The predicted rainy weather from Tropical Storm Daniel passed Molokai without
affecting Saturday’s Ko Molokai Keiki o ke Kai Surf Meet finals. Just right keiki-sized
surf and plenty of volunteer help fromparents, aunties & uncles and cousins made for
another successful series and summer’s end.
Winners in the 6 & under age group included (1st place) J.T. Samaniago; 2nd Lei
Apiki; 3rd Kelsey-Lee Bicoy followed by Kekua Pale; Josie Mawae; Anela
Montemayer; Sunny Chow and Florencia Sibaico.
7 & 8 year old winners were 1st place Luke Kikukawa; 2nd Kapua Lee; 3rd Kaua
Holmes and Kapahu chow; Kalea Tacayo; Kainalu Wilhelm; Jake Mahiai, Kale
Montemayer, Josiah Kia.
9 & 10 year old surfers were: 1st place Tristan Yver who won a surfboard for a perfect 3,000 pts earned in three meets. 2nd place Colin Nelson-Angelsea; 3rd Hikilii
Chow. Also placing were Zack Taizer; Lucy Wilhelm, Cody Kawano, Jacob Wren;
Conan Kawano and Amber Kaholoaa.
11 & 12 year olds winners, (below) self-conscious about having photo taken : were
1st place Tomba Heen; 2nd Pualei Lima, 3rd Kevin Bicoy and 4th Kamalani Bicoy (not
present), but for some, this was the last keiki meetsince they age out.

It was the end of the Republic of Hawaii when Hawaii was annexed by a joint resolution of Congress on July 7, 1898.
“On August 12, 1898, the Hawaiian flag was lowered for the last time from the central tower of Iolani Palace. The United States on that day took over the Hawaiian
Islands. The picture shows the Hawaiian flag asit fluttered to the steps,” according to a
1926 publication, Under Hawaiian Skies, by Albert P. Taylor. When the new organig
laws took effect in 1900, Hawaii became the Territory of Hawaii until August 21, 1959,
Statehood Admission Day, the 50-star American Flag was hoisted over Iolani Palace.
DOW Wants To Spray Fluoride On Food
DOW Chemical has been lobbying the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to
allow it to spray a new fluoride-based pesticide (sulfuryl fluoride) on hundreds of foods
prepared in the US.
If DOW gets its way, sulfuryl fluoride will become a major new source of fluoride,
making it even more difficult for consumers to avoid fluoride in their daily lives.
What's worse, the levels of fluoride allowed to be sprayed on food will be shockingly high: 70 ppm for processed foods, 130 ppm for wheat products, and 900 ppm for
dried eggs!

Dear EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson:
I am deeply concerned about a new fluoride-based pesticide (sulfuryl fluoride) that
EPA is allowing to be sprayed on all processed foods and a broad assortment of raw
food. While EPA’s decision may benefit the bottom line of Dow AgroSciences, it does
not protect the public health, or the public interest.
The public expects EPA to employ the best science available in its approval of pesticides. However, it is apparent that this did not happen with sulfuryl fl uoride. Indeed,
the National Academy of Sciences recently concluded that the safety standard used by
EPA to approve sulfuryl fluoride is, in fact, not safe at all.
Moreover, as the NAS report makes clear, and as is evident by the growing number
of children with dental fluorosis, many Americans are being OVER-exposed to fluoride.
There is no safety margin for additional fluoride exposures that will result from sulfuryl
fluoride. I am particularly concerned for susceptible subsets of consumers, including
children, people with kidney disease, people with excess thirst (e.g. diabetics, athletes,
and laborers) and people with nutrient deficiencies.
Finally, as Director of EPA, I would like you to investigate why EPA increased the
allowable dosage for infan ts and children not once, but twice, during its approval
process for sulfuryl fluoride. In direct violation of the Food Quality Protection Act, these
manipulations have left our children ten times less protected than adults.
For these, and the many other reasons detailed in the petition to EPA, I urge you to
revoke all food-based uses of sulfuryl fluoride.

