Volunteers Robert Rosser, Clive Bird, Jim Nalder and Alfred Konradt prepare the stock-judging yards.
This year’s A&P Show has a heritage
theme.
The 119th show, tomorrow at the Takaka
Recreation Park, is expected to attract about
5000 people as usual, say the organisers.
Some features of the iconic community event
will look back on the show’s long history.
Beard-growing competitions and period
costume will vie with traditional events like
sack races, penny-farthing bike rides and
a cow-pat competition to strike a nostalgic
chord with showgoers. Trade stand exhibitors
have been invited to display material relating
to their businesses’ history at the Golden Bay
A&P Show. Some will also dress in period
costume.
The Sturgeon family has been bringing
their entertainment stalls and rides to the
Golden Bay show for 70 years. George

Sturgeon has had a large 1946-vintage merrygo-round restored and it will be available for
children to ride on.
Preparations have been going on for
months, but a 30-strong working bee on
Monday saw stalwart supporters preparing
all the parts of the show site in the timehonoured fashion. One helper, Clive Bird,
said the first pre-show working bee he had
attended was in 1961.
Golden Bay A&P Association President,
Duncan McKenzie, said that the changes
occurring to the Recreation Park as a result
of the shared recreation facility project
meant that next year’s show would look a
bit different.

people in this community should know about
our superb emergency services.
On Sunday 27 December Howard’s
Canadian friend Ken Wengreniuk fell and
badly broke his ankle.
“He was about 40 metres from the house
in Clifton, and he didn’t know what to do,”
says Howard. “So he dragged himself to
the house to get his cellphone and sent me
a text. I was in Auckland but away from
my home. I rang 111 and they activated
the emergency services in the Bay. Then I
rushed home and got the contact numbers
for the Thorpes and the Bairds who I know
live nearby. I rang them both and they went
straight to the accident. The local St John
volunteers were there already. They were
superb. They assessed Ken and called in the
rescue helicopter and it was able to land in
the paddock next door to where Ken was
staying. The helicopter flew him to Nelson
Hospital and he’s still there, a fortnight later.
He asked the doctor what sort of job he had
done of breaking his ankle and she told him
on a scale of one to 10, it was a 10.”
Howard says that, because the injury
was serious, Ken was very fortunate that the
emergency services were so responsive and
effective.
At the time of the accident, Ken was just
beginning a lengthy holiday in the Bay.
“He says he’s going to be back in the Bay
by February to carry on his holiday. I’ll try to
get down to visit him then,” says Howard.
Born in the Takaka Cottage Hospital in
1946, Howard was brought up in Pohara
Valley, or Snake Gully as he calls it, and left
the Bay in 1963. His family had connections
with the cement works at Tarakohe.

news in brief
Building consent fees rise
Tasman District Council (TDC) increased the fees it
charges for building consents, from 5 January, to meet
rising costs associated with processing and checking
consents. The increases depends on the type of consent
being sought. A building consent for a new single-storey
residential dwelling with a floor area between 121sqm
and 250sqm will rise from $3050 to $3294.
TDC environment and planning manager Dennis BushKing said he was aware the fee increase would affect the
overall cost of building in Tasman District.
“No-one likes to pay more and we can understand that.
But the reality is that at the moment we are not charging
enough to cover our costs. If we don’t increase fees to meet
the shortfall, the general ratepayer will end up subsidising
those who are building and ultimately benefitting from
the quality-control service we provide.
“It’s also worth bearing in mind that, even after the
increase, our building consent fees will still be lower
than other councils’. Fees for a single story-dwelling will
be $3294 in Tasman, $3900 in Nelson and $4070 in
Marlborough.”
A full list of the new fees is on the council’s website.

