Borneo adventure
for everyone
The island where smiles,
sunshine and jungles take your
breath away!
Welcome to Borneo!
The tropical paradise that
promises fun, adventure, food
and culture plus a lot more!
B
orneo is unique as you could visit three
countries in just one place; Sarawak
and Sabah states of Malaysia, Brunei
and Kalimantan province of Indonesia. The vast
array of cultures, customs, food, lifestyles and
adventures are all here for everyone to enjoy with
friendly smiles and courteous services which have
been reported in blogs, Facebook and other social
medias from visitors coming from all over the world.
This is one place that needs to be experienced to
understand and enjoy!
Visit the traditional homes of our indigenous people
including Iban, Kelabit, Kayan, Melanau, Malay and
others at our renowned Sarawak Cultural Village in
Kuching, Sarawak or other home stay programmes
available in many parts of the state to experience the
hospitality and adventure. Homes are places where
people have fond memories of their childhood and
the state government of Sarawak is bringing more
affordable homes to the people in the state through
various programmes. We have also set up many
satellite towns in other centres to create new growth
centres and places for people to live and enjoy with
their families throughout the state. It is through
these initiatives that Sarawak will continue to grow
and attract investments from locals and foreigners
together with our industrialization programmes
through SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable
Energy) where the central coastal zone will be
transformed. Inside this issue of Borneo Talk there are
numerous housing and building developments that
will be of interest to both locals and foreigners alike.
As mentioned earlier, food is something that every
visitor to Borneo will always be fully satisfied! Go
from traditional to modern, fusion to home cook
and international class settings to DIY (do-ityourself); it’s centered on your choice. Similarly,
the adventure trails run from mountain climbing
to diving, jungle trekking to music extravaganza,
caving to river rafting and many more! Plan your
trip based on your needs and you will surely get
what you want. You definitely need to come back
to complete the rest of the adventure as there’s just
too much to do in one trip!
Always take care of yourself and those in your
company when in Borneo so everyone will enjoy
himself or herself. Take the necessary precaution if
you are allergic to certain insects’ bites or food and
we believe the adventure will be most memorable!

K
uching doesn’t yet have a commercial centre
which serves as that third place between home
and office. Our psychographic research tells
us that for most visitors, the relationship with commercial
centre is very transactional – you go and get your business
done and then you leave.”
"In terms of a place where people can linger and
meet each other, where ideas are sparked and traded,
connections kindled and alliance formed, we don’t have
that yet.”
“The development will also house the first rooftop
performing arts centre (PAC) in Kuching. With plentiful
gardens and a sprawling park, the percentage of green
is also unprecedented for a development our size –
perhaps among the highest in Malaysia.”
“In terms of aesthetics, the goal is to have the
architecture still look nice, if not better, ten or twenty
years from now. We ended up choosing a lot of simple
materials because simplicity will always stand the test
of time. The design draws a lot of inspiration from our
Sarawakian architecture as well.”
“Our upcoming development is designed to fill that void.”
“It took us years to get the concept and planning down
and we believe we have on our hands something that
is truly unique as well as authentically Sarawakian. It is
our hope that people will find it an inspirational place
to be at and eventually become a source of pride for all
Sarawakians.”
“It is really designed first and foremost as a place for
people to spend time - not money. We believe if people
are in love with the place, the rest will take care of itself.”
“We look forward to sharing more information about
this upcoming development with you in the near future.
Stay tuned!”
“ It will be a place at the intersection of food and art. ”

State’s

magnet for
investors
P
roperty development
in Sarawak has
been increasing
ever since the
state government
adopted its policy of ‘Politics of
Development’ and has continued
to be on the uptrend with the new
Chief Minister,” said Datuk
Haji Abdul Karim Rahman
Hamzah, Assistant Minister
for Ministry of Housing,
Sarawak, during a recent
interview with Borneo
Talk. He further stated
that the political stability
of the state is the main
drawing factor apart from
the favourable investment
opportunities through
generous government
incentives in some areas, especially in
the manufacturing, industrial sectors.
“Nobody will invest

