REASON FOR PLANE GUARD
DETAIL
Every time the VALLEY FORGE
launched or recovered aircraft a
destroyer WllS designated to take

These pictures were taken when
we were oper<'!ting at Pearl Harbor. A plane had rust cracked up
and the pilot was '•n the drink."

CROSSING
The ceremony attendant upon sh1ps cross1ng the Equator, kn, wn
as crossing the line, 1s so ancient that it has been a port of !ea lore
since the days of the early V1kings. Wh1le men have long ceased to
believe in the existence of Neptune, the mytholog1cal god of the seas,
they still perform the ceremon1es of propitiation to His Matesty, the
King of the Deep. This IS one occas1on when the whole ship's company
is vitally Interested and willingly parbc1pates , Those who have crossed
the line are worthy "shellbacks' and the rest are lowly pollywogs.
It is the pleasant duty of the shellbocks to 1n1bate the pollywogs m thP
1nysteries of the underwcster doma1n of Neptunus Rex.
The Royal Works are given by the shellbacks, who are dressed h•
represent King Neptune and H1s Royal Court. While these damp
vigorous boisterous and wholesome ceremonies are enough to make
the condido te sh1ver and quake men are willing to undergo the d1s ·
comfort, knowing that they will not be on the receiVIng end the next
bme the line is crossed and the lrodition is carried on. As Capta•n Hall
wrote one hundred years ago. ' Its evil •s transient, if any evil there be;
wh,fe 1t certainly affords Jack a topic for a month beforehand and fort·
mght ofterwards .... "
Many of the new· born shell backs on our good ship LLOYD
THOMAS may not know the meanmg of a fortnight, but all of them
w1ll long remember the day of the crossing of the line.

Now li~ten, my ch1ldren, and you shall hear
Of crossing the line by your father dear.
Twas eleven /\.M., and strange to say
The weather was cold on the fateful day
The LLOYD THOMAS of the Destroyer Fleet
Neptunus R,ex and h1s court drd meet
The Pollywogs, one twenty strong,
Were formed 1n l1ne-a half m1le longTo appear bdore the JUdge appo1nted
And have the1r heads w1th fuel oil anointed.
Each one was !liven a bitter pill
Designed to make the stomach ill,
Then neatly flipped into a tank,
And as bent:ath the brine he sank
Shellbacks from along the roil
Swung lusty paddles on his tail.
Then out of thE: tonk and through a line
As shellback paddles caressed the spine,
To fall at last c1mong the mobs
Of new Shellbacks-none Pollywogs.
Aint it grand ,,nd glorious feeling?
Like slipping on a banana peeling.
