INTRODUCTION
Art fairs, galleries, biennials, auctions, museums - the
contemporary art scene across the Gulf has blossomed
over the past decade.
Welcome to Art Week, an Art Dubai fair LLC umbrella
initiative that includes Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai,
SIKKA, and a broad programme of cultural events taking
place across the UAE and beyond. Now in its second year,
Art Week stitches together numerous events across a
ten-day period, with the goal of celebrating the region’s
artistic production.
From March 14 - 24, Art Week 2013 will connect
institutions, commercial galleries, not-for-profit
organizations, and universities in the cities of Dubai,
Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Doha. The action-packed
programme will include one-off happenings, projects,
installations, festivals and fairs, demonstrating the
dynamism and progressive spirit at large throughout the
Gulf’s cultural scene.
This is the biggest Art Week yet, with the trio of fairs
joined by the critically acclaimed Sharjah Biennial,
returning for its 11th edition. Other highlights at Art
Week include Galleries Nights at the DIFC and Al Quoz,
the unveiling of Abraaj Group Art Prize, the Abu Dhabi
Festival, and the Global Art Forum_7, which opens
in Doha before moving to Dubai as part of the noncommercial programming at Art Dubai.
Read on for in-depth coverage of all the highlights of Art
Week 2013. With so much happening in different cities
in the region, and in some cases, at the very same time,
this is your pocket guide to the exciting art happenings of
March 2013.

ALSERKAL AVENUE
DUBAI
The global conversation
surrounding Dubai has
undergone a change in
the last few years, no
longer revolving solely
around the commercial
product of the Emirate,
but also shining a
spotlight on the cultural
output.
We are currently
witnessing the growth
of an intriguing young
art scene, built by
individuals who are
invested in the city, and
call it home. You see
it in the emergence of
Alserkal Avenue as an
art hub, with expansion
plans that will bring
new artist studios and
event venues to Al Quoz
by 2014. You see it in
the not-for-profit and
educational spaces
such as The Archive,
The Pavilion Downtown
Dubai and Traffic that
now offer a venue for
art production and art
appreciation outside of
the gallery environment.
And you see it in the
frenetic art activity that
takes place not just in
March, but throughout
the year.
Don’t take our word for it
though; read on to find out
what the city has in store for
you during Art Week 2013.
There’s no denying the
cultural impact that
Alserkal Avenue has
made on the city. What
was once an ordinary
warehouse block in
Al Quoz is now a bona
fide art district in the
midst of the industrial
wilderness of Al Quoz.
Home to over 30 creative
businesses, Alserkal has
become the destination
for contemporary art,
culture, and creative
socializing in the city.
But there are even bigger

12
and brighter things in
the pipeline. Last year,
Alserkal announced
plans for a $13.8 million
expansion, which will
bring new art spaces,
two restaurants, a coffee
shop, an events centre
and much-needed
additional parking to
the area. The art spaces
will range from 1000 to
7000 sq feet, giving new
galleries and creative
businesses the chance
to join the district,
and most importantly,
providing artists with
smaller studio spaces.

THE FARJAM COLLECTION
THE PAVILION DOWNTOWN DUBAI
Farideh Lashai
An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar | Contraband
The Farjam Collection
is one of the world’s
most comprehensive
collections of
Islamic, pre-Islamic,
International Modern,
Contemporary, and
Middle Eastern art.
During Art Week, the
Collection will present an
exhibition honoring the
Iranian artist, Farideh
Lashai. Lashai was one
of the most important
female artists in Iranian
contemporary art. Her
storied career included
25 solo exhibitions, 80
group exhibitions, and
the Neda group - a
female artist collective
that she founded in the
90s. She was also a
writer, and translated
several plays by the
famous German
playwright Berthold
Brecht. Her last novel
‘Shal Bamu’, published
a few years ago, became
a bestseller and critical
favourite in the Iranian
literary circles.
The Farjam Collection
will celebrate Lashai’s
life and work with a
selection of works drawn
from the collection. The
exhibition will act as a
tribute to an inspirational
artistic spirit who played
a pivotal role in the
artistic evolution of the
Middle East.
During Art Week,
visitors to The Pavilion
Downtown Dubai can
experience a compelling
exhibition by American
artist Taryn Simon,
featuring a selection
from two bodies of work.

