During this conference, National brings all of the chapter’s presidents together to learn, share and report back to the membership on the progress and efforts that National is developing for our association. This is just one of the great benefits of becoming involved at the leadership level that I have enjoyed being a part of. At this forum, we were introduced to our new Executive Vice President/CEO, Randy Fiser. What a pleasure it was to meet him and gain insight into his experience and leadership for ASID. I think he had been on the job for literally two days, but I genuinely liked him and found him very approachable. We also had a great session with our National President, Lisa B. Henry, FASID. Lisa spoke of the collaboration of IDCEC, IIDA and ASID on the issue of declining interest in sitting for the NCIDQ exam and the possibility of developing a joint study program for the NCIDQ to replace the STEP program. Our National President-Elect, Barbara Marini, FASID, led the visioning session with an unveiling of the Strategic Plan for the next three years. One of the biggest revelations was the reveal of our “why” statement: THE ASID WHY STATEMENT: ASID ADVANCES THE PROFESSION AND COMMUNICATES THE IMPACT OF INTERIOR DESIGN TO ENHANCE THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE. This statement can best be explained by viewing the following YouTube link www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2SEPoQEgqA Delivered by Simon Sinek, the video “Start With Why” is a very informative and worthwhile video, I would highly recommend all of our members take the time to view. I know you will be inspired and also gain insight into the direction that National is taking the Strategic Plan. It was a two-day event that also included discussions on the availability and importance of liability insurance for our members. I encourage everyone to please see the National website www.asid.org for further details. We also were coached on contract negotiations, what a great skill to develop! One of the best take away from this event was the friendship I formed with other Presidents that will always keep us connected! Thank you for letting me be a part of ASID! President Rick Campos, Allied ASID President-Elect Deirdre Eagles, Allied ASID Financial Director Tamra Mundia, Allied ASID Communications Director Monica Olson, Allied ASID Professional Development Director Gigi Harris, Allied ASID Membership Director Audrey Duncan, Allied ASID Dear Members, I’m excited and honored to be among the team of dedicated industry professionals who will lead the membership in the upcoming 2012-2013 fiscal year. Together, we have developed some terrific new programs and events which will both engage and benefit all who participate. In the coming year, you will notice a couple of re-occurring themes or philosophies which I find invaluable and the foundation for my leadership role. The first one is “team work”. As a member of this amazing professional organization, we are all part of a greater team of leaders, innovators, and tastemakers. As individuals, we are each impressive, but together as a team, we are in a word, unstoppable. The success of a team relies on the participation of all. Membership is a two way street and as leaders we will work tirelessly to bring opportunity to the table in the form of networking, business building, and continuing education. What’s more exciting is what you as members bring to the table. You possess talent, proven skill, and professionalism - all of the characteristics of an industry leader. Let’s work together to further build and grow our chapter to it fullest potential. I look forward to being a part of your team! Board Member at Large Marjan Bastani, Industry Partner Cheers. The meeting started on the first level of the showroom, in the main gallery with a wine bar. The knowledgeable and friendly staff at Rohl introduced all their new products to designers and other attendees. After about 45 minutes of viewing products, drinking wine and networking, the attendees were invited to go upstairs for a nice dinner. After the dinner and some announcements made by the chapter president, Char Cowan, and a few other ASID members, it was time for a CEU on “everything you need to know about sinks”. Lou Rohl, the CEO at Rohl, Skip Johnson, the VP, and Jake Smith, the technical director, made the CEU fun by randomly asking questions and giving out Starbucks gift cards for the right answers! The meeting ended by Rohl raffling fabulous prizes, including a Perrin & Rowe kitchen filtration faucet kit and some beautiful shower-heads. When leaving the event, each attendee was handed a fun gift bag at the door. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the management and great staff at Rohl for their effort in making a warm and amazing event on that cold rainy evening! Also, a big fat chunky “thank you” to Kerry Anderson from AudioVisions for all his AV efforts, and last but not least, to my amazing co-chair Michele Prata for her hard work putting the events together! California Designers Unite People are talking about AB 2482, new legislation sponsored by the Interior Design Coalition of California and authored by Assemblymember Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco). • Enable registered interior designers to participate in federal projects Unfortunately, some of what you may be hearing just isn’t true. • Improve reciprocity with other regulated states Make sure you have the facts on AB 2482! • Expand opportunities for California Community College students, allowing these institutions to tailor course offerings to design students’ needs Fact: AB 2482 allows for anyone to legally