Deceased 4|P a g e President’s Report We have now come to the end of 2011 and I must say this year was the hardest I have experienced in all my years as a football administrator. At the same time, I am very proud of what has been achieved and the manner in which it has happened. Firstly, I want to recognise the current Executive Committee and the professional manner in which they carried out their duties this year. This would be the best Executive Committee I have been involved with and, in fact, any committee I have been associated with over the years. The Executive have shown to be united as one and, more importantly, placed the interests of the SAAFL above everything else –as a good committee should. At the start of the year, we set some important financial objectives for the League administration, and despite much resistance, most of our objectives have been achieved. We made some very hard decisions, and aggressively pruned extravagant expenses, resulting in savings to clubs of approximately $1,100 each. We did receive criticism for this, including being told the sky ‘ would fall in’and our website would fail. Interestingly, none of this happened and, in fact, our website traffic numbers improved. Quoting from the CEO’ s report last year, he refers to getting ‘ the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus)’ , being prepared to face-up to facts, developing a culture of discipline, weeding out inefficient practices, and getting the right people working, not for themselves, but for the improvement of the League. Well, I am pleased to say the SAAFL Executive have done exactly that, as well as commissioning an in-depth review of the League and its practices. The review has clearly identified many inefficient practices and shortcomings. I must thank Grant Goodall who stepped into the role as interim CEO under very difficult circumstances. Grant steered the League through the rest of the year as well as completing the review of the League, including recommendations for its improvement. The Executive have been wanting to do this for some time, and we were fortunate that Grant’ s presence provided an objective analysis of our administration. There have been a number of staff changes that may have caused some angst among some members; however the interim CEO has done a mighty job successfully navigating through these times with little disruption to the League’ s Gino Capogreco activities. We have now taken the opportunity to re-gear our staffing towards a proper business model, which will provide longstanding benefits to the continuing development of the League and its administration. Sadly, we lost three very significant SAAFL identities in 2011. In January, Tony Doc’ ‘ Clarkson, the Patron of the League since 1991, passed away after a long battle with leukaemia. Doc was 71. Only a month later, Life Member and Chairman of the League from 2001 to 2007, John Wilson, succumbed to cancer at the age of 66. Then in July 2011, we lost a stalwart of the SAAFL in Alan Statton, OAM. Alan was a much valued long-term member of the League holding positions as General Manager, Secretary and Treasurer from 1967. I had the pleasure of knowing Alan for a long period of time and was deeply saddened by his passing. On a brighter note, to all the Grand Final winners, well done! To Sacred Heart OC in Division 1 for getting so close in a fantastic game and to Gaza for the welldeserved win after being top all year. SHOC took the game up to you but you held on. Congratulations! A big thank you to all who volunteered their time to the League and its Clubs. A special thanks to Rex Lambert and his tireless work at Thebarton. To Jack Button and his umpires, Nick Kyriazopoulos and the Tribunal members, and Ian Wallace and the Investigation Committee. Thank you all for your efforts for the League. To all our sponsors, thank you for supporting one of the best leagues in Australia and what you do for grassroots football. We sincerely welcome our two new Life Members; John Schulz and Geoff Heard - whom have provided long and dedicated service to every aspect of our League. They are worthy recipients. To all the clubs; like any Board, the Executive Committee are charged with the responsibility of formulating strategy and ensuring that the operational arm of the organisation implements that strategy. New opportunities have already surfaced, but more importantly, many old doors have reopened to the League. This Executive has a clear vision about managing the League’ s assets and revenue in a responsible manner. The view that the clubs are a bottomless source of funds has been put to the sword, and I promise you that what will eventuate in the future will be fantastic. 