Man Unlawfully Arrested by Police
July 25, 2006
PHILADELPHIA -- Neftaly Cruz said police had no right to come onto their property and
arrest the 21-year-old simply because he was using his cell phone's camera."I was humiliated and
terrorized. I was embarrassed, you know," Cruz said.
Cruz told the NBC 10 Investigators that police said they arrested him last Wednesday for
taking a picture of police activity next door with his cell phone where police were arresting a suspected drug dealer.
Cruz said that when he heard a commotion, he walked out of his back door with his cell
phone to see what was happening. He said that when he saw the street lined with police cars, he
decided to take a picture of the scene. "I opened (the phone) and took a shot," Cruz said.
Moments later, Cruz said he got the shock of his life when an officer came to his back yard
gate. "He opened the gate and took me by my right arm and threw him onto a police car, cuffed
him and took him to jail.
A neighbor said she witnessed the incident and could not believe what she saw.
"He opened up the gate and Neffy was coming down and he went up to Neffy, pulled him
down, had Neffy on the car and was telling him, 'You should have just went in the house and
minded your own business instead of trying to take pictures off your picture phone,'" said Gerrell
Martin.
Cruz said police told him that he broke a new law that prohibits people from taking pictures
of police with cell phones.
"They threatened to charge me with conspiracy, impeding an investigation, obstruction of an
investigation. ∑ They said, 'You were impeding this investigation.' (I asked,) "By doing what?'
(The officer said,) 'By taking a picture of the police officers with a camera phone,'" Cruz said.
Cruz's parents, who got him out of jail, said police told them the same thing.
"He said he was taking pictures with his cell phone and that was obstructing an investigation," said Aracelis Cruz, Neftaly Cruz's mother.
ACLU said that "There is no law that prevents people from taking pictures of what anybody
can see on the street," said Larry Frankel of the American Civil Liberties Union. "I think it's rather
scary that in this country you could actually be taken down to police headquarters for taking a
picture on your cell phone of activities that are clearly visible on the street."
Frankel said Cruz's civil rights might have been violated. "He was unlawfully
seized, which is a violation of the 4th amendment," Frankel said.
Police told Hairston that they did take Cruz into to custody, but they said Cruz was
not on his property when they arrested him. Police also denied that they told Cruze he
was breaking the law with his cell phone.
Cruz's family said they have filed a formal complaint with the police department's
Internal Affairs division and are requesting a complete investigation.

75 Cops Failed Drug Tests in Boston
Cocaine use most prevalent, raising concern

Since Boston police started annual drug testing, 75 officers have failed the tests,
and 26 of them flunked a second test and were fired. There are 2,000 officers in the BPF.
Acting Police Commissioner Albert Goslin said an additional 20 of the officers who tested
positive left the department on their own, he said because they could not handle the frequent follow-up checks. If they test positive for any drug, officers receive a 45-day unpaid suspension
and must get treatment. Once they return to duty, they are subject to random testing for three
years, in addition to regular testing.
Of the 75 officers, 61 tested positive for cocaine, 14 for marijuana, two for ecstasy, and one
for heroin, according to the figures, obtained by the Globe through a public records request.
(Some officers had more than one drug in their system).
Some specialists and department observers said they were alarmed by the number of officers
testing positive for a ``hard" drug such as cocaine and questioned the department's policy that
allows an officer to remain on the force after a positive drug test. An officer is not fired until a
second positive test.
``It seems like it's a chronic problem," said Darnell A. Williams, president and CEO of the
Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts. ``Here we're trying to deal with the guns and the drugs
on the street level, but we have a more strident problem inside the department when we have that
many people testing positive for drugs, especially cocaine."
The department's drug testing policy is already under scrutiny, after reports that the alleged
ringleader in a corruption case tested positive for cocaine in 1999, yet kept his job under the rules
that call only for suspensions and treatment even for positive tests for drugs such as cocaine and
heroin. Unlike Boston, the New York and Los Angeles police departments dismiss officers after
a first positive drug test.
The annual testing began in 1999 after years of negotiating with the city's powerful police
unions, which had objected to the tests. In exchange for salary and benefit increases, the unions
agreed to a system that gives officers warning by scheduling tests within 30 days of their birthday. The city's hair-testing method has also been disputed.
``Anybody who fails a drug test when they know a year advance within 30 days of when it's
going to be . . . is a person who I consider to be an addict," he said.