continue practicing interior design as they are now. Fact: AB 2482 allows existing, private, Certified Interior Designer (CID) program to continue as it does now. AB 2482 is needed because state law has not kept up-to-date with the evolution of the interior design profession. AB 2482 is needed to: • Create voluntary pathways to licensure so interior designers qualified by 8 | SUMMER 2012 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER education, experience and examination can practice to their full abilities. • Provide a path to registration for graduates of interior design degree programs and current CIDs seeking expanded practice opportunities • Require Registered Interior Designer stamps to be recognized by building officials Learn more by visiting the IDCC Fact Sheet on the website www.idc-ca.org on the Resource page. INDUSTRY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT Outdoor Elegance By Barbara Keller, ASID Living in California, we spend plenty of time outdoors and view our outside areas as additional rooms for relaxation and entertainment. As you’re designing your clients’ interiors, take a look at those outside spaces. What is on the other side of those windows or walls is really part of your interior design and another opportunity to design rooms—outdoor rooms. When designing outdoor rooms, the same principles and elements of design such as color, pattern, and texture, are considered. However, Mother Nature greatly influences outdoor design also. So, if you’re ready to design outdoor rooms, those who are in the outdoor business (including furniture, fountains, outdoor kitchens, umbrellas, lighting, and fireplaces) recommend that we also consider the following: • Where is the sun throughout the day? • What kind of base should be used and how heavy should the umbrella base be so the umbrella doesn’t blow away when those Santa Ana winds occur? • What kinds of zones should be present in an outdoor kitchen? If there’s a bar, is the counter deep enough to hold a decent sized plate? Are the cabinets airtight so dry goods such as flour and rice can be stored in the kitchen? Where should the grill be located? • What would your clients love to inspire their senses—such as sounds from a fountain, a fireplace to gather around in the evening, art such as statues, lighting, and beautiful containers? • Will you want an area rug in your outdoor room? • What type of cushions should be under that beautiful outdoor fabric so they don’t hold water? Outdoor Elegance can help you make the best design decisions for your outdoor room design projects. We carry and represent the top Casual Living manufacturers and are the number one Casual Living supplier to the trade in Southern California, and we protect all Trade sales. We also offer a great “To the Trade” discount program and a “To the Trade” Incentive program. WHO’S WHERE? We have a great selection of outdoor furniture styles and fabrics; we have outdoor kitchen appliances and cabinetry, fountains and statuary, umbrellas, and much more. So everything that you need for your design is at one place, and if you need items quickly, we stock many pieces. We have an outdoor design expert who will help you with your design, and we have a great space for you to work with your clients when visiting our showroom. Plus, our experienced technicians will set up your furniture, make sure it all sits properly, and will even remove your clients’ old furniture. We offer complimentary delivery within a 40 mile radius and provide a cleaning and protection maintenance program (for cushions and frames). We also handle all warranty issues for you. Outdoor Living By Laura Yorba, Allied ASID 2012 ASID OC Newsletter Editor Outdoor Lighting Colorful Accessories Lighting is a basic necessity for any outdoor space. It provides safety and security and will let you enjoy your patio all night long. This is a relatively easy upgrade and a simple way to increase your home’s resale value – people like good, basic lighting outside. Incorporating rugs, outdoor pillows, candles and other accessories in vivid colors or fun patterns can really make your outdoor space come alive. Pick three to four colors for your scheme and stick with those colors throughout your design choices. Some of the season's top hues include rich reds, vivid blues, soothing neutrals and garden-inspired greens. Metal accents are popular as well, so look for decor with gold or silver detailing for a design that's modern with a tropical flare. Fire Pits and Fireplaces Continuing their rise that started a few years ago, outdoor fire pits and fireplaces are still all the rage throughout 2012. Whether you just like relaxing by a fire to de-stress or need something to replace the old patio table, a fire pit/fireplace can get the job done. As a bonus, most can be fitted with a grill for cooking, making them a fun and functional accessory. Decorative Water Elements A natural progression of the ever-present outdoor fountain, decorative water elements like waterfalls, ornamental pools, and bubblers are the way to go this year. The water feature has always been popular outdoors, helping to create a calm environment and encouraging relaxation. The outdoor space should incorporate the beauty of nature and enhance it with comfort for living. Custom Closet Furnishings Here are some fun tools and tips: Try adding a Spright laser projector! It appears to be a traditional landscape light but, projects a huge field of “fireflies” into the trees and surrounding landscape. It is new to the market and was a huge success on the tour. I attached the projector to the base of an umbrella and it made for an instant party atmosphere!! The earth comes