Japanese exchange student Mizuki Yamahata (front, second from left) pictured with his hosts, the Ricketts family.
On the final Saturday before the end of school term,
an early evening barbecue was underway in “downtown”
Puponga.
By the time The GB Weekly turned up, the gas grill at
Treetops was already sizzling with local lamb, wild venison
and a pile of spare ribs. In traditional fashion, the blokes
were clustered around the barbie, drinking beer while their
partners caught up over a glass of wine. Around a large
outdoor table, a dozen or so teenagers are laughed and a
joked with each other and (mostly) ignored their smartphones.
It was a happy, relaxed gathering but with a tinge of sadness;
everyone had come to say cheerio to an honorary member of
the Collingwood “family” who was returning to Japan after
a year in their midst.
It’s a long way from the city lights of Osaka to the unlit rural
township of Puponga, but last January, 16 year-old Mizuki
Yamahata made the courageous leap and lived happily in
his adopted home.
Naturally, those finding it hardest to say goodbye to the
young exchange student were his hosts, the Ricketts family,
who consider Mizuki as one of their own. Kate Ricketts says
that she, along with husband Shane and the children - Turi
(18), Luke (16), Cooper (7) and Logan (6), were very sorry
to see him go.
“The kids love him – it’s been great for all of them and
he’s fitted right in.”
Kate says that when they first met Mizuki off the plane
at Nelson airport early in 2015 he seemed a little lost. “He
hardly spoke any English, but it was just a confidence thing.”
A month or so of full immersion into Kiwi ways in the Ricketts
family and Collingwood Area School soon helped him find
his feet.
Mizuki is very grateful to his hosts and was quick to
acknowledge their language support. “It was quite hard
because I couldn’t speak much English, but Turi helped a

lot.”
As a measure of his personal growth, Mizuki gave an
impressive solo guitar-and-vocals performance of a traditional
Japanese song at the CAS prizegiving, something he could
not have envisaged doing during his first few weeks here. “I
didn’t expect to be singing in public.”
As he said goodbye, Mizuki reflected on a truly lifechanging experience. He reeled off the activities he took
part in whilst in New Zealand, and it was clear he grasped
every possible opportunity. He was a key player in the U17
Golden Bay AFC football team – and even turned out for the
senior side. He also completed his scuba training. “The dive
course was great.”
He braved a parachute jump in Taupo. “It was a great
experience but I didn’t tell my Mum before. When I did, she
said, ‘Are you crazy? You could die!” Other local activities
helped him tick things off his long bucket-list. “I’ve ridden a
motorbike and taken a horse trek.” And right up until he left
the Bay, Mizuki was determined to savour a final taste of the
great outdoors by joining a three-day kayaking trip to Abel
Tasman National Park.
Mizuki’s talent for sport saw him selected for the Area
Schools National Tournament. “I enjoyed that the most.” And
he’s got stuck into the traditional rural way of life, with a little
help from his friends. “I’ve helped Shane with the sheep farm
and I butchered a wild pig.”
When he returned to his homeland, Mizuki was more or
less straight back to school but he said he would encourage
others to follow in his footsteps. “I will say to my school mates
that an exchange is a good thing.”
He looked around the table, taking in the faces of his
many Kiwi mates. “They tease me a lot, but it’s fun. I will
miss these guys.”
And they will miss you, too. Sayonara Yamahata-san.

Kelly Byrne has been appointed Golden Bay Civil
Defence’s new alternate local controller. He will provide
backup to the Bay’s lead Local Controller, Sara Chapman.
Both roles are voluntary.
Mr Byrne is a former Commanding Officer Base Wing,
RNZAF Base Woodbourne, now living in Takaka. In recent
years he has also run his own vineyard and was manager
of Marlborough Airport Ltd.
Mr Byrne said: “My wife and I have recently moved
to Golden Bay and, now being retired, we’d thought it
time to do something for the community. We had already
joined Lions but when I saw that the community needed
a new alternatve controller I thought that I’d volunteer
since I’d held this role in Marlborough.”
Nelson Tasman Emergency Management group
controller Roger Ball welcomed Mr Byrne to the role. “Our
region is privileged to have the support of talented and
hard-working people in the community,” he said.

