FROM THE DIRECTOR
WHY ART?
We are constantly bombarded with worry and concerns about the skills needed for the 21st
century – particularly in the workforce. Business leaders say they are looking for creative
thinkers and innovators. Studies show that our students are lagging behind other countries.
Our prisons are filled with drug offenders, our veterans are returning from war emotionally
wounded and many citizens are stuck in a cycle of poverty they cannot seem to rise above.
As school boards and universities deal with funding cuts, the arts seem to be the first to go.
As our congress deals with budgets, once again the arts are the first to get cut because
they are deemed not necessary.
I say the arts are necessary. The ability to create is what makes us human. To deny access
and participation in the arts is to destine us to become less human – which is what we are
witnessing today. The arts teach us many skills that could help to remedy some of the ills
of society we suffer from. Having worked in the arts most of my life, I have been witness
to the power of art: the power to lift up a student
that has not been nurtured at home; the power
to allow an unsuccessful student find a path to
achievement; the power of transcendence for
someone who battles addictions; the power to
envision a future for those who can see no way
out of their situation; the power of healing for
those who battle with mental health; the power
of imagination to drive invention and innovation;
the power that comes from mastering a
discipline.
Catherine M. Pears
Executive Director
As we examine the question “WHY ART?” over
the coming year, we will present information that
I hope you will take to heart. The exhibitions
at AMoA this winter explore the power of art
to uplift a culture, to honor an important religious leader, to inspire artists to explore a
medium, and the power of an art form to be an economic driver in a community. I invite you
to join us in investing in the power of art.

COMING THIS SPRING
March 7 – May 24
Dueling Visions of Liberty:
Depictions of the American Civil War
Dueling Visions of Liberty: Depictions of the American Civil War presents the
diverse political, regional, and racial viewpoints expressed during the American
Civil War through art. The exhibit will feature a variety of artistic medium including
contemporary paintings, lithographs from news journals, sculptures, photographs,
and other period artifacts to represent the viewpoints of those who fought,
stayed behind to defend their homes, and those that were neutral witnesses to
the conflict. This diversity of mediums also represents the evolution of artistic
expression and development in the United States during the 1860s.
Theo Tobiasse: Textural Emergence
This selection of works from the permanent collection
represents the later years of this Holocaust survivor’s
prolific and innovative career. Tobiasse’s work influenced
by surrealism, expressionism and modern primitivism
explored themes of mythology, biblical stories, exile and
his own past combined to present rich metaphors for the
20th century. His mix of techniques and mediums brings
a richness and colorful emotional quality to these later
works.
AMoA presents this exhibition as part of our nation’s
April 2014 Days of Remembrance Commemoration
of the Holocaust, and in conjunction with our own
community’s Holocaust observance activities. Theo
Tobiasse spent two terrifying years in hiding with his
Theo Tobiasse, Shavout (1 of 4 prints from the suite)
family in Paris during his teenage years. He spent most
of his time reading and drawing. After the war, armed
with a portfolio of drawings, he began his artistic career as a graphic designer and painted at night. By 1969
he was able to devote all of his time to painting. The works in this exhibition are Carborundums, Aquatints and
Lithographs from the 1980s.

at the Southeastern Museum
Conference (SEMC), held in
Savannah, GA, October 7-9, 2013.
The exhibition “Immersive Space,” was on view at the
Museum March 1 through May 11, 2013. The exhibition
consisted of three Louisiana artists – Shawn Hall, Lee
Deigaard, and Natchitoches-native Colin O’Con – and
created entire room installations to explore elements
of created space and invite contemplation about our

Remembering George Rodrigue
AMoA bids farewell
to Anne Reid
Anne Reid has been at
the Alexandria Museum of
Art since 2000 and is now
retiring. She began as an
Americacorps worker and
has served the Museum as
an art educator and curatorial
assistant ever since.
Anne has taught in classrooms throughout
Central Louisiana with AMoA’s “Art Express”
program offering hands-on art classes related
to exhibits on display at the Museum. The
lessons also include age appropriate historical
and biographical information on the artists,
style and medium. In 2009, Anne received the
Arts Awareness & Education Award from the
Arts Council of Central Louisiana for her work
with “Art Express.” She holds a Bachelor of
Fine Arts in Studio Art from Northwestern State
University. Anne has been a valued employee
and good friend. We will miss her presence.
George Rodrigue’s
visit to AMoA
in June 2011.
Beloved Louisiana artist George Rodrigue passed away on
December 14, 2013. AMoA mourns his loss, as he was a friend
and supporter of all arts in Louisiana.
He grew up in New Iberia, Louisiana, and in the late 1960s
Rodrigue began painting Louisiana landscapes, followed soon
after by family gatherings and southwest Louisiana 19th century
and early 20th century genre scenes. His paintings often include
moss-clad oak trees, common to an area of French Louisiana
known as Acadiana. In the mid-1990s Rodrigue’s Blue Dog
paintings, based on a Cajun legend called loup-garou, catapulted
him to worldwide fame.
AMoA has exhibited artwork from the George Rodrigue
Foundation for the Arts Scholarship Competition for several
years. In June 2011, Rodrigue held a lecture and workshop at the
Museum where he painted one of his famous Blue Dog works.

