Off To See The Wizard...
July 2016
We're off to see the Wizard...the wonderful
Wizard of OZ!
OZ Museum Day Trip: Wamego, KS
Saturday July 30th at 8:00 am
Watermark University
Full steam ahead! Our Watermark University semester
is chugging along with an abundance of offerings for all
interest levels. With this being said, it's never too early to
start thinking about next semester's wonderful teaching
opportunities to share with fellow Residents, Associates,
and guests!
Teaching is a very rewarding opportunity for you to
showcase your passions and interests with others seeking
to learn a new hobby, talent, or craft. If you are interested
in teaching a Watermark University class for the fall 2016
semester come see Jason Barrett or Karol Swain in the
Community Life Office to get signed up today! The
possibilities for learning is endless with the assortment of
talents at our community. So, don't limit your talents to
just yourself, step out, and share your wonderful gifts with
others! Come learn and grow with us this coming semester!
If you are interested in teaching for this fall come see
us by the end of this month to get started with a new
teaching opportunity! Get involved with Watermark U.!

"Toto...I don't think we are in Kansas anymore", said
Dorothy, but in fact we will be...Wamego, Kansas
that is! Join us for a fun-filled day to see the OZ
Museum which is entirely dedicated to all things OZ
related. This wonderfully imaginative museum
covers all of the creativeness from paperback to
silver screen adaptations of L. Frank Baum's beloved
children's books. Most notably are the MGM movie
props that are sure to reinvigorate the childhood
whimsy of any adult. Don't miss out on this
opportunity to see OZ come to life through the
artifacts of cinema history and the cultural
phenomenon that would change the course for how
movies would be made!
Admission for this museum is $6.00 per person
which will include all exhibits and artifacts in the
museum. Prior to our trip to Wamego, Kansas we
will be stopping for breakfast at Cracker Barrel and
then hopping on to I-70 for a 1 hour 58 minutes
drive to OZ! After visiting the museum we will stop
for an afternoon lunch at Spangles Restaurant in
Topeka, Kansas. Make your plans to spend the day
with us on Saturday July 30th for a trip that you
won't want to miss! All you will have to do
is..."follow the yellow brick road!" Come out and play
with us!

Path to Well-Being
Thriving
Often this section is dedicated to
the wonderful stories of our many
outstanding Residents that are
making great strides in the area of
thriving. However, it not just limited
to Residents, but we also like to use
this area to talk about some of our
Associates that are creating great
opportunities to thrive with
Residents as well in other personal
aspects of their lives! This month
we would like to highlight Associate Valerie Quick! She provides
excellent services to the Residents in the dining room as a server
and loves her opportunities to build impactful relationships with
the wonderful people that she serves on a daily basis. In addition,
she has been exploring opportunities to thrive in activities with the
Residents, and nothing was more evident than last month's fishing
outing where she was able to share her love of fishing with the
Residents, as was them with her. Valerie and her son Tyler joined
the Residents for a day out on the lake taking in some sun and
breeze while catching some feisty little blue gills! The Fellowship
was definitely the most rewarding part of the day, I'm sure that
Valerie would agree, it wasn't really about how many fish you
could catch (which that was fun too), but more importantly the
time that you were spending and the people that you were
spending it with. As part of our Watermark culture we thoroughly
embrace opportunities for Associates and Residents to connect
with thriving moments like this. Thank you Valerie for spending the
day with us and thriving with others!
Join the Victoria Carpenter of Interim
Healthcare with the wonderful staff of
nurses for a informative presentation on
Arthritis Awareness. This presentation
will discuss a variety of health related
topics pertaining to arthritis and arthritis
management. We will be holding this
presentation in our theatre on July 19th
at 2:30 pm for all interested attendees. If
you are currently managing your arthritis
or you know someone that is going
through some obstacle because of
arthritis, then take this opportunity to
learn some useful information that will
be great for kick-starting a conversation
with your medical professional. Join us!
RED HATTER
LUNCHEON:
(Women's Social Club and Lunch Outing)
Join the Red Hatter's for their monthly meeting and luncheon. The
Greenbriar Red Hatters is looking for some interested women that are

