The name Kuah is a Malay word meaning ‘gravy’, referring to an ancient folklore of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry at the spot where the town now stands. Once a rustic town with a few streets, present-day Kuah is a thriving centre of hotels and shoppingcum-business complexes, fortunately w ithout the din of modern-day cities. Kuah offers a wide variety of duty-free goods such as tobacco, liquor, cosmetics and electrical items at highlyattractive prices. EAGLE SQUARE or Dataran Lang is Langkawi’s most prominent landmark for visitors arriving via the sea. Situated near the Kuah Jetty, the main attraction of the square is the magnificent s tatue of the reddish brown eagle majestically poised for flight. According to local folklore, Langkawi derived its name from the eagle or helang. In old Malay, kawi denotes reddish brown, hence Langkawi means ‘reddish brown eagle’. The square is beautifully landscaped and features scenic ponds, bridges, covered terraces, restaurants and barrel vaults made of bricks. The square is b eautifully illuminated at night and presents a dramatic scene as you approach the island from the sea. 77 Crocodile Adventureland Langkawi Cenang Map To Seven Wells Waterfall Oriental Village Cable Car Padang Matsirat JALA Kok Beach I J A L A N PA N T A NK UA LA TE RIA N G The Danna Langkawi KOH Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort Burau Island Telaga Harbour Park Beras Terbakar NG JALAN MA TSI RA T J A L A N U LU M E L A K One Hotel Helang NG AT A N B AT UB E BA E TU B A NG K U P RT A JAL J A L A N K UAL A M U D A Rebak Island Resort Langkawi C H AN D E K U R J A L A N K E D AWA N G STRAITS OF MALACCA AN JAL JAL AN MA TA A LA H Kedawang Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa JA NB O HO Laman Padi RT E M P O YA K AL AN PA Casa Del Mar Langkawi J LA NT NT PA 8 * Map not drawn to scale Major Road Places of Interest Tourist Information Centre Epoi Island M JA LA N Fave Hotel Holiday Villa Langkawi Beach Resort & Spa ENG AH TA I T Airport Jetty Hotel B U K IT N JA LAN P A Tengah Beach LEGEND L AN UT Underwater World Langkawi JA I AL G A AN Cenang Beach TE EN NG CH AH AI Rebak Besar Island Resorts World Langkawi IR Kota Mahsuri JALA N SIMPA DA A MU J A L AN PA D AN G M AT S I R Langkawi International Airport U LU M E L AK A A KE NY UM AL N KU Four Points by Sheraton PAD A AN JAL JALA Langkawi Lagoon Resort Lalang Island TAMAN LEGENDA OR LEGENDS PARK is a s cenic park with beautiful g ardens of vivid local blooms, plants and fruit trees. There are three geoforest parks in Langkawi - the Mat Chincang Cambrian is reputed to be the oldest geological formation in the country. At the Kilim Karst, one can view magnificently-formed landscapes from nearly vertical to subrounded karstic hills as well as pinnacles ofvarious shapes and sizes. The Dayang Bunting Geoforest Park boasts fine marbles. LAKE OF THE PREGNANT MAIDEN or Tasik Dayang Bunting, with its uniquely-coined name, is sure to enthrall you with its beautiful surroundings and mysterious past. The name of Langkawi’s largest freshwater lake is attributed to the legend of a lovely fairy princess who married an earthly prince. Her first child died shortly after birth. She was so sad and depressed that she buried the child in the crystal clear waters of the lake. Before she returned to her celestial abode, she blessed the waters so that any childless maiden who bathed in the lake would c onceive t hereafter. To reach the lake one has to get to the Island of the Pregnant Maiden first and then take a short walk through the forest reserve. 13 13 SUNGAI KILIM offers some truly unforgettable sights and experiences for adventurous travellers to Langkawi. A tour that is bound to provide plenty of thrills is the boat cruise to Kilim Nature Park, an escapade to another world. Spread over an area of 100 square kilometres, Kilim Nature Park features a beautiful mix of well-protected green mangrove forests, isolated white beaches and blue lagoons. On the trail, along the calm winding river, you will be exposed to the w onders of the park’s marine ecosystem and flora and fauna like the overhanging Bogak Trees, Brown Eagles, Tree Crabs, iguanas and macaques. Enjoy the scenic and spectacular view of unique limestone rock formations emerging from the floor of the mangrove swamps and the sea. These fascinating geological wonders have been dubbed the Temple of Borobodur, the Elephant Stone and the Hanging Gardens. THE HOLE IN THE WALL FISH FARM is a 10-minute boat ride from the Kilim river jetty. Try your hand at feeding the tame stingrays at the fish farm. Located in the Kilim mangrove area, which covers about 1,309 hectares, the stingrays are fed half a kg of fish daily. 14 DURIAN PERANGIN WATERFALLS is suitable for picnics, a relaxing dip and recreation. A refreshing respite from the hot and humid weather, this waterfall is clearly visible from the road. SEVEN WELLS or Telaga Tujuh, located in the northwestern corner of Langkawi, is a geological arvel. The waterfall is so named because the m cascading waters are broken by a series of seven natural pools. The lush green forest that surrounds the waterfall adds a mystical touch to the natural splendour. Legend has it that fairies used to come down to the waterfall to bathe and frolic.
