party could be put together in order to plant
the trees in November. The Group extended their incere thanks to Kathy for all her efforts
in achieving such a successful outcome.
Diggle Green: Members were compiling lists of numbers of tractors and trailers leaving the
site on a daily basis and recording infonnation about smells to report to Wigan Council's
Paul Bentley (01942 849633). Ann Lowe reported that there was some hope of getting
loads sheeted. AJan Lloyd was also trying to make direct contact with Richard Evans,
Warrington's responsible Principal Planning Officer (01925442806). [The Chairman has
since managed to speak to Richard. Tt is clear that a number of complaints have reached
him, which he hopes to be investigating shortly. departmental turmoil pennitting.]
AJan Woodcock, a Croft resident, suggested the root of the problem was an ambiguous
restriction on the number of vehicles per day, which he put at 30. The Chainnan pointed
out that he had taken care to summarise the relevant condition and that they were on
re{;ord for all to see [LHSRG Minutes for May, which confmn that the HGV restriction is
actually 20 vehicles in and 20 vehicles out].