5|P a g e Chief Executive Officer’s Report Grant Goodall Joining the SAAFL team in mid-July this year, at a challenging time as the Interim CEO, has been a great privilege and rewarding experience. I say privileged because SAAFL has a proud 100 year history and an enormous number of passionate volunteers at all levels of the competition that make our competition perform at such high standards throughout the season. installation of new lights for next season. The West Torrens City Council is looking to make Thebarton Oval and its surrounds into a major sporting precinct in the next few years. The decision by your Executive Committee to move to Thebarton Oval was a bold and significant vision that will continue to benefit SAAFL’ s success for many years to come. The standard of the games and players has also impressed me greatly. This combined with the genuine personalities involved in our great sport have made my time here all the more enjoyable and productive. Our focus should always be providing support to our clubs, players and supporters and ensuring our games are played and managed to the highest standards possible. As mentioned, this could not happen without the support of the SAAFL organisation volunteers, especially your delegate representatives and Executive Committee; Investigation and Tribunal members lead by Nick Kyriazopoulos and Ian Wallace; Rules and Regulation Committee Chairman, Geoff Heard and Umpires Association Committee Members. A special mention and thanks must also go to Rex Lambert and Ian Wallace who have been tireless in extra duties performed voluntarily. I would like to particularly thank our President, Gino Capogreco, for his support during my contract term. I compliment him and the professional Executive Committee, who dedicated many hours to ensure the finals series were a success, and the organisation continued in a business ‘ as usual’manner, especially with the staff changes that occurred during that period. I have provided a comprehensive organisation review document to the Executive Committee which recommends a new structure for the organisation; identifies potential new revenue opportunities and recommends the implementation of new policies, processes and procedures to improve our efficiency and customer servicing, whilst maintaining a tight control on expenditure and keeping club calls as low as possible. The SAAFL is a relatively small business in term of turnover but is complex due to its sheer size in the management of one of the largest Australian Rules football competitions in Australia, with 66 clubs and 8,000 players. The team of staff at SAAFL numbers over 250, with 210 umpires and the additional numbers made up by seasonal contractors and a handful of administrative staff. At a club level, thank you to the many hundreds of club officials and thousands of supporters who are a vital aspect of our game. To the 8,000 players, congratulations on your commitment to the SAAFL competition and congratulations to all Grand Final winners. Thanks also go to the SAAFL staff, media writers, Grass Roots television programme producer Lisa Wright, umpires, and our sponsors for ensuring that we had a successful season. The seasonal aspect of our organisation and the management of the Thebarton Oval venue do present challenges and in my review I identified the Thebarton Oval venue has the potential to be better utilised. The Thebarton Oval lighting project should see the 6|P a g e Treasurer’s Report Shaun Ryan I take great pride in providing, as far as can be ascertained, the first written Treasurer’ s Report provided to members in the League’ s history. I would like to thank my fellow Executive members for their help and guidance during this difficult year. Becoming the 11th Treasurer in SAAFL history was always in my eyes going to be a challenging job, as the year unfolded it became clear to me that the internal office management of accounting and finance practices required a complete overhaul to bring them up to contemporary standards. The Executive Committee and interim CEO have been working on setting up appropriate financial processes for our organisation, which align to best practice. An example of this is having clearly documented audit trails for all cash payments, something that was introduced at the start of this year but not put in place until recently. This year’ s financial accounts directly reflect the year that we have had. The decision to terminate the contract of the former CEO in addition to paying for an interim replacement CEO has had an impact on the bottom line. We have also needed to employ other contract staff to replace departing staff. The Executive have been very happy with the improvements made in the administration of the business in recent times. In addition, we have utilised the services of a contract qualified accountant to scrutinise the League’ s finances and accounts. This scrutiny, together with our newly established practices, has already identified many areas of improvement in our finances, assets, data entry and reporting. Our current cash position does require some explanation. We currently have approximately $75,000 in our account which is represented as a liability on the balance sheet for the Thebarton lights program. There has been approximately $70,000 paid out in long service leave and annual leave to three staff members who left in late 2011. In moving forward to 2012 the Executive has approved for the panel umpires bonus to be incorporated into the weekly umpires’payment, so this will be reduced from Club’ s call fees. Also, payment for umpires in finals will be made equally by the two competing