An Invitation to Teachers, Principals and Parents
The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County invites you to enjoy this compilation of artist
residencies, assembly performances and workshops available to your school though the Artist in Schools
Matching Grant Program. If you have any questions, please call the Arts Council at 910-323-1776.
how to use this booklet
• Decide on the scope of project you are interested in: A multiple day residency? An assembly performance? A
workshop?
• Review the Table of Contents on pages 2 and 3. Artists are listed alphabetically with the artist’s page number. A
graph is provided that indicates their artistic discipline(s) and other academic areas addressed in their programs,
based on North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Essential Standards.
• Read “The Way to Care for Your Visiting Artist” on page 5.
• Read through the artists listed; additional information can be found at the artist’s website. The Arts Council has
additional materials on file, such as curriculum guides. These materials may be valuable when selecting an artist.
You may make an appointment to review these materials at any time.
• Select the artist and program. Fill out the grant application for your project and send it in.
Please note you can apply for several artists but please send only one application per school.
• A grants panel will meet to review applications and distribute grant funds. After you have been notified of your
grant award, the Artist(s) will work directly with the school to schedule performance/residency/workshop dates.

Residencies may vary, depending on the needs of the school, but generally last one week. During that time the artist will
work with a minimum of one and a maximum of four classes per day. A residency should be an on-going relationship
with the same students each day. The artist is expected to coordinate with the curriculum objectives of the teacher or
school.
*Grant Funding: In a effort to promote more residencies in schools the Arts Council will provide 2/3 and the selected
school each provide 1/3 of the artist’s fee (Example: Artist’s Fee = $2500, Arts Council Grant = $1667, School’s Matching
Funds = $833).

Assembly performances vary, but typically involve an artist or artist group performing for an audience
of one or more classrooms for a single session. In a workshop, an artist or artist group work with one
classroom or small group for a single session.
*Grant Funding: Schools can apply for funds to cover up to 50% of the Artist’s Fee (Example: Artist’s
Fee=$300, Arts Council Grant=$150, School’s Matching Funds = $300).

Grant Application (page 7). Note – a PDF form-fillable application is available on line at the Arts
Council’s website: www.theartscouncil.com. Then return application to the Arts Council by mail, hand

The Way to Care for Your Visiting Artist
1.
Select your artists using the Arts Council’s AIS Directory as your guide. For more
details, call the Arts Council at 323-1776 to discuss which artists would be best for
your school’s cultural arts program or review of the artist’s website.
2.
Make sure you understand the commitment before you sign the contract between
the Arts Council, the school and the visiting artist. Please call the Arts Council for
any assistance you may need.
3.
The artists will contact the schools to schedule dates/times for their visits to the
schools. They will contact the principal and/or the designated school liason. All
scheduled visits and/or changes to the schedules must be reported to the Arts Council
by the artists and the schools.
4.
Pay the Arts Council on time as specified in the contract; artists expect and need
their checks on time. You are requesting a Matching Grant, the schools pay the Arts
Council and the Arts Council pays the artists.
5.
For performances, workshops and residencies, certified teachers must be in attendance
with the students. The artists are there to enhance learning, not to handle discipline
and other normal classroom details. There should be one (1) certified teacher per
25-30 students present at all times.
6.
Provide water, juice or soft drinks available before, during or after the programs. Just
ask the artists their preference – it will be appreciated.
7.
Find out the technical requirements – they may be minimal, but very important to
the artists and to the audiences.
8.
Decide who will briefly introduce the artist to the audience. This person should also
acknowledge the Arts Council and the matching grant as stated in the contract. This
person should be available to supervise the program and assist the artist if necessary.
9.
It is good PR for the schools to inform their parents and the public about the “great
things” happening in the schools. So, call the local newspaper, put the events in your
school newsletter and get the word out as much as possible.
10.
Complete the required Evaluation Report Forms carefully and on time. The quality
of your report will affect your chances of receiving funds from the Arts Council in
the future.

