FRESH IDEAS MAKE WAVES
xxxx
AN UNUSUAL LARGE NUMBER of this year’s Norwegian films are made
by first-time female directors, and the stories they tell are fresh and original.
Norway opened its national film school in 1997, and the school has since
delivered scriptwriters, producers and directors to the thriving Norwegian
film industry. From 2015 the school will open up a new Masters program,
which will give filmmakers the opportunity to further develop their personal voices.
WHILE ON THE SUBJECT OF WAR, two of Norway’s most experienced
directors will each have a go at Norwegian kings. In The Last King, Oscar
nominee Nils Gaup (Pathfinder, The Kautokeino Rebellion) takes us back
800 years to the last time all Norwegian men had beards and went skiing.
In The King`s Choice Erik Poppe (A Thousand Times Good Night) depicts
the fateful days in April 1940, when Germany invaded Norway and the
King was forced to make a crucial decision.
NEWCOMERS SUCH AS Aasne Vaa Greibrokk and her drama All the Beauty,
Kjersti Steinsbø’s drama-thriller Doll in the Ceiling, Charlotte Blom’s comedy
Staying Alive and Yngvild Sve Flikke’s drama-comedy Women In Oversized
Men’s Shirts, will show the world that exciting things are happening among
the new generation of Norwegian filmmakers.
THERE IS ALSO STRONG anticipation for what is regarded as the first
Norwegian disaster movie; The Wave, by experienced genre film director
Roar Uthaug (Cold Prey, Escape). The film depicts a massive rockslide in
the beautiful Geiranger fjord triggering a tsunami with a 85-metre wave
destroying everything on its way.

FOLLOWING
HER SUNDANCE WINNER of the world cinema grand jury
prize Happy, Happy, Anne Sewitsky is returning to Sundance with a drama, Homesick, about how sibling love can manifest itself when the adult
siblings have just met. And following the two successful films Reprise
and Oslo, August 31st, Joachim Trier has become an established name
on the international film scene and there are great expectations for his
new film Louder than Bombs, starring Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert
and Jesse Eisenberg in the leads. In this family drama we meet Gene and
his two sons trying to cope with the death of their wife and mother, the
war photographer Laura.
THE CHRISTMAS OF SOLAN & LUDVIG and Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder
were among the most popular Norwegian family films in recent years.
Now both children and adults are looking forward to the sequels, Solan
& Ludvig – The Big Cheese Race and Doctor Proctor: Bubble in the Bathtub,
again directed by Rasmus A. Sivertsen and Arild Fröhlich, respectively.
We look forward to sharing these films with you.

Beatles is the ultimate coming-of-age story. Four teenage boys are growing up in Oslo at the
time when Beatlemania hits Norway. Kim, Gunnar, Ola and Seb each take on one of the Fab
Four’s names, and they plan to start their own outfit, The Snafus. Like many teenage dreams,
this one never comes to fruition, but the need to save up for instruments becomes the drive
behind much of what they do as they blunder through their formative years, struggling with
archaic textbooks and ancient teachers, discovering girls, being beaten up by rival gangs,
experimenting with alcohol and finding their footing as activists.
PETER FLINTH graduated from the Danish Film School together
with fellow director students Per Fly, Thomas Vinterberg,
Ole Christian Madsen and Maria Sødahl. Director of short
films, feature films, TV movies and commercials. First feature was the medieval action adventure Eye of the Eagle
starring Norwegian actor Bjorn Floberg. Followed by the
family adventures The Olsen Gang Jr. and The Fakir. Changed
genre for the next movies, thrillers Wallander and Bengtzon
in Sweden – and the two-picture epic based on Jan Guillou’s
best-selling novels about the medieval Knight Templar Arn.
Beatles is Peter Flinth’s first movie in Norway.

In mid-winter the German illusionist Dirk Ohm arrives in the small town of Grong, a place ridden
by the disappearance of a young local woman – Maria. Dirk soon finds himself searching for
Maria side by side with the villagers; and slowly he falls in love with the missing woman. In the
loneliness of his hotel room he gives in to the illusion of their love relationship, she is to him
more real than anything else. The story is inspired by a true event – the disappearance of the
German illusionist Dirk Ohm in Grong in 2003. The Disappearing Illusionist is told in a magical
and poetic landscape. It challenges our perception of what’s real and what’s not, who we are
when we are present and who are we when we are gone.

