Breathe deeply here and weep not.
Y. Nhat Chu, Taoist Mind-Shape Boxer
With this awareness of all I think, say, and do, I promise to honor
and protect myself, my family, and all others.
The East Harlem School Vow of the Warrior
Some of our students have no home. Others have a home but in
that home they have no heat. Some have homes with heat that
go fatherless. Others have homes that lie motherless. Some have
homes of two parents with wages too low. And yet all of our
students stand tall and grateful because they breathe deeply and
promise to see things as they are - and then act accordingly. They
are at home in their own skin.
An alumnus made Copenhagen his home for autumn semester.
Our Dean Anne Ross, helped make a foster placement feel like a
home - for a student likely to make a home for herself next year
in a boarding school. Our 8th graders and alumni keep our school
home open on weekends by strongly staffing our Saturday School.
So everyone has a place here, a home here. Students rarely miss
school, their home away from home. Our home here is a place
where absence is avoided and really makes hearts grow fonder.
Every school should be refuge for the wanderer, and peace and
calm should settle upon all who enter, so then they can do the
work of wonder, which is the soul of education. Not only can you
really take a deep breath in our building, we remind each other to
do so in stillness, movement, and in our vow.
One score, some 20 years ago. The home we have built together,
you and I, leaves me, in forgotten moments, breathless.
Thank you,
Ivan

The East Harlem School at Exodus House
Small school. BIG impact.
Our mission: The East Harlem School at Exodus House is an independent
middle school that serves students in grades 4-8 from low-income families
in Harlem who exhibit an earnest desire to rise to their academic potential.
EHS targets children from underserved families and then helps them develop
academic excellence, moral integrity, courtesy, and an unshakable
commitment to their future and the fate of their community. EHS provides
an intensive year-round academic program over an extended school day
(8:00AM-5:00PM) and offers a comprehensive learning experience for
students through a challenging combination of academic, extracurricular,
summer, travel, and alumni programs.
Our history: Exodus House has been an anchoring and iconic institution
in Harlem since its founding in 1963 by Reverend Dr. Lynn and Mrs. Leola
Hageman as a drug rehabilitation center. Due to a heightened concern for
the welfare and well-being of the community’s many underserved, at-risk
children, Exodus House was converted in 1984 to an after-school and
summer program facility. Then, in the fall of 1993, inspired by the steadfast
commitment of the Hagemans to the East Harlem community, the couple’s
sons, Hans and Ivan, opened an independent year-round middle school on the
original Exodus House site to better address the critical needs of these children
and their families. Today, EHS is chartered by the New York State Department
of Education and accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Schools. The East Harlem School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The East Harlem School admits students of any race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation,
national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded
or made available to students at the School. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,
disability, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in administration
of its educational polices, employment or hiring practices, financial aid or scholarship
programs, athletic or other school-administered programs.

2012-2013 Program Achievements
INTEGRATED EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Integrated into the extended school day (8:00AM - 5:00PM)
are a number of extracurricular activities that complement and
enrich academic coursework.
Athletics: The EHS Athletics program included interscholastic
soccer, lacrosse, track, and intramural basketball. Teams focused
on physical fitness, teamwork, and foundational skills to lead
them in their development. On average, students participated
in six hours of weekly physical activity. All 5th and 6th grade
students attended weekly swimming lessons at Asphalt Green,
and school-wide fitness classes took place at neighboring Wards
Island, weather permitting! In the fall, a number of students
participated in a voluntary after-school boot camp program to
increase strength, stamina, and agility.
Drama: In its sixth year, our drama teacher continued to
diversify and strengthen the curriculum. Each grade spent
significant time preparing for the performance of a play at
the end of the year. They memorized lines, learned about
stage directions, and focused on embodying characters.
Weekly memorization challenges were also incorporated into
the program to encourage students to practice the skill of
memorization as well as to help them learn famous works. The
public speaking and leadership skills taught in drama work to
further enhance students’ ease in all social situations, including
interviewing, and will enable them to meet and communicate
with a wide range of people.
Clubs: EHS students have the opportunity to participate in a
variety of clubs, introducing them to numerous skills across
disciplines. Continued club offerings included community
service, chess, choir, yoga, and boot camp. New offerings
included Dance and Hope Through Health, which helped to
raise funds for medical services and programs in Togo.
SATURDAY SCHOOL
The 2012-2013 school year marked the fifth year of
Saturday School at EHS, an optional program providing
students with 3 hours of tutoring, enrichment activities,
and fitness on Saturday mornings. Thanks to an increase
in volunteers, more than 50% of EHS students took
advantage of this program throughout the year.
Additionally, our 8th graders took a lead role in staffing
Saturday School and provided additional tutoring support
throughout the year.