World Ironman Champion Zane Holmes
Places 2nd, California's Gary Fortune 3rd
If Australia's Jamie Mitchell had anything left to prove to the international paddling world, he proved it today by winning his fifth consecutive Quiksilveredition Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race, overcoming
grueling open-ocean conditions that spanned the 32 miles of the infamous Molokai Channel. While tough conditions left all records
untouched today, the fact that 29-year-old Mitchell succeeded in warding
off 129 other paddlers with adverse winds, waves and tides showed he is
without question the master of this sport. Mitchell's winning time was 5
hours, 19 minutes and 26 second - 23 minutes.
Starting out at 7:30 a.m. from Kaluakoi, Molokai, Mitchell and
Holmes set a cracking pace and remained neck and neck for the first 10
miles of the course. Minimal wind and waves made for a level playing
field at the start with little opportunity for anyone to gain an edge. But as
the wind kicked in to chop up a five-foot swell mid-channel, and as an
outgoing tide ripped through the course, Mitchell's technical prowess saw
him inch his way well clear of the record field of 128 paddlers.
Runner-up was highly touted World Ironman Champion Zane
Holmes, 25, also from Queensland, Australia - 5:36:38. It was his first
time paddling this course. Third place went to California's Gary Fortune,
39, (Malibu) - 6:00:28, who was not tipped to be among the top finishers.
La Jolla's Eric Meech was the Mainland favorite, but a run-in with a large
fish 10 minutes into the race saw him break the rudder-system on his
open class board. The only back-up equipment he could find was a smaller, 12-foot "stockboard". Despite the mishap, he finished second in the
stockboard division (6:28:26), even after incurring a one-minute penalty
for his change in equipment. The top stockboarder was Keoni Watson
(Honolulu, 6:28:03). The first Hawaii paddler over the line was 53-yearold Matt Barnett (Haleiwa), paddling an open-class board in a time of
6:26:44, for 13th place overall.
Only one woman made the solo crossing, defending champion
Kanesa Duncan, 30, (Honolulu), in a time of 6:33:54. Duncan crossed in
21st place overall. Duncan is the defending women's champion and also
the women's course record holder. This was her fifth crossing.