Information Centre survey
A survey has been created for Golden Bay ratepayers
to have their say on future funding for the Information
Centre in Takaka.
Golden Bay Promotions are seeking approximately
$30,000 per year in funding to keep the Information
Centre open and have sought the assistance of the
Golden Bay Community Board. Two options have been
selected – either no change, or a targeted rate of $9.20
per rateable unit. Currently, there are 3,260 rateable
rating units in Golden Bay. The targeted rate would be
on top of the additional sum which will be added in the
2016/2017 year for the operation of the new Golden Bay
Community Recreation Facility. This amount is expected
to be between $42 and $49.
Ratepayers are encouraged to have their say online
at <www.surveymonkey.com/r/gbinfocentre>. Paper
copies are available from the Takaka Service Centre.

Summer Food Fair 2016
Celebrity chef Michael van de Elzen presents his Westhaven cockles with courgette spaghetti.
For the organisers of the Collingwood Summer Food Fair,
the first weekend of the new year brought an anxious 36
hours.
Collingwood Rugby Football Club (CRFC) members and
supporters had spent days setting up, raising vast marquees
and sponsor tents and preparing for their major fundraiser
event, but after endless days of golden weather, the rains
came.
Facebook messages encouraged locals and visitors to come
down to the recreation ground rain or shine: “Over 600 metres
of canvas. If you are seeking shade from the sun or shelter from
the storm we’ve got you covered.” And on the day: “There is
heaps of cover and the cooks are raring to go.”
By noon, when the gates opened, hundreds of cars filled
with adults and children were forming a traffic jam, the sky
cleared to a brilliant blue and the sun shone for the next six
hours.
Event organiser Pete Watkins recalls that he breathed a
sigh of relief.
“We had to put out the sun lotion instead of umbrellas.
Still, I am in awe of the number of people who made the
commitment to attend, given the awful weather from Saturday
until Sunday morning. We are really very grateful.”
The star attraction was celebrity chef Michael van de Elzen,
who presented two cooking demonstrations from a country
kitchen set. With spectators all around, he presented in all
directions. Young enthusiasts crowded the stage to see the
action. Michael created dishes with local produce as the hero

green crème; Southern cockles with chilli, kale and spaghetti
(from the cookbook Fast); and his third dish was a variation on
the people’s pie, featuring venison with tomato, mushroom,
onion and cheese (from the Food Truck TV series). He
entertained the crowd with his cooking yarns, his Masterchef
challenge that the contestants could not complete in time,
and terrifying tales from the food truck trips. He made the art
of cooking look simple and the results were mouthwateringly
delicious.
This was Michael’s third trip to Golden Bay.
“I love getting out of Auckland. It is wonderful to meet
people and most often this happens when I do book signings.”
He is wistful about being a face that is recognised. “I don’t
get to many festivals as a visitor, but when Pete invited me
to Collingwood I said yes immediately.” Pete confirmed the
TV personality was a pleasure to deal with and that “he was
a very easygoing house guest.
“I was not so relaxed as I had to cook dinner for him the
night before,” Pete smiled.
Michael exudes a passion for food. “I absolutely love
cooking and it’s so great to use local produce. I am still
learning about cooking. You can never learn enough.” As
he walked around the recreation ground in his gumboots he
stopped to chat to children and teens and to visit each food
stall to taste the food and talk with the cooks. As judge of
the food fair stalls he awarded the supreme prize to Brendan
Robinson and Mark Heuvel for their succulent spit-roasted
beast and butchery skills.
This was a step up for the annual event, and Pete is full
of praise for the sponsors, donors and volunteers who made
the CFRC fundraiser another success.
“The list is as long as the Golden Bay phone book but I
have to give a special thank you to Roger and the team at
Fresh Choice Takaka, Craig and Karen at Take Note Takaka,
Dan and family at Anatoki Salmon, and Steph at More FM
and Radio Live who brought Michael into the studio to record
nice ads for radio. Roll on to our 10th anniversary next year;
I’m sure we can make it bigger and better.”
All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the Collingwood
recreation ground and clubrooms.

With midsummer upon us,
plants need special attention
to stay healthy: adequate

Stressed plants are more

pest insects and diseases.
In Simple Homemade

Biological controls can also

use beneficial predators and
parasitoids and pathogens to
create a balanced ecosystem
that minimises damage done

The first steps are to feed the

Rec Park Centre: huge auction planned
A fundraising golf
tournament and auction in
early February will put some
drive into the community
component of the campaign to
build the shared recreational
facility at Takaka’s Recreation
Park.
“Auction organiser Logan
Solly has worked his usual
magic, so there have been
some really impressive
donations to the auction,
says Rec Park Centre
committee chair, Dean Lund.
“We’ve already got over
$30,000 worth of a wide
variety of goods and services
- everything from housepainting to drench, and two
new sets of golf clubs to a
Fonterra milk tanker.”
The Ambrose team
tournament is at the Takaka
Golf Club at 11am on Sunday
7 February, the day before the
public holiday that observes
Waitangi Day. Entries ($50
per player) are limited, as
the course can comfortably

Tata Swim this Saturday
This Saturday 16 January, before you pop down to the
A&P Show, come along and support Golden Bay’s only seaswimming event at beautiful Tata Beach. Join in by taking a
boat ride out to Tata Island and swim to shore or swim the
round trip yourself. The sea is warm; the atmosphere friendly.
If you are not made for the water come along and support this
event anyway. Funds raised go towards supporting the GBHS
pool making this the only dedicated fundraiser for the pool.
See the ad in this week’s Upcoming Events section for
more information. Another wonderful Golden Bay summer
event. See you there.

Library use
It’s a shame that our librarians have to spend their time
managing the large number of visitors who only come to the
library to use the free Wi-Fi.
It would make more sense to have the free Wi-Fi hotspot
on the Village Green. There’s more room there for visitors
and it would free up the library.

TDC interest rate swaps
I would like to thank TDC chief executive, Lindsay
McKenzie for his 409 words on this issue, (GBW 30/12), but
cannot; there was no clarification.
My attempt is to draw readers’ attention to the multiple
occasions where ratepayers, throughout the world, have
experienced very costly consequences as a result of these
complex financial derivatives.
I was looking for the simplicity the other side of the
complexity and it appears to be this; “At times when interest
rates decline, the value of the swaps goes down, creating a…
book loss”. So rather than TDC ratepayers benefitting when
interest rates go down, our involvement with swaps creates
the opposite effect.
The Council’s Treasury Report RFN15-11-03, 26 November
2015 states “…the Council’s debt is currently fully covered
by interest rate swaps which are at a higher rate than current
floating debt rates.” The multiple swap contracts, allegedly
“insurance policies” are therefore, in the TDC’s own words,
costing us money not saving us money in a world where
interest rates have been tumbling.
Complex financial derivatives such as collateralised debt
obligations and other forms of swap were invented and sold
by banks in order to maximise their profitability. The TDC
has apparently been “advised” to buy these swaps, “we have
little choice…” and I find this worrying.
As for McKenzie’s claim that “Local government finances
are quite different from the private sector”, I think he will find
that, as a public servant, his third-of-a-million a year salary
and TDC’s entire income is ultimately derived from the hard
earned pay of ratepayers in the private sector.

Portaloos for freedom campers
The Golden Bay Community Board acknowledges our
gratitude to Wayne Green of Wholemeal Café and Terry
Knight and Rachel Raine of Schnapp Dragon for their
generosity in sponsoring portaloos to be placed at tourist
spots used by freedom campers.
The toilets have been placed at Taupata Point and Reilly
Street. Both of these areas have attracted considerable
numbers of overnight campers who are not in self-contained
vehicles.
Without daily compliance visits moving tourists on to
accredited camping sites with facilities, this is the best
outcome to keep Golden Bay clean; as the present situation
could become a significant health and safety issue.
Both Wholemeal Café and Schnapp Dragon business
owners will also meet the maintenance and cleaning costs
associated with the upkeep of these portaloos which will be
in place for the tourist season.
Our heartfelt thanks to these two wonderful Golden Bay
businesses for this timely assistance to help alleviate a very
difficult problem.
A meeting of interested people will be organised to discuss
how we manage this issue for the future.
Carolyn McLellan ,
GB Community Board chair
Freedom campers
At the last Golden Bay Community Board meeting a
ratepayer, who was upset by freedom campers on public
land adjoining her property, told us how she went up their
van and said “Just to warn you, the ranger is on his way to
remove you, and issue a fine“. Apparently they said thank
you and departed without any bother.
This makes me think that there is no need for TDC to
engage, at extra cost, council employees to police these
freedom campers, but to create a voluntary group of willing
ratepayers as unpaid “honorary council officers“. Those
selected would have full powers of issuing tickets and power
to request immediate departure of offending campers.
This would prevent the threat of vigilantes, be of no cost
to ratepayers, and be very effective for those living close to
the areas at risk.
Surely these honorary rangers can be created by emergency
legislation under existing regulations.
Those who are intimidated by freedom campers, use the
approach as initiated by the abovementioned house-holder.
This may answer Helena Thorpe’s question in her letter (GBW
30/12) “What can we do to protect our environment? Is there
provision for us to get help?”
Please give us advice TDC.

Local survey
The Golden Bay Community Board has been requested
by Golden Bay Promotion Association to investigate the
possibility of a rate to keep the Golden Bay Visitor Centre
open now that Tasman District Council funding has been
withdrawn.
A ratepayer survey is available online https://www.
surveymonkey.com/r/gbinfocentre or paper copies can be
Golden Bay’s bottle store with something more
picked up at the Golden Bay Service Centre, the Golden Bay
Library or Tasman District Council Richmond.
Multiple property owners may complete an additional
paper survey as the online survey can only be completed
once.
This proposed rate of $9.20 (3,260 rateable units) would be
levied on Golden Bay properties for the purpose of providing
funding for Golden Bay Promotion Association to keep the
visitors centre open at a cost of $30,000 per year.
It is important that Golden Bay ratepayers complete this
survey as your views will inform the Board’s recommendation
to Council.
Final decision is TDC’s as only TDC can set rates, not the
GB Community Board.

Message from Police
Takaka Police are concerned about the notable increase in
people failing to wear cycle helmets in Golden Bay. During
the next few months we will be making an effort to reverse this
trend. Please assist us by ensuring you and your children or
friends wear helmets whilst bicycling. If lending your bicycle,
lend a helmet as well. The fine for not wearing a helmet is
$55 but more importantly, you could die.

A Blessing
On Christmas morning we woke to find a mythical
messenger at the foot of our bed.
She was a beautiful silky brindle dog with soft brown
eyes and a welcoming tongue. There she lay on her back
and wiggled, waving her paws. Obviously she was pleased
to see us, while we were mystified as to how she found our
bedroom and then just lay down to rest. Perhaps this was
needed due to the effort of feeding her puppies, as her teats
were swollen and full of nourishment.
The overwhelming feelings of warmth and love which
filled us from her visit have stayed with us. And when we
recount this lovely appearance, our feelings are shared by
those hearing of it; they too are given this happiness.
Also, due to the kindness of Zac, who found her owner,
our Christmas morning messenger is now reunited with her
puppies. Happy New Year.

at the movies: The Art of Recovery
It’s easy to dismiss the arts as an irrelevant luxury – a
first-world indulgence that is often more about the ego of
the artist than the value or quality of the work. Sadly, it’s a
view commonly shared by governments the world over who
tend to see the arts as a target for spending cuts and the last
in line for funding.
Such a narrow-minded view is based on a cold cost-benefit
analysis which fails to factor in the contribution that the arts
make to societal wellbeing. That’s a grave mistake, because,
art is a way of making sense of the world around us, of helping
us to understand the human condition, to communicate love,
joy and despair, and to provide an escape. And it’s often in
the darkest times that art shows its real value.
The 2011 Christchurch earthquake is probably the worst
thing that has happened on, or more accurately to, NZ soil
in living memory, but it wasn’t only buildings that were
destroyed by the shocks. The loss of brick, concrete and
timber structures also led to the collapse of the city’s vibrant
cultural scene.
The story of how the shaken city recovered its creative
mojo and used it to repair the community’s social fabric is told
in The Art of Recovery, a new documentary by Peter Young.
The film goes beyond the story of material devastation told, for
example, in When A City Falls (2011), to show how a small
number of innovative, tenacious and community-minded
individuals planted and nurtured the seeds (sometimes
literally) of urban cultural renaissance.
Young combines talking heads, intriguing shots of the
CBD and on-site footage to excellent effect. One of his most
engaging interviewees is Coralie Winn, an actor who lost her
theatre, so set up Gap Filler, an organisation that helps small
enterprises set up on vacant sites across the wrecked city.
Many of the “pop-up” projects featured are weird and
quite wonderful: First we see Dance-O-Mat, an outside public
dance floor where sound and lights are run by a coin-operated
washing machine. Subsequently Young shows us a sweet
and gentle guerrilla botanist planting healing herbs in small
pockets of soil amongst the city’s rubble. Other businesses
include a cafe where burgers are distributed to diners using

Artists support more clean-ups
on Farewell Spit
Twelve local artists who participated in the recent 2015
Farewell Spit Artist Residency were so appalled by the amount
of marine and household rubbish that had washed up on the
shores of the Spit that they collected it during their six-day
stay and took it with them when they left.
Some of the artwork being produced for the upcoming
exhibition in March/April 2016 will reflect on the concerns
felt by the artists during their stay. In the interim they have
decided as a group to take even more positive action.
Reproductions of each of their works have been made
into sets of cards. The artists are donating all proceeds to
Keep Golden Bay Beautiful towards their ongoing work with
Farewell Spit Eco Tours to organise and pay for Farewell Spit
clean-ups.
During their residency they hauled back to the base
compound a wide variety of rubbish, from plastic and glass
bottles to fishing nets, clothing, toys and objects too obscure
to name and far too many made of plastic which are hazardous
to sea birds and other marine life. They were shocked by the
sheer volume of rubbish that had been washed onto both the
ocean beach and the inner beach by currents and tides.
The card sets are made up of two half-set packets of six,
selling at $20 for one set or $36 for both sets and depict
the artists’ early responses to their Farewell Spit stay.
Unlimited Copies offered a generous rate for printing them
and the outlets selling them, Art Bank, MONZA, DOC and
Farewell Spit Eco Tours have lent their support by taking no
commission on sales. The exhibition to be titled Under the
Light, will be held at Art Bank from 25 March until 25 April
2016 and will feature some of the collected litter displayed
in a big bin that had also been washed up.

Fake pedestrian crossing
painted on Tasman St
During the night of Friday 8 January a mysterious handpainted pedestrian crossing appeared on Tasman Street in
Collingwood. Done with a roller and white paint, the half-ametre-wide crossing stretches between On The Spot and the
Collingwood Memorial Hall.
Takaka police refused to comment.
“At this stage the police have not identified anyone
who has committed the act, and we are still unsure of their
motivations,” said acting senior sergeant of the Nelson District
Command Centre, Matthew Elliot.
Whether it was petty vandalism or a vigilante act,
speculation in Collingwood is running rife. With the swell
of holiday traffic in Collingwood during the busy season
and nowhere for pedestrians and the elderly to safely cross
the road, locals have been talking for years about the need
for a crossing. One shop worker who preferred to remain
anonymous said: “I even heard some people talking in the
supermarket here in Collingwood the other day, saying we
need a pedestrian crossing here with all the tourists all over
the road.”
Foreign pedestrians have been seen on a number of
occasions mistakenly utilising the fake crossing. Tasman
District Council communications advisor Chris Choat
confirmed there had been some contractors looking into its
removal.
A certain amount of signage and markings, suitable
lighting, and reflective painting are required for a safe and
legal crossing, he said.
“If a driver isn’t aware there’s a crossing and someone steps
out, there’s an added risk of collision. There are a number of
things that have to occur for a legal pedestrian to be put in,
as the rules are written by NZTA, but if Collingwood believes
they need one, they can approach council.”

Summer night market at Wild Earth
A new venture gaining interest this summer is Wild Earth’s
Wild Wednesday Evening Market, attracting a range of local
vendors, art and craft, buskers and live music to what was
once the Bencarri Park in Kotinga.
The idea for the weekly event arose last year for Bee Fradis
and her partner Ian Purves, who live on a property opposite.
They went to Hawaii and were deeply inspired by the festive,
local night-market culture alive there.
“It’s all about the stalls, the food, the lighting, the warm
nights,” she says. “We’re not that big yet but we’re just going
to keep our thing and see it evolve.”
According to Bee, while the art and craft vendors have been
a success, not many food vendors have turned up, causing
the Wild Earth kitchen to stay open late into the night for the
hungry market-goers. “Originally, we were hoping to not have
our kitchen open much, but it’s evolved into its own thing,
which is great too.”
Sports results / Hua tākaro
Bee and Ian have high hopes for the market next summer.
“I see it potentially becoming as big as the Saturday Market;
lots of stalls and vendors, and the space is huge and we can
cater for it.”
Many customers may be sad to hear the park will close for
a break in February this year. “There will probably be people
who will be disappointed,” Bee says. “But everybody who
knows us knows why, and understands our reasons.”
In March last year, a fire destroyed the garage and part
of Bee and Ian’s home opposite the park. “We only just
finished building our new house a week before we opened
this season, so we’re giving ourselves a break. It’s been full
on—an exhausting year, but we got through it.”
People can look forward to a closing party. On Sunday 17
January, as part of Nelson Arts Council’s Summer Movies Al
Fresco, Al Courniad will be screening in an outdoor movie
event. A spit roast will be available.

TAB machine
now installed at
the Telegraph
Sports and racing punters have responded positively
to the relocation of the TAB machine to the Telegraph
Hotel.
Since 8 January, punters have been able to place
bets and deposit money into their TAB accounts using
the machine which used to be housed at the Junction
Hotel.
Telegraph Hotel licensee Michael Delhanty says that
when the Junction stopped trading, quite a few people
began asking him when the machine was going to shift
to the Telegraph.
“I explained to them that the required $10,000 upfront
payment hadn’t been budgeted for in our winter trading,
so I couldn’t do it straight away.”
Michael adds that the commission he receives from the
business done on the touch-screen machine means he will
take about two years to cover his initial investment.
“It’s a marketing thing, really. I’m hoping locals and
visitors might come in and have a coffee or a beer with
us while their placing their bets. Those people camping
around the Bay at places like Totaranui, Tukurua and
Collingwood can drop in here on their trips to town, have
a bet and a drink if they like and even top up their TAB
account. I’m training my staff in the finer details of the
machine’s operation and the punters are being patient
while we’re bedding in the systems.”
One detail that punters need to understand is that the
highest value winning vouchers from the machine that
Michael is able to cash are those worth $200.
“We have that floor limit because we bank daily, so
there just isn’t enough cash on the premises to pay out
larger sums.”
Racing Board retail support manager Alicia Gainsford
said: “It’s great to have a new TAB location in Takaka to
service Golden Bay. We’re really excited to work with
Michael and his great team. When you bet with the TAB
on racing or take a punt on the All Blacks or European
football, every betting dollar contributes to grass roots
racing and sports in New Zealand and the livelihoods
of the hundreds of thousands of Kiwis involved in these
sectors.”

On Friday evening the game players enjoyed a meal, enjoyed learning about project management. A bigger group
