PNC Center building roof.
On Aug. 30, 2014, 62 fundraisers went Over the Edge
for Hattie Larlham, rappelling 22 stories of the PNC Center
building in downtown Akron, Ohio. The event raised more
than $146,000 for people with developmental disabilities
at Hattie Larlham and generated widespread community
engagement. Each Over the Edge rappeller raised a
minimum of $1,500 to participate in the event. More than
800 donors contributed to the rappellers in support of
Hattie Larlham. Additionally, 26 organizations sponsored
the event.
“Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham has strengthened
our ties with the community,” said Hattie Larlham CEO
Dennis Allen. “It’s truly amazing to see the resources that
made this event possible.”
To make Over the Edge for Hattie Larlham possible,
the nonprofit organization collaborated with area
organizations. Cascade Plaza Associates donated the
PNC Center building, The City of Akron accommodated
the event’s street fair and the Akron General Health &
Wellness Centers offered Over the Edge fundraisers

INSIDE: Hattie’s Assembly > Hattie’s Gardens Opens at Akron Zoo > Giving Tuesday
Nov. 2014
Dear friends,
As we reflect on this past year, we have so much to be grateful for at Hattie
Larlham. Your generous support has given us the ability to expand in ways that
greatly impact the lives of people with developmental disabilities.
In April, we partnered with the Akron Zoo to turn two acres of its vacant property
into a Hattie’s Gardens. This sustainable garden makes fresh produce available
and affordable to the Akron community. It has also expanded employment for
people with developmental disabilities.
In June, Bearacade™ partnered with Hattie’s Assembly to assemble its door
safety device. The company gave our employees a chance to work on a new
project that could change emergency procedures and save lives. To date, 3,000
devices have been assembled and shipped across the US.
In August, 71 people rappelled 22 stories of the PNC Center building in
downtown Akron. Their fundraising efforts and generous donors raised more
than $146,000 for Hattie Larlham programs.
Your donations make it possible for us to fulfill our mission, giving people with
developmental disabilities the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.
We thank you for your gift, which allows us to give to the people we serve.

Hattie’s Assembly
New offices and new projects bolster
work training program for adults
with developmental disabilities.
In April 2013, Hattie Larlham introduced a new work
training program called Hattie’s Assembly. Located in Canal
Place in Akron, Ohio, Hattie’s Assembly performs production
for local businesses.
The program expanded from three employees with
developmental disabilities to 24. Hattie’s Assembly
partnered with five local organizations. In August 2014,
Hattie’s Assembly moved to a 6,000 square foot space
within Canal Place to accommodate its growing business
and employees.
“We now have adequate floor space to take on new
clients and activities,” said Hattie’s Assembly Manager
Jackie Boesinger, “which means we will be able to expand
and provide more jobs and services to people with
developmental disabilities.”
Hudson-based Bearacade™ has benefitted from this
new space. Bearacade™ invented a door control system
to protect people in lockdown situations. In May 2014, the
company partnered with Hattie’s Assembly to assemble
the product. To date, Hattie’s Assembly has shipped 3,000
Bearacade™ products to 18 states. Hattie’s Assembly
managers are responsive to Bearacade™’s fulfillment
requests.
“Hattie’s Assembly is very much an extension of our
business,” said Bearacade™ Cofounder Bill Cushwa. “The
employees show a genuine care and passion for the product
with great attention to detail. They also take pride in their
work and can tell me about the product and its importance.”
Progressive Machine Die, Inc. (PMD, Inc.) also benefits
from a partnership with Hattie’s Assembly. Based in
Macedonia, the company manufactures stamped metal parts
for a variety of industries such as conduit straps, hangers,
and other hardware items used in the electrical industry.
Hattie’s Assembly has assembled more than 1.1 million
conduit clamps for PMD, Inc.
“This is a core learning task for our employees,” explained
Boesinger. “Every participant is trained on the basic skills
and we’ve built additional vocational competencies into our
program. Employees learn quality assurance, teamwork,
leadership, self-motivation, time management and how what
they do fits into the ‘big picture.’ Our employees understand
that their work is a key component of the electrical industry.”
“Everything is going really well,” said PMD, Inc. President
Julius Feitl. “The staff and communication is good and the
turnaround is prompt. I can’t say enough of how much I
appreciate everything they’re doing for me.”

Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo
On Tues., Sept. 23, Hattie Larlham and the Akron Zoo
unveiled the new Hattie’s Gardens at a morning press
conference and an evening ribbon cutting. Located on the
Akron Zoo’s property at 389 Edgewood Avenue, Hattie’s
Gardens grows sustainable, chemical-free vegetables for
Akron and Northeast Ohio residents and Akron Zoo visitors.
Hattie’s Gardens is a Hattie Larlham work training program
for adults with developmental disabilities. The new garden
adds eight additional job trainees to Hattie’s Gardens,
which currently employs 24 people.