Daniel Ellsberg is a former American military analyst employed by the RAND
Corporation who precipitated a national firestorm in 1971 when he released the
Pentagon Papers, the US military's account of activities during the Vietnam War, to The
New York Times. The release awakened the American people to a systematic program
of organized deception carried out by the Pentagon against the population to continue
the Vietnam War.
Daniel Ellsberg, speaking on air to GCN radio host Jack Blood, stated his concerns
that criminal elem ents of the US government were psychologically capable to have
carried out 9/11.
Ellsberg went on to state that another major 9-11-like state-sponsored attack would be followed by a martial law scenario which might include detention camps for American dissenters.
Ellsberg said that he worked with individuals at the highest levels of government
who staged war provocations several times to whip up pro-war sentiment in the US.
Daniel Ellsberg now joins the ranks of hundreds of prominent engineers, physicists,
economists, military officers, pilots, high-level intelligence analysts, and cabinet ministers who are exposing the 9/11 hoax.
Each day more and more respected professionals are going public with their questions about the official 9/11 fable. The 9/11 cover-up dam is breaking under the weight
of these truthseekers' efforts and the perpetrators of 9/11 are watching them in horror
while wondering who will be the next to speak up.
Here is a partial transcript of the interview:
Jack Blood: Have you had a chance
to take a look at a lot of this information coming from America's leading scholars,
physicists, engineers, etc. Who have taken a look now at 9/11 and are now, not only
questioning what might have happened on 9/11, but really being very direct including
a number of high level ?
Daniel Ellsberg: Actually, I have looked at a lot of that,
and I'll tell you without going into it all which would take a lot of time, I find some of
it very implausible and other parts of it quite solid, and there's no question in my mind
that there's enough evidence there to justify a very comprehensive and hard hitting
investigation of a kind that we've not seen, with subpoenas, general questioning of people, and raising the release of a lot of documents, there's no question that put it this way,
very serious questions have been raised, about how much they knew beforehand and
how much involvement there may been. Is the, is a administration capable, humanly
and physiologically of engineering such a provocation?
Yes, I would say that, I
worked for such an administration myself, Johnson, ah, President Johnson put destro
yers in harm's way in the Tonkin Gulf not only once, but several times, with the, with
a lot of his people hoping that it would lead to a confrontation and claiming that it had.
And could have resulted in the loss of many lives in the course of it.
And what I'm
saying now, by the way though is this, and here there's a very strong analogy, to this
day there is a controversy gone back and forth historically, as to who caused the
Reichstag fire, the burning of their parliament in Nazi Germany, the Reichstag, on
February 27 th 1933. Goering, at one point, the number two man in the Nazi regime,
said "I set that fire", later he denied that at Nuremberg, and I've noticed that the latest
history suggests, that it wasn't the Nazi's. The point is that all this time later is there is
still a controversy about that. But, what there's no controversy about is the use the
Nazi's made of it, that very night and the next day.
J.B. Cui Bono, who benefits?
D.E. February 28 th, there was a Reichstag fire decree that ended freedom of
speech, freedom of the press, freedom of association, all in the Weimar Constitution,
and privacy of the postal system and of communications and of telephone, what ended
here in USA too, more than we knew four years ago right after 9/11. If there's another
9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt
that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree
that will involve massive detentions in this country, detention camps for middle-easterners and their quote "sympathizers", critics of the President's policy and essentially
the wiping-out of the Bill of Rights.
J.B. I know your walking very carefully here Daniel Ellsberg, but that's pretty
strong medicine and we have to look at the history of the world, governments do this,
as you mentioned, governments are liars, governments are murderers, they, this is not
above them, I'm sure your familiar with the Northwoods Document.
D.E. Ah yes, indeed. Yeah talking about a manufactured provocation which could
have involved even the shooting down of an American or some other airliner, with
American support. Yes I would say by the way, that Americans definitely play this
game, I'm sure that it's happening now.
We, I expected by the way, Bush to manufacture a kind of Tonkin Gulf incident before he went into Iraq and then I decided well
I'd been wrong they didn't feel they needed that. It is interesting that the memos that
came out, in conversations between Blair and Bush, (aka The White House Memo),
show that Bush was pressing for the possibility of sending over a U-2 and getting it
fired on and using that as an excuse.
J.B. A U-2 painted like a U.N., ah, a United Nations airplane.
D.E. Yes. But, what is happening right now is that Israel is clearly seeking a generally provocative act by both Hammas and Hezbollah, which I think were not wise acts
some people are applauding those in the Middle-East passing out sweets and so forth,
very short-sighted I would say, a lot of innocent people are going to die as a result.
Then martial law in U.S.A. if this all comes to pass. Looks grim.