attracts

investment which is why Sarawak is always
showing rapid growth in its annual report
on property development here,” - Datuk Karim.
The mega project under SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy) further
attracts investors due to the availability of cheap power from the mega dams
and plans for investments by the government in areas like education, Halal
Hub, ports and housing all encourages investors to come here, he added. On
the issue of GST on property development, he stated that the tax has only been
implemented this year so it remains to be seen if any impact will arise from
that. Overall, he reasoned that the market factors of demand and supply would
be the deciding factor for property development in the coming years, which is
expected to continue its trend upwards.
“Another indicator that many people have pointed out is that there seems to be
so many mega malls coming up in Sarawak which they claimed will create an
oversupply problem here. I often revert the question to
them; if you are an investor putting in millions of Ringgit
to develop the malls, would you not have first made all the
necessary surveys and checks to make sure that your mall will
be thriving after it is completed? Certainly! they replied. All
these builders of mega malls here are very smart investors
who know the value of property and are able to vision
their malls for the next twenty to thirty years of continuous
profitability. In fact, majority of these shopping outlets have
been ‘snapped’ up upon completion of projects so that is
another indicator that the demand is there,” he explained.
Datuk Karim also added that the government at both state
and federal levels have also invested heavily in many housing projects for the people
through various programs like RMR (Rumah Mesra Rakyat), RMM (Rumah Mampu
Milik), Rumah Rakyat 1Malaysia with HDC (Housing Development Corporation) and
SPNB (Suruhanjaya Perumahan Negara Berhad) in building affordable homes for
the people. In addition, private investors of housing projects too have lent a helping
hand by undertaking their share of these projects in various places in the state. As
such, the welfare of the people is always foremost on the mind of the government
to ensure that there will not be illegal squatters and shantytowns coming up in the
towns and cities as people have opportunities to own their own homes.

Property
Boom in
Kuching City
T
he property market
in Kuching has
continued to rise
with commercial
and residential
development sprouting in various
locations throughout the city despite
the rapid housing prices over the
past few years.
Borneo Talk recently spoke with a
few locals here to get their views
on the general buzz of Kuching’s
property market sentiment and what
they think is the reason behind this
property boom.
Instarmac team
where the demand for it has tapered
off. I don’t know how fast our
market here can digest the fast rate of
this property boom but I believe that
developers have been constructing to
preserve the value of Ringgit.
As for buyers, there are those
who rush to purchase properties
regardless of the price as buying
properties means that they can keep
the value of the Ringgit. Presently,
with interest rates from banks still
relatively low, people can still cling
on to this measure but the moment
the rates go up, speculators will be
forced to sell their properties.
With the intro of GST, prices of
goods have gone up and I believe it
will affect the purchasing power of
the general population.
Teo Yang Tuan, retired banker
Hudson William, contractor
I find that residential and commercial
properties are
growing in
Kuching. It’s
just the other
day I was
driving down
the BDC Flyover
from Kuching
International
Airport and I
saw that there’s another upcoming
commercial and residential
development being constructed.
I think there is
an oversupply
of commercial
properties and
residential
properties such
as high-end
condominiums
in Kuching
For me, I think commercial properties
located in prime locations in Kuching
will continue to attract buyers but
for those poorly located ones, I don’t
think developers will be able to sell
them as fast as they hoped because
there is an oversupply of commercial
development here.
“Malaysian housing market has
generally been sluggish as of late.
However, there will always be a
demand for well-thought-out, quality
products that are reasonably priced.
Our team at Instarmac has been
working very hard in order to deliver
precisely that to our customers.”

Jenny Ong, insurance agent
There seems to be a lot of upcoming
residential condominiums here
in Kuching. I think the reason
developers are moving towards
developing high-rise condominiums
because there is a growing demand
for them especially from the younger
generation who prefer to stay in
condominiums due to security.
Apart from that, they also see
purchasing
properties as
an investment
to their Ringgit
rather than
putting all
their money
in the bank
where interests
are lower as
compared to property investment in
which they can earn a larger profit.
Mark Curtis, architect
Kuching is expanding in both
commercial and residential properties
but I find that a lot of these new
developments are not all clustered in
the city centre but more in suburban
areas such as Kota Samarahan.
I believe the reason for these new
developments is that the standard of
living for the people of Kuching are
going up and thus better building
and infrastructure design. Hence, you
see a lot of high-rise condominiums
being developed here and changing
the skylines. After all, everyone wants
a certain level of comfort.
However, I think that with these
new developments there must also
be improvement to our road routes
and there
should be good
circulation to
accommodate
these high rise
buildings.
There are
certainly a lot
of big changes
coming up in Kuching within these
ten years. Who knows we could be
the richest state in Malaysia by then.