EDUCATOR’S GUIDE
Are you a teacher looking for new ways to
implement arts-integrated, Common Core
aligned lessons in your classroom? AMoA is
here to help with our Educators’ Guides. Each
quarter, we design a new guide bursting with
information about museum visits, exhibitions,
and artists as well as lessons that integrate
art into lessons based on Common Core
standards. To sample current and past
Educators’ Guides and related resources, visit our website at http://
themuseum.org/Education/teacherresources.aspx. If you use one of
our lessons, send us digital photos of your student’s work and we will
feature it on our website!
ART EXPRESS
ArtExpress will be on the road again in September! Schedule an
ArtExpress visit for the 2013-14 school year. ArtExpress is a wonderful
FREE learning tool for your 4th and 5th grade students. The Art
Education department at the Alexandria Museum of Art will lead the
sessions and bring all supplies needed to do a hands-on project with
your class. Each visit takes 50 minutes which includes a PowerPoint
presentation and a hands-on activity that gives the students a chance
to use what they have learned. To schedule your visit, call the Museum
at 318-443-3458.
SCHOOL TOURS
Choose AMoA for your next adventure into the world of art!
Alexandria Museum of Art would like to invite you and your students
to explore the world of art. (See TOURS section at right for details)
MEET ME AT THE MUSEUM
Meet Me at the Museum is a program in
which those suffering from the effects of
Alzheimer’s or dementia and their care
givers will participate in art viewing and
making. NYU conducted a study of a
similar
program at
the Museum
of Modern Art
in New York
City. The
study found
that many
participants
showed a
positive change in mood after tours. Some
even reported an increased desire to
socialize afterwards. We hope to provide
a warm, safe, and inviting environment
where people affected by dementia and
Alzheimer’s can come and experience art
in a way that is both emotionally rewarding
and intellectually stimulating.
GROUP TOURS
Groups of 10 or more receive discounted
admission and may request guided tours
of the exhibitions. Please schedule tours in
advance. Call for more information.
SCHOOL TOURS
Choose AMoA for your next adventure into
the world of art! Alexandria Museum of Art
would like to invite you and your students
to explore the world of art. Children are
especially welcome to visit AMoA and
enjoy the wonders that await them in
the Museum’s galleries. Group tours are
designed to enhance your visit to the
Alexandria Museum of Art. This program
allows you to create your own adventure
that will best fit you and your students
for a fun and educational experience. To
schedule a class trip contact, the Museum

philanthropy
For some potential good news on charitable gifts and your
2013 taxes, read the paragraph below. Since the legislation
may be embedded in a larger bill, check with your
accountant, or us at the Museum will try to find out.
Legislation Introduced to Extend Charitable Giving
Deadline by Four Months
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) has introduced legislation — H.R.
3134, the Charitable Giving Extension Act — to allow
charitable gifts made through April 15 to count toward the
previous tax year. This bill is very unlikely to be enacted on
its own, but may be included in a larger tax reform package
currently under consideration by Congress.
Here are some of the ways you can donate to the AMoA.
You can check the web site at www.themuseum.org/donate
or contact Steve Farnsley at (318) 443-3458 or steve@
themuseum.org for further information.
n You can join as a Member of the Museum for as little
as $25 for a single senior, student or military personnel,
$30 for an adult, or $50 for a household. Or you can give
a membership on behalf of someone else. Of course,
membership levels in excess of that are greatly appreciated
and carry with them increasing benefits along with the basic
membership level.
n Businesses and corporations can also support the
Alexandria Museum of Art. Business Partnerships begin as
low as $250, and for a Partnership of $7,500 or more, your
business can be a sponsor of one of our major exhibits. It’s
a great way to get the word out about your business and
carries many privileges for your employees and clients,
including (at certain levels) the option of entertaining in the
Alexandria Museum of Art’s beautiful building.
n For those thinking long term, the Legacy Society
celebrates those who remember the Museum in their estate
plans or make a planned gift. There are many ways to do
this, so if you’re interested, let us know and we’ll put you in
touch with the right people.
n Short on cash but you’ve got some time to donate?
The Alexandria Museum of Art depends on its behindthe-scenes Volunteers. We need volunteers at the front
desk, on the floor with our guests, or with our many special
events.
Think over the possibilities! Visit the web site at www.
themuseum.org/donate or contact Steve Farnsley at (318)
443-3458 or [email protected] for further information.