Air Marshalls Blow Whistle on QUOTA
Innocent People Placed On 'Watch List' To Meet Quota
July 21, 2006 DENVER -- You could be on a secret government database or
watch list for simply taking a picture on an airplane. Some federal air marshals say
they're reporting your actions to meet a quota, even though some top officials deny it.
The air marshals, whose identities are being concealed, told 7NEWS that they're
required to submit at least one report a month. If they don't, there's no raise, no bonus,
no awards and no special assignments. "Innocent passengers are being entered into an
international intelligence database as suspicious persons, acting in a suspicious manner
on an aircraft ... and they did nothing wrong," said one federal air marshal.
These unknowing passengers who are doing nothing wrong are landing in a secret
government document called a Surveillance Detection Report, or SDR. Air marshals
told 7NEWS that managers in Las Vegas created and continue to maintain this potentially dangerous quota system.
"Do these reports have real life impacts on the people who are identified as potential terrorists?" 7NEWS Investigator Tony Kovaleski asked. "Absolutely," a federal air
marshal replied.
7NEWS obtained an internal Homeland Security document defining an SDR as a
report designed to identify terrorist surveillance activity.
"When you see a decision
like this, for these reports, who loses here?" Kovaleski asked.
"The people we're supposed to protect -- the American public," an air marshal said.
What kind of impact would it have for a flying individual to be named in an SDR?
"That could have serious impact ... They could be placed on a watch list. They could
wind up on databases that identify them as potential terrorists or a threat to an aircraft.
It could be very serious," said Don Strange, a former agent in charge of air marshals in
Atlanta. He lost his job attempting to change policies inside the agency.
That's why several air marshals object to a July 2004 memo from top management
in the Las Vegas office, a memo that reminded air marshals of the SDR requirement.
The body of the memo said, "Each federal air marshal is now expected to generate at
least one SDR per month."
"Does that memo read to you that Federal Air Marshal
headquarters has set a quota on these reports?" Kovaleski asked.
"Absolutely, no doubt," an air marshal replied. A second management memo, also
dated July 2004, said, "There may come an occasion when you just don't see anything
out of the ordinary for a month at a time, but I'm sure that if you are looking for it, you'll
see something."
Another federal air marshal said that not only is there a quota in Las Vegas for
SDRs, but that "it directly reflects on (their) performance evaluations" and on how much
money they make.
The director of the Air Marshal Service, Dana Brown, declined 7NEWS' request for
an interview on the quota system. But the agency points to a memo from August 2004
that said there is not a quota for submitting SDRs and which goes on to say, "I do not
expect reports that are inaccurate or frivolous."
But, Las Vegas-based air marshals say the quota system remains in force, now more
than two years after managers sent the original memos, and that it's a mandate from
management that impacts annual raises, bonuses, awards and special assignments.
"To meet this quota, to get their raises, do you think federal air marshals in Las Vegas
are making some of this stuff up?" Kovaleski asked. "I know they are. It's a joke," an
air marshal replied. "Have marshals in the Las Vegas office, I don't want to say fabricated, but 'created' reports?" Kovaleski asked. "Creative writing -- stretching a long
ways the truth, yes," an air marshal replied.
One example, according to air marshals, occurred on one flight leaving Las Vegas,
when an unknowing passenger, most likely a tourist, was identified in an SDR for doing
nothing more than taking a photo of the Las Vegas skyline as his plane rolled down the
runway. "You're saying that was not an accurate portrayal of a potential terrorist activity?" Kovaleski asked. "No, it was not," an air marshal said. "It was a marshal trying to meet a quota ..." Kovaleski said. "Yes, he was," the air marshal replied.
Strange said he didn't have a quota in the Atlanta office when he was in charge. "I
would never have done that ... You are going to have people reporting every suspicious
looking activity they come across, whether they in their heart feel like it's a threat, just
to meet the quota," Strange said.
Strange and other air marshals said the quota allows the government to fill a database with bad information. A Las Vegas air marshal said he didn't write an SDR every
month for exactly that reason. "Well, it's intelligence information, and like any system, if you put garbage in, you get garbage out," the air marshal said. "I would like
to see an investigation -- a real investigation conducted into the ways things are done
here," the air marshal in Las Vegas said.
Although the agency strongly denies any presence of a quota system, Las Vegasbased air marshals have produced documents that show their performance review is
directly linked to producing SDRs.
Bush Submits New Terror Detainee Bill