The supporters, partners and donors who gathered
to welcome Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo included
City of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, Summit County
Executive Russ Pry, Akron City Council Member of Ward
3 Margo Sommerville, Hattie Larlham CEO Dennis Allen,
Hattie Larlham Care Group President and Treasurer Mike
Weinhardt, Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board
Superintendent John Trunk, Akron Zoo Board of Directors
Chairman Bob Littman and Akron Zoo Board of Directors
Past Chairman Mike Stark.
“Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo is a partnership
dedicated to the health and environment of the community,”
said Hattie Larlham CEO Dennis Allen. “We’re making
healthy eating accessible and affordable to local residents
in an environmentally responsible way.”
The Akron Zoo had a similar vision to make fresh, local
food available to neighbors and visitors. The Akron Zoo
looked for an organization to turn the vacant lots it owned
into sustainable gardens to serve the community. The Akron
Zoo found its match with Hattie Larlham.
“For the last two years, our team has had the intense
desire to become part of a community,” said Hattie Larlham
HATTIE LARLHAM
Vice President of Vocational and Enterprise
Services Dotty Grexa. “We wanted to have
an urban garden in a setting where we can
provide wonderful nutritional produce right
in the neighborhood and become part of that
community. This site affords us that luxury.”
“Our visions are well aligned,” continued
Grexa. “We believe in sustainability, we believe
in chemical-free and believe in preserving the
environment. These traits together make us
really wonderful partners.”
Hattie’s Gardens produce will be available
to the community starting in May 2015 at its
farm stand on the corner of Copley Road and
Edgewood Avenue.
“Leveraging these properties has not only
created produce for sale in the middle of a
food desert,” said Akron Zoo Vice President
of Planning and Conservation Programs Doug
Piekarz, “but it’s also created an opportunity to
bring more jobs to this area to employ the clients
of Hattie Larlham and we’re incredibly proud to
be a part of that.”
A food desert is an area where affordable
and nutritious food is difficult to obtain. Hattie
Larlham and the Akron Zoo recognized the
importance of a community garden. Both
organizations met with Akron residents to
understand their needs.
“The thing I like most about community
gardens is the ability to bring people together,” said
Akron City Council Member of Ward 3 Margo Sommerville.
“I really have to commend Hattie Larlham and the Akron
Zoo, because before they did anything, they called me and
said, ‘We want to meet with the residents of the Edgewood
community, we want to get their feedback and we want to
get their ideas.’ We held this community meeting and they
[the neighbors] are truly excited.”
“To build this garden and see the fruits of this is really
a wonderful thing and a great partnership,” said City
of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, “and I want to thank
everyone involved. It’s truly another indication of a great
community we have and the collaboration that takes place
on many levels.”
Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo thanks the following
organizations for making this possible: Summit County
Developmental Disabilities Board, The PNC Financial
Services Group, the KeyBank Foundation, The Mary S. and
David C. Corbin Foundation, The Robert O. & Annamae
Orr Family Foundation and The Lehner Family Foundation,
Congresswoman Marcia Fudge, and Jeff Foster of Payto
Architects Inc.

To further their work training experience, Hattie Larlham employees
toured Visual Marking Systems, a graphic design and specialty-printing
company in Twinsburg, Ohio.
Hattie Larlham
staff tours Visual
Marking Systems
On Thurs., Sept. 18, Visual Marking Systems (VMS)
hosted a tour for Hattie Larlham employees, job coaches
and participants with developmental disabilities
to explore its Twinsburg facility. VMS is a custom
graphic design and specialty-printing company that
partnered with the nonprofit organization to enhance
Hattie Larlham’s brand, teach its participants with
developmental disabilities about printing and increase
the awareness for the Circle of Caring event.
“I originally met with VMS to discuss purchasing
printed items for Circle of Caring,” explained Hattie
Larlham Events Manager Wendy Voelker, “but
the conversation evolved into a discussion about
sponsorship, partnership and an opportunity for our
work training participants to tour the facility.”
VMS created a life-size baseball diamond floor
graphic, baseballs and replica jerseys utilizing floor
graphics, signs and other media to transform the space
into a nostalgic baseball-themed event for Bob DiBiasio,
Cleveland Indians senior vice president of public
affairs. The Circle of Caring was held Sat., Nov. 1, at The
Bertram Inn & Conference Center in Aurora. Proceeds
benefited Hattie Larlham programs for people with
developmental disabilities.
Since July, Hattie Larlham and VMS have
collaborated on a number of projects. In addition to
sponsoring the Circle of Caring, VMS printed a vehicle
wrap for Hattie’s Catering, installed roof signage for
Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo and hosted a golf
outing in August to raise funds for the nonprofit.
“At VMS, we wanted to do more for Hattie Larlham,”
said VMS Marketing Manager David Sunderman. “We
invited the staff and work training participants for a tour
so they can learn about what we do. We also learned
more about Hattie Larlham to see how VMS can better
leverage the partnership.”
“I learned about VMS from Wendy Voelker,”
explained Hattie Larlham Vice President of Vocational
and Enterprise Services Dotty Grexa. “To further their
work training experience, Wendy expressed the idea for
our participants to come in for a tour to see what the
printing world was like. They have a walk of fame for
their customers, they acknowledge their employees for
years of service and that really fits with our mission of
acknowledging our employees at Hattie Larlham.”