organization is a great way to meet other women in our community as well
as share in on the fellowship and fun. It is really easy to become a member
of the Greenbriar chapter of the Red Hat Society. All you have to do is come
to the monthly luncheon and your attendance will assure your membership.
The monthly dues are $1 a month or you can pay $12 for the whole year.
The membership dues go to pay for a large banquet in the fall. If you are
interested in becoming a Red Hatter, then join the gals on July 21st at

You are invited to attend the Eastern Jackson County
division of LINC meeting. LINC is a non-profit
organization that works with the state and local
government, businesses, community, and civic leaders
to improve the lives of local area children and their
families. LINC will be holding their monthly meeting
at Greenbriar, which is an open town hall style
meeting were people are encouraged to bring new
ideas and opportunities to help improve the lives of
children and families living in Eastern Jackson County.
Brianna Powers, community liaison for LINC at Little
Blue Elementary, will be conducting the meeting this
month. This is a great opportunity to get involved in
your local community outreach and bring some new
fresh ideas to the table. Please join the conversation!
Red/White/Blue Dance
(Friday July 8th at 2:00pm)
Join us for a dance on Friday July 8th from 2:00 pm
until 4:00pm in the Multi-Purpose Room with a
red/white/blue theme for Independence Day. We will
be having a variety of refreshments for all to enjoy.
Come and listen to a variety of pop music and some
old patriotic classics and make sure to grab a guy or
gal and shake a tail feather on the dance floor. We
hope that you will join in on the fun and celebrate with
your Greenbriar friends to the sounds of good music
and great fellowship. Strap on those boogie shoes and
strut your stuff on the dance floor with us! We'll see
you at the party!
Featured Picture: Resident Marsha Leizer is clowning around
for a good cause on Red Nose Day, which is a fundraiser for
children in the United States living in poverty. Greenbriar
Residents participated in sporting their Red Noses for a day
and we were able to raise a little over a $100.00 for the
cause.
Top Left: Tyler Quick (son of Valerie Quick) enjoyed his day
fishing with the Residents. He roped in a few Blue Gill over
the course of the day. Nice job Tyler! Top Right: (Left-toRight) Dorothy Frederick, Yoko Rowland, Paul Rowland, June
Higgins, Amy Umsted, and Chuck Couch enjoyed their day at
the Kansas City Zoo with the amazing animals!
Out and About
AMC Theatre Outing:
"The Legend of Tarzan"
Starring: Alexander Skarsgård
Friday July 1st at 12:30 pm
Join us for an AMC 20 Theatre outing to see the
new cinematic adaptation of the Tarzan series, "The
Legend of Tarzan". In this most recent interpretation of
the classic story of man and nature, and their
ability/inability to exist in harmony, will unfold to the
surprise of many "civilized" people amidst the colonial
Imperialism of 19th century Africa. As the story goes, it
has been years since the man once known as Tarzan
(Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind
for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke,
with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side.
Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve
as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a
pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge,
masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom
(Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot
have no idea what they are about to unleash. Come
with us for an epic adventure of love, nature, and
triumph over greed. This movie will bring out the call
of the wild in all of us...ahh...ahh...ahh!
Bottom Left: Residents June Higgins and Dorothy Frederick enjoy a ride on the Sky Safari ride at the zoo. This
half mile 60ft high ride spans the African section of the zoo and allows you to see all of the majesty of the
roaming gazelles, giraffes, ostriches, water buffalo, wild birds, hypos, and many other awing creatures. Bottom
Right: (Left-to-Right) Marsha Leizer, Dorothy Frederick, and Yoko Rowland attended the joy ride outing where
we stopped to feed the elk.
