On hearing the words of the Gospel: "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell what thou hast, and give to the poor" (Matt. 19:21), he immediately put it into action. Distributing to the poor all he had, and fleeing from all the turmoil of the world, he departed to the desert. The manifold temptations he endured continually for the span of twenty years are incredible. His ascetic struggles by day and by night, whereby he mortified the uprisings of the passions and attained to the height of dispassion, surpass the bounds of nature; and the report of his deeds of virtue drew such a multitude to follow him that the desert was transformed into a city, while he became, so to speak, the governor, lawgiver, and mastertrainer of all the citizens of this newly-formed city. The cities of the world also enjoyed the fruit of his virtue. When the Christians were being persecuted and put to death under Maximinus in 312, he hastened to their aid and consolation. When the Church was troubled by the Arians, he went with zeal to Alexandria in 335 and struggled against them in behalf of Orthodoxy. During this time, by the grace of his words, he also turned many unbelievers to Christ. Saint Anthony began his ascetic life outside his village of Coma in Upper Egypt, studying the ways of the ascetics and holy men there, and perfecting himself in the virtues of each until he surpassed them all. Desiring to increase his labors, he departed into the desert, and finding an abandoned fortress in the mountain, he made his dwelling in it, training himself in extreme fasting, unceasing prayer, and fierce conflicts with the demons. Here he remained, as mentioned above, about twenty years. Saint Atha- nasius the Great, who knew him personally and wrote his life, says that he came forth from that fortress "initiated in the mysteries and filled with the Spirit of God." Afterwards, because of the press of the faithful, who deprived him of his solitude, he was enlightened by God to journey with certain Bedouins, until he came to a mountain in the desert near the Red Sea, where he passed the remaining part of his life. Saint Athanasius says of him that "his countenance had a great and wonderful grace. This gift also he had from the Saviour. For if he were present in a great company of monks, and any one who did not know him previously wished to see him, immediately coming forward he passed by the rest, and hurried to Anthony, as though attracted by his appearance. Yet neither in height nor breadth was he conspicuous above others, but in the serenity of his manner and the purity of his soul." So Passing his life, and becoming an example of virtue and a rule for monastics, he reposed on January 17 in the year 356, having lived altogether some 105 years. We have started renovations on Father Lou’s office and we have cleaned up the back of the church by fencing in the garbage area. We do hope to do more but it will be a slow process. You will see more during the year. Christmas Eve service was beautiful, the church was filled and our choir sounded wonderful singing all of our traditional Christmas Carols. I also would like to once again thank everyone for supporting the star program as the tree had so many gifts under it, we should all feel wonderful knowing that we helped make these families happy on Christmas. Thank you to Flo and John Ioannou for organizing the Midnight Run once again. On December 30th in the bitter cold 18 of us (6 adults and 12 teenagers) went to NYC to feed and cloth the homeless of NYC in a school bus. We gave them coats, socks, sweaters, sandwiches, apples, hot chocolate and soup etc.. This is the 4th year I have done this with the GOYAns and I can tell you going on this Run puts life into perspective. When we are cold at home we turn up the heat, what do these people do? These men and women, some of whom have jobs but just cannot afford housing, are so appreciative that we came all the way from Long Island to help them. The most touching part of the night was that almost all of them told us their name and asked us to pray **As of the printing of this issue, Steve Margarites was refor them. elected as Parish Council President. This is such a great cause that Georgia Kaitery, Father Lou and others have organized our YAL ( 18-28 yr. olds) to do Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Kala Christougenna kai Eftihes Ton Neon Etos!! It is hard to believe that we are here once again, at the end of the old year and the new year just around the corner. This past year has been a busy and fulfilling one in the choir world, and the new year looks to be following the same path. There were many exciting musical events in 2014, and there are many more planned for 2015. One such event was the concert, "In Praise of St, Nicholas", sponsored by the Axion Estin Foundation in conjunction with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presented on Saturday, December 6th at The Cloisters Museum. A Byzantine and Latin Chant Concert, where east met west, "the world renowned ENSEMBLE ORGANUM directed by Marcel Peres met virtuoso chanter Christos Chalkias of Thessaloniki in a rare juxtaposition of Greek Byzantine and Latin chant". The silence of the audience in the chapel where it was held attested to the acoustical beauty of the chanting. One example of the juxtaposition was when the chant alternated between east and west: tion Scholarship that Ariana was granted for the third year in a row. Talented Ariana competed at Syracuse's Civic Morning Musicals and won The Opera Club of Syracuse Award. Ariana was also cast as the understudy of the role of Elena in Opera Ithaca's spring production of "Il Sogno". Next, President Anna presented very surprised choir member Georgia Stavros with an award recognizing Georgia for her 60+ years as a choir member. The talented Georgia has worn many hats as a choir member: an ability to sing in any voice needed, as an organist, and as a Federation board