2012-2013 Program Achievements
OUTDOOR EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
In August 2013, the rising 8th grade class traveled to the Mountain Institute in Circleville, West Virginia
for and eight-day backpacking trip. Students learned self-sufficiency through lessons on cooking, campfire building and safety, tent building, and orienteering. They also participated in workshops to develop
outdoor skills such as navigational skill-building (use of compass and orienteering, etc.) and to expand
their knowledge about the plants, mountains, and culture of the Appalachia mountain community. This
experience strengthened individual and collective leadership among our 8th graders and gave them a
newfound appreciation for their families, friendships, and home communities. This trip was made
possible by generous support from the RMLow Foundation and the Virginia Lopez Foundation.
SUMMER SESSION
The Summer Semester is a critical component of The East Harlem School’s year-round educational
program. In order to provide even more skill-building and enrichment opportunities, EHS students
participated in a mandatory 5-week summer session in addition to the regular 10-month school year.
Summer Session classes were taught by professional teachers and high school and college interns.
The theme for 2013 Summer Session was Compassion in Action. To explore this theme, the entire school
read the new novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. This incredibly moving #1 New York Times Best Seller tells the
story of Auggie Pulman, a boy from New York with a severely deformed face who goes to school for the
first time in 5th grade. The novel follows the struggles and triumphs of his school experience through the
voices of Auggie, his sister, his parents, and his classmates. Paired with the book, we are studying
Compassion in Action in our morning workshops through an exploration of the work done by Paul
Farmer, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Las Madres de La Plaza de Mayo.

ALUMNI PROGRAM
The EHS alumni program served all of its alumni in high school and
college by providing counseling, assistance with the college application
process, life-skills workshops, and internships. As in years past, an EHS
staff member visited alumnus in high schools at their independent,
public, and parochial schools. EHS staff contacted all juniors and seniors
and assisted with the college application process, which includes
speaking with college counselors at each high school, writing letters
of recommendation, and taking alumni on college campus visits.
We continue to offer the Brooks Fellowships for Community Service,
which provides stipends for East Harlem School alumni who work in
summer internships at non-profit and community-based organizations.
This year, 19 EHS alumni were named Brooks Fellows and collectively
completed over 3,400 hours of community service. This program is
made possible by support from Diana and Michael Brooks.

What People are Saying about EHS
“I was so impressed by The East Harlem School’s philosophy and your phenomenal students. I appreciated how students were
learning not
only how to nurture their minds, but also how to nourish and respect their health and wellness. It’s clear that the school is making a
tremendous impact on your students’ lives. And each and every student with whom I spoke completely impressed me!”

Small school. BIG impact.
Please make your tax-deductible gift to The East
Harlem School today, and make a BIG impact on a
child’s life forever. Please contact the development

The East Harlem School at Exodus House is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. New and
continued support from our donors allows us to
provide an innovative and comprehensive education
to middle school students from low-income families
in Harlem. With your assistance, we can continue
to provide an exceptional learning community to
our ever-growing student body, to offer academic
counseling to our alumni, and to forge ahead with
the School’s growth and expansion. Thank you for