‘An American Index
of the Hidden and
Unfamiliar’ is the result
of Simon’s investigation
into remote and
restricted sites, spaces,
and objects across the
USA that are integral to
America’s foundation,
mythology, or day to day
functioning but remain
inaccessible or unknown
to the public. The artist
compiled an inventory of
Untitled by Farideh Lashai

these unseen subjects
and confronts the divide
between those with and
without the privilege of
access.
In ‘Contraband’, Simon
presents images culled
from a five-day stint
at John F. Kennedy
International Airport,
spent documenting
the border between
America and the rest of
the world. The outcome
was a collection of 1075
images of over 1000
items detained or seized
from passengers and
mail entering the US.
Each item is presented
devoid of context and
transformed into an
artifact of the larger
global network, revealing
patterns of international
commerce, and exposing
both the demands that
drive the international
economy as well as the
local economies that
produce them.

ART SAWA
ARTSPACE
Bug Soldiers | The Universe and Me
A Line in the Sand
Art Sawa first launched
in 2008 with a substantial
7000 sqft space in Al
Quoz. With its recent
acquisition of an
additional space in the
DIFC Gate Village, the
gallery enjoys a presence
in two of the most
important art localities
in Dubai. During Art
Week, Art Sawa DIFC will
showcase works within
the gallery as well as in
the outdoor spaces of
the Gate Village.
Lebanese artist Zena
Assi takes over the main
gallery space with ‘Bug
Soldiers’, an exhibition of
paintings that attempts
to dig deeper into the
continued turmoil of the
Arab Spring.
Lebanese sculptor
Anachar Basbous
lays claim to the
outside spaces with 12
sculptures that continue
his fascination with pure
shapes. ‘The Universe

visitors to experience
large-scale sculptures
that will be in constant

ARTSPACE is dedicated
to the promotion of
contemporary Middle
Eastern art, with a
particular focus on art
from Iran and Turkey.
Originally founded
in 2003 in Dubai,
ARTSPACE opened
a second gallery in
London in 2012, paving
the way for continued
international interest in
Middle Eastern artists.
At Art Week 2013,
ARTSPACE will be
presenting a charged
group exhibition entitled
‘A Line in the Sand’.
Featuring some of the
region’s most exciting
young artists including
Ahmed Angawi, Musaed
Al-Hulis and Eyad
Maghazel, the exhibition
presents work that is
pushing boundaries,
and challenging the
artist’s practical and
perceived limitations.
By refusing the idea
of ‘a line in the sand’,
whether metaphorical or
psychological, the artists
aim to engage visitors in
a dialogue, and to break
the invisible barriers
between artist and
artwork, and artwork and
viewer. With continued
interest in contemporary
art from Saudi Arabia,
the exhibition is sure to
spark conversation and
debate.

AYYAM GALLERY
THE BARAKAT GALLERY
The Wrong Women
Beyond Fantasy
The first few months of
2013 have been busy
ones for the founders of
Ayyam Gallery. Khalid
and Hisham Samawi
welcomed two new
Ayyam Galleries - first
in London with an
exhibition of Nadim
Karam, and then
Jeddah with work from
Mohannad Orabi. Now
with a total of six spaces
around the world, Ayyam
Gallery has established
itself as one of the
foremost proponents
of Syrian and Middle
Eastern art.
For Art Week 2013,
the gallery in DIFC will
present new paintings
from Afshin Pirhashemi
in an exhibition
entitled ‘The Wrong
Women’. Pirhashemi’s
work examines the
complexities of life
in modern day Iran.
On sparse and often
completely white
backgrounds, his largely
monochromatic, photo
realistic depictions
of women nod to
gothic fantasy in an
exploration of issues of
contemporary social and
political identity.

specializing in classical
antiquities, Near

Byzantine, Asian, African
and Primitive arts.
During Art Week, the
gallery will present work
from gallery director
Fayez Barakat, who
in addition to being a
world-renowned dealer
and collector of ancient
art, is also a prolific
visual artist in his own
right. In a comprehensive
exhibition, the gallery will
feature key works from
his portfolio, as well as
a working studio and a

THE CARTOON ART GALLERY
Camelops Femina
Seashells Nursery: Eric Carle Recreations
Since its launch in 2008,
Carbon 12 has been
pushing international
artists on the cutting
edge of contemporary
practice. Now with over
35 exhibitions under its
belt, the Al Quoz-based
space has an impressive
new notch to look
forward to at Art Week
2013 with the Middle
East debut of Swiss
born/New York-based
Olaf Breuning.
Breuning has become
known for imagery that
sits somewhere between
the humorous and the
highly stylized; with a
richly imagined artistic
universe populated
by castaways, hobos,
cowboys, comical ghosts
and spaced-out hippies.
His exhibition at Carbon
12, entitled ‘Camelops
Femina’, conjures up
a mythical species of
camel, dressed up and
reimagined in a series
of seductive high fashion
images. Developed
specifically with Dubai
in mind, Breuning’s
fantastical and feminine
creatures invite the
viewer into his playful
world of make-believe.