teams allowing the League to reduce club call fees by the appropriate amount. The administration component of the calls will remain unchanged. It is estimated that there will be a slight increase in insurances, but these will be reflective of what we are charged by the SANFL. The 2012 Budget is planned to deliver approximately $110,000 surplus, which it is aimed to be delivered by increasing new revenue streams through increased use of Thebarton Oval and new sponsorships. In closing I wish to thank all the delegates for their support during my first year and I expect that this Executive’ s willingness to be totally transparent has been appreciated. Thank you. Members should note that funds previously excluded from the financial statements in relation to the Robert Johnston Trust have now been reported. This represents approximately $70,000 consisting of shares and cash. Clubs should be aware that no current member of the Executive was previously aware of the existence of these funds. There have been many disruptions in the administration of the League during this past year but the Executive have already noticed the benefits of our decisions and have remained focussed on a businessas-usual approach. 7|P a g e FINANCIAL REPORT Financial Statements For the year ending 30 September 2011 INCOME STATEMENT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th September 2011 NOTES INCOME Accreditation and Training Advertising Calls Centenary Functions Development Grants Dividends and Interest from Investments Fines Gate Taking, Major Round Freehold Property Income Insurance Recoveries Junior Football Income League History Loan Jumper Hire Income Medal Count Function Media Contributions from members NAB Challenge Income Sales of match equipment Royalties Sponsorships and Grants State and Representative Football Sundries Thebarton Precinct Web Photo Sales TOTAL INCOME EXPENSES Accreditation and Training Advertising Affiliation Fees & Expenses Annual Dinner Audit Fees AAFC Expenses Bad Debts Bank Fees Canteen and Catering Centenary Activities Communication Expense Depreciation Entertainment Football Newspaper History Expense Honoraria Impairment of stock Information Technology Insurance –General Interest Expense Junior Football League Uniforms Major Round Expenses Medal Count Expenses Medals and Trophies 2011 4,061 16,844 326,728 32,685 22,294 12,729 14,390 148,719 49,221 109,573 1,238 (329) 1,218 24,511 8,006 30,342 2,257 11,427 162,969 3,899 25,877 196,827 1,994 __________ 2010 6,424 9,586 323,241 14,438 12,312 20,850 164,506 26,181 106,980 1,500 4,934 1,615 23,963 48,560 3,760 20,219 158,360 2,727 2,235 125,898 1,667 __________ 1,207,480 1,079,956 1,512 3,195 1,975 10,426 490 4,098 26,500 33,822 22,112 39,691 1,149 28,508 370 1,000 54,520 58,283 101,662 2 656 13,461 23,133 13,526 17,122 240 3,241 2,883 1,900 4,875 3,956 6,648 1,818 18,297 38,114 9,535 850 54,144 99,783 241 388 14,499 22,521 14,290 8|P a g e INCOME STATEMENT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th September 2011 (Continued) NOTES Media Expense Motor Vehicle Expense NAB Challenge Expenses Payroll Expenses Photocopying Photo Sales Printing and Stationery Professional Fees Repairs and Maintenance Seminar Expense Staff Training State and Representative Football Sundry Taxes and Charges Thebarton Precinct Expenses Travel Expenses Umpires Fees and Expenses Utilities TOTAL EXPENSES OPERATING SURPLUS (DEFICIT) Accumulated Funds Beginning of Year Adjustment to accumulated funds Accumulated Funds End of Year 2011 2010 31,658 52,052 7,015 352,644 6,008 763 12,616 43,313 1,819 82 2,997 30,681 20,850 24,570 230,045 482 111,028 __________ 34,345 18,039 377,999 7,350 19,699 15,117 1,106 2,609 23,091 6,133 14,196 134,667 24 107,144 528 __________ 1,368,714 1,077,392 (161,234) 2,564 451,496 449,633 - The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis using historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where stated, current valuation of non-current assets. The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous year unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report. (a) Income Tax The League is exempt from Income Tax under Section 23 g (iii) of the Income Tax Assessment Act. (b) Inventories Inventories consist of match equipment and general merchandise and are valued at the lower of cost or net realisable value. (c) Investments Investments are valued at recoverable amount which is the quoted market value in the case of shares in listed companies, and income is brought into account on an accrual basis. Expected net cash flows from investments have not been discounted to present value in determining recoverable amount. (d) Provision for Employee Entitlements Provision has been made for the League’ s liability for annual leave and long service leave at balance date. Long service leave is accrued for all employees with more than five years of service with the League. The League has no legal obligation to provide benefits to employees on retirement. All entitlements have been measured at the nominal amount rather than present value of estimated future cash flows. Contributions are made by the League to an Employee