The lovesick Doctor Proctor has traveled back in time in a desperate attempt to alter history.
He wants to stop the wedding between his beloved Juliette and the terrible Claude Cliché,
but is trapped in time. Lisa and Nilly, Proctor’s young partners and neighbors, have to step up
again, and they take the Time Bathtub back in time to try to help him. It turns into a riotous
journey through time where they encounter Napoleon, narrowly escape the guillotine during

The world described in this tale is not at all like our world. The dungeons are gloomier, the rich
and their sons meaner, the parents much more self-centered, the crazy inventors’ inventions
crazier. And the beast that lives in the sewer system, brooding on revenge, could easily be a
giant anaconda. In this world, the friendship between two lonely children is perhaps even more
important than it is in our world. Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder is the story about two lonely
(and a bit weird) children, finding friendship, by helping Doctor Proctor to get his recognition.

of the Tromsø Island. It puzzles the police and the investigator Aslak Eira, of Sami heritage,
that she has not drowned. To enhance the confusion, the body carries traces of having been

Three years after his wife, acclaimed photographer Isabelle Freed, dies in a car crash, Gene
keeps everyday life going with his shy teenage son Conrad. A planned exhibition of Isabelle’s
photographs prompts Gene’s older son, Jonah, to return to the house he grew up in – and
for the first time in a very long time, the father and the two brothers are living under the
same roof. Underneath the affection and friction that is a part of restored family life between
these three, we feel the striking loss that marks each of them. At the same time, the three
have completely different memories of the exceptional woman who influenced their lives so
profoundly. Did any of them really know her? The film observes this family as they find ways
to live together. Grief, mixed with surprising humor, informs all that happens – as an unsettling
secret is finally acknowledged by each of them.

observations about himself and the people around him. With thoughts and fantasies ranging
from the trivial and infantile to the existential and profound. Out of Nature is an honest and
funny portrait of a young man wanting to break the mould.

An old sanatorium is deteriorating in an isolated forest in the mountains. The elderly janitor is still
living there to ensure that no one accesses the dangerous building. Five contract workers have
taken on the task of tracking the huge building for hazardous waste before it is demolished.
Over 300 rooms and kilometers of pipelines have to be screened in three days. They realize
that the job is more than a search for asbestos and mercury when they encounter the building’s
frightening past. Water is gushing from the old pipes, and brings the work to a halt. An attempt
to close the water leakage leads them to the dark cellar, where they discover the horrible
secrets from the sanatorium’s past. You can demolish a building, but never remove the past.

Three women stumble blindly in an almost desperate search for themselves and happiness.
The somewhat uptight literature student Sigrid falls head over heels in love with the famous
writer Kåre Tryvle. It’s a soul-setting meeting where they find themselves more than they find
one another. Trine is an uninhibited performance artist in the midst of her big break; that’s
why it’s highly inconvenient that she’s heavily pregnant to an absent curator. Luckily, Trine
meets the stout timber worker Agnes, who thinks she’s about to die and wants to contact the
son she once gave up for adoption.

The idyllic life on Fergie’s farm is brought to a sudden halt when the price
of potatoes is slashed in half! The only spare grounds on the farm are in
a very shady part of the valley where nothing ever grows. The sun’s rays
can’t reach that part. George is afraid that he might have to sell the farm,

construct the world’s largest mirror and mount it high on the valley side.
The mirror will catch the sun rays and reflect them down into the dark valley.
One day while lumbering in the forest, a huge tree crashes down on Fergie, damaging him severely. His magical spark plug – his heart – beats

a story about money and power: about the ones that have a lot and the
ones that have quite a bit less.

An emotionally gripping and fascinating story in the tradition of The
Elephant Man (1980) and Mask (1985). A century ago, a girl was born with
fur. It would greatly affect her life and the small community she grew up
in. Based on an international bestseller by Erik Fosnes Hansen.
A flame lights up the darkness of a peaceful village. A pyromaniac ignites
his first fire. More fires break out and the community panics. An inferno
lurks under the surface as a local policeman uncovers the unthinkable
truth, the pyromaniac isn´t a stranger – he´s a village fireman.

When night falls on Algiers ‘la Blanche’, the city
walls turn to grey ... grey as sadness, loneliness,
vice, fear and insomnia, as the dull eyes of men
and women of the night in Algiers that Lilia the
photographer, captures for her exhibition: Algiers
by night. This is a night-time urban drama, using
the documentary process, to tell about these
people.
The Dutch geologist Alfred has given himself the
task of proving the hypothesis that the peculiar
round holes that can be found in the North of
Norway are actually the result of meteorites. But
rock he’s searching for will not be found by him,
In Beyond Sleep, Alfred will have to reach the end
of the world to finally find himself.
Black Sunshine is a story about an African hairdresser and her albino daughter. The main focus
is the emotionally complex relationship between
a mother and her daughter. The mother feels
ashamed of her own albino daughter, and ironically,
her own blackness. The script is poetic, humorous
and brutal at the same time. It is also a document
of everyday life in Ghana.