‘Human Harmony’ looks
at the complicated,
and often contentious,
relationships between
society, state and
religion. Hussein’s
canvases depict scenes
of celebration and
worship - kings robed in
indigo, bejeweled heads,
wisps of incense over
a merry congregation.
It’s as if each of the
brush strokes call out
in unison, “Love live the

at Art Basel last year
- as one of just two
Dubai-based galleries
to show at the fair Green Art Gallery will
be presenting new work
from Palestinian artist
Shadi Habib Allah during
Art Week 2013.
Habib Allah’s practice
traverses installation,
video, and sculpture, in
order to examine the
structural and material
operations of objects,
people, histories and
the economy. Through
the subversion or
reconstruction of existing
objects, Habib Allah’s
work questions the
ideas of use and value,
and no more so than in
his new series. Centred
on an incident in 2009,
when airport security
in Tel Aviv confiscated

HUNAR GALLERY
GALLERY ISABELLE VAN DEN EYNDE
Group Exhibition
Beginning at the End
When Hunar Gallery
first opened its doors
to the public in 1998,
the gallery began its
exploration of the
values and aesthetics of
modern Middle Eastern
art, with a specific
focus on painting,
bronze, and ceramics.
Now, more than 15
years later, the gallery
continues to champion
the work of emerging
and established Arab
artists based locally
and internationally.
Located in the quiet
neighbourhood of
Rashidiya, the gallery is
spread over two floors,
with areas dedicated
to the themes of
portraiture, landscapes,
calligraphy, and abstract
art. The gallery also
dedicates a section of its
programme to educating
visitors on the role of
Middle Eastern art.

Al Sakeena Serenity Series by
Musab Al Rais
Gallery Isabelle van

internationally acclaimed
artist Idris Khan’s first
solo exhibition at the
gallery. Known for his
minimal, yet emotionally
charged photographs,
drawings, videos and
sculptures, Khan is
without question one of
the most exciting artists
of his generation.
In ‘Beginning at the
End’, Khan uses black
oil-based ink on blackscreened paper to
create drawings that
pay tribute to artists of
Al Sakeena Serenity Series by Musab Al Rais
the movement such as
Ad Reinhardt and Frank
Stella, amongst others.
Khan has also created
10 passages of writing
using transcripts from
the words of 9th century
Islamic philosophers
such as Ibn Sina, Ibn
Rushd and Al-Ghazali.
Creating different radial
formations by hand
stamping the Arabic
script, Khan directs
his practice inwards
towards a journey of
self-discovery that
attempts to describe and
explain the role of the
artist as creator of the
art. The works transcend
the essence of the
words while containing
the weight of the
metaphysical concepts
from which they were
derived.

Eternal Love
XVA will be present a
new series of work from
acclaimed Iraqi artist
Halim Al Karim during
Art Week. ‘Eternal Love’
will debut photographs
from 2010 that have
never been seen before.
The ‘Eternal Love’
series follows Al Karim’s
established photographic
technique - creating
images of human figures
that are usually largescale and intentionally
obscured. But while his
previous works have
focused on the themes
of politics, gender and
fear, ‘Eternal Love’
takes a wide-eyed, all
encompassing look at
love. While Al Karim has
certainly dealt with love
as a theme before, this
particular body of work
focuses on love that

GALLERIES NIGHT
Over the past few years,
Dubai has seen the rise
of two very different,
but equally thriving art
districts. The first, and
more established, is Al
Quoz. Originally home
to cement factories and
car workshops, in the
early 2000s the area
began to be taken over
by galleries and art
studios on the lookout
for cheap rents. Now the
area is home to Alserkal
Avenue, a bona fide art
hub, including galleries
such as Carbon 12,

and independent nonprofits like Satellite.
On the other side of

CHAPTER TITLE GOES HERE
ABU DHABI FESTIVAL
ABU DHABI
It’s no secret that Abu
Dhabi has big plans for
art and culture. The
emirate already enjoys
the cultural cachet that
comes with hosting
an annual art fair, the
international campuses
of New York University
and the Sorbonne,
and The National - the
popular daily newspaper.
But that’s not all.
Because from 2015, the
emirate will unveil one
mega-institution a year
on the Saadiyat Island
development, starting
with the Louvre and
followed by the Zayed
National Museum,
the Guggenheim, and
the groundbreaking
Zaha Hadid-designed
Performing Arts Centre.
During Art Week 2013,
the emirate will come
alive with exhibitions
throughout the city,
not to mention the
return of the annual
Abu Dhabi Festival. The
two-month cultural
festival, which opens
in March, celebrates
the work of musicians,
performers and artists
from around the world,
while also showcasing
a series of educational
and community-focused
events.