in the form of landscape and potted plants, in varied sizes and species, to compliment the design. Add a water feature, small or large, and it will sound amazing and also calm the soul. Add the Fire element with an Ecosmart fire system custom built in the form of a concrete table/fire-pit as I used in this space, or fit it right into a concrete wall for an instant glow. The Eco-smart systems are fueled by clean burning bioethanol made by fermenting sugar and starch components of plant by products. This does not emit fumes into the air and can burn safely in an enclosed space. You will truly relish the atmosphere a flickering fire provides on a chilly evening. Outdoor furniture, fabrics, and area rugs are a must for any space and with the new outdoor fabric choices, along with amazing manufacturer warrantees, the possibilities are endless! The outdoor acrylic fabrics are solution dyed, meaning the color is put into the fiber in a liquid state and it is extremely effective against moisture and fading. We can literally design an entirely unique and custom outdoor area rug with the confidence that it will withstand the test of time. Additional ideas would include: outdoor plaster walls in the form of decomposed rock, marble or granite – the finish is only limited to your imagination; custom art on metal that can withstand the elements; and exterior solar shades to line the gazebo when the sun blazes. To complete any space make sure you have landscape and ambient lighting as well as a music source and outdoor accessories. I believe it is vitally important to overall pleasure and happiness to expand living to outdoor spaces. Happy Creating! CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER | SUMMER 2012 | 21 March General Meeting By Nazgol Seyedi 2011-2012 ASID OC Programs Co-Chair ASID OC held the March General Meeting on Thursday the 22nd at the beautiful designed ASID Dream Home in Costa Mesa. The Plexi Gallery and ASIC-OC were the cosponsors of the event. The Plexi Gallery provided plenty of wine and a variety of soft beverages, while ASID-OC offered a wide selection of cheese, crackers, cold-cuts, fruit, a to-die-for Chicken Ceasar Salad, and the dessert. The event started by attendees visiting the Dream Home spaces and networking. After dinner, Char Cowan welcomed the guests and acknowledged the great work of Adriel Cogdal, the Dream Home Chair. A few announcements later and receiving a National ASID Awards by IDI students, the speaker of the event, Dr. Simona Mainini started her fun lecture on Feng Shui in Architecture and Interior Design. This was a topic that was new to so many and attracted the attention of most of the attendees. Dr. Simona finished her lecture by 15 minutes of Q & A; and the co-sponsor of the evening, Plexi Gallery, ended the event by giving out some fabulous prizes. The room was filled with over 120 happy attendees. The great vibe of the Dream Home, the good wine, the excellent selection of food, the interesting 22 | SUMMER 2012 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER speaker’s topic, all and all made the event a huge success. What a great evening! The recently renovated and remodeled showroom of Porcelanosa in Anaheim was so pleasant to be at for this event. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable of their products, and each one of them was a great host to the event. After a few ASID announcements by Char Cowan, our ASID-OC Chapter President, Pamela Kartchner of Porcelanosa explained about their vignette design contest. The winning vignette will be installed and shown at the showroom with a plaque of recognition and the winner will win a trip to Spain! How exciting! The speaker of the night was the President Elect of ASID- Los Angeles, Katherine Fern. She spoke on the hot yet complicated topic of Legislation, and thanks to her way of explaining the topic it was not as scary as it sounds! Thank you Kat! The evening ended with some exciting Spanish themed raffle prizes and informative goodie bags. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Porcelanosa, especially Pamela Kartchner, Ivy Smart, Paco Montilla, and Jack Handley. Like always, I would also like to mention how much we appreciate all the help given by Kerry Anderson of AudioVision with our AV needs; and finally a big thank you to my Co-Chair Michele Prata! 24 | SUMMER 2012 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER TWO LUXURY BRANDS COMBINING LOCAL EXPERTISE WITH NATIONAL REACH O R AN GE CO U NT Y : INSIDE OOD NEW BL YE AR, E: NEW ER ICE CKINSAL ES CENT KATE BE ZZLE IERA GO GOT DA ON ! Some of our student members will be graduating and ASID extends special congratulations to each graduate for their personal accomplishment, perseverance and commitment to the profession. We know that our students are next in line to be design professionals and that we rely on them to carry the ASID torch forward! Over the past months, student ASID members representing four campuses actively participated in their own campus design events and community services events as well as making a fantastic showing as both volunteers and as designers at the ASID Dream Home in March. Great job students! Spring Market at the LDC followed immediately and the final big student event of the season was the highly creative annual ASID Noah’s ARC Student Design Challenge to benefit the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. This event showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our students and has given them experience with project management and team design. We know what a challenge that can be! Students created amazing and beautiful rooms from repurposed and refurbished