Plan your programs with care and care for your artists.

Susana & Timmy Abell/ Silver Trout Arts
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Both Susana and Timmy Abell have earned stellar reputations
through many years of work in schools. Susana spent seven
years as one of New Jersey’s most sought after teaching artists,
with support from Carnegie Hall and the Geraldine R. Dodge
Foundation. Timmy has been a North Carolina touring and
recording artist for 25 years, presenting educational concerts and
workshops in 21 states. Silver Trout Arts is a combined effort of
their many talents.

One Day Residency – This arts infusion brings Susana and Timmy into your school for a full day, beginning with
school performances (K-2 & 3-5 or K-5) followed by in-depth, hands-on workshops with each artist for selected

ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES:
Smart Art for Cool Kids – Silver Trout offers a full-fledged
stage performance blending four major art forms: Story telling,
Puppetry, Poetry and Music – emphasizing the theme of “many
different ways to tell a story.” The concert includes an original
puppet fable, “The Gardener,” performed to live original music
on the hammered dulcimer as well as original and traditional
songs, original stories, various puppet characters and instrumental
music played on seven different instruments. Throughout each age
appropriate performance, the students are actively involved and
engaged as they join in a sit-down square dance, keep rhythms,
volunteer to come onto the stage and respond to artists’ prompts.
Three Day Residency – This three-day residency begins with performances for the entire school (K-2 & 3-5) followed
by two and half days of classroom workshops for selected groups in puppetry arts with Susana and in songwriting
with Timmy. The residency is completed with an evening family concert (promotional materials will be provided).

Five Day Residency – This five-day residency includes performances for the entire school (K-2 & 3-5), then four core
groups (four selected classes) meet each day for five days with either Susana in puppetry arts or Timmy in songwriting
for a truly in-depth arts experience. Additional workshops for non-core groups are scheduled for each day. The
residency includes an evening family concert.
Timmy Abell: Folk Music
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Timmy Abell is one of the nation’s top
contemporary songwriters for children. Recipient
of the prestigious North Carolina Arts Council’s
Fellowship for Songwriting, he is best known
for his highly entertaining family concerts and
educational school programs. Over the past two
decades his recordings have been enjoyed by tens
of thousands of families around the country.

Timmy’s concerts are an interplay of music and
storyteling featuring a collection of rare musical
instruments including hammered dulcimer,
English concertina, bowed psaltery, lap dulcimer,
and penny whistle along with guitar and banjo.
For thirty years, Timmy has celebrated both
the historcal and living qualities of American,
Appalacian, International, and origional folk music.
His story telling includes a rich variety of adventure
stories, tall tales, fairy tales, and mountain Jack
Tales often punctuated with music. Timmy Abell’s
music has received the highest national awards
from the American Library Association, ‘Parents’
Choice’ and the National Association of Parenting
Publications.

African American Dance Ensemble

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
The African American Dance Ensemble seeks
to preserve and share the finest traditions
of African and African American dance
and music through research, education and
entertainment. Expect to be taken places you
have never been before. Expect to soar with
the beat of ancient rhythms. Expect to never
look at dance the same way again. Expect to be
transformed.
The School Concert is a blend of lecture/
demonstration and African dance
performance. Bodies move to the beat of
ancient rhythms, retracing and renewing
traditions rooted in African soil. Dancers,
clothed in colorful garments much like those worn by their ancestors, swirl on swift feet, calling up the spirits
and the legacy of their African brothers and sisters. Musicians create a powerful wave of sound with handcrafted
drums and other traditional African instruments. The company offers programs that are age range sensitive, i.e.
the repertoire includes at least six versions of lecture demonstrations for various age ranges.

