Meet and drink at the best goth pubs in town (try them both!) Thursday 3rd November SOPHIE LANCASTER FOUNDATION CHARITY NIGHT 8pm-2am at RAW Nightclub (Wellington Road, off Baxtergate) £5.00 Entry - DJ's martin oldgoth, Ben & Loki play a mix of dark alternative tunes to kick start the party! Once again battle will take place on the baize for the honour of being crowned WGW Pool Champion and the first prize of... a box of JAFFA CAKES! Tickets available in advance from the WGW Info Stall. NOSTALGIA 9pm-3am at RAW Nightclub (Wellington Road, off Baxtergate). No industrial, no metal, no ebm, it's a Goth night... feat. DJ's martinoldgoth, Velouria & Dave Exile - 'dark/goth' dress code. £5.00 entry in advance (available from the WGW Info Stall) or £6.00 on the door. Monday 7th November WHITBY KUSTOM CAR SHOW 10am-4pm in the grounds of West Cliff Primary School (opposite the Leisure Centre). The Kustom Car show returns better then ever - free entry! RECOLLECTION 8pm-2am at RAW Nightclub (Wellington Road, off Baxtergate). DJ's martinoldgoth, Ben & Disco Dolly with playlists leaning more towards the long lost side of the eighties, focusing on the decade that brought us post punk, new romantic and goth but stretching either side of it to include new wave and indie classics. £5.00 entry in advance (available from the WGW Info Stall) or £6.00 on the door. FORUM MEET UP (PROVISIONAL) 2pm at The Little Angel - Free entry ;-) All details correct at time of going to print Please note (provisional) means that the full details of an event are as yet to be finalised BOOK SIGNING 1pm to 2pm upstairs at the Res, 1 Skinner Street, Whitby. For more information or to check availability, please visit the WGW Info Stall in the Spa Foyer or call 07970 704702. 3 WGW NOV 2011 main spa Berlin Black Featuring several known faces of the UK scene, Berlin Black is the brainchild of Chris Tuke, formerly of Screaming Banshee Aircrew. Formed in 2008 and mixing elements of glam, new wave, post punk and just the right amount of sleaze to create that 'trash vogue' sound. Cryogenica Cryogenica is a London-based, electro-rock band formed in 2006 whose music has been compared to ‘Curve, Siouxsie and the Banshees & Nine Inch Nails’. Comprising of: Carina - vocals and keyboards, Jon - guitar, keyboards and samples, and Scott – guitar, they have adopted a guitar-centred approach towards electronic music production and performance. Using Ableton Live sample based software run from a laptop to trigger samples, drum loops and bass synths, they aim to provide a full sonic experience to their live shows by mixing ambient samples using Ableton’s Live FX in between songs during their live sets. Devilish Presley Devilish Presley was formed as a two-piece by Jacqui Vixen and Johnny Navarro in 2003 and were soon adopted by the UK Goth scene with their albums Rust Garden and Disgraceland – but they very quickly widened their appeal. Johnny was chosen as back-up guitar player by Meteors frontman P. Paul Fenech and toured Europe with him on a number of solo dates. It was the band’s unique ability to cross over between genres that helped create their critically acclaimed albums and saw them become the support act on nineteen dates with The Damned in 2008. The Mist Of Avalon Founded as a classic Goth rock band back in the 90s, The Mist Of Avalon have built up quite a reputation during the last 15 years successfully casting off any genre bonds, though of course a lot of original Goth elements are still there. Singer Aram Yildiz’s flexible voice is capable of mastering both dark, screaming and very melodious parts, and supported by subtly applied female background vocals on their recordings, songs like ‘I Wish’ grow into energetic indie wave pop hymns which show similarities to bands like A-Ha or the Chameleons. Their most recent album ‘Dinya’ offers soulful, driving and fresh indie wave rock with an undertone of a deep and sometimes gloomy melancholy far away from any artificial depression. Abney Park 4 Abney Park (who take their name from Abney Park Cemetery in London) is a band based in Seattle that mixes elements of industrial dance, world music, and Steampunk in their work. Formerly a Goth band, Abney Park has transformed their look and sound and has come to be known by many as the ‘quintessential’ Steampunk band. In early 2006, Abney Park transformed themselves from a largely Goth industrial band into a Steampunk band, and as part of that transformation, Abney Park invented fictional identities of themselves. Since Steampunk is largely derived from science fiction and fantasy literature, the band also created a fictional back-story to explain the shake-up in membership and who they were now, and to set a stage for their new music. According to that story, the band's plane collided with a time-travelling dirigible called the Ophelia in a freak storm. The band commandeered the vessel, deciding to become airship pirates, and formed a new band from the surviving members of the crash. Much of their music since that time has been based around this fictional back-story. event - BAND biographies The Death Notes The Death Notes are a female fronted alternative rock band from Nottingham, England. The bands first release was a self titled 5 track EP on Sonic Disruptor Records released in October 2009. ‘Sweeping the Nation’ described the bands sound as ‘Siouxsie Sioux fronting the Horrors’ elsewhere the bands sound has been compared with Joy Division, The Pixies, Sonic Youth and Warpaint. The Dark Shadows Having just released their new single, 'Written In The Snow', The Dark Shadows will soon be launching a new EP, '11:11' at Whitby Goth Weekend. After the haunting atmospherics of the 'Invisible' EP, '11:11' sees the band develop this theme and explore a fresh, sharp edged new sound, combined with post-punk noir wave. Rhombus Rhombus are one of the finest Goth Rock bands to emerge from the North of England in many years. Mixing male and female vocals with swirling guitars and driving bass, they combine some of the best elements of traditional 80s & 90s UK Goth, with a more modern approach. Their songs are well crafted and catchy, possessing both depth and a sharp sense of humour. Voltaire Voltaire is often described as a modern day renaissance man. As a musician, he is a songwriter whose music can best be described as a collection of murder ballads, tongue-in-cheek exercises in the macabre, with just enough bawdy songs about Star Trek and Star Wars to keep a convention audience rolling in the aisles. Voltaire's live shows, whether solo or with his skeletal orchestra, are full of stories and games. Many describe his shows as sitting around a fire while an old friend regales you with tales, presuming that old friend drinks a litre of rum a night, dates zombie prostitutes and wrestles Krakens. Voltaire has been recording and touring for over 15 years. He's released 8 full length CDs, most of them through Projekt Records. Chameleons Vox The Chameleons are arguably the most widely influential guitar band ever to come out of Manchester, England, and Chameleons Vox is the continuation of the band featuring vocalist and principle composer Mark Burgess and drummer John Lever. The band released their first album 'Script of the Bridge’ in 1983, following their debut single ‘In Shreds’ and several radio sessions for the BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. The album is considered by a great many to be a masterpiece, and songs from that and later albums form the basis of their set. They are now reaching a whole new generation of fans to swell the considerable loyal following that the band has established, and over the last two years have played sell out concerts in the UK, Germany, Holland, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