BARJEEL ART FOUNDATION
SHARJAH
Long considered the
quiet escape from
its flashier and more
widely discussed
neighbours, Sharjah
has been steadily
breaking ground with its
continued commitment
to contemporary culture.
And now, March 2013 will
arguably be the boldest,
busiest, and bravest
month for the emirate,
as it hosts a slew of art
seminars, exhibitions
and public art initiatives.
The highlight of the
Sharjah art calendar
is undoubtedly the
Sharjah Biennial 11,
which opens on March
13 with curator Yuko
Hasegawa at the helm.
The Biennial has been
going from strengthto-strength since its
first edition in 1993, and
returns this year with
a programme that is
bursting to the seams
with experimental art,
film, music, and multimedia performances.
The opening week of the
Biennial also coincides
with the March Meeting

seminar that brings
together some of the
world’s most influential
artists, institutions and
art practitioners.

RE: Orient | Investigating Modernism in the Arab World
1950s - 70s
The Barjeel Art
Foundation has been a
valuable resource in the
intellectual development
of the art scene in the
Gulf region. Rooted
with the prominent,
publicly accessible art
collection of Sultan
Sooud Al Qassemi, the
foundation has also
been fostering critical
dialogue around modern
and contemporary art
with a focus on artists
with Arab heritage.
Barjeel’s current show,
coinciding with Art
Week, is ‘RE: Orient |
Investigating Modernism
in the Arab World
1950s-70s’. The show
examines art production
within this pivotal 30year period, which for
many Arab countries
marked a period of
transition from French
and British imperialism,
providing a glimpse into
the subjective framework
within which artists were
operating. ‘RE: Orient’,
with its title that signifies
a reply or response, is a
conversation, persisting
to this day, about the
development of art in the

KATARA ART CENTER
DOHA
In 2012, Qatar made
headlines for acquiring
a Paul Cezanne painting
‘The Card Players’ for
the highest recorded
price ever paid for a work
of art. With one stroke,
the nation cemented
its position as a world
player with a world-class
collection to boot.
But Qatar’s bid to
become a cultural
and intellectual hub
is made up of more
than just high profile
acquisitions. Since 2008,
the nation has invested
heavily in numerous art
institutions including
the I.M Pei-designed
Museum of Islamic Art,
the Arab Museum of
Modern Art (Mathaf),
the Katara Cultural

addition to blockbuster

Art Dubai launches 2013 programme
Abraaj Group Art
Prize
Over the last six
years, Art Dubai has
solidified its position
not just as a platform
for local, regional and
international galleries
to present art, but also
as a supporter and
incubator of local talent.
Art Dubai’s ambitious
programme goes beyond
the days of the fair, and
extends out to satellite
events, workshops and
educational seminars
that take place
throughout the year.
The seventh edition of
Art Dubai takes place
March 20 - 23, 2013, at
Madinat Jumeirah. In
addition to the exhibition
halls, which will feature
75 galleries, the fair’s
programme will include
commissioned projects
and performances,
artists’ and curators’
residencies, educational
workshops, the unveiling
of works by the winners
of the annual Abraaj
Group Art Prize, and
the critically acclaimed
Global Art Forum.
This year also sees
the launch of Campus
Art Dubai, a six-month
series of intensive
courses for artists and
curators based in the
UAE, as well as Sheikha
Manal Little Artists, a
set of artist-conceived
projects for teenagers