Scott Ainslie
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Scott Ainslie has presented teaching concerts for over
twenty years on the African roots of American music. He
brings the history and soul of the music alive through story
and audience involvement in rhythm, harmonies, call and
response. Ainslie is a mesmerizing historian and inspired
musician who has a deep reverence for the tradition and
history of the music he presents.
Scott Ainslie’s popular teaching concerts illustrate America’s
hidden music history with live performances of work songs,
blues, gospel and jazz. Interactive educational concerts are
tailored to specific grade levels, Ainslie leads audiences of
all ages clapping and singing through a survey of more than
a century of musical history, showcasing the interplay of
African and American musicians and musical traditions.

South (4-12); Before Rock ‘n’ Roll (K – 8).

Lloyd Arneach
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Lloyd Arneach was born and reared on the Cherokee Reservation in NC where he learned his first legends from two
storytelling uncles. Lloyd’s stories range from the “Old Stories” of the Cherokee to stories of contemporary Native
Americans. Lloyd lectures on Cherokee history and culture and tells stories of Native history from other tribes. His style
is humorous, informative, and extremely moving.
Storytelling performances for kindergarten to high school and families include a question and answer session when time
allows. Performances for elementary students focus on the Cherokee traditional tales. Performances for middle school,
high school and adult audiences focus on traditional tales and contemporary and historical stories of the Cherokee and
other Native tribes. Cherokee cultural history sessions of 60 minutes are available for small groups of 30 or less including
lecture, artifacts and question and answer.

Trent Arterberry
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Trent Arterberry, a.k.a. Trent the Mime, is the quieter half of the Super Scientific Circus. Trent’s solo work uniquely combines
masterful mime, poignant monologue, comedic speaking characters, dramatic narratives, eccentric dance, and offbeat
puppetry. Arterberry is currently touring across the US and Canada to schools, community theatres, festivals and libraries
with three different one-man shows.
“The Secret Life of Walter Manny” (K-6) is the story of a young hero-in-training who is overpowered by his own
imagination. The show contains themes of self-control and respect for others.

“Think Bigg” (K-6) blends mime, storytelling and puppetry in an exciting introduction to physical theatre. With lots of
audience participation, it it has ties to language arts curriculum.
“My Impractical Life” (6-12) is the semi-autobiographical story of how Trent became an artist. Addressing career goals, it
contains powerful messages for students about finding and pursuing one’s passion in the face of adversity.

WORKSHOPS:
The Mime and Improvisation workshop is designed to give students a sense of the elements of mime and dramatic
movement. Students will be taught isolated movements of the body and how to create basic illusions like the tug of war,
imaginary wall and other object manipulations. Movement qualities using focus, breath, rhythm, stillness, and economy of
movement will be explored. Improvisations based on dramatic tableaux will lead to short sketches performed for the class.

Bay Street Brassworks
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Bay Street Brassworks (YAMAHA Performing Artists), has
performed at most of the major Universities from coast to coast and
is the premiere educational brass ensemble of its kind. The ensemble
received the first prize at the New York Brass Conference Brass
Quintet Competition in 2003. Founded in 1995, this brass quintet
performs in a wide variety of musical genres ranging from Bach to

The Beast is dedicated to education and cultural outreach. The group has developed workshops on creativity,
improvisation, and the history of African-American music based on the Blackademics Hip Hop curriculum founded by
emcee Pierce Freelon. Pierce Freelon is an adjunct professor of African American Studies at UNC Chapel Hill and
North Carolina Central University. He earned his BA in African American Studies and is MA in Pan African Studies at
UNC and Syracuse, respectively. The Former Director.of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz’ Bebop to Hip Hop
program, Freelon has educated internationally to a multi- generational audience in New York, Los Angeles, New Delhi
and Accra. Pianist Eric Hirsh, Drummer Stephen Coffman and Bassist Peter Kimosh all earned music degrees from
UNC with a focus on Jazz Studies.

Burning Coal Theatre Company
Burning Coal’s SHAKESCENES performance aims to
demystify Shakespeare and his works for elementary,
middle, and high school students. In this 50-minute performance, Burning Coal’s Director of Education debunks the
myths surrounding Shakespeare and his plays (they aren’t old, boring, or hard to understand!) through fun, interactive,
scholarly narration. This is then supplemented by scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays performed
by Burning Coal’s professional acting troupe. Burning Coal also tours one of its mainstage classical shows every spring.