WU.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred
from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration,
say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill.
A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon's tribunal system to
detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror. Administration officials,
who declined to comment on the draft, said the proposal was still under discussion and
no final decisions had been made.
According to the draft, the military would be allowed to detain anyone "engaged in
hostilities against the United States who has committed an act that violates the law of
war and this statute."
Legal experts said Friday that such language is dangerously broad and could authorize the military to detain indefinitely U.S. citizens who oppose government policy.
"That's the big question ... the definition of who can be detained," said Martin
Lederman, a law professor at Georgetown University. Scott L. Silliman, a retired Air
Force Judge Advocate, said the broad definition of enemy combatants is alarming
because a U.S. citizen loosely suspected of terror ties would lose access to a civilian
court - and all the rights that come with it, including barring hearsay evidence, guaranteeing "speedy trials" and granting a defendant access to evidence. The proposal also
would allow defendants to be barred from their own trial and likely allow the submission of coerced [torture] testimony. —MAKAALA !!!

Shooter angry 'about Israel,' attacks Jewish Federation
A 31-year-old Pakistani man, announcing he was a Muslim and angry about Israel,
pulled out a gun in the Seattle Jewish Federation today and shot six people, one dead.
The gunman, who has not been named, reportedly lives in Pasco, Washington and has a
criminal background. He reportedly is a U.S. citizen.
According to several witnesses, the man got through security and announced to
staff members: "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel." He immediately began
shooting.
FBI spokesman David Gomez said officials believe the suspect acted alone and is
not affiliated with a foreign organization.
A hospital spokesman said five women were brought in, and three of them are in
critical condition. Three are in their 20s, one is 19 and the other is 43. The 43-year-old
was shot in the abdomen. One of the victims is in her 17th week of pregnancy.
A joint terrorism task force joined SWAT teams and a bomb disposal unit at the
scene. "Throughout the city, we have directed all our patrol officers to monitor closely
all synagogues and other Jewish organizations, and we have also advised neighboring
agencies in the Puget Sound area to do the same," said Nick Metz, Seattle Police
Department.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle says on its Web site that its mission is to
"ensure Jewish survival and enhance the quality of Jewish life locally, in Israel and
worldwide."
The FBI has labeled the shootings a "hate crime" based on what the gunman told
police in a 911 call, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.
The situation in Iraq is out of control with many thousand upon thousands of deaths
more than Sadam ever perpetrated or would have caused by the U S meddling into
things they should have left alone.
Hezbollah didn't exist before Israel invaded and occupied Lebanon beginning in
1982. Its a continuing war, not a terrorist attack on Israel.
We should judge the Israeli government's and Hezbollah's respective crimes killing
civilians in light of the context: Israeli's 40-year occupation of Lebanon's Shebaa Farms,
Syria's Golan Heights, the Palestinians' Gaza Strip and West Bank. By any reasonable
definition, the so-called provocation by Hezbollah -- the seizing of two Israeli soldiers
-- was part of a continuing military conflict, not an act of terrorism.
Thus stopping the threat to innocents is imperative. But President Bush is opposing a ceasefire. Furthermore, he is shipping precision bombs to Israel. The Lebanese will
know where those bombs were made. This guarantees anti-American violence in the

The more governments that join in, the greater the threat to innocents is likely to be.
The root of the conflict is the Israeli occupation of Arab land. Hezbollah didn't exist
before Israel invaded and occupied Lebanon beginning in 1982. And Israel invaded
Lebanon to root out Palestinian refugees, who had moved there via Jordan after they
were forced by the Jews to leave their homes, first, when Israel was being established
by the European powers, culminating in formal nationhood in 1948, and again during its
1967 preventive war against its Arab neighbors.
Aug. 16 PUT THE WAR ON TRIAL: "Is

On August 17, U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada will face a pre-trial hearing for refusing to deploy to Iraq. It is my conclusion as an officer of the armed forces
that the war in Iraq is not only morally wrong but a horrible breach of American law.

to publicly take such a stand.

