Introduction
The public health nursing service has a central role to play in supporting families and
children. The Kilmaley New Parents Support Group is a service initiative which
has been developed by the Public Health Nurse (PHN) in order to enhance parent
support through partnership and collaboration. It provides a forum where
new parents can connect by discussing issues and challenges related to being
a new parent .It also provides opportunity to acquire information, share ideas
with other parents and time to reflect on their own process of adjusting
to parenthood. Guided discussion topics emerge based on the interest
of the parents in the group. Professionals visit periodically to address relevant
parenting topics such as physiotherapy and weaning to solids.
On an ongoing basis the value of supporting parents in introducing their babies/
children to the wonderful world of books has led us to establish links with Clare
Co. Library. Research shows that reading can help in :
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Promoting secure attachment
Supporting development of confidence and self esteem
Aiding cognitive development
Supporting the development of speech and language
Aiding socio-emotional development
Helping lay foundations of good literacy skills thus preparing the way for school
Supporting development of fine motor skills
Offering health professionals an opportunity to discuss about developing routines
As PHN’s we positively encourage the sharing of books and stories and that for
all the reasons mentioned above, remember, ‘It’s never too early to start
enjoying books with your baby’.
