We can mark the success of our first Design Tour by starting with saying we put ASIDOCC out in front of our community. We can be assured that now most know who we are and what we stand for. We’ve shown we’re not all about the traditional Mediterranean style homes but our ASID designers can design cutting edge, contemporary styles as well. How exciting to know we have introduced the first urban living lifestyle in Orange County. We have so many people to thank for the success of this tour. Our Committee met for many hours in preparation of our opening day, April 21. LAURA YORBA, Allied Member ASID, our chairperson for the project exceeded her duties far beyond any other Chairperson for any previous design house as she managed 4 two story penthouses and 2 flats in a high rise. She dedicated her expert knowledge and time exclusively to this project. She continued to manage the tour with her immediate co-chairs, Barbara Keller, Monica Olson, and John Herrington throughout the duration of the tour. Her leadership and performance was outstanding. She led the design team and her committee through our first Design tour with such grace and professionalism. Laura, thanking you just doesn’t seem enough for all you have done for ASIDOCC and this project. BARBARA KELLER, ASID took on the job of coordinating the marketplace and café. Her creative talents pulled together the marketplace and café in a very small area. She gathered all the permits needed for the tour and coordinated all the well planned Designer Series programs which were given on Wednesdays. She continued to donate countless hours and expertise in planning to help operate the tour. Thank you Barbara for your dedication to the project and for the excellent way you kept your professionalism in line while dealing with all the vendors in the marketplace. You represented us well and we are so proud of you. MONICA OLSON, Allied Member, ASID used her creative talents to help promote the tour and to make sure all signs and banners were made and appropriately placed. She worked along with CANDACE MANNING, Director of Communications and TO Media to make sure we were promoted as well as advertised. We were seen on TV twice, KTLA and KABC, 92.7 radio, Orange Coast Magazine, our sponsor, numerous magazines and newspapers, blogs and facebook. In addition she too has dedicated many hours to the efficient running of the tour. Our sincere thanks for all you have given to this project. JOHN HERRINGTON, Student Member ASID assumed the responsibility of coordinating and booking all corporate parties. He worked closely with Turnip Rose to create menus, and with Classic Party Rentals to create a corporate packet for prospective corporations who needed a venue. Thank you, John for your valuable time and contribution to this event. ADRIEL COGDAL, ASID, CID, Past President, coordinated all the ASID docents and cash register volunteers. In addition, she has taken on the responsibility to accept and mail all our online ticket reservations. She has given countless hours to help in the smooth operation of the tour. Her outstanding and seamless contributions to this project are very much appreciated. A big thank you goes out to her! JAMIE NANAMMY, Allied Member ASID, accepted the responsibility to schedule the designers to move in and out of their spaces. In addition she assisted Barbara for the moving in and out of vendors. We all know the work of Jamie; her scheduling is impeccably planned and executed. She too, has given countless hours to the smooth operation of the tour. We give our many thanks to you Jamie for your time and creative talents. LEANNE TAMARIBUCHI, ASID, CID, and Past President, has served on the committee with invaluable input and dedication of many, many hours towards the development of our first Design Tour. She continued on to serve on the committee to volunteer for the reception desk at the entry on a daily basis during the Design tour. We thank you, Leanne for your dedication to ASIDOCC and for helping to making our first design tour a success. CANDACE MANNING, Allied Member ASID, Communications Director to the Board who worked silently in the back ground with TO Media and Orange Coast Magazine, our sponsor to promote our tour and for the many hours she spent creating our website for online ticket sales and a new link to our Design tour. Thank you, Candace. I would like to thank Lori Hankins and Susan Wesley for distributing flyers and posters and thanks to all members, Professional, Allied Members, Student Members, and Industry Partners who have come forward to help to be a docent. To our DESIGNERS and STUDENT MEMBERS thank you for your many hours and creative talents you’ve dedicated to ASIDOCC in making our tour one of the best in Orange County. You have brought a new concept of living to life. Your work in designing your space is what the show is all about. We are so proud of each and everyone one of you, not only for your creative designs but for the professionalism you have exemplified during this tour. Thank you again, for being a part of our first Design Tour. And now to our INDUSTRY PARTNERS, without your support to our team of Designers and ASID OCC we couldn’t have presented such an outstanding product to the Orange County Community. We showed the community how we work together to create spaces far beyond anyone’s imagination. Your time and dedication to our organization far exceeds anyone’s