Gift upgrades
oxygen supply
system
Hattie Larlham to install hospitalgrade bulk oxygen supply system at the
Center for Children with Disabilities
Soon, the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with
Disabilities in Mantua, Ohio, will have a new upgraded
bulk oxygen supply system. This improvement will directly
impact the lives of the people with developmental
disabilities the organization serves.
Some of the children and young adults at the Hattie
Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities require oxygen
24 hours a day. Others rely on oxygen therapy when their
bodies are low on oxygen. Oxygen is also necessary during
an illness for some of the residents with developmental
disabilities.
8
Hattie Larlham will also need additional reserve oxygen
for the upcoming ventilator program. The organization
began to explore funding to upgrade its system. When
presented with this request, the Corinne L. Dodero
Foundation for the Arts & Sciences generously donated the
$42,180 required for the vital capital improvement.
“The Corinne L. Dodero Foundation for the Arts &
Sciences is proud to support Hattie Larlham and the
people with developmental disabilities it serves,” Lorraine
Dodero said. “The mission of our foundation is to support
health, social and human services, education, and medical
research. The fact that this new bulk oxygen supply system
will help the children and young adults with developmental
disabilities at Hattie Larlham continue to receive the best
possible care aligns with our mission and meets a very
important need for these children.”
Hattie Larlham’s new bulk oxygen supply system will
be hospital grade and will consist of a 1,500 gallon main
tank with a 260 gallon reserve tank. This second tank will
provide a larger capacity for the organization’s current and
future needs. The upgraded system will be able to maintain
eight ventilators simultaneously.
Hattie Larlham is deeply grateful for the generosity of
the Corinne L. Dodero Foundation for the Arts & Sciences
and welcomes its continued support of children and adults
with developmental disabilities.

Year-end
giving
Make a year-end gift to
Hattie Larlham without
writing a check or using a
credit card.
Transferring appreciated stocks to Hattie
Larlham can be more beneficial to you than a
cash gift. As you think about year-end giving,
consider transferring appreciated stocks,
bonds and mutual fund shares you’ve held for
more than one year. You will be able to claim
a federal income tax charitable deduction for
the full, appreciate value of the securities.
Also, you will pay no capital gains tax on the
transaction. Meaning the after-tax cost is less
than a gift of cash.
Call Hattie Larlham Annual Fund Director
Rosanne Drake at (330) 274-2272, ext. 3878,
for instructions to electronically transfer
securities from your account to Hattie
Larlham.

History of giving
Ohio Elks Association supports
Hattie Larlham and people
with developmental disabilities
for 46 years
Hattie Larlham would like to recognize the Ohio
Elks Association for its 46th year of support. The
organization has raised more than $304,000 for people
with developmental disabilities at Hattie Larlham. The
Ohio Elks Association hosts third party special events,
which include spaghetti dinners, fish fries, putt putt, car
shows and poker runs. Proceeds fund physical therapy
equipment at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children
with Disabilities in Mantua, Ohio.
The Ohio Elks Association is an organization
of 79 lodges and is part of the national Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE). Each state
association undertakes a project that addresses an
unmet community need. The Ohio Elks Association
raises funds for organizations that serve people with
cerebral palsy. The Ravenna, Ohio, Lodge #1076 is the
sponsoring lodge that submits grant requests to fund
Hattie Larlham.
“Raising funds for cerebral palsy invigorates us,” said
Past Exalted Ruler Ohio Elks Cerebral Palsy Fund Board
Treasurer Jeff Chapman. “You want to see people who
want to work with people to make a difference. We’ve
seen the enthusiasm of Hattie Larlham and feel the
organization does a good job.”
Hattie Larlham is proud to be an organization the
Ohio Elks Association supports and thanks its members
for their efforts.
You can raise funds through your social organization
too. For more information contact Hattie Larlham

Planned giving
Giving through a bequest is one of the easiest ways to support Hattie
Larlham’s mission while securing your family’s financial future. Whether
you’re 35 or 85, planning for the future is an important step you can take in
2015. Start your plan with these four steps:
1. Review your will. Don’t wait for a life-changing
event, such as an illness or death, to plan.
2. Update your list of assets and documents. You’ll
have a comprehensive overview of your current
situation to help you make thoughtful decisions.
3. Consider your beneficiaries’ circumstances.
Has a change in your family created a need for
you to change your will?
4. Visit your attorney. Consult with an attorney who
specializes in estate planning.
Taking time to review your estate plans allows you to give thoughtful
consideration to how you would like to distribute your assets based on
changing circumstances and priorities. As you take time to reflect, you may
want to consider one of the following designations:
Unrestricted bequest: This type of designation allows Hattie Larlham
to allocate your gift wherever the need is greatest. Unrestricted gifts help us
meet the needs of residents at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with
Disabilities, group and supported living homes and provide work training
and job placement services for people with developmental disabilities.