Joe Edwards taught art and drama in Charlotte for 15 years before starting
Whiterock Studio where he designed, manufactured, and sold original sculpture
internationally for 12 years. He has taught classes/workshops for the last two
decades. Currently, Joe is the host and producer of the Claywright Workshop,
an educational television program produced and shown through TVAccess21
in Charlotte, North Carolina.
WORKSHOPS:
Innovative hand-building demonstrations show techniques developed by a

Suzanne B. Farrior
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Suzanne Farrior was born and raised in Richmond, VA.
Always knowing that she loved art, she dreamed as a child of
some day illustrating children’s books. She didn’t know, then,
that the books would be her own. With a BA in Education,
focused on art, Suzanne went on to teach Art in the public
schools of Virigina for 7 years before moving to North Carolina
where she taught for the next 24 years in Cumberland County
Schools. Suzanne retired in 1999, at which time she went on
to pursue her dreams of publishing her own children’s books,
Froggie Babies, which was released in June of 2001, was the first
of her books. In September of 2002 her second book, A Child’s
World from My Point of View, was released. Her third book,
The Hungry Little Bunny, was released in August of 2004. In
addition to speaking to school groups, libraries, and reading
associations about her love of reading, Suzanne continues to
write and is currently working on her next book.
“Learn to Love to Read” - Mrs. Farrior finds the humor in
everyday occurrences and paints word-pictures with her
poetry to make reading fun for children. She strives to see
and interpret life through the eyes of a child, to draw them
into reading her works and viewing the accompanying artwork. She explains how she came to be an author/
illustrator and encourages students to follow their own dreams. Critics have compared her works to those of
Shel Silverstein.

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra enters its 58th season as one of the
oldest symphony orchestras in North Carolina. The Orchestra is dedicated to

Water Everywhere, has been a professional variety artist
since 1981. He has performed with the world-famous
Pickle Family Circus of San Francisco and the award

Brothers. Since 1989 he has been performing theatrically

assigned within the group. Students will then begin creating their own simple puppets and props with provided

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
For over 20 years, The Healing Force (Joseph, Gail, Sonji,
and Karim Anderson) has thrilled audiences with their
unique blend of music and story telling. Since 1989, they have
brought their performances, residencies, and workshops in
communities all over the U.S.A. and abroad. In 2008, this
family group received the coveted international Ralph Bunche
Award and were named Goodwill Ambassadors of the Arts.
RESIDENCY:
Faces of Africa: A Cultural Journey (7) is a three-day residency designed to supplement the seventh grade curriculum.
Each class visits a “live” exhibit, the center of which is the drum circle. The exhibit includes pictures of real people
from four of the countries from which the drums originated (Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast); information (flags,
population, land area, languages, ethnic groups, etc.); and artifacts which include carvings, masks, instruments, fabrics,
beads, baskets and gourds. After a 30 minute “treasure hunt” in the exhibit, the class sits down for 30 minutes in the circle,
where each student will have a hands-on drumming experience! On the third day, The Healing Force performs The
Rhythm of the Drum.

Faces of Africa (K-5) for elementary school is a variation of Faces of Africa: A Cultural Journey. During this 3-day
residency, students visit a large exhibit which is arranged in nine stations (which include baskets, carvings, toys, pictures,
instruments with a hands-on section, fabrics and jewelry from all over Africa). With treasure hunt sheets in hand,
students find many interesting items in this exhibit and get a social studies grade for filling out their sheets. At the same
time, a drum circle is being conducted in another section of the school so all students are fully immersed in culture for
two days. On the third day, The Healing Force preforms The Rhythm of the Drum for the entire student body.

Billy Jonas
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
A Billy Jonas concert is an explosion of energy! In singalongs, bangalongs,
whisperalongs, as well as improvised songs, his primary instrument is
the audience. Billy’s original pieces are played on fanciful “industrial repercussion” - instruments made from found objects. He sings in a clear tenor
voice, his guitar work is adventurous, alternately percussive and lyrical. Billy
has been an international performer and educator for over two decades.
Billy performs original material composed to meet the needs of specific age

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Chaz Misenheimer is a professional magician, specializing in special event
and education venues. He is a featured performer at festivals throughout
the southeast, and has worked with organizations such as the North
Carolina Museum of History, NC Zoo, Stone Mountain Park (GA), and
the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. By respecting students’ natural
fascination with magic, as well as their healthy skepticism, Chaz creates
a shared theatrical experience focused on imagination. A native North
Carolinian, Chaz graduated from UNC-CH (political science).
In “Reading Is Magic” Chaz performs magic and tells stories through which students’ natural fascination with magic is

Kids Make Comics! Students examine the visual and language tools used by cartoonists to tell comic book
stories. Using simple shapes, each student will design and develop an original comic book character using the

providing students with that spark of creativity needed to begin writing their own comic. Students will be
responsible for creating individual character sheets and a full-page black & white comics project for display.

Photo - Realism - Drawing Class: Art teachers at most schools will be familiar with this style of drawing. The process
consists of reproducing a photo into a drawing using only a grid, eraser, #2 pencil and an eraser stump. The class will
participate in a step-by-step process of how this is done, resulting in a drawing that looks like a black and white photo.
Anthony’s artwork is an example of this style of drawing, unlike sketching, and he takes it to the next level – breathing
more life into the picture.
Set Design - Scene Painting: Mr. Morrison received his BA degree in Color and Design from the North Carolina School
of the Arts. His “On Set Design” or “Scene Painting” residencies would be helpful to students going to college.

Anthony is a native of Fayetteville, NC. He attended Terry Sanford Senior
High School, studied voice at Wingate College and received a bachelor’s
degree in set design from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Anthony

School in Cumberland County for four years. Anthony’s detailed pencil
drawings have been featured in galleries in Pennsylvania, Virginia and North
Carolina. His art talents have also been featured by the Arts Council of

school tour has served as a practical visual aid and
teacher tool in its ability to get through to students
Shakespeare’s poetic and dramatic genius. A multiracial company of seven professional actors, minimal
sets, expressive costumes, available lighting – STG
is easy to bring to schools, and certain to inspire

Now in its 37th year, Shakespeare To Go (STG) will
feature Julius Caesar (about 55 minutes) for high
schools and A Midsummer Night’s Shakespeare
(about 45 minutes), a special edited version of Shakespare’s beloved comedy, for middle and elementary grades 3-5.
(middle schools have the option of engaging Julius Caesar if they choose). STG features a multi-racial company of seven
professional actors, expressive costuming and minimal settings that allow the shows to perform virtually anywhere.

“Mother Earth and her Children” and “Good Night Fairies” are
both books with a Dance Interpretation by the North Carolina
State Ballet Company. “Mother Earth and her Children” exalts
the four seasons with music from Vivaldi’s “The Seasons”. “Good
Night Fairies” is a bedtime story about Fairies of Nature with a
menagerie of musical composers including Mendelsohn, Vivaldi,
Respiqhi, Tcaikovsky, and Ravel. This is an interactive assembly
that may use volunteers from the audience in demonstrating
how we build the dance performance. Dance students and
choreographers of the Ballet Company show how the movements
they learn in dance classes are incorporated into the dance
choreography, and how the music is used in the creation of the
piece. Children chosen from the audience may be used interactively
and may be incorporated into the piece.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
The North Carolina State Ballet has been providing school
performances of the “Nutcracker” since 1977 at the Crown
Center Theatre along with a Spring performance of “Ballet
Classics” since 1990. In 2012 the Ballet Company was asked
by the Headquarters Library in Fayetteville to produce a dance
interpretation to the book “Good Night Fairies”. On February 11,
2012 dancers performed to a capacity audience at the Fayetteville
Headquarters Library and did an encore performance on August
25, 2012. On March 2, 2013 a dance interpretation to the book
“Mother Earth and her Children” was performed for the
Headquarters Library to a full audience. Unfortunately due to the
space limitations at the library many have been turned away. The
book interpretations are now available to schools and teachers.

BATIK Fiber Art (Grades: 4-12) Students create their own individual, exciting Batiks, and develop an understanding of
this success oriented, self-esteem boosting, fiber art form with both African and Indonesian roots. This unusual process
involves melted wax and vibrant fabric dyes. With input from teachers, the subjects of the Batiks can be integrated with
and enhance your Social Studies or Science curriculum. For example, eco systems, rain forests, Latin American designs,
etc. Students keep a journal that can meet several Language Arts requirements. Many schools use this Batik Residency
year after year to become a tradition in a particular grade, such as 5th grade. There are opportunities to create an
additional batik as a legacy gift that serves as a community builder, with school staff and parents being encouraged to
participate.
UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACTION THROUGH COLLAGE (Grades: 9-12) Students create richly layered surfaces
that will become strong abstract collages. This residency encourages students to “think outside the box”, see beyond the
obvious and learn how to turn the concrete into the abstract. Students will work with unusual Japanese rice papers and
a variety of media in new and different ways. Constructive critiquing will be ongoing. Elements of good design and
presentation techniques will be discussed, as these collages would be appropriate for inclusion in college art portfolios

Tony Peacock
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Tony Peacock has been visiting North Carolina classrooms since 1998. He brings a
genuine love of our state and its people to each school he visits. A graduate of Mount
Olive College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his experience as
a published newspaper columnist, essayist, short story writer and novelist make for
inspiring writing presentations to students. Tony is also a former National Hollerin’
Champion, a skill that he often demonstrates joyfully for deserving residency and
workshop participants. His classes have been called “an amazing story of connecting and
bonding.”
RESIDENCY AND WORKSHOPS:
Tony offers 3-day and 5-day writing residency programs. These residencies involve
working with the same students each day and generally focus on narrative writing.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Charles Pettee, (pronounced “Petty”), has delighted audiences
with a tasty blend of original and traditional music seasoned
at more than 5,000 performances throughout the US, Canada,
and Europe. He is a founding member of the world-traveling
Shady Grove Band, and is currently working on his thirteenth
full length CD/album. His original songs have received airplay
worldwide. His love and mastery of southern string music have
made him a sought-after performer in educational settings for
over twenty years. He currently resides in Chapel Hill, NC with
his wife and two boys.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Russian Duo, an international project born out of a love of
traditional music and classical elegance, has been fascinating
children across North America with vibrant balalaika, piano and
vocal performances. Oleg, a virtuoso from Siberia and Terry, an
American pianist perform traditional Russian music, chamber
music, classics and unique transcriptions of world favorites.
Russian Duo celebrates cross-cultural collaboration.
Discover teamwork in action; experience how performers,
composers and audiences work together. Students will be
captivated by exuberant music, energized by dynamic rhythms,
moved by beautiful melodies. Learn how the balalaika came onto
the modern concert stage from humble peasant origins in Old
Russia. The audience becomes an essential part of the concert,
singing with the Duo and performing on stage using Russian percussion.

Paul “Walking Stick” Taylor, 2013 finalist for Australian of the Year is an
Australian storyteller, didjeridoo player, singer & cultural ambassador. His

European & Aboriginal culture. Paul’s recording “Coeee” has won four awards
including a Parents’ Choice Gold and a National Parenting Publications Gold
Award.

“Wonders Down Under” (elementary, middle, high school and family) is an
interactive sharing from both Aboriginal and European Australian cultures’
songs, music and instruments, story, dance and art. It includes folk songs;

clap stick in the Aboriginal tradition. Students will be invited onstage to
participate in the presentation, learning songs and dances from both cultures.
Broad audience participation in stories include traditional call and response

“Bush University” (3rd – 12th and family) presents the Aboriginal culture through music, storytelling and slides of
10,000 year old rock paintings. Bush University is the Aboriginal term for the School of Nature, learning and paying
attention to the plants, birds, animals, insects, the land, that are spiritually alive with story and song and constantly
teaching us, reminding us of our primary role as humans, to be the custodians, to care for the natural world.

Paul Taylor has performed and taught for over 300,000 American children. Mr. Taylor offers twelve workshops in

in the Aboriginal style and the mural is developed around a local theme like wildflowers, birds or history of the students’
community.

Horse-drawn carriages roll down Hay Street carrying
shoppers the old-fashioned way, past merchants’ windows
adorned with beautiful Victorian holiday decorations, past
artisans and vendors of all sorts of delightful treats. Joyful
children pose with Father Christmas for memory-laden

The smells of cider and gingerbread permeate the chilly air. And there is
Ebenezer Scrooge himself, pursued by the ghost of Jacob Marley.
As darkness approaches and the clock reaches 5 p.m., townspeople gather in

Airborne & Special Operations Museum
ABOUT THE MUSEUM:
Opened on August 16, 2000, the sixtieth anniversary of the first
parachute jump by US Army soldiers, the Airborne & Special
Operations Museum is a 59,000 square foot facility offering adults
and children a fascinating multimedia experience. The museum is
the culmination of more than fifteen years of discussion, planning
and fund-raising, an effort involving the US Army, the State of
North Carolina, the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County and
countless private citizens.

The exhibit galleries include more than 25,000 square feet of historical exhibits, audiovisual presentations, full-scale
dioramas, aircraft, vehicles, weapons, and equipment, all telling the story of the US Army’s paratroopers, glider men and

The 4-minute motion simulator experience provides visitors the virtual experience of joining in with these extraordinary
soldiers as they ski, parachute, and fly over rooftops in exciting
adventures.

when tours are booked 2 weeks in advance.

About the Garden:
From the sculpture-like starkness of the winter forest to the riotous
color of the summer flowers, Cape Fear Botanical Garden has
something to see year-round. Nestled almost 80 acres of natural
beauty and set between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek, the
Garden features many nature trails and several special gardens and
collections. Some of these are the camellia collection, a historic
look at the progression of daylily breeding, and a shade garden. The
butterfly stroll, a 450 foot walk features over 100 different plants that
are attractive to both butterflies and their caterpillars. In the children’s
garden, the little ones can pretend they are Lilliputians from Gulliver’s
Travels while scrambling over logs, looking through giant glasses,
running around Gulliver’s giant chair and using their imaginations to
pretend they are at the sea in the sandbox.
Field Trips:
Guided tours are available for students Pre-K through 12th adults. For
our student field trips we also offer hands-on programs that go along
with their chosen tours. While on their tour and program students
use our outdoor classroom to better understand the selected natural
science topic. Children’s Garden educational programs are developed
following North Carolina state curriculum guidelines. The Garden is
also an approved Cumberland County Field Trip destination. Field
trips are by reservation only and fees are based on the chosen activity

Cape Fear Studios
Cape Fear Studios was established in 1989 and is the one and only visual arts
cooperative in Fayetteville. We have been in the same location on Maxwell Street
since our beginning and pride ourselves in growing each year. Local artists pay
a yearly membership fee and volunteer their own time to help, in union with the
Cumberland County Arts Council and generous donors, in the operations of the
Studio. Local artists pay a yearly membership fee and volunteer their own time to
assist—together with the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and
other generous donors—with the daily operations of the Studios.
In the Main Gallery Cape Fear Studios exhibits art in a variety of mediums by
reputable regional, national, and international artists; the Main Gallery shows
rotate monthly throughout each year. In the Retail Gallery Cape Fear Studios
shows pottery, photography, paintings and drawings, glasswork, wood art,
jewelry—all created by Studios members. These works also rotate monthly so
that new art works are always available. Each new exhibit in the Main and Retail
Galleries opens in conjunction with Fayetteville’s downtown 4th Friday events
and celebrations.
Field Trips:
Guided tours of Cape Fear Studios are available, and may include
member artists present to demonstrate their individual artistic
process for students and guests. Special one-on-one meetings with
member artists are also available upon request. Cape Fear Studios
welcomes the opportunity to mentor and work with local schools and
programs for students of all ages.
Community Service:
College and high school students can receive community service
hours and different types of educational credit by working with
Cape Fear Studios artists in a variety of ways and within a variety of
mediums.