A Swedish family travels to the French Alps to
enjoy a few days of skiing. The sun is shining and
the slopes are spectacular but during a lunch at
a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche turns
everything upside down. With diners fleeing in
all directions, mother Ebba calls for her husband
Tomas as she tries to protect their children. Meanwhile, Tomas is running for his life… The anticipated disaster failed to occur, and yet the family’s
world has been shaken to its core, a question mark
hanging over their father in particular. Tomas and
Ebba’s marriage now hangs in the balance as Tomas
struggles desperately to reclaim his role as family
patriarch.
Gentlemen, the story of the charismatic Morgan
brothers, is half love-story, half international
thriller depicted in the post-war zeitgeist of jazz,
poetry, love and espionage.
Kay Pollak has reunited some of the key actors
from the 2004 megahit As it is in Heaven. He goes
back to the story of the choir of a small Swedish
village and to soprano singer Lena, expecting the
child of the choir conductor who passed away in
the original film.

Hedi Schneider is Stuck tells a story about how
life can slip out of control. Uli, Hedi and Finn are a
happy, loving family. They get by with various odd
jobs, and Hedi particularly uses humour to deal
with every unpleasant setback. Even when she
gets stuck in the elevator, she seems to manage
just fine. But the moment she begins to suffer
from panic attacks, the everyday life of the family
suddenly gets out of control and everything that
seemed to be certain is not anymore. Nothing will
stay the same, and even when Hedi manages to
overcome the crisis, both Hedi and Uli are aware
that they have become other persons than before.
Coyo is 15. He lives in a suburb of Mexico City set
on bringing the American dream to Mexican soil.
He meets Ruco, the son of a prominent politician,
and leader of the kids in the neighborhood. Freedom, boredom, adrenaline and excess drive Coyo
and Ruco into a journey of blood, tears, love and
hate, to discover the secret dividing winners and
losers in life.
A semi-autobiographical drama encompassing
compassion, heartache and humour in everyday
life in Ethiopia. The film’s main character is a young
boy who is suddenly left to face the loss of his
home and family, in a country strongly affected by
climate change. While the film is narrated from the
perspective of a child, the theme and tone are still
complex and balanced, at the same time retaining
its tenderness and innocence.

soldiers. Love in Khon Kaen is the next feature film
from Palme d’Or winning filmmaker Apichatpong
Weerasethakul.
A Man Named Ove is the story of a widower in his
60’s who loses his job and decides to take his own
life. He is a wet blanket and a pedant who annoys
everyone he meets. But some of the people he

After the terrible January 2010 earthquake in
Port-au-Prince, an intellectual bourgeois couple
struggles to reinvent a life amid the rubbles of
their luxurious home. Needing money to survive,
the couple decides to rent the remaining habitable part of the villa to Alex, a high-level foreign
relief worker. He brings with him in the house
Andrémise, an ambitious 17-year-old Haitian girl
of modest background. Now the couple, strained

The Shamer’s Daughter is based on the first book
in the Shamer Chronicles. In a semi-realistic medieval fantasy world with Dragons and Witchcraft,
Dina and her family are thrown into the adventure
of a lifetime in order to put the rightful heir to the
Kingdom of Dunark on the throne.
Estelle returns to Stockholm. She brings her
daughter with her, and the promise that Tommy
is coming home. A year earlier they had fled head
over heels after one of the biggest robberies in
Swedish history. Estelle starts to pressure Tommy’s
old cronies for the loot, and when things don’t go
her way she takes a dangerous gamble. Tommy is
the story of the woman behind the man behind
the headlines. About two sisters, two mothers,
three daughters and their men.
The year is 1720. The war is over, and vice admiral Tordenskiold doesn’t know what to do with
his life. Should he get married and settle down?
His valet Kold persuades him to go on a courting
expedition. The journey turns into a wild road
movie through Denmark and Germany. Wherever
they go, Tordenskiold has to relate his favourite
story: the battle of Dynekilen. The women sigh,
and Tordenskiold seduces them all, one by one.
He is the rock star of his time, but the problems
are piling up.