T
he 2nd Sarawak
Timber & SMEs Expo
2015 has once again
proven to be a great
success when it was
held at the Borneo Convention Centre
Kuching (BCCK) from April 17 to 20.
In addition to this, visitors at the
House of Acacia enjoyed a multisensory experience at the Acacia 3D
forest while a gallery featuring eyecatching artworks made from Acacia
wood materials were also on display.
Being a fast growing planted tree
species, Acacia has been identified as
a renewable and sustainable source
of raw materials which STIDC hoped
to capitalise on in transforming
Sarawak into a global player and hub
for Acacia furniture.
More than 10,000 visitors thronged
the convention centre during the
four-day event to explore the various
exhibits showcasing a wide variety
of timber products such as furniture,
wood panels and flooring as well as
non-timber based products ranging
from handicraft and health products
to food and beverage items.
A must-visit exhibit was none
other than the House of Acacia - a
research and development project on
Acacia by Sarawak Timber Industry
Development Corporation (STIDC)
and Samling Housing Products Sdn
Bhd (Samling) - which returns to the
expo bigger and better this year.
As part of its initiatives to increase
awareness on Acacia wood
utilisation particularly in the furniture
industry, STIDC and Samling
constructed a ‘house’ within BCCK
where visitors were ‘transported’
into a cosy yet contemporary home
where its living room, bedroom,
kitchen, dining area, and an outdoor
patio were spruced with furniture
made with Acacia wood.
Not only that, those who stepped
into the House of Acacia were also
introduced to the great adaptability
of Acacia wood as the walls,
flooring, ceilings, doors and panels
are also made completely out of
Acacia wood.
All About
During the launch, Second Resource
Planning and Environment Minister
Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan
who represented Chief Minister
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem
lauded the efforts of both STIDC and
Samling in the revival of House of
Acacia at the biennial expo.
According to him, the House of
Acacia proved that the state’s Acacia
species had great potential as an
alternative supply of raw material to
produce high quality furniture and
timber products that catered to the
local and international markets.
He hoped that such ongoing initiatives
can be rendered into producing and
creating an attractive image and brand
for Sarawak-produced furniture and
timber products and subsequently
create its own niche market
internationally in the future.
It is also STIDC and Samlings’ vision to
establish production house of acacia to
utilise the existing raw material from
acacia plantation and to develop R&D
initiatives in producing more value
added products from acacia tree. A
dedicated website acaciahouse.com
was also launched as part of STIDC
and Samlings’ efforts to
educate and promote the
versatile usage of acacia
wood to the domestic and
world market.

Around ten bamboo species from
Sarawak were on display at the
Bamboo Gallery such as the Bali
Bamboo, which is mainly used for
handicrafts as well as the Long Bamboo

for making furniture and handicrafts.
Visitors were also given an insight
on the versatility of bamboo through
the displays of general information

research and development on
bamboo at the gallery.
On the other hand, the gallery
also sported a photo-opt corner
featuring bamboo-made furniture

especially families with children.
Also popular with visitors were the
many bamboo-related activities such
as the Bamboo Fashion Show by
local Malaysian brand Ziboosa, which
focused on active wear clothing made

Development
of products from the SCORE area,” explained the
General Manager of BDA.
To undertake these challenges, BDA will have to
increase its manpower and expertise to oversee the
development of the town as the main administrative
agency for Bintulu and to always seek new ways to
better engage with the public’s demand for the town’s
development.

BDA expect to improve in areas of communications
with the public as well as internally too through
social media and other modern electronic tools; to
be more proactive, responsible and working
for the good of the organization and the welfare of
the people here. As such, BDA will be putting up new
guidelines for its staff in terms of KPI (Key Performance
Indicators) and goals to be achieved by 2020 to keep
abreast with the State’s vision to be a World Class Civil
Service. In the plans will also be regular trainings and
upgrading of officers
through courses.
BDA will also engage in a positive outlook and be
ready at all times to accept complaints and criticisms
openly as these are ways of assessment to improve
their performances and learn from mistakes. Whether
positive or negative feedbacks, they will all be analysed
with care and impartiality so as to better equip to
relook at the ways things are done and to improve
on them. However, laws must always be enforced
and officers will have to implement and enforce
these during the course of their work. So, things like
improper usage of five-footways along shopping areas
will have to be stopped, as these could be dangerous
to people and cause inconveniences too. Many others
like unauthorized extensions of buildings, illegal
businesses and outlets will have to be stopped too.
In this way it is hoped that people will abide by the
laws already in place so that the town will grow and
prosper for everyone to enjoy.
BDA welcome investors as well as visitors to Bintulu
and expect the town to be even more enjoyable to all.
The unique blend of locals of various ethnic, religious
and cultural backgrounds with foreigners of equally
varied backgrounds make Bintulu an interesting place to
appreciate and learn from one another as well as enjoy
the prospects of wide varieties of food and drinks.
BDA services will have to be
constantly upgraded and
improved over time with the
rising expectations of the
people in Bintulu so that the
town will continue to progress
in an orderly manner and for
the benefit of all.
Basically, BDA is a service
provider tasked with over
looking the growth and
development of the town; it is
the planner and administrator
to ensure that these will be accomplished in a manner it
is intended for. From beautifying the town to collecting
of rubbish, road buildings to township planning and
host of other administrative responsibilities, BDA is
expected to be able to undertake these without causing
slowdown and inconvenience to the public.
Welcome to Bintulu! BDA will always
be ready to provide the necessary
assistance where needed for everyone
to make the town a place for all –

