AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG
Originally bred by NSW Cattle Farmer
Thomas Hall when he crossed his parents
Dogs with local Dingoes he had tamed.
The resulting Dogs were known as Halls
Heelers. After Halls death in 1870, the Dogs
became available beyond the Hall family
and their associates. They were subsequently developed into two modern breeds
- the Australian Cattle Dog and the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. The Aust Cattle
Dog makes a wonderful family Dog that
is best suited to other Dogs of the same
breed, and needs strong leadership.
The Australian Cattle Dog aka Blue
Heeler or Red Heeler is a breed of
Herding Dog originally developed
in Australia for droving cattle long
distances, over harsh terrain. It is a
medium sized Dog with a short, thick
coat of either brown or black hair that
is speckled through a white base coat
giving the appearance or a blue or
red coloured Dog.
It is an energetic, intelligent Cattle Dog with
a very independent, dominating streak.
The the term heeler refers to their innate
desire to nip at the heels of cattle or small
children when running. This is a Dog who
forms strong bonds with its owners and can
be very protective of them and their possessions.

THE DOG ON THE
TUCKERBOX
How fantastic, an internationally recognised Australian icon, “The Dog on the Tucker Box” said to be an
Australian Cattle Dog, is located 5 miles (8 km) north of
Gundagai, just off the Hume Highway.
the legend began in the 1850’s with the poem “Bullocky Bill” by an otherwise unknown
author ‘Bowyang Yorke’, about the partnership of the bullockies who opened up the land
to settlers, and the dogs who accompanied them and guarded their possessions.
A version amended by Jack Moses captured the imagination of Australians both in the
bush and throughout the colonies in the early 1900s. The move to create a monument to
the early pioneers, featuring the now famous Dog, grew through the 1920s, culminating in
the unveiling of the Dog on the Tucker Box statue on 28 November 1932. The legend was
then immortalised in popular song by Jack O’Hagan, author of Along the Road to Gundagai, with Where the Dog Sits on the Tucker Box. The Dog and its many songs and poems
have put Gundagai firmly on the world map.
They are said to celebrate his birthday each year in November, so if you are travelling
through Gundegai, spend a moment to think about the Bullockies who travelled those
roads and enjoy some delicious food on route.

One of the many joys of owning
a dog is walking with them on a
daily basis.
Exercise is great for both you and your dog,
but if your dog is pulling you down the
street - the enjoyment quickly disappears!
With time and patience, you can teach your
dog to walk by your side and not pull on
their lead. Here are some suggestions:
Walking beside you with no lead
• At home take your dog off lead
• Have treats with you
• Start walking, but don’t look, talk or give
your dog any attention
• If your dog comes to your side, give them
a treat
• If the dog runs past you, walk in the
opposite direction, treat them for coming
towards you
• Keep rewarding your dog for being by
your side
Adding a cue
• Use a word like “close”, “side” or “here”
to cue your dog for the behaviour of loose
lead walking
• When your dog is beside you, give your
cue, walk a few steps and then reward
your dog
• Over time you are going to give your cue
and walk further before you reward your
dog
Eventually you will be able to give your dog
the cue and not constantly reward them for
walking by your side

Before we drank water from a tap, we had
to source it from rivers, streams and wells,
the same is true for animals, however then,
it was pure and clean, without chemical
additives.
The pipes that deliver water to households
today are often over 100 years old and
mostly made from galvanised steel. The
build up from deposits of rust and other foreign material leads to pipes being partially

also lifetime registered with the NSW Animal
Registry. If you adopt a puppy or kitten who
was too young to be desexed before adoption, the cost of his or her desexing at our vet is

the animal desexed before they are 5 months
old. It is also your responsibility to register
the animal after desexing, or no later than 6
months old. While in foster care, they receive
house training and basic obedience training.

problems than the hardy cross breeds we
mainly rescue.

needed to raise and train a puppy or kitten

and cats. You can skip past the house training,
chewing, and chaos of a baby and choose an
adult. Adults are already trained and their size
and temperament are known …and you can
teach an old dog new tricks!

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a well
known culinary herb that is a vital part of the
Mediterranean cuisine. Rosemary belongs
to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is
native to the Mediterranean. It is cultivated
worldwide and grows best in Mediterranean
climate. Apart from giving Mediterranean
dishes their authentic aroma it also has
many health benefits.
Rosemary has been used for centuries as
a medicinal herb mainly as a tonic and to
improve the memory. It has many active
constituents like volatile oil, flavonoids and
tannins. The dried leaves are used to make
infusions and tinctures.
For its ability to stimulate the circulation
Rosemary is also known as the “European
Ginkgo” as it has similar effects. This
makes Rosemary very valuable to improve
memory and mental alertness. It can be
used to address health problems caused by
weak circulation like hypotension or a poor
digestion.
Rosemary has also positive effects on
the liver. It protects the liver cells from
damage and also aids the liver to clear toxic
substances. Therefore Rosemary is useful
in primary liver problems and digestive
disorders.
Rosemary is a very strong antioxidant.
Antioxidants protect cells and are useful to
prevent disease and aging, support organs
and body functions and aid convalescence.
Even the food industry makes use of this
activity and uses Rosemary to conserve
food, especially meat.
Creams and salves containing Rosemary can
be applied to the skin and are used to help
with joint and muscle pain.
Rosemary is a safe herb to use. No adverse
effects are expected if not comsumed in
large quantities. Rosemary can also be
given alongside conventional medication as
herb drub interactions are unknown.

Bowen is a soft tissue technique
where by the Therapist applies
a transverse move across the
fibres of muscles, ligaments and
tendons whilst having a marked
influence on the connective tissue.
The technique also influences known
trigger points (pain points) and acupuncture points. Bowen is not massage.
Bowen Therapists do a single transverse
(two directional) move at a specific
location and then leave the area alone,
whereas massage therapists often do
repeated movements along muscle fibres, working throughout the body. The
technique was developed by an Australian Tom Bowen but the technique is also

HOW TO COMFORT
YOUR GRIEVING
DOG?
We all know how hard it is to comfort a
Human who has lost a much loved pet, but
at least we can talk them through it and
get them to vocalise their feelings, but
comforting a dog that has lost a mate is a
little more complicated, and requires a little
more thought.
Our four legged friends demonstrate their
sadness in different ways, some refusing to
eat, others try to escape, perhaps in search
of their missing companion, and some just
seem to know instinctively whats happened
and become needy, following you around
from room to room. What ever type of loss
they’ve experienced, you need to ensure
that special thought and care is taken to
help them cope.
There are many things you can do to help
them get ontop of things, regular walks and
outdoor play, but dont leave them alone
too much, you need to keep up the routine
as exercise is natures way of releasing
endorphines that will bring about feelings
of joy and contentment. Reward them with
a new variety of delicious healthy treats to
make things interesting again. The two of
you will experience that connection and it
will help you grieve the loss together which
will set the stage for a new beginning.
Remember to keep up with the normal
training routine, if you fail to take that
morning stroll or afternoon walk, it will likely
impact your dog negatively and highlight
the loss in their lives. It is up to you to be
a good leader and to show them how to
overcome the sadness in their lives.

Whatever you do, dont rush out and
replace the lost dog as this is often counter
productive and can make things worse. Its
not easy to repair a broken heart whether
dog or human, spend time together and
you will find that time will heal you both.
If you feel your dog is not responding to
the extra love and attention, despite your
attempts, then you might want to ask your

grieving or feeling out of sorts.

Swimming is a great way of exercising your
older dog; it is a non-weight bearing, low
impact exercise, which makes joint movement easier. Swimming will also increase
their cardiovascular system and can reduce
weight if they have gained a few kilos. It
builds and strengthens muscles, increases
energy levels and can reduce painful swelling in joints.

off their bed, can’t jump in the car,
needs to be lifted, and hesitates to

Arthritis is most common in older dogs and
can occur in any joint, most commonly the
legs, neck and back (spine) and can cause
pain and inflammation along with stiffness,

strength, and mobility.
Swimming in warm water is important
especially for arthritic dogs as it allows the
muscles to work more efficiently and helps
to aid blood circulation without risk of
cramping.
Fitness and stamina will increase and you
may see improvement in climbing stairs,
getting in and out of the car, increased
comfort with other activities such as going
for walks and becoming more interested in
life in general.
Exercising your older dog will promote longevity and create a better quality of life for
your loved pet. Just because they are older
now doesn’t mean they can’t have some
gentle exercise and have an outing!

What’s ‘Normal’
Poop for Your
Dog?
Generally speaking,
a healthy canine
stool is moist and
firm, and has a mild
odor.
Dogs fed
processed kibble
(which I don’t
recommend)
typically produce
large quantities of
voluminous poop
for several reasons.
First, most kibble
manufacturers
addunnaturally high
amounts of fiber (beet pulp, soybean, and
rice hulls, as well as cellulose,” otherwise
known as wood fiber, or sawdust). The
normal fiber content of the ancestral diet

is between 4 and 6 percent. The fiber
content of many dry foods is greater than
15 percent, and most “diet” or “lite” foods
contain more than 28 percent fiber.
Dogs eating kibble also produce a stinkier
poop because their bodies aren’t designed
to absorb certain nutrients in those diets
(for example, grain and other starches,
including the unnaturally high potato and
pea content found in many “grain free”
foods). In some instances, it can feel like
your dog is passing out more volume of
waste than the food volume she ate!
Raw fed dogs, on the other hand, tend
to produce significantly less poop that is
also smaller in size, firmer, and significantly
less stinky. Dogs eating a high mineral
raw food diet will produce poo that turns
a much lighter color within 24 hours and
disintegrates very quickly.
Dogs eating raw foods that could be too
high in calcium or bone pass white, chalky
feces, and may suffer from obstipation.

Regardless of your dog’s diet, it’s important
to know what her poop looks and smells
like normally so that you’ll be immediately
aware of any changes in frequency,
consistency, size, color, or smell.
One of the most obvious signs of a
potential health problem in dogs is
diarrhea, and diarrhea can have different
characteristics depending on its cause.
Types of Dog Diarrhea
In the following situations, unless the
problem clears up on its own within a day
or so, I recommend making an appointment
with your veterinarian.
Soft Stool
A soft stool with no
visible blood or mucous
might indicate either
a dietary change or
indiscriminate eating.
However, it can also
signal the presence of
an intestinal parasite
such as giardia.
A greasy-looking gray stool can be a sign of
too much fat in your dog’s diet, which can
trigger pancreatitis, which is inflammation
of the pancreas that can range from very
mild to life threatening.
A black, tarry stool typically indicates the
presence of old blood somewhere in the

dog’s digestive system. It can be a sign of
injury to the GI tract from indiscriminate
eating, and it can also be a sign of a very
serious disease such as cancer.
Watery Stool
Watery diarrhea can
be a sign of stress or a
viral (e.g., parvovirus) or
parasitic infection and
can lead very quickly to
dehydration, especially
in puppies.
A soft stool containing
or coated with mucous
may indicate the presence of parvovirus or
parasites.
A soft stool with visible worms, eggs, or
other uninvited guests is a clear indiction of
a parasite infestation.
Stool with Mucus
Firm, soft, or runny poop containing blood
or blood clots is almost always a sign of a
serious health problem requiring immediate attention. Fresh blood indicates current
bleeding, typically from the large intestine
or the anus or anal glands. There could
be a perforation of the intestinal wall from
something the dog ingested, or from the
eruption of a tumor or ulcer.
CAUSES OF DIARRHEA
Since diarrhea is a symptom of multiple health problems, it also
has multiple causes.
These include:
• Change in diet
• Toxins
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Food intolerance, sensitivity,
allergy
• Idiopathic hemorrhagic
gastroenteritis
• Small intestine bacterial
overgrowth (SIBO)
• Intestinal parasites
• Lymphangiectasia
• Histoplasma enteritis or colitis
• Indiscriminate eating
• Tumors
• Intestinal obstruction
• Bacterial infection
• Rectal polyps
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Viral infection
• Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
• Histiocytic ulcerative colitis
quickly. Once he’s out, he dashes off to find
a suitable spot and passes loose, watery
stool. Alternatively, if we’re not around
when the urgency hits, we come home to an
accident on the floor.
But what many dog parents don’t realize is
that sometimes diarrhea causes straining to
go, making it look more like constipation
than diarrhea. That’s because diarrhea upsets
the normal rhythm of the muscle contractions in your dog’s intestinal tract, giving
her the feeling that she constantly needs to
poop. So even though she’s hunched over
and straining, her colon might be empty
after repeated bouts of loose stool. And in
cases of chronic diarrhea, many dogs don’t
have accidents in the house and don’t have
fecal urgency, they simply always have loose,
watery stools.
Other symptoms that can go along with
diarrhea include fever, lethargy, malaise, loss
of appetite, and dehydration. Puppies, small
dogs, and seniors are at risk of dehydration
from just one round of explosive diarrhea.
Small bowel diarrhea can also be confusing
to owners, as the first part of the stool is
firm, followed by soft or very loose second
half of the bowel movement, which can indicate a variety of issues including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, maldigestion,
malabsorption, food intolerances, exocrine
pancreatic insufficiency, dybiosis, or IBS.