Prior to the U.S. attack on Iraq, over a thousand U.S. law organizations and professors explained that an invasion, without a new U.N. Security Council Resolution, would
constitute a crime against the peace and a war of aggression. Since then, U.N. SecretaryGeneral Kofi Annan has unequivocally confirmed that the U.S. war was illegal. And
documents such as the Downing Street Memos make clear that the war and occupation
was planned and initiated as an illegal war of aggression.
The Army has formally charged Lt. Watada two counts of making contemptuous
words towards President Bush. In short, Lt. Watada has expressed his opinion that our
government led us into war based on misrepresentations and lies. Could it be that

Guns Maybe Prohibited on Foreign Owned
Highways and Toll Roads in USA ?
As disturbing as this is, you may be asking yourself what it has to do
with gun owners. The answer is, maybe more than you think. For example, if foreign companies "own" American roads, can they forbid you

With the recent revelations that the Bush Administration is pushing
for a "North American Union" -- essentially removing borders between
the US, Mexico, and Canada

Roads and bridges built by U.S. taxpayers are starting to be sold off, and so far foreign-owned companies are doing the buying.
On a single day in June, an Australian-Spanish partnership paid $3.8 billion to
lease the Indiana Toll Road. An Australian company bought a 99-year lease on
Virginia's Pocahontas Parkway, and Texas officials decided to let a Spanish-American
partnership build and run a toll road from Austin to Seguin for 50 years.
Few people know that the tolls from the U.S. side of the tunnel between Detroit and Windsor,
Canada, go to a subsidiary of an Australian company which also owns a bridge in
Alabama.
Some experts welcome the trend. Robert Poole, transportation director for the conservative think tank Reason Foundation, said private investors can raise more money
than politicians to build new roads because these kind of owners are willing to raise
tolls.
"They depoliticize the tolling de cision," Poole said. Besides, he said, foreign companies have purchased infrastructure in Europe for years.
The Bush administration's plan to let a foreign company manage U.S. ports met a
storm of protest. John Foote, senior fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of
Government, said the government can take over a highway in an emergency. But he
objects to selling roads to raise cash. But that is just what Chicago has done, and it is
a trend spreading across the nation, up to Alakasnan Islands being sold to Russa, and
maybe even to Hawaii where highway funding is always in short supply.
Washington is not likely to produce more money to build roads. The federal highway fund which will have a balance of about $16 billion by the end of 2006 will run
out in 2009 or 2010, according to White House and congressional estimates.
About half the states now let companies build and operate roads. Many changed their
laws recently to do so.
Last year, the Chicago sold a 99-year lease on the eight-mile Chicago Skyway for
$1.83 billion. The buyer was the same consortium that leased the Indiana Toll Road
Macquarie Infrastructure Group of Sydney, Australia, and Cintra Concesiones de
Infraestructuras de Transporte of Madrid, Spain.
Chicago used the money to pay off debt and fund road projects. Skyway tolls rose
50 cents, to $2.50; By 2017, they will reach $5.
The Indiana Toll Road lease proceeds will pay for urgent projects such as road and bridge improvements. That need is
precisely why cities and states have begun to look to foreign investors.
Illinois lawmakers are examining privatizing the Illinois Tollway, New Jersey lawmakers are considering selling 49 percent of the state's two big toll roads and a gubernatorial candidate in Ohio wants to sell the turnpike.
Patrick Bauer, the Indiana House's Democratic leader, says such deals are taxpayer rip-offs.
Bauer believes Macquarie-Cintra could make $133 billion over the 75year life of the Indiana Toll Road lease for which Indiana got $3.8 billion.
"In five, maybe 10 years, all that money is gone, and the tolls keep rising and the
money keeps flowing into the foreign coffers," Bauer said.
Orange County, Calif., got burned by a toll-road lease for a different reason.
The road, part of state Route 91, was built and run for $130 million by California
Private Transportation Company, partly owned by France-based Compagnie
Financiere et Industrielle des Autoroutes. The toll road opened in 1995.
Seven years later, Orange County was looking at gridlock. But it could not build more
roads because of a provision in the lease. So it bought back the lease for $207.5 million.
To encourage more domestic investment in highways, former Transportation
Secretary Norman Y. Mineta made a pitch to Wall Street: "The time is now for United
States investors including our financial, construction and engineering institutions
to get involved in transportation investments," said Mineta, who left office July 7.
U.S. companies are getting the message, hopefully.

