55+ INDEPENDENT LIVING
Who's town? Tom's Town! As many native Kansas
Citians know the nefarious and roaring times of the
1920's in Kansas City, nothing quite encapsulates
that period in history in these neck of the woods
quite like political machine "Boss Tom" Pendergast!
Prohibition is over, but that era in Kansas City has
made a resurgence in popular culture today with the
new-age "speak easy". Kansas City hails with about 5
or 6 speak easy themed bars and restaurants, and
many of them in buildings that originally housed the
real deal! Keeping in theme with this era, a local
spirits distillery has opened under the name, Tom's
Town! They have a variety of Gins, Bourbons,
and Vodka that attribute their notoriety to this
period of history with names like "Pendergast Gold
Bourbon", "McElroy's Corruption Gin", and "Eli's
Strongarm Vodka". We will be touring this new
distillery, but the catch is...we only have five tickets
for this event...they are extremely hard to get. You
can purchase your tickets in the Community Life
Office for $10. With any such popularity from this
trip we will try to acquire more tickets for future
visits! We will also be having lunch at a historic
speak from the 1920's (formerly the Fitzpatrick
Saloon), which is the Majestic Steakhouse! Come
along for a day of roaring 20's fun! Make sure to
grab your ticket today! The password is "Big Tom
sent you". Come have some fun with us!

Path to Well-Being
Thriving
Personality is key in everyday
conversation, and Resident Jane
Byrnes has a great personality for
people! Being around people and
sharing her love of art as well as
her compassion for people is how
she thrives at our community.
Jane has many years of
experience as an artist and she
loves to share her passion for art
will that she meets. This month she
will be sharing her creative sense with us in two impromptu classes
called Mardi Gras Mask Making (February 1st) and Valentine Card
Making (February 3rd & 8th). Next semester for Watermark
University Jane is jumping in with both feet to the instructor
position in her class Beginning Drawing. She will be teaching us
how to set up the foundations for drawing. This will be her first
time as a Watermark University Instructor and she is delighted to
have the opportunity to share her aspirations for the art world with
others!
Since Jane has become a Resident at The Fountains at
Greenbriar she has really embraced her opportunities for thriving
through activities, Watermark University classes, and other
community offerings. This month we would like to acknowledge
her commitment to people and creating possibilities for others to
thrive too! We look forward to the amazing potential that will be
coming out of Jane's art classes and we hope that others will find
the inspiration and gusto for creating that she so profoundly
possesses. Thank you for helping to make Greenbriar an
extraordinary community!
Join Catholic Charities Nurse Jenny
Slayden for her health presentation on
Heart Health. You will learn about
nutritional information to help with
proper dietary care for promoting heart
health as well as exercise and early
detection of heart disease. This class will
help to inform you about all the different
ways that you can proactively assist in
maintaining a healthy functioning heart.
Make sure to stop by the theatre on
February 16th at 1:30 pm to learn some
things that will help to improve your
overall heart health! Come and learn
with us!
Associate Feature
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new Dining
Services Director, Michael Eiserman! He has an illustrious career in the
food service industry and comes highly recommended in his professional
skills. He is also a retired Army veteran and served in Operation Desert
Storm during the Persian Gulf War. He loves to spend his free time perusing
the fine cuisine scene in Kansas City. He's attending the Kansas City
Restaurant Week (Jan. 17-23) to increase his awareness and acuity to fine
dining cuisine. No doubt, he will probably be taking his findings and
sharing them here with the Residents at Greenbriar. He is always searching
for new and inventive ways to better serve the Residents in the community.
If you are a food aficionado like Mike, then join him in his February 5th
class of Wine and Cheese Tasting paired with Happy Hour...Bon Appetite!

history of the native springs of this area. Admission is free!
Pictures are worth a thousand words!
TRANSPORTATION POLICY REFRESHER!
(What you need to know for all things transportation!)
From time-to-time it never hurts to have a reminder
about how things work. We thought that it might be a
good opportunity to remind long-standing Residents as
well as new Residents to the community about the
transportation policy.
additional $2 charge for each of the miles beyond the
15 miles. We also ask that for your medical
transportation appointments that you reserve/make an
appointment at a minimum of 48 hours prior to your
scheduled appointment day and time.
We have a variety of transportation options available
for you to utilize each and every week. On Mondays
and Fridays we have grocery/errands transportation
services (grocery stores are different options each of
those days). On Monday we also have shopping
available at the Independence Commons and Wal-Mart
for your convenience. The rest of the week (TuesdayThursday) we have medical transportation and we can
accommodate transportation within 15 miles of
Greenbriar (30 miles roundtrip). If your appointment
goes beyond the allotted 15 miles there is an
On Saturdays and other days/evenings during the week
we will have outings out of the community and it is
our policy that we leave on time for those scheduled
outings. Out of respect for the time of other Residents
attending these outings we ask that you arrive at least
15-20 minutes early to each scheduled outing. Make
sure to sign up in the activities binder located at the
front desk. Please follow these same practices for
Sunday church transportation as well. It is our hopes to
provide an excellent and efficient transportation
service to you, our Greenbriar Residents!
Featured Image: Velma Maxwell is adorning her Chiefs gear
watching the playoff game against the Houston Texans and
cheering the Chiefs on to a 30-0 victory! Next up...Tom Brady
and the New England chowder-heads!
Top Left: Dorothy Erickson is hooping and hollering for the
Chiefs team! "I'm going to cheer so loud that they'll hear me
in Houston", said Dorothy! Top Right (left-to-right): Carolyn
Harbaugh, Bessie Kastl (Back), Beula Pohto, Jane Byrnes,
Desiree Rogers (Back), and Dorothy Erickson were just some
of the ladies to gather for the Watermark University "Tea
Tasting" class! This lesson was about white tea! Yummy!
Out and About
AMC Theatre Matinee Outing:
"Hail Caesar!"
w/George Clooney & Josh Brolin
Directed by: The Coen Bros.
12:00 pm
In 1950s Hollywood, Eddie Mannix (Brolin) is Capital
Pictures' head of physical production and, most
importantly, the studio fixer! His job is to maintain the
clean reputation of the company and its stars, keeping
them free from controversy. Mannix is advised that
studio star Baird Whitlock (Clooney) has disappeared
after not showing up for work on the current
production of "Hail Caesar." He initially believes
Whitlock has been drinking, but receives a call from a
group of communists who claim to have kidnapped
him and want a ransom. As Mannix gathers the cash,
he simultaneously deals with an unhappy director who
is working on another project, while innocent young
starlet DeeAnna Moran (Johansson) is pregnant and
unmarried. Mannix must handle all of this while
keeping the gossip columnists off the scent. When
Mannix is approached by an aviation company with an
offer of a less-hectic, and rather lucrative job, he must
ultimately determine how to best use his skills. We'll
see you in the movies!
Bottom Left: Resident Pat Westman and a group of ladies were shaking their groove-thing at the Zumba Gold
class every Saturday with volunteer Julie Clark! If you like dancing, music, and exercise then join the Zumba
Gold group each Saturday at 10:00 am. Bottom Right (left-to-right): Richard Backhus (Back), Joyce Armstrong,
Marsha Leizer, and Jane Byrnes rooting on the Chiefs. Their hoping the Chiefs get back to the Super Bowl for a
50 year anniversary game...maybe a rematch of Super Bowl 1 (Kansas City Chiefs vs. Green Bay Packers)...we'll
have to see!