Superannuation Fund, and are charged as expenses as incurred. (e) Property & Equipment The depreciable amount of Property & Equipment is depreciated over the estimated life of the asset, commencing from the time that the asset is held ready for use. The carrying amount of property and equipment is reviewed annually to ensure that it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flow which will be received from the assets' employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have been discounted to present values in determining the recoverable amount. (f) Impairment of Assets At each reporting date, the League reviews the carrying value of its assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset's fair value less cost to sell and value in use, is compared to the asset's carrying value. Any excess of the asset's carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement. (g) Cash and Investments brought to account In a prior period, the SAAFL received donations for a player seriously injured during a football game, the intention being that the funds would be used to support the injured player. These funds have been recognised in the financial statements for the first time this year within short term deposits ($23,817) and investments ($51,068). Following the death of the player, legal opinion is to be obtained on the correct ownership and treatment of these funds and income arising thereon. 11 | P a g e NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING 30 September 2011 (Continued) (h) Comparative Figures Comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in presentation for the current financial year where required by Accounting Standards or as a result of changes in accounting policy. Executive Committee’ s Responsibility for the Financial Report The executive committee of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report and have determined that the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, which form part of the financial report, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (South Australia) and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The executive committee’ s responsibilities also include establishing and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances. Auditor’ s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used, as described in Note 1, are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’ s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’ s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’ s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the executive committee’ s financial reporting under the Associations Incorporation Act (South Australia). We disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared. Spencer Partner th Dated this 18 day of November, 2011 Adelaide 16 | P a g e Umpiring Manager’s Report Jack Button Reviewing the past year has been an exciting time. This is where all the hard work by umpires and other matchday officials is acknowledged, but more so because the proof of all this hard work is made evident. The diligence which all umpires, coaches and support people have brought to their positions is to be commended. Return of match day paperwork this year has been exceptional. In season 2011: Established practices such as accreditation, punctuality, communication of match-day issues, training and coaching focus has been consolidated from 2010 and we will continue to improve on these criteria in 2012. This year has been a time for change in leadership, which inevitably brings its own issues and challenges. However, the professionalism displayed by coaching staff and umpires in general has been of a high quality. The education of umpires regarding accreditation and coaching has had a focus on player safety (in particular the ball player), and this has added to the overall positive outcome for the year. 15 Club umpires went through 3 modules of Level 1 Accreditation League appointed boundary umpires officiated in Division 4 for the first time A female field umpire officiated in a Division 1 A game for the first time in our history Matt Konetschka, a SAAFL Division 1 Grand Final boundary umpire from 2010, officiated in the SANFL Grand Final in 2011 26 umpires made their debut at Division 1 level across field, boundary and goal umpiring Thanks to John Morrison, Stephen Mallett, Peter Angel and all other support coaching staff for all their work this year, and also my personal thanks must go to Barry Oates for being a constant source of information and support. I have specifically implemented a shift towards more open lines of communication with the clubs this year, and the plan is to build on this in 2012 with a captains ‘ and coaches night’ . The aim of such an event is to break down the barriers and myths between these equally important groups. The Tribunal format for standard reports laid by the umpire have remained unchanged, however the process of charges being laid through investigations was refined further this year with most clubs accepting that charges laid as a result of an investigation instigated by a club or person observing an incident that was not reported by the umpire