Heya,
Where back!! Yes I know it has been awhile since the last newsletter so there
will be heaps of goss AWAHS has been doing in this edition especially for you!.
Firstly we hope you had a Happy NAIDOC week!! I know the Albury Wodonga
community had plenty to do during NAIDOC week and was filled with a lot of
great activities for everyone to be involved in.
AWAHS event was held on Monday 2nd of July and had about 150 people
attend. We saw plenty of smiling faces and the longest line up for the good
tucker. The deadly vegie garden and yarn up
circle was also officially opened for the community. (see page 8-9).
It was good to see the community coming to
programs and events though we would rather
stay at home in our warm cozy beds with hot
chocolate. Well for some people, but definitely not the participants that have entered into
the NSW State Weight Loss Knockout ChalSiblings Colin Young and
lenge. The Albury Mixed Salad team have to
Patricia Brailey enjoy the
Sorry Day Dinner
get working to lose weight to win $70,000 for
that
was held this year
our community. (see page 4).
Not to mention that Christine Anu will be perfoming LIVE at AWAHS for the
community this Friday 20th of July. (see page 12)
But the stars are getting very local here in Albury as we will be seeing our
own mob on the big screen “The Sapphires” at Albury Regent Cinemas next
month. Four hundred and fifty tickets have been given out to community to
preview this new film also featuring Jessica Mauboy and Deborah Mailman.
(see page 13)
If you would like to see your programs, stories, pictures/paintings, poems or
local news published in the AWAHS newsletter please contact:

Tucker Tip #11
Some new information has come out about the effect of soft drinks on our weight. A university in America
did a study to look at what would happen if people cut out soft drinks from their diet, and chose to drink diet
or zero drinks, or water instead. In 6 months, the people that make this change lost 2 to 3kgs, and 2cms off
their waist. So it is definitely a quick, affordable, and easy change that will help you lose weight. Without
making the change, the people would have most probably gained weight.
Winter is a great time to make a change like this, as we can start changing our habits before the heat
of summer makes us desperate to quench our thirst regardless of the consequences.
If you would like further advice about how to be healthy from eating good food, you can come and see the
AWAHS Dietitian Susie Summons. For an appointment, ask your Doctor or call 6040 1200. Try this beef,
veggie and barley soup recipe to warm you up from the inside.

Life Smiles Program
Life Smiles for Koori Kids is a Dental program run at the Primary School ‘s in Albury.
This is a great opportunity for the Koori Kids to get Dental checkups
and to see if they need dental treatment.
The program consists of 3 stages:
1: Teach the kids the proper way to brush their teeth with Ben at AWAHS.
2: Kids go with Ben and Koori Liason worker at school or Aboriginal
Health Worker to Albury Community Health (ACH) to get a checkup with
dentist.
3: If the dentist thinks your child needs treatment (for example: fillings or a
tooth pulled out), Ben will arrange transport if needed for parents or
guardians to come with their child/children to ACH for treatment.
“DID YOU KNOW THAT IF YOUR CHILD’S HAS HOLES IN THEIR TEETH
OR MISSING TEETH IT COULD CAUS SPEECH AND BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS
AND OR LEARNING DIFFICULTIES? “
Tooth be told by Ben the Tooth Fairy!
The program is run during school hour’s with transport and lunch provided.
It is important to check your child/children bags as they may have a letter from AWAHS about the program.
This form needs to be signed and returned to their school
if you want your child/children to take part in this great program.

Kick the Habit
PRIZES to be WON!!!!!!
Kick the Habit Phase 2 is happening soon………..
AWAHS and AH&MRC will be conducting surveys from
th
30
, 31st of July and 1st Aug 2012….
This time we are using an electronic tablet with
SurveyMonkey program.
We want to survey 100 Aboriginal people
over the age of 16- both smokers and non-smokers.
The survey
respondents will be
community members from
Albury/Wodonga and clients of
the AWAHS but we do not have to survey them at AWAHS.
We could go to meetings or sports practice or community events or
visit other Aboriginal organisations.
Our goal is to find out if people in the community are aware of options to get support to stop smoking and if they know about any
health campaigns
for Aboriginal people about stopping smoking.

NAIDOC Week
National Aboriginal & Islander Day
of Celebration
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history,
culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year it was
held 1st-8th of July 2012. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by
Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to
support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
community.
NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was
once responsible for organising national activities during
NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the
name of the week itself.
Each year, a different city hosts the National NAIDOC
Awards Ceremony and Ball. The host city, National NAIDOC
Poster Competition and the NAIDOC Awards winners are
selected by the National NAIDOC Committee.
Local community celebrations during NAIDOC Week are encouraged and often organised by communities, government agencies, local councils, schools and workplaces.
To contact Albury Wodonga NAIDOC committee please
phone Ruth Davys on 6041 9666.