Serving as the Emirate’s
dedicated Authority
for culture, arts, and
heritage, Dubai Culture,
under the Chairmanship
of His Highness Sheikh
Majid Bin Mohammed
Bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
has played an integral
role in reinforcing
Dubai’s position as
a vibrant, Arabian
metropolis that nurtures
and fosters culture and
arts in the region.
Since its inception, Dubai
Culture has announced
and supported numerous
initiatives in Dubai’s
cultural calendar,
reinforcing its mandate
to strengthen the
city’s creative fabric by
supporting the four main
disciplines of art - visual
arts, performing arts,
film and literature.
The Authority does not
only recognise talent,
but also honours patrons
that stand behind the
growth of the landscape
through the Sheikh
Mohammed Bin Rashid
Al Maktoum Patrons
of the Arts Awards,
while celebrating timehonoured art forms such
as theatre through the
Dubai Festival for Youth
Theatre.
The Authority also places
immense emphasis on
visual arts through its
dedicated contemporary
art fair, SIKKA; an array
of Outdoor Art Projects;
and via art programmes
and workshops such
as Design Road
Professional and
Artists-in-Residence.
Additionally, Dubai
Culture extends support
towards some of the
city’s initiatives such as
Design Days Dubai.
owns and manages
the eight public library
branches in the city,
while also supporting the
Emirates Airline Festival
of Literature.
Underlining the heritage
of the city through
culture and arts, Dubai
Culture launched
the Dubai Centre for
Heritage Development,
in collaboration with the
Ministry of Education,
while also marking an
annual celebration of
UAE’s heritage through
Heritage Week, held
every April.
The Authority launched
the pioneering Soul of
Dubai initiative, aimed
at providing short
filmmakers with the
opportunity to capture
the city of Dubai through
their eyes; while lending
support to the renowned
Dubai International Film
Festival and Gulf Film
Festival.

SIKKA
SIKKA
Produced by the Dubai
Culture and Arts
Authority, SIKKA is
an annual exhibition
specifically designed
to feature UAE
contemporary art
practices, initiative and
discourse through a
diversity of artistic talent
and stance, providing
opportunity to experience
homegrown creativity at
its liveliest and best, in
the heart of Dubai.
Now in its third year,
this unique, artist-
led fair-cum-festival
expands dramatically to
include 85 commissions,
featuring filmmakers,
musicians and
performing artists,
alongside visual
artists, who have
created site-specific
works that respond to
the neighbourhood’s
network of traditional
windtower houses and
sikkas (alleyways). Over
fifteen commissioned
musicians are set to
perform live throughout
the ten-day fair, in
addition to developing
an experimental album,
under the direction of
artist and producer
Kamal Musallam.
Committed to being
an incubator of
ideas, following the
overwhelming response
to SIKKA’s Open Call
and an intensive
selection process,
individual mentorship
was offered to emerging
artists throughout the
production period. The
fair’s mandate is aligned

with the development
of the non-commercial
arts sector in Dubai;
this year’s programme
features a very diverse
roster of established
and emerging artists,
many of whom are
experimenting with both
new concepts and new
media. The 2013 Jury
was chaired by Khalil
Abdulwahid, Manager
of Arts & Culture, Dubai
Culture, and Antonia
Carver, Fair Director, Art
Dubai, and comprised
Emirati veteran artists
Mohammed Kazem,
Waleed Rashid Alzaabi
and Mattar Bin Lahej.
Expanding SIKKA’s
interactive impact, a
diverse selection of
UAE-based initiatives
also have a presence at
the fair. Working across
different media, they
have taken a lead in
programming spaces
devoted to design,
animation, multimedia,
and talks, workshops
and community events
that actively seek to
engage families and new
audiences.
SIKKA 2013 has
partnered with Analog
Production, KG
Production & Events
and KMAC – K+G, and
is sponsored by Crown
Fine Art, Sound Struck,
The Music Chamber and
Yamaha.

SHARJAH BIENNIAL 11
Since its inception
in 1993, the Sharjah
Biennial has
transformed the cultural
landscape of the UAE
through its impressive
programmes featuring
exhibitions of visual
art, film, music, and
performance, alongside
seminars for artists and
art professionals and
workshops for students
and families.
This year, the Sharjah
Biennial 11 (SB11) is
presented under the
theme ‘Re:emerge,
Towards a New Cultural
Cartography’. Inspired
by the courtyard in
Islamic architecture,
Curator Yuko Hasegawa
proposes a new
cultural cartography
that reconsiders the
relationships between
the Arab world, Asia, the
Far East, through North
Africa to Latin America.
Curated by Thai
filmmaker Apichatpong
Weerasethakul, the film
programme will feature
leading figures from the
film industry, including
Steve Anker, Ali Jaafar,
and Tilda Swinton.
Lebanese sound artist
Tarek Atoui has put
together a sound
programme that will
include a series of new
commissions by more
than ten international
musicians, including
percussionists who will
perform on the roofs of
the SAF’s art spaces. The
opening of SB11 will also
mark the inauguration of
Sharjah Art Foundation’s
five new multi-functional
art spaces in the Sharjah
Heritage Area, providing
venues for Sharjah Art
Foundation’s growing
activities and the
increasing needs of its
community.