on the day leading to the club taking the initiative. The Investigation Committee, comprising Ian Wallace and John Staker, work through numerous complaints either of unacceptable conduct by players or club officials both on and off the field of play, and then determine whether a charge should be laid against a player or a club official. The review investigation process has worked extremely successfully this year. Appeals against Tribunal decisions for penalties/suspensions imposed of 3 matches or more was introduced by the League at the start of the 2011 football season with varying degrees of success. This was mainly due to Clubs and their officials/advisors not being clear with the new rule or the process. It is advisable that all Clubs that resolve to enter the appeal process ensure the grounds for the appeal be determined, and a strong case be put as to why the original decision would need to overturned or the penalty is manifestly too high. I am sure that this process, after the initial teething period, will be better understood in the future by the Clubs allowing for a smoother process. I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Executive who sat on the Tribunal Appeal Board as it was an opportunity for them to have a better understanding of the general mechanics, and also have an understanding as to where they may be able to assist the Clubs in the future on such matters. Tribunals deliberated on 143 reports in 2011 (a 6.0% increase compared with the 2010 season). The reports have increased compared to the previous year albeit marginally. The reports range from striking another player (the most common) to offences against umpires. It seems that the existence of the Tribunal in an organised football competition is an accepted part of the process and it will adjudicate on any on-field offence that is brought before it. This does not mean that clubs should not take responsibility for the on-field conduct of their players. It is imperative that both the Clubs and players work towards the enjoyment of an extremely competitive game of football and not the conduct as displayed by the majority of player reports that have been lodged with the Tribunal this year. Support of umpires in all Divisions, and at all levels of experience, by all Clubs is imperative if our game is to prosper. We are not seeing the camaraderie that is necessary within both ranks (playing and umpiring) that will bring about an environment that will encourage either the young or the retired player to take up the challenge. This is imperative as one of the major lifelines of our competition will be lost. The Tribunal, with the support of the Executive Committee, are steadfast in their support of the umpires and will continue to do their utmost in providing the right environment for this important group to make their contribution for the benefit of our game. We need all Clubs to support this position otherwise we will not succeed. I will continue to raise concerns in relation to the presentation of some umpires’evidence on the night of a Tribunal hearing as their evidence continues to cause confusion for all members of the Tribunal with its lack of substance. This matter will need the attention of the umpiring coaching panel as there is a need to have all umpires firstly confident to report, and secondly confident to present their case at Tribunal without fear. Tribunal members will continue to assist where possible without compromising the hearing. Junior umpires continue to require assistance as they attempt to grasp the reporting/tribunal process, so there has to be a re-think by the League, the umpire coaching panel, and Tribunal members as to how they can assist the younger group. I take this opportunity to thank all members of the Executive Committee for their support and to and the administration staff for their expertise and assistance. In conclusion I thank all members of the Tribunal for their effort during the 2011 season. It is without question the most capable group of people with whom I continue to enjoy working with. Their burning desire to contribute to the SAAFL for the betterment of football is beyond question and their knowledge is second to none, while all have the ability to be resolute and fair in all decisions. As the son of a Methodist minister, Alan grew up moving from one country town to another every three years - Yacka, Booleroo Centre, where Alan started school, Clarendon and Nairne - before the family came back to the city, to Alberton. Alan decided the right thing to do was to barrack for the local football team, Port Adelaide, but later switched to Norwood. He attended Prince Alfred College and excelled at his first love, cricket. At 15, he left school to work at Phoenix Assurance Company. In 1943, at 17, Alan joined the Navy. After World War II, he was discharged in 1946, proud to have served his country. He remained a member of Payneham RSL. Alan returned to his job at the Phoenix Assurance Company, climbing the ladder to assistant manager. He retired in 1983. When visiting his parents in Berri, Alan met Yvonne Plush. They married in February, 1950, and were to have five daughters. In 1974, Phoenix