Fascinate-U Children’s Museum
Fascinate-U Children’s Museum is a place where children
can explore their world the way they know and learn best
– through creative role-playing, imagination, and hands-on
manipulations. The “mini-city” design allows children to
experience the world as adults do, while providing ample
opportunities for interaction with others. The museum’s
Science & Health Center is ideal for curriculum based science
programs for 1st through 8th grades.
Come on in! Fascinate-U, located in downtown Fayetteville,
North Carolina, has hands-on exhibits. You can touch and
play with everything! In our mini-city everything is kid-sized!
Children can go shopping at the Gro-Right Grocery & Deli,
put on a judge’s robe and pass their sentence-gavel in hand,
respond to calls at the 911 Emergency Dispatch Center, give
the NC weather forecast at the WNUZ center, and explore our
many other fun-filled exhibits!

Fascinate-U can now bring Science Programs to your classroom.
These programs offer a hands-on curriculum based science experience
at an affordable price. We have a number of programs already
developed for you to choose from. Each program takes 45 minutes to
an hour. Don’t see a program that works for you? With enough notice

book a program for your classroom. Programs range from $1.50 to
$4.00 per child. Travel costs for the educators may apply for schools
outside of Cumberland County.

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra’s mission is “To Educate.
To Entertain. To Inspire.” For 57 years the FSO has been helping
to educate our community’s youth about the beauty and the
technical foundation of music.
Middle & High School Music Students
The FSO offers open rehearsals for our masterworks concerts.
Attend an open rehearsal and see the process that goes into
getting a piece ready for performance. Check our website for
days and times.
Meet the Orchestra
A small group of three Fayetteville Symphony musicians
travel to local schools to perform an interactive program
that introduces children to the instruments in the orchestra. Children learn about the instrument families in an up-close,
personal and age-approporate way; including performances
and demonstration on serval instruments. Ideally suited
for groups of 100 students or fewer, these presentations last
approximately 30 to 45 minutes. $400 per session.
Master Classes
Educational challenge and musical excitement come
together! Give your students the unique opportunity to
attend an inspiring, interactive, tailored session with a FSO
clinician. Your ensemble will benefit enormously from the
personalized attention of professional musicians. For fees and

Magic of Music
Experience the magic of the FSO in an intimate setting! Bring an FSO musician to your school or
community. This program offers performances by individuals and small ensembles of the FSO,
addressing topics ranging from musical careers, instrument families, music history and even multi-day
residencies. On-The-Go musicians are available to present to student and adult audiences. For fees and
schedule information please contact the FSO.

Museum of the Cape Fear
GUIDED TOURS:
Available Tuesday through Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
MUSEUM EXHIBITS:
Students receive a tour of the museum covering the history
of southern North Carolina in a chronological time line from
American Indians to the turn of the 20th century. This is a
great tour that complements North Carolina history taught in
4th and 8th grades.
1897 POE HOUSE:
Built in 1897 by the Poe family, students will learn about life in
the early 1900s. One hundred years ago many technological changes occurred just as technological advances in our time
have changed the way we live. A tour through the Poe House will highlight the comparisons of life now and then.
Choose to tour one or both facilities when you call to make your reservation. Make reservations at least two weeks in
advance. Through a generous grant from Youth Growth Stock Trust, the museum will pay for the bus mileage, bus driver,
and one substitute teacher so that your field trip is free of cost to your school and your students. To take advantage of this