The venue for the safari is

activities and ethnic inspired food,
Kampung Timurang, Kampung Danu,
Kampung Git. As the rafts slowly
follow the river down, participants
will enjoy the evergreen jungles on
either banks of the river where nature
is certainly alive and inspirational.
For a little thrill, the rafts will also
be negotiating a rapid at Giam, a
junction along the river where swilling
waters form a rapid with typical tunnel
shaped spirals. For safety purposes,
all participants are equipped with
life vests and also speed boats are
deployed along the rafting route to
provide assistance to all those in need.
“We have been organizing this event
for so many years and still every
year the participants continued to
be thrilled by the beautiful scenery
along the river. There are increasing
number of new participants with
also returning participants,” said the
organizer. Based on the feedbacks
from participants, majority of them
have expressed their satisfaction
of joining the fun filled event and
enjoying the friendship amongst
the rafters who come from all walks
of life. Due to the overwhelming
response each year, the organizers
also limit the number of rafts to

T
he annual Sarawak Regatta is the
granddaddy of all regattas in Malaysia,
having witnessed the first boat races
along the Sarawak River since 1872!
It is certainly a race like no other –
from expert paddlers to family, friends and colleagues
outdoing each other over the weekend from 25th - 27th
September 2015 in Kuching, capital of Sarawak.
The boats racing for the various categories come from
different ethnic origins as well as places throughout the
state while the number of paddlers can range from four
to the 30-person boat of the Blue Ribbon ‘Bidar’ event,
considered the most competitive of
all the races over the weekend.
Held annually at the
majestic Waterfront
where a panoramic view
of the race is available to
all, it is a must see event
for all visitors who have
never been to the state or
seen a boat race before. Better
still, register as a paddler in one of the categories
and experience a thrill of a lifetime! The actual
races comprise of competitions between the
government departments and agencies as well
as the private sector to open categories where
the experts seek the trophy
of King of the River!
The Sarawak Regatta
in Kuching is
Malaysia’s most
prestigious boat race
While participants of the regatta vie
for the various racing prizes, others
too have a chance to grab their own
prizes in the various side activities at
the event. Most hilarious is the duck
catching competition, which require
swimming skill as well as ‘live’ duck

catching skill! Kayakers too have
their chances to pick up prizes while
visitors and regatta fans can also explore the exhibitions
on display around the venue, try some of the exotic food
on sale from the various ethnic groups and get a close up
view of the arts and crafts for sale too.
Remember, Sunday, 27th September 2015 is the date
for the final races of the regatta which is a must go to
event. Take along hats and other sun shields for the day,
as it is usually a hot afternoon where the hottest river
competitions are taking place!

established Yayasan Sarawak as a
State statutory body on 27 May
1971 under the Yayasan Sarawak
Ordinance with the main objectives
of providing financial assistance
in education as well as to provide
education opportunities and facilities
to young Sarawakians who are in
primary schools right up to higher
learning institutions.
With its emphasis in education,
the foundation soon established its
name and earned the repute and
credibility among the people for
its role in ensuring that education
Such an instance on the latter
was during the early years of the
foundation’s formation in the
seventies where Sarawak’s education
facilities were far behind when
compared to what schools in West
Malaysia had.
In view of this, Yayasan Sarawak
then carved an education pathway
for Sarawakian students by sending
these students to undergo secondary
level education at selected schools
in West Malaysia. Through this
programme, the students enjoyed
education facilities, which were not
available to them and were thus
exposed to better education.
In addition to this, Sarawakian students
who were offered to further their
studies at higher learning institutions
were also given financial assistance.
Today, the role of Yayasan Sarawak
has certainly progressed by leaps
and bounds where it no longer
only provided scholarships or loans
to students as more education
opportunities are now offered to young
Sarawakians from pre-school up to the
highest education level irrespective of
their races all over the State.
Through the foundation,
education programmes have also
been expanded by collaborating
with parents, community, nongovernmental organisations (NGO),
government departments or
agencies, higher learning institutions
as well as the private sectors which
are directly involved in industrial
development.
Assistance from
Yayasan Sarawak
were no longer

programme, the
foundation took
into account
all elements
to ensure that
education
awareness were
channelled to
parents such
as the parental
motivation
programme
which focused
on the
importance of
education.
Students were also given exposure
on study methods and techniques to
achieve excellent results while talks
on choosing the right education
course or career pathway were
organised in collaboration with the
Sarawak Education Department,
Parent Teacher Association as well as
local communