PROTECT
To invest in land for the sake of coming generations,
for the benefit of all its unique plant and animal populations.
Land protection is manifested through the acquisition of properties;
partnerships with like-minded organizations; scientific study of our resident resources;
and nurturing of relationships between the land and the people who use it.
Pine Brook Preserve, Montville Township
LAND PROTECTION
In 2011, 59 acres were added to Pine Brook Preserve
in Montville Township and The Maple Highlands
Trail in Middlefield.
In 2012, 237 acres were added to Beaver Creek
Preserve in Munson Township, Observatory Park in
Montville Township and The Maple Highlands Trail.
RESEARCH
An important element of land protection is conducting
research to help us understand what is preserved. A
Bioblitz is held on a different park land each year,
with assistance from biologists and other experts, to
inventory every living thing on a piece of property.
2011 BIOBLITZ
OTHER STUDIES
PINE BROOK PRESERVE, MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP
• In 2011, several uncommon birds, including the
Magnolia Warbler, were documented in Claridon
Township.
Findings:
• 700 species of plants and animals
• 1 Ohio Potentially Threatened grass
• 2 declining bat species
• Racket-tailed Emerald dragonfly (Ohio Endangered)
• Harlequin Darner dragonfly (Ohio Threatened)
• Your natural resource management (NRM) team
studied the re-population of animals that took
up residence in the newly restored wetlands and
streams of Sunnybrook Preserve and Orchard
Hills Park in Chester Township.
2012 BIOBLITZ
SPECIES PROTECTION
ELDON RUSSELL PARK, TROY TOWNSHIP
• Park District staff assisted the Ohio Division of Wildlife
and The Ohio State University in surveying and
documenting rare fish species in Geauga County.
Findings:
• 738 species of plants and animals
• 2 declining bat species
• Rare plants, such as the woodland horsetail
• Several uncommon birds
RANGER PROTECTION
The Ranger Department completed 5,633 security checks
in 2011 and an estimated 7,850 security checks in 2012 to
ensure your parks remain safe and healthy.
• Coyotes and various species of amphibians and
butterflies were surveyed as part of routine studies
conducted on park properties.
• Your NRM team helped the US Environmental
Protection Agency sample the water quality of Lake
Kelso, located in Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve
in Burton Township. This data will be used as a
benchmark for a national study on the health status of
our nation’s lakes.

CONSERVE
To listen to Nature. To track its health. To keep it safe.
Conservation is literally a grassroots activity. Going beyond the study of habitats
and inhabitants of the land, it is the use of best practices to manage what we have;
it is the act of stewardship to maintain the greatest balance between habitats and inhabitants.
Reforestation efforts at Orchard Hills Park, Chester Township
LAND MANAGEMENT
FA C I L I T I E S M A N A G E M E N T
• As part of the ongoing reforestation efforts at Orchard Hills Park,
Geauga Park District planted 285 trees within stream restoration
sites.
• Replaced 2 fishing piers at Walter C. Best Wildlife
Preserve
• Your NRM team planted more than 8 acres of native wildflower
meadow habitat at Frohring Meadows.
• Repaired a bridge at Sunnybrook Preserve
• To enhance the fishing experience for anglers, bass and bluegill were
stocked at Beartown Lakes Reservation and Walter C. Best Wildlife
Preserve in 2011, and at Swine Creek Reservation and Orchard Hills
Park in 2012.
• To control invasive plants on four properties within the Grand
River Watershed, Geauga Park District worked with the Nature
Conservancy’s Grand River Watershed Invasive Plant Strike Team.
• To help increase the nesting success of rare turtles and songbirds,
Geauga Park District partnered with USDA Wildlife Services to
control raccoons on selected park lands.
• Installed a horse ford at Beartown Lakes Reservation
• Built a new Interurban railroad display structure
at The Rookery, an aggregate trail at Chickagami
Park and a guardrail along the entrance to Big
Creek Park
• Designed The Maple Highlands Trail’s Chardon
connector and southern section and asphalt
improvements for 2013
• Completed construction of Observatory Park’s
main campus and began planning for Phase IV —
restoration of the Nassau Astronomical Observing
Station — to complete the park
In 2011 and 2012, Geauga Park District Foundation received contributions totaling $11,905
for land stewardship to support the reforestation of Orchard Hills Park.
Allen and Kathy Holland of Chardon are dedicated supporters of Geauga Park District’s
conservation efforts: “We support land preservation because we want our grandsons to enjoy
being able to hike in open spaces like beautiful meadows and green forests and be able to stop
to hear the birds.”

NEW CONNECTIONS
In 2011, Geauga Park District hosted the first-ever
Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run in The West Woods.
What was to be a one-time run to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Geauga Park District was so successful, it has become an annual event.
Attendees: 476 in 2011, 543 in 2012
Connecting with the Community
Each year, Geauga Park District staff members give from their own pockets and
pantries to benefit the community.
They annually host two food drives and a United Way Turkey Bowl
to raise money for the Geauga Hunger Task Force. Through the Grow a Row
initiative during summer months, Park District staff raise and sell produce from
their own gardens to donate earnings to United Way. Lots of Socks for Tots
also collects clothing items for children during the holiday season, which are
then donated to Geauga County Job and Family Services for families in need.
Cash raised: $2,140 in 2011, $1,795 in 2012
CONNECTING ON YOUR

CELEBRATE
To honor and observe momentous events
with your closest supporters and friends.
The years 2011 and 2012 marked some tremendous milestones for your Geauga Park District.
Its 50th anniversary was 2011; your one-of-a-kind Observatory Park was opened in 2012; and voters raised their voices for
Nature by going to the polls to pass a replacement levy in November 2012. For all of this, we celebrate and thank you!
One of the most extraordinary new
features, opened to the public in 2012,
is the one-of-a-kind Observatory Park in
Montville Township. Designated by the
International Dark-Sky Association as one
of only 11 International Dark Sky Parks
in the world, Observatory Park offers
experiences like no other property.

SERVICE
To contribute to the welfare of others.
Geauga Park District volunteers gave of their time to enhance all that the Park District is able to do,
from greeting visitors to land stewardship to scientific research to fundraising. The full measure of
value cannot be calculated. In terms of dollars and cents, volunteers gave 9,424 hours in 2011 and
9,259 hours in 2012. At $19.23* per hour, this equates to $359,274, or nine full time staff!

So much of what is accomplished within Geauga Park District is due in part to the tireless
fundraising efforts of the Geauga Park District Foundation. In 2011 and 2012, the Foundation
Board of Trustees embarked on an aggressive agenda.
Their accomplishments included completion of a three-year strategic plan embracing three
strategic goals: development of mission, vision and value statements; design of a three-year
comprehensive fundraising plan; and enhancement of Board governance initiatives.
The Foundation also completed the Observatory Park Capital Campaign, exceeding its goal
and raising a total of $2,167,452.
“I am extremely proud of the Board of Trustees for their passion, engagement and commitment
to the Geauga Park District’s exceptional programs and services leading as advocates, advisors,
connectors and fundraisers,” said Foundation Chair Richard Frenchie. “Their time, talent and
treasures have had a huge and favorable impact on the past two years. We are well positioned
for 2013 and beyond.”
In addition to the fundraising campaign for Observatory Park, the Foundation has funded and
continues to fund numerous initiatives that connect people with their parks:
• School bus funding for Geauga County schools that cannot afford field trips to the parks
• The Chip Henry Institute for Outdoor Adventure, established in memory of Charles “Chip”
Henry to support outdoor activities geared toward youth
• Nature Scopes science-based binocular training for Geauga County fifth-graders

SUPPORT
SPECIAL PEOPLE / SPECIAL PROJECTS
Important to the protection of our Geauga County resources are the partnerships of groups and individuals who support the
mission of Geauga Park District. From the establishment of the Park District by the League of Women Voters in 1961 to the
continuing work of the Geauga Park District Foundation today, many people connect with and support the mission.
Meta Jo Dennis is a longtime fan of
Geauga Park District and donor to
the Geauga Park District Foundation.
Although she lives in Avon Lake
now, she continues to contribute to
the Foundation’s Annual Campaign,
and in 1994 she and her husband,
John Dennis, included a gift to the
Foundation in their estate plans.
Meta is amazed and thrilled at what
Geauga Park District has become since
the early years when it was “only one
picnic table and a trash can at Woodin
Road Park.”
As a member of the League of Women
Voters, Meta was one of the women
who advocated for and worked to
establish the Park District in 1961.
She also served on its first Advisory
Committee, which was set up by Park
District Naturalist Duane Ferris. Meta
recalls the passion of fellow League
members Bertha Osborne, Connie
Webb and Jean Ruh for establishing
the parks and preserving land for future
generations of county residents to enjoy.
In the days before Geauga County had
parks, early supporters were interested
in saving open lands and woodlands to
bring people from across the county into
common areas.
“I thought our park system could be
a way to break down barriers across
township boundaries, to create a shared
and common purpose – saving our
most beautiful lands,” she said. “I am
happy that the park system is fulfilling
that mission to bring us together and
preserve land.”
Meta Jo Dennis
Connecting Youth
with the Outdoors
In the fall of 2011, the Geauga Park
District Foundation began fundraising
for the Chip Henry Institute for
Outdoor Adventure, established in
memory of Judge Charles “Chip” Henry,
whose life’s work was dedicated to the
well-being of youth and his love of the
outdoors.
All funds raised for the Chip Henry
Institute are used to support youth
programs through Geauga Park
District. In 2011 and 2012, the Institute
received $30,225 in contributions,
including all proceeds from the
Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run.