expectations. Thank you for your professionalism and involvement in our Design Tour. To our BRONZE SPONSORS, FINE FAUCETS/BRIZO, CUSTOM COMFORT MATTRESS, THE DISTRICT, and AUDIO VISIONS thank you for your support. You made it possible with your contributions to bring our beautiful program to this project. We are looking forward to our next big project. DESIGNER RUNWAY scheduled for June 10. M O D E R N L U X U R Y . C O M Letter from the President-Elect Brooke Ziccardi, ASID, CID, LEED AP Dear Membership, We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Summertime in Orange County is one of my favorite seasons as it is filled with warm weather, trips to the beach, BBQ’s, the smell of coconut sunscreen, beautiful sunsets, and time spent with family and friends! This relaxing vibe makes an ideal backdrop for creativity to flourish! But it’s hard to avoid becoming discouraged when reading the newspaper, watching the news, and/or listening to the radio, as all forms of the media have recently been focusing on the economic downturn. In this current economic climate, it’s hard not to be aware of these poor conditions which continue to impact our industry… I like to refer to this financial condition as a “creative time.” This is a rare opportunity where we actually have some calm moments to gather our thoughts, refocus our attention on what’s important and strengthen our goals for the future. Our First Annual ASID Design Tour has been a wonderful example of the talent and creativity which exists here in Orange County. Laura Yorba, our Design Tour Chair, along with her fantastic committee, organized a fabulous project to demonstrate to the public the sophistication and uniqueness that our interior designers produce. The designers of the project did an outstanding job!!! Our chapter continues to explore ways in which we can strengthen and implement our educational programs, business topics, and networking strategies to help you acquire more tools and information to further your growth within our industry. I would like to personally thank our membership for it’s overwhelming response to the recent survey. Your input will assist the strategic team and upcoming 2009/2010 board to keep their finger on the pulse of what YOU, our membership, really value and want to see implemented and sustained within our chapter. There were many exciting ideas that were shared, positive suggestions, and solutions offered about how we can continue to serve the membership needs. Additionally, our chapter has many opportunities to get involved, strengthen your network , and continue your professional growth! I would like to invite each of you to volunteer for a position within our organization so you too can enjoy the rewarding experiences! We are currently filling our 2009/2010 committee positions now. Enclosed with this newsletter is an application, please complete and return to the ASID OC Office. As I mentioned earlier, we are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. The Orange County Chapter offers many wonderful experiences for us to take advantage of this summer! David Kelly, our chair for Designer Runway, and his committee will be sure to keep us in good spirits as this is an event not to be missed! How will you utilize your natural talent and imagination in these “creative times?” What will inspire you? Wishing you all a wonderful summer! The finish line is in view. Step by step, our dedicated committee of volunteer designers has kept at a steady pace to reach our project goal, to turn a house into a home, for our adopted Habitat for Humanity family, Joseph, Katia, Kamille and Jose. To date, the interior and exterior painting is complete, all Kitchen, bathroom cabinets and lighting fixtures have been installed and the flooring is nearly complete at the project site. The excitement mounts with only a couple of weeks left before the furniture installation scheduled for June 22nd. Since our January ASID-OC Chapter meeting, we have relied on our fellow members and friends for their help in donating towards our chapters first community service project with Habitat for Humanity and Furnishing Hope. It is only because of your support that our fundraising efforts made it possible to take a dream into a reality for this very special family. We want to offer special appreciations to all of those who are listed below and responded to our needs, even during the challenges of the current economic times. David Kelley was chosen to Chair for this year’s Event and is bringing it to a new level due to his extensive Modeling Career. We will have about 12 teams consisting of ASID Designers, Students, Industry Partners and Laguna Design Center Showrooms and outside ASID Chapters. The concept of the Event is to have each team Design and construct a Runway worthy ensemble in 90 minutes to be worn by their Fiercest Model who will strut their stuff down the Runway to be judged by Designer Celebrity Judges. The fabrics, trims and accessories will be supplied by various showrooms from The Laguna Design Center. Designer Runway will only be a success if all of you come and either be part of a team or cheer your favorite team on. Due to overwhelming response from the public who have heard about the Event in the past, we are inviting the public. So all our friends, clients and family can see how much creativity and fun ASID Designers really have. After the Runway Show, we clear the chairs