INSTITUTIONS
NORWEGIAN FILM INSTITUTIONS
Norwegian Film Institute
Film & Kino
The Norwegian Film Institute operates under the authority of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and is the Norwegian government’s administrative
body for the film sector and advisor on film policy issues. The Board of the
Film Institute is appointed by the Ministry. The CEO is Mr Sindre Guldvog.
Film & Kino is a combination of a member organisation for Norwegian
municipalities and an industry organisation for the cinema and video industries. The organisation, which was established in 1917, administers the
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation and also runs the Mobile Cinema.
The Norwegian Film Institute represents and promotes Norwegian feature
films, shorts, documentaries, games and TV-series at festivals and film
cultural events nationally and abroad, and provides statistics and facts about
Norwegian films and theatrical releases. The Norwegian Film Institute facilitates and promote Norway as an attractive location for foreign producers.
Around the world, cinemas are usually owned by private companies. In
Norway, however, most cinemas are owned by the municipalities. As a
member organization for the municipalities, Film & Kino is looking after
their interests concerning film, the running of cinemas and video activities.
Membership is open to all municipalities. The organization is governed by
a national convention with delegates from both the municipalities and the
cinema and video industries. As of 2013 the privately owned cinemas are
emerging, and they hold almost 60 per cent of the marked share. Due
to this development, Film & Kino will experience changes in the owner
structure in the coming years.
Public funding in 2015 for audiovisual development, production and marketing is approx. € 50 million. The Film Institute also offers grants, training
and talent development for the film industry.
The Norwegian Film Institute is located in the Film House in Oslo, and
is in charge of the Film Museum and the Cinemateque of Oslo. Through
our work, we provide knowledge and understanding of the Norwegian
film heritage.
The Norwegian Film Institute represents Norway at the Council of Europe’s
fund for co-production of film, Eurimages, as well as at the European
Audiovisual Observatory. The Institute participates in a number of international co-operative efforts for the audiovisual sector, including the
International Council for Educational Media, the European Film Academy,
European Film Promotion, Filmkontakt Nord and Scandinavian Films. Together with the National Library, the Norwegian Film insitute is a member
of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).
Read more about Norwegian films at www.norwegianfilms.no and the
Norwegian Film database.
Helps ensure public access to new and relevant films
Film & Kino’s mission is to ensure the public of the entire country access
to new and relevant films, either through regular theatrical releases, at
festivals or through DVD. The organisation shall further both the big movie
theatre experience and a purposeful use of the DVD format, as well as
being a guarantor of quality and diversity.
Film & Kino administers a number of support initiatives for films. About
30 per cent of the films in regular theatrical release in Norway receive
support from these initiatives.
In 2011 all Norwegian movie theatres became digital. During the next few
years, the following up of the digitalising of Norwegian movie theatres will
be one of the most important tasks for the organisation.
71
NORWEGIAN FILM INSTITUTIONS
Film & Kino’s fields of operations are:
• Following up the digitalisation of Norwegian movie theatres
• Support the import and distribution of films
•Main executive responsibility for the government’s film culture and
educational programmes for children and youth
• Administrating and partially financing Norwegian film festivals
• Developing the cinema and video industries
• Give advice and develop know-how
• Information and contact point for the public
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation
Film & Kino administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation,
which was established in 1970. Norwegian law instructs this foundation
to charge a certain percentage of cinema ticket sales as well as a levy on
video sales and rentals. Film & Kino’s activities for the cinema and video
industries are then financed by this foundation.
The Mobile Cinema
The Mobile Cinema is Film & Kino’s arrangement for the screening of films
in locations without a regular movie theatre. The Mobile Cinema brings
all necessary equipment and can screen films on all kinds of premises all
over the country.
Regional film funds and film centres
By the end of 2011 all districts in Norway, apart from Oslo, the capital, have
‘film centres’, ‘film funds’ and/or ‘film commissions’. They all have regional
as well as governmental support. The national goals are to stimulate
strengthened production infrastructure, professionality and continuity in
all parts of the production – and increased talent development.
72
There are eight film centres, six regional film funds and three regional film
commissions, of whom some are co-located regionally. In addition there
is a national film commission.
International Sami Film Institute serves the Sami population all over Norway
as well as those living in Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The Film Centres are based on cultural grounds. Their main mission is to
support development and production of short films and documentaries,
and to raise competence among professionals and spot, cultivate and
support young talents.
The Film Funds can support audiovisual productions of all genres and
formats, including international co-productions and video games. They are
not allowed (by the government) to contribute financially to the production of feature films for cinema that are supported by the Norwegian Film
Institute. Governmental support requires regional contribution with at least
the same amount of money to the fund. Furthermore the governmental
support cannot be spent on managing the organisation.
The Film Commissions are based on trade grounds, and offer facilitation
for foreign productions in their region. The Regional Film Commissions
collaborate with the national film commission – Film Commission Norway
(FCN)– who is an integral part of Norwegian Film Institute. FCN generate
to encourage and facilitate international film productions all over Norway,
and acts as a link between the national and the international film and
television industry.