items. Way to be Green! As the summer approaches, a greater part of our time and attention is spent in the open air and in our outdoor living environments here in beautiful California. We hope that the long days and balmy weather inspire and rejuvenate all of your design juices and we look forward to seeing students at general meetings and events during the summer “ASID OC welcomes students aboard” months (May/June/July general meetings free to students ). What a whirlwind our Winter quarter was at The Art Institute of California-Orange County and Spring is equally exciting. We can hardly wait for Summer! We began the year with an inspiring visit from our ASID-OC President Char Cowan, Emerging Professionals Chair, Rona Graf and Student Rep Tamara Stratton followed by a Panel of Commercial Design folks from Vendors to Dealers to Design firms that was so informative! We assembled our Dream home team of Julia Bent, Mel Wehrberg, Christian Arante, Thanh Nguyen and Irene Duran and created our Sustainably designed, accessible Gift Shop with virtually no budget. We followed the rule of “recycle, reuse and repurpose” and our ocean inspired room featured shipping pallet “driftwood” inspired wall paneling, beach glass inspired wine bottle and paperback book (what else would you have with you at the beach?) lighting fixtures, a huge fabric wave ceiling and beach inspired rock, stick and succulent plantings. Our “gallery wall” reflected the gradations of the ocean from light to dark green and featured amazing surf photography by Jason Murray from Kona Gallery. We learned so much and had a wonderful time! What an amazing group of ASID Designers we got to work with and know! With the dream home behind us, we’re off and running with the ASID Noah’s ARC Design Challenge. Sandra Ramirez-Bravo, Mel Wehrberg, Sunny Anderson, Beck Craft and Mandy King had all sorts of wonderful ideas and hopefully you all came out to see ALL of the Noah’s ARC spaces and support the Salvation Army! They worked hard to repurpose furniture and accessories into a Thanh Nguyen, Luisa Lam, Jennifer Leigh and Stephanie Sandoval with Sponsor Linda Nabulsi from AllSeating beautiful room that showed what can be done with the great items donated to the Salvation Army. Thanh Nguyen, Laura Duffy, Jennifer Leigh, Stephanie Sandoval and Louisa Lam were also very busy this quarter working on our IIDA Haute Couture Fashion designed for the year 2040. Although they didn’t win the competition, we are really proud of the incredible couture gown they created-they are winners in our eyes! Spring also brought us to Fixtures Living for a program and tour by Paynal Ward, a great guest speaker; Linda Nabulsi from All Seating, and we had a visit from the Chris Christie from USGBC! CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER | SUMMER 2012 | 29 STUDENT CORNER Saddleback College Since the last ASID issue, the two most recent community activities that the students have been involved with is the IIDA Fashion Show to benefit Working Wardrobe and ASID Noah's ARC Design Challenge to benefit Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. We are in the process of filling our board positions with new students, since 80% of the board is graduating. It'll be fun to see who will take over next year. The ASID Noah's ARC Design Challenge grand opening was May 5th at the San Clemente Salvation Army. We had so much fun again this year working with repurposed furniture. In March, we had Doug Stead with CCIDC as our monthly club meeting speaker. He spoke on the importance of proper ethics as a designer. He's always a favorite with his distinguished background and information. In closing, I would like to say that I have had a great time being the student board president and could not have asked for a more fun, creative, and helpful board of awesome designers. Lori, Kaitlin, Kelsey, Pat, Barbara, Keith, Wendy and Carolyn, I love you all. Amanda Thomas, seamtress friend, Virginia Payne, Munaee MonMon, Denise McConnell, Barbara Schierhold At the end of April, we had our last interior design club meeting for the semester and our speaker was Barbara Deckmeyer with High Dollar Designer. The meeting was both informative and fun and ended with an end of the semester pot luck party. We have many students graduating from the design program this semester and want to congratulate them all and wish them the very best in their interior design careers. A big Thank You also to all of our amazing Interior Design Professors who's talent and guidance has been beyond rewarding and professional in all that you have taught us. Best wishes to all. Westwood College Westwood students were excited about participating in the third annual ASID Noah’s ARC Design Challenge. The team was happy and excited to share their experience and knowledge for repurpose and reusing the materials and objects to bring the room together. Also, this year several of our ASID Interior Design students were motivated to be participating in the Christopher Guy BrtiWeek Design Contest, which requires students to design pieces of furniture or decorative accessories following key Christopher Guy design elements. The winner will be offered a one month internship at the Christopher Guy headquarters in Singapore. Go Team. DICHRO DESIGN There were several volunteer students that participated in the Habitat for Humanity Restore construction. These students donated their time to paint, space plan, construct cabinetry, and construct retail stock shelves. Doing this volunteer project provided the students with knowledge of hands-on real world construction, and how to communicate and understand other volunteers. We are off to a great start.