and let the DJ loose to really have some fun. There will be a Wine Station along with a Martini Bar. Our Premier Sponsors for the Event are Luxe Magazine, Kravet & Lee Jofa, The Laguna Design Center, and XZO Vodka. This years Event is also to support a wonderful Charity: Working Wardrobes. We ask that you donate your gently worn clothing, shoes or accessories for a tax deduction and benefit those who could greatly use them. www.workingwardrobes.org Joy Wood Design Orange County 10 Nikki Maeda Megan Crane 2009 Design Awards Call for Entries ASID Orange County Chapter and Orange Coast Magazine are announcing the 2009 Call for Entries for the 2009 Design Awards. This year we are so excited to have Tiffany and Co providing the custom created awards for our winners. The categories remain the same as last year and the Dallas Gulf Coast chapter of ASID will judge the entries. The deadline for entries is August 7, 2009. Why should you enter this contest? • It generates business. The winners will be published in Orange Coast Magazine and on the ASID Orange County Website. This can be a valuable addition to your portfolio. Award winners impress clients! • It gives you incentive to get your work photographed. Often, designers are so busy that they fail to take care of easy things that can promote their business. Current photos of your work on your website and portfolio set you apart as a professional designer. • Last but not least, Platinum winners get their dues paid for 2010! Tips for Entering • Keep it simple. This is not a portfolio piece. Use a simple black paper report cover letter size with 3 metal prong fasteners. • Use sleeves for your photos so that they are not damaged. • Do not put your name on your photos or plans. • Provide a color headshot of yourself. A professional headshot is not required to enter but should you win, a professional headshot will be required for publishing in Orange Coast Magazine. Now that you have decided to enter, go to the ASID Orange County website at www.asidocc.org to download the forms and all the information you need to enter. Any questions? Design Orange County 11 2009 ASID Design Trade Show By Jamie Namanny, Allied Member ASID Trade Show Director Mark your calendars for this year’s ASID Design Trade Show on October 14, 2009, at the Bren Center, UCI. The show will be at the same venue as last years with more vendors and lots of valuable door prices. We have some returning vendors and some new vendors for you to meet. I’m excited to say that there will be some Los Angeles vendors who will be participating in our show as well. The vendors will be demonstrating some exciting and new cutting-edge products never seen before. The Trade Show committee has booked a dynamic C.E.U. speaker, Kenneth Roberts, to address today’s economic challenges for the interior designer. Kenneth was our Student Career Day keynote speaker in February and we were all unbelievably impressed with his insight and knowledge of our industry’s unique profession. This C.E.U. will be well worth the admission. It will be held again in the Koll Room at the Bren Center next to the Trade Show hall. Guests enjoyed a delicious pasta dinner accompanied by a glass of wine, while seated amongst the comfortable outdoor furniture. The evening's speakers were Sasha King and Deborah Guyer Greene of epOxyGreen. They brought many examples of their green products and spoke in much detail about the qualities of the items and the various price points. They were very enthusiastic about green design and were able to share a lot of valuable information to the guests. Afterwards, door prizes were called out for a record 27 lucky winners. Enjoy this elegant evening Last year’s Design Award Winners filled with the excitement of the design awards and our first Casino Royal Gala. Our design awards this year will again be sponsored by Orange Coast Magazine and by the prestigious Tiffany and Co. The trophies themselves will be a sight to behold. There is still time to register for the ASID Orange County Chapter-sponsored STEP Workshop scheduled for August 21, 22, and 23, 2009. Early registration is essential to ensure a seat at this event. (The May 2009 Workshop was fully registered weeks before the deadline.) Participants in this STEP Workshop will have an opportunity to experience practice examinations that are patterned after the newest NCIDQ examination. With the guidance of a skilled and experienced instructor, participants will learn which areas of their knowledge require further preparation. In addition, participants will receive a comprehensive workbook that includes practicum exercises and multiplechoice sections to take home and use as practice exercises to improve any identified areas of weakness. These workshops are the best way to prepare for the NCIDQ examination. They provide a safe and supportive environment in which you can obtain an accurate assessment of your skills, ask questions, and learn many valuable tips for taking the examination. These smallgroup, interactive sessions will give you the confidence you need to pass the NCIDQ examination. Register as early as possible to guarantee a seat. This memorable occasion will be filled with excitement, fun, food and drink. The Casino Royal, our theme for the year will take place immediately after the awards ceremony. Everyone will be provided with funny money to enjoy playing their favorite casino games. At the end of