Assurance moved the family to Melbourne and then in 1976 it returned to Adelaide. Other than Yvonne and their family, Alan's love was sport, particularly cricket and football. In 1952, he became assistant secretary of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and was secretary of the PAC Old Scholars Cricket Club. In 1972, Alan was team manager of the South Australian Sheffield Shield team. years. He helped develop the Amateur League grade for players with an intellectual disability. Alan once said amateur football produced some of the best AFL and SANFL footballers over the years. At one stage, amateur football was providing sport and mateship for 4000 young men every Saturday and giving young men something to focus on in life. "You deal with people and players from all walks of life," he said. "It doesn't matter wherever they are from or whatever they look like, because inside they're good people playing football and enjoying having a kick. "That's amateur football; it's different to anywhere else." Alan was SAAFL secretary from 1967-70, administration officer for several periods between 1972 and 1997, treasurer from 1970-77, general manager from 1998-99 and delegate to the AAFC from 1962-1996, including its secretary-treasurer 1986-1996. He was awarded SAAFL life membership in 1974. Alan did a great deal for the community, helping migrants learn to read English and serving on school councils. Much of his work was unpaid, knowing he helped make it possible for tens of thousands of young men to participate in sport he loved. In 2000, Alan was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his service to the Kensington Cricket Club and to SA Amateur Football League. In 2001, he was awarded the Centenary Medal for service to the SAAFL and in 2002 he received his Order of Australia Medal for service to sports administration, particularly Australian football. The U/17 representative team played two matches, one against the Hills League at Heathfield winning 9.12 to 5.18, and another against the Southern League losing 7.8 to 9.12. The U/23 representative team also played the Southern League at Reynella Oval for the Coca-Cola Challenge Cup winning 13.3 to 10.6 and capped off the year by beating the VAFA in Melbourne 9.17 to 7.12. Paul Merritt of the Gaza club won the D1 Eric Pfitzner medal and Goodwood Saints the D1 Premiership. 10 YEARS AGO: 2001 The League faced many issues and had acted on quite a few with the introduction of a Final Five System from D2D6 respectively (previously only D1) and Sunday Finals. A complete overhaul of the Constitution and Rules and Regulations was undertaken and the feasibility of relocating the League’ s headquarters to Thebarton Oval. The senior state team played the VAFA at Elsternwick Park in June and lost 19.4 to 14.12. The U/17 side travelled to Port Augusta to play the Spencer Gulf League U/18 side. This match was played as a curtain raiser to the Spencer Gulf League Central Australia League match and was part of celebrating 100 years of football in Port Augusta. The D1 Eric Pfitzner medal was won by Jamie Sibbick from Adelaide University and Kilburn won the D1 Premiership defeating Adelaide University 19.5 to 14.7. 20 YEARS AGO: 1991 After six years of major sponsorship from Carlton and United Breweries, a four year sponsorship agreement was signed with the SA Brewing Company. The umpires had a new coach in Peter Francis replacing Geoff Creek after a three year stint. New coaches at A1 level were Daryl West (Adelaide University), Owen Kelly (Gaza), Warren Ploenges (Goodwood Saints), Rod Burton (Riverside), David Tiller (Scotch OC), Grant Lyon (SPOC) and Glen Elliott (Broadview). The AAFC Carnival was held in WA with Evan Katsaros as coach. SA lost the first game against WA, 18.16 to 15.7. This loss was critical for SA having won against both Victoria and Tasmania as WA went through undefeated to win their first ever Carnival. Shane Moore became the first Kilburn player to win the D1 Eric Pfitzner medal, with Greek Camden taking out the D1 title 9.12 to Kilburn 9.1. 50 YEARS AGO: 1961 In June 1961 the Amateur League acquired rooms in Tynte Street, North Adelaide. Alan Statton took over from A.F.R. Dodd as Secretary. Former State player, secretary of Kenilworth and long serving member of the Umpire and Permit Committee, Hibble Main, was awarded Life Membership of the Amateur League. Two new clubs in Seaton Ramblers (West Torrens Association) and the Teachers were admitted to the League. The Teacher’ s team was mainly comprised of players who had graduated in their teaching course, and so did not qualify for the Teachers College team. The state team which included eight University players and four from Kilburn beat Victoria at the Adelaide Oval 13.12 to 10.19. This was SA’ s first win against Victoria since 1955. Neil Hawke won the A1 Hone Medal playing for Brighton. University won the A1 Premiership defeating Kilburn 8.6 to 3.8. 45 | P a g e Division 1R Premier –Pearson Cup Henley Leading goalkicking trophy EA Davoren Medal Samuel Harvey Cail Harris Sacred Heart OC Henley 70 goals* Scot Ramsay *Goals scored at the end of the minor round Gaza Broadview B.