member, all the while ready and willing to help whenever and wherever needed. In Fr. Lou's words, examples of gifts that are shared with others for the Glory of God! Noteworthy: DAD President Anna Dounelis announced that "during our Annual Conference Meeting and by the unanimous vote of the representatives, our Federation Scholarship was renamed The Demetrios C. Pappas Educational Scholarship in honor of his many contribuAgios O Theos, Sanctus Deus tions to our Liturgical MuAgios Ischiros, Sanctus Fortis sic in America". Of course we can't forget the children of St. Paraskevi who put on their annual Christmas Pageant. It's always a wonder to hear their angelic voices, both musical and spoken, and hopefully our future choir members. It was also wonderful to see that they were accompanied on the keyboard by one of their peers. Perhaps a future organist too?? Sunday, December 21st, the Annual Choir Christmas party took place. Hosted by choir member Elaine Champey, it was a time of good fun, good food, good conversation, and, of course, good music. Everyone enjoyed singing Christmas carols/songs, accompanied on the piano by Elaine herself. We were also treated to a few solos by Elaine's brother, choir member George Strum, who has a talented voice, and by Elaine, too, with her lovely soprano voice. Everyone left happily looking forward to next year's gathering from now!! In other choir news, choir member Andrew Warren performed as the timpanist in the Symphonic Band in the Suffolk County NYSCAME concert. Andrew was just cast as Maurice in Northport High School's production of "Beauty and the Beast". Congratulations to choir member Michael LaSorsa's mom who celebrated her 95th birthday. Perastika to Georgia Stavros and Michael LaSorsa's mother. 2014 has been a very busy and productive year, and we are now looking forward to many more interesting and inspiring choir events in the new year. Many thanks to Fr. Lou and Maria Angel for their continued help and support. We, along with National Forum Chairman Maria Keritsis and DAD President Anna Dounelis, wish you all a Blessed Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year. Stay well and see you on Sunday!! HAPPY NEW YEAR! The sun is shining, the snow is glistening and the new year is upon us! We are celebrating the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ and our children are learning how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were all together in one place, at one time. Our Christmas Pageant was a beautiful success and showed us so wonderfully the glory of our Lord God and Savior's birth. The children were such a joy to work with! We hope you enjoyed it. Your Sunday School Co-Directors & Board The Ladies Philoptochos Christmas party was held at Cinque Terra on December 11, 2014. It has been our tradition to adopt a local charity. This year we chose the Huntington Helping Hand Mission. The Mission is not funded by any government agency and relies solely on monetary donations to accomplish special programs for the many needy children in the town of Huntington. Our Philoptochos's mission was to purchase pajamas and socks for 52 children whose names and sizes were given to us by the directors. Due to the generosity of our Philoptochos's Sisters we were also able to present the Mission with a monetary donation as well which is greatly needed and will be greatly appreciated. Happy New Year to all! We are blessed to be able to visit the numerous facilities local to St. Paraskevi during the Christmas season. Father Lou administered communion and prayed with the Orthodox residents. Our care ministry volunteers brought cheer to the residents by spending some time with them, which is the greatest gift of all. The Arettines family entertained the residents and families with their wonderful Christmas show. This month we will be going to the facilities blessing the rooms. We always look forward to having more volunteers to be a part of this rewarding ministry. A few minutes spent with our spiritual brothers and sisters, is a wonderful gift to give ourselves. We enjoyed the camaraderie of Father Lou and Presbytera Tammy, the beautiful Christmas ambience, the delicious foods, the excellent service, and Santa's surprise visit. COMMACK, N.Y. – Folktale has always been author Agathi Sibos Mitsinikos’s favorite genre. In “Gorgeous George: The Proud Rooster” (published by Xlibris), she presents such a tale to tell an interesting story while also teaching children a lesson. Gorgeous George is as proud as a rooster can be. He really likes to show off his long colorful feathers. But looking good is not all there is to being good and, in the end, George realizes the value of being humble with him saying, “It all happened because I was too proud of myself. Next time, I will never leave the house again and go on a hill to show off my beautiful feathers. I learned my lesson the hard way.” Humility is one of the primary virtues. In “Gorgeous George: The Proud Rooster,” Mitsinikos is able to present it in an easy to read and relatable story that is meant to help children realize the value of this virtue. The sound that George the rooster makes is not typically associated with a rooster as children know it from other stories like, cock a doodle doo. This rooster makes a more realistic, unique sound. This book not only can be read by families for pleasure, but it can also be utilized by teachers within a classroom setting to teach skills such as story elements, sequencing, summarizing, and use of dialogue. “Gorgeous George: The Proud Rooster” By Agathi Sibos Mitsinikos Softcover | 8.5 x 8.5in | 24 pages | ISBN 9781503511002 E-Book | 24 pages | ISBN 9781503511019 Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble h p://bookstore.xlibris.com/Products/SKU-000966896/Gorgeous-George-The-Proud-Rooster.aspx Twi er Agathi Mitsinikos @agathimits About the Author Agathi Sibos Mitsinikos lives in Long Island, N.Y. with her husband and two sons.
