Location
Albury-Wodonga has always been a meeting place of
two cities and two states, across the mighty Murray
River. Today that proud historic duality has made
it a special place with heritage charm and modern
sophistication in equal measure.
Albury-Wodonga sits at the centre of the Melbourne–
Sydney–Canberra triangle and at the foothills of
the Great Dividing Range. The cities are located on
the majestic Murray River which forms the border
between NSW and Victoria. The region is surrounded
by rich agricultural valleys with nearby snow fields,
world class wineries, historic towns and villages,
making it a great place to live or visit.
The Albury-Wodonga region is also a major hub
for transport, retail and employment, with a rich
restaurant and cafe culture. Added to this, the broader
region is renowned for its incredible range of fresh and
gourmet food production, combined with the stunning
wine regions of Rutherglen, King Valley and Milawa.
There is also an exciting range of boutique breweries
to tempt the tastebuds of event participants and
attendees.

Transport
One of Albury-Wodonga’s strengths as an event
destination is its ease of access.
There are also extensive coach and train services
between Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga, Canberra and
Sydney, as well as many other regional centres.
Albury Airport is located just 10 minutes from the
Albury CBD and 15 minutes from Wodonga CBD.
It is the third busiest airport in regional NSW, with
more than 250,000 passengers passing through the
terminal each year and over 180 flights a week in and
out of the city.
Albury-Wodonga is strategically located about three
hours north of Melbourne and six hours south of
Sydney on the Hume Freeway. Canberra is also only
3.5 hours drive away.
Services to Sydney are provided by Qantaslink,
Regional Express and Virgin Blue Airlines. Regional

“On behalf of Melbourne Heart FC, I would
like to thank Albury for hosting our Hyundai
A-League match against Perth Glory last
Sunday. To say we were blown away by the
city’s support is an understatement. From
our arrival on the border to our departure, the
players, staff and volunteers were welcomed
with open arms and friendly smiles.”
Harry Kewell, Captain - Melbourne Heart FC
“It was a great week thoroughly enjoyed by the
270 participants. The venues were outstanding
- the best we’ve had in the 10 years of the
competition. I compliment all the staff involved
from Wodonga Council. Thanks for your
co-operation and support in the running of the
event. It was very much appreciated.”

SPORTING FACILITIES AND
INFRASTRUCTURE
The Albury-Wodonga region is unique in that it
straddles the border of Victoria and NSW. The
two councils share both sporting infrastructure
and facilities. The primary benefit is the ability to
draw on and utilise a larger amount of resources
including human, financial, modern infrastructure and
equipment. The cities boast modern sporting amenities
to rival most capital cities and familiarisation tours of
the facilities are available upon request.
Albury-Wodonga has top-class sporting facilities
including Australia’s largest regional tennis complex, a
state-of-the-art outdoor pool, sports and leisure centre
with heated indoor pools, gymnasium, sports courts,
and aerobic and exercise facilities, high standard
hockey, cricket, football, soccer, bowls, softball,
an accredited athletics track with electronic timing,
baseball facilities, championship golf courses and
water skiing, sailing and fishing at Lake Hume.
One of Albury-Wodonga’s strengths as an event
destination is the close proximity of all sporting
venues. An athlete or spectator can drive from one
side of the city to the other in a matter of 10 minutes,
with many of the proposed sporting facilities actually
within walking distance of each other. In addition,
many of the region’s modern sporting venues can
accommodate multiple sports. For example, a number
of venues can host cricket, netball and tennis while
the main stadiums can host basketball, netball and
volleyball.
As an example, the region hosted the Southern
Uni Games in July 2014 that saw around 2000
competitors descend on the region for four days
and compete in 16 different sports. The event was a
resounding success.