The Not-So-Obvious Symptoms
of Diarrhea
When most of us think of a dog with diarrhea, we picture the poor pup standing
anxiously at the door, needing to get out
If you see blood in your pet’s stool or she’s
weak or shows other signs of debilitation
along with the diarrhea, you should make
an appointment with the vet. If your dog
seems fine but is experiencing recurrent
bouts of diarrhea, it’s time for a checkup.
It’s important to bring a sample of your
dog’s stool to your appointment, even if it’s
watery. Use a plastic bag and shovel a bit
in there to take with you. This will help your
vet identify potential underlying causes for
the diarrhea.

Home Care for Diarrhea in Healthy Dogs
If your pet is an adult, otherwise healthy,
and behaving normally except for the
diarrhea, I recommend you withhold
food – NOT WATER – for 12 hours. At the
12-hour mark, offer a bland diet. I recommend cooked ground turkey and plain 100
percent pumpkin.
My favorite all-natural anti-diarrhea
remedy is an herb called slippery elm
bark. I recommend always having some on
hand so when you need it, it’s right there.
Slippery elm is safe for puppies, adults,
and geriatric dogs and it is completely safe
when blended with other medications. I
recommend about a half teaspoon for each
10 pounds of body weight, mixed into the
bland diet twice daily.

Most healthy dogs experience an occasional episode of loose stool or diarrhea that resolves within 12 to 24 hours. The underlying

Firm your butt and thighs while your Dog
gets his jump on.
Winter is a great time to exercise,
helps circulation and keeps you from
overeating. The obesity epidemic is
not limited to Humans, pets too have
issues with being overweight, especially Dogs.
Stand with your legs shoulder width apart.
Squat and tap your Dog with his favourite
toy. As you rise, lift the toy above your
head. Your Dog will jump up for it. Do 10
repititions and you’ll have buns of steel in
no time!
Dont make your Dog a statistic, start
excersing regularly with your Dog at your
side so both of you can be healthy and fit.
RUNNING
Consider running with your Dog: Your Dog
will lose weight while lapping up the extra
time outside and your will stay fit as a result.
Many Vets recommend curbing pet
behavioural issues with a regular exercise
régime. Your Dog can expend his extra
energy without having to resort to
destructiveness as a result of boredom.
TIP
Make sure the exercises you
choose are suitable for the breed
of Dog you have ie small Dogs with
short legs and other stocky breeds
will find it harder to keep up with
your mileage than a bigger breed.
AB CRUNCHING
You can exercise your abdominal muscles
while you exercise your Dog. When you’re
ready to start the crunches, grab a ball and
throw it for your Dog to chase after. While
he’s fetching the ball, you can definitely
get in several reps of ab crunching before
he returns, standing with your legs apart,
lift your knee to meet your elbow, as many
times each side as you can squeeze in,

then repeat. You can alternate this with
lifing your legs, one at a time, either side,
up straight in front to meet your arms
outstretched, your Dog will love chasing
those balls, you only need do as many as
you feel comfortable with.
TIP
If you Dog is ball obsessed, try
using his favourite toy or just
do the crunches in between other
play activities.
TRICEP DIPS
If you have access to a footpath with seats
or walls along the way, stop running and do
10 tricep dips while your Dog takes 5, with
your back to the edge of the seat placing
your hands behind you on the seat, lower
your self up and down using your arms, then
keep running/walking until you come to the
next dip point. Your arms will look amazing!
LUNGES
Towards the end of your run/walk, slow the
pace down and do some leg lunges (about
10 per set). Have some treats handy and
encourage your Dog to walk along side you

STAIR CLIMB
Climbing the steps together will sculpt
your legs and help your Dog burn off his
breakfast. Put your Dog on the lead and
pick a long staircase either in your house or

stairs with your pet by your side and vary

Did you know a pat can be turned
into a powerful healing activity?
We all love to pat our dogs and they surely
love the patting. It is this contact that is
natural and very beneficial for both humans
and dogs.
What is very important to consider is the
therapeutic benefits that touch can provide
for both the dog and the human applying
that touch.
In order to excite you about the benefits
of touch it is necessary to offer what basic
hands on can achieve. These are:
• Improves circulation
• Improves lymphatic flow
• Improves the range of motion
around joints
• Relaxes the body
• Aids recovery from illness
Now these outcomes are very powerful and
often it is hard to convince the dog owner
that all this can be achieved through noncomplicated hands on in the form of basic
hands on techniques.
By applying a basic long flowing open
handed technique to the dog these benefits
can be achieved.
Starting at the side of the nose and draw
your open hand and drag along the entire
body, pressing in a little deeper as you feel
more muscle mass. As you proceed you will
feel the body getting warmer.
The muscles will start to relax and more
blood flow will weave its way throughout
the body sending healing fluids to all areas.

little more time on that area.