This photo of a firefighter at Ground Zero standing in front of a massive centralcore column that has clearly been cut at an angle on 9-11-01, is more evidence supporting the theory that Thermate charges were used in the controlled demolition of
WTC buildings on 9-11-01. This is photographic evidence that could constitute very
strong proof that the cut was caused by pre-positioned explosives.
A professional controlled-demolition crew at work setting up a steel-framed highrise building for a “pull” gave further support when they demonstrated that they put the
explosives in a carefully calculated angle of the shaped-charge positioned on the column for a specific purpose: when the explosion causes the beam to sever at that angle,
gravity loads assist separation by forcing the upper section ˜ now cleanly severed ˜ to
laterally “walk” away from the stationary lower portion down the angled cut thereby
initiating collapse of the building mass above it.
A straight cut, on the other hand, would simply cause the upper section to drop
straight down about one inch onto the lower thereby arresting any further movement.
I think it should be clear to anyone who carefully compares these two scenarios
that the beams at the WTC were set up at this angle for the purpose of controlled demolition. Unfortunately, this crime scene was quickly removed on orders from the White
House before an investigation could be done to determine all the facts about what
caused the WTC towers to fall down as in a controlled demolition, rather than being
due to airplanes crashing into them.
Of course the guilty would love to say that we will never get to the bottom of the
issue. By now, the theoretical case has in effect been settled. Silverstein admitted blowing up WTC-7, and there is no evidence of a 757 at the Pentagon.
We can’t seem to get credible answers from the powers that be, so it appears the
real attitude of the perpetrators could best be paraphrased as follows: "You have no
power. As far as we are concerned, we can keep debating for ever. We can even have
annual conspiracy conventions on 9/11, with a host of speakers. To use a Russian
expression, the dogs may bark as the train roars along. You are the dogs, and we are
the train. Keep whining. We will keep on declaring ourselves unconvinced. We still
own the TV stations that refuse to show evidence, we still own the banks and the military, and you can chatter on the internet all you want as you fade into ineffectual obscurity." That is the essence of their real position as I see it.
I think we need to tell Bush et al that they have wrecked the economy. You are
facing military exhaustion, as your megalomaniacal schemes for world domination are
collapsing because of overpriced weaponry and a disappearing base of military manpower. We can and will wait until economic collapse and military exhaustion set in. At
that time, you will have no power. The arrests, interrogations, and trials will take place.
There will be no further debate. The issue will be settled by evidence in criminal judicial proceedings, as they were when your colleagues in Nazi Germany and Imperial
Japan ran out of power to bully dissent.
This a matter of power. As long as the perps cling onto the power they value (TV
and the military) they feel they can safely pretend to be unconvinced by even the most
overwhelming evidence and logic that 9-11 was a criminal conspiracy perpetrated by
domestic enemies of our Constitution and the American People. Only when their power
collapses will the weight of the arguments be acknowledged.
Remember, even Galileo was forced to recant his view that the earth revolves
around the Sun. Only when the Thirty Years War was over, in 1648, could a sizeable
portion of the population of Europe defy the ecclesiastical power structure to recognize
the cogency of Galileo's truths. If Galileo himself had to undergo the humiliation of an
actual recantation, who are we to complain that the perps, naturally enough, claim that
we will never resolve the issue?
Galileo won. So will we. But only when the power of the perps is broken.
