FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends
Season of Advent
With Christmas just around the corner, we might be too busy to give attention to what we are
actually commemorating. Those who live ‘by the cash register’ will do everything they can to keep
our attention on our wallets and purses. The Three Wise Men seem to have had the true
understanding of the Christmas event. They spent many weeks in anticipation as they travelled
from their homeland to Bethlehem. When they arrived, their purpose was to honour the newborn
child and out of courtesy they brought one gift each.
We, too, have the opportunity for a period of anticipation in the Season of Advent. Of course,
Advent is a constant season for, within our own lives, we are continuously waiting to become, to
discover, to complete and to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectations, are all part of our Advent
experience. God does not come to us from the sky; he comes to us in the daily story of our lives in
people, places and events.
Advent invites us to prepare for the commemoration of God’s coming by taking time to have a
closer look inside ourselves away from the busy outside. This looking inside is not about remorse
or regret, nor about listing ways life over the past year could have been different; it’s not about
wishing we were better people. It’s about forward movement, getting new bearings, relying more on
God for directions. It’s about a fresh start, getting closer to the “fire” and the “light” that are God’s
love and compassion. Then ‘The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your
hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ St Paul. Phil. 4:7
Thank you
As this will be the final Parent Bulletin for the year I take this opportunity to thank all families for
your continued support throughout 2014. We have greatly appreciated all parents who have
volunteered and helped in so many ways this year. I thank the School Board, Parents & Friends and
the Parent Engagement Group for their unwavering enthusiasm for our school and hard work all
year. To all parents who have helped in the classroom, attended excursions, worked in the canteen,
coached or managed a sports team we say thank you. To show our appreciation all parents are
invited to special morning tea on Monday 8 December from 8.45am - 9.30am in the Hall. I hope
you will be able to join us.
Next week we say goodbye to our Year 7s with a Graduation Mass and supper on Tuesday 9
December at 7pm. I particularly want to acknowledge the families who will be leaving St Joseph’s
as this is the last child to complete their schooling with us. We thank and farewell the following
families: Bibbo, Carosi, Cavuoto, Cianfaglione, Costanzo, De Ieso, De Palma, Fazzini, Flaherty,
Ho, Kallas, Kousa, Lelli, Lucarelli, Lupone, Maida, Maidh, Maio, Maronese, McAuliffe, Meccariello,
Michels, Pace, Palombi, Perugini, Piscioneri, Sam, Scarfo, Simeone, Singh, Spegnetto, Su, Taban,
Tiscione, Tronnolone, Tsakrios, Varacalli, Whitehead and Ziada.
Building project
Tomorrow we expect the fencing to be erected to begin work on the transportables. These rooms
will be redesigned to accommodate our Year 6 and Year 7 students next year. We are also very busy
this week clearing both the Reception and Year 1 Units in readiness for them to be refurbished
during the Christmas break. This will include painting, new joinery in the wet areas, acoustic
walling and carpet. New furniture will also be ordered for these classrooms and will be delivered in
Term 1.
Teaching Staff 2015
Yesterday the children met their teacher and classmates for 2015. This is an exciting time for
everyone and we look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday 22 January when you can meet and
discuss the goals for your child. Finally we congratulate Ms Anita Baldino (Year 6) who will move
to a permanent teaching position at St Paul’s College next year.
I wish every family many blessings this Christmas and for the New Year.
With best wishes Ms Leanne Carr
Principal
FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
With this being the last Parent Bulletin for this year, I just wanted to thank you all for the last two
terms. It has been fantastic joining a community half way through the year and feeling very
welcome. I am also excited about continuing this journey next year and I look forward to working
with the students, families, staff and wider community.
As we approach a new school year, students can become nervous about joining new classes and
transitioning into different areas of the school. It was wonderful to see them do this so well
yesterday and from accounts from the teachers the students were open and bright and looking
forward to a new start in 2015.
I hope you all have a blessed and relaxing Christmas and New Year. I pray that your families may
experience the anticipation and joy that is associated with the Advent season and that with
Christmas you experience Jesus’ presence in your homes. All the very best and we’ll see you in
2015!
Warm regards, David Hillard

WELLBEING
Fears and worries
Children get scared for all sorts of reasons. Some fears are very common in children of certain ages. Very young children are
often afraid of imaginary things like monsters hiding under the bed. Older children usually fear real things that might
happen, like being hurt. Children with reassurance and support can learn to manage fear and worries on their own.
Included in this Parent Bulletin is a KidsMatter information sheet to learn more about helping children to manage their fears
and worries. Further information can be found at:

A message from Tess Harford
Dear Families
Even though I haven’t been at SJH for the past two terms, I do think of you all often and I even drive by now and then to
look at the school! As you know I was seconded in Term Three to support and mentor the staff at Nazareth Catholic
College Early Childhood Centre (ECC). It has been a very hectic six months, we have children from six months to five and a
half years old – 100 hundred children a day and about 200 over the week – we are busy! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time,
learning a lot, being challenged daily and needing to deepen my understanding on the government’s child care initiatives and
expectations.
As I am sure Leanne has informed you by now, I have been asked to be the Director of the ECC for 2015. I am looking
forward continuing my experience. It is never an easy decision to make when being asked to take on another role in another
setting. My passion and loyalty to you all, made it even more difficult. At this time I believe that God is calling me to do
something different. If you are ever in Findon, please feel free to drop in – I’d love to show you around!
I hope to make it to a few of the SJH end of year functions, so we might get to have a chat. If we don’t see each other, I
wish you a happy and holy Christmas, may it be full of people and things that bring you great joy.
Keep smiling
Tess Harford
PE NEWS
PE WEEK
In Week 6 the school celebrated PE Week which gave students an opportunity to reflect on the importance of leading a
healthy active lifestyle. Many students participated in challenges run at recess and lunch which allowed classes to test their
sporting skills in a fun and competitive environment. The morning health hustle was a great success with individual classes
doing a great job in leading the school through a fitness routine. Thanks to all the classes and parents who came out to
participate.

OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS SPORT
We would like to congratulate all the Out Of School Hours Sport students who have represented our school in a positive
way by showing sportsmanship and fair play, as is expected by all our sports teams representing St Joseph’s School
Hectorville.
A huge thank you to the following parents who had taken on coaching and or training positions for our Out Of School
Hours Sport teams, without this sort of commitment and support we would not be able to have such a successful program
in our school.

CRICKET
SJH 4/5 Junior. SJH had a great game against Pedare College on Saturday. We started off the
game with a minute silence in memory of Phillip Hughes and both teams wore black arm
bands for respect. We have our last game this Saturday (6 December) against St Augustine’s
Parish. We would like to thank our team for all their efforts this term. A big thank you to all
the parents who have helped at games or have come along to support our team.

As the year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful community for all of your help
and support throughout the year. Thank you to all the students and their families who have volunteered throughout the year
(there are too many to name) and to the wonderful staff/teachers for all your help and support. It is greatly appreciated.
I would also like to thank the wonderful committee for your support, time and commitment. Without you all we would not
have been so successful in our fund raising.
I hope you all have a very happy and safe break and an incredible Christmas and New Year.