the evening your funny money will be exchanged for raffle tickets. These tickets will then be drawn for some very valuable prizes donated by our Industry Partners and local business. Sound like fun? Trust me you’ll have an evening of fun and excitement, a party you won’t want to miss. Design Orange County 17 2009 ASID Design Tour - Urban Living at Astoria By Monica Olson This year’s ASID Orange County Chapter held it’s very first annual ASID Design Tour “Urban Living @ Astoria”, featuring a total of six Penthouses in a high- rise complex in Central Park West, Irvine. This project was jointly promoted by Orange Coast Magazine and developer Intergulf Development Group. We were also proud to announce the selection of Orange County Performing Arts Center as our benefiting charity and appreciate the tremendous amount of hard work put in by our President, Diane Sparacino, the Design Tour Steering Committee and my Co-chairs- John Harrington, Barbara Keller and Monica Olson to make this first Design Tour a successful event. After a slow start, things started picking up and we are thankful to those who were able to attend despite the uncertain economy. We have received rave reviewsattendees were excited to tour not just one but six units, such a departure from the traditional homes of previous years and so very complementary of the extraordinary designs of our talented group. The Designers for the 2009 Tour must be commended on their dedication and hard work in creating these fabulous spaces in such a short time. There were so many new and exciting products along with innovative applications throughout- a fabulous Lalique chandelier, crocodile embossed leather floors, custom mosaic murals and indoor waterscape features, just to name a few. We could not have done this without their participation and owe them a debt of thanks. Designers for this year’s tour include: YOUR FINAL IMPRESSION • White gloved installation of your special furnishings • Experienced, professional and uniformed delivery agents • Large warehouse for receiving your furniture • Five-year warranted fabric protection available • Family owned and operated DIEGO DELIVERY 8160 Miralani Dr. San Diego, CA 92126 (858) 549-3343 • Fax (858) 549-8336 Design Orange County 18 PENTHOUSE 1305: Gary W. Linda Colton of the Laguna Design Center graciously hosted this event with style and grace. Well over a hundred and fifty students from at least 10 different schools attended the Student Career Day, organized with the students’ interests in mind. The students were fortunate to hear a very timely seminar by Kenneth Roberts, Interior Talent, Inc., from Orlando, Florida, about job placement during these uncertain economical times. The students were treated to a guided tour of the design center and greeted warmly by some of the showrooms. The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to round table discussions between the students and the design professionals. The event was a resounding success; please see some students’ quotes: Christy Kim: “It’s been a valuable learning experience. It was inspiring and helped boost motivation to pursue my dreams. It was an honor meeting and hearing from professionals in the industry. Nazgol Seyedi-Rezvani: “Great Event! Very informative, organized, friendly. I really enjoyed it.” Rosy Bosworth: “This was a very well organized event!” It gave me a great introduction into the industry and a kick start in my career.” Ninetr El Ghazawy: “That was a great experience to communicate with other students and the industry.” Tamara Stratton: “ The event was really enjoyable and inspiring – Thank you for giving us students an encouraging glimpse of the future possibilities.” Mayra Villegas: “Before I came I had a box full of questions but, before I could ask them they were already answered.” Lenka Priscakova: An amazing opportunity to know more about the business, how to start, get familiar with recent job market.” Chylyse Vayce Tosi: “It’s always so wonderful to meet the professional designers. Too be able to network is truly valuable and to learn new aspects of design is such a gift as a student. Thank you, everyone was very wonderful.” cont. on page 23 Design Orange County 22 STUDENT CORNER cont. from page 22 Amy Houtenville: “I have learned many options today! Message from the Student Representative to the Board By John Herrington, Student Member ASID Places! Places everyone! House lights fade.... and curtain's up on the 2009 ASID OC Urban Living Tour, benefitting the Orange County Performing Arts Center and sponsored by Orange Coast magazine. How exciting to be a student at this time. Congratulations are in order for IDI and Westwood College students for their selections to participate in the ASID OC Urban Living Tour. Not only were these schools selected for the tour, the tour could not have gone on without the volunteering of students to assist designers and to docent the tour for the four weeks it has run. What a great way to network and get to know designers and other students studying in the interior design field. If you were not able to participate in this event, there are several events still to come for the 2009 ASID Orange County Chapter, including Chairs for Charity, Designer Runaway, and the Upcoming Trade Show. There is always a place for students within the ASID OC chapter. If you want to volunteer or become a Student Member of ASID, just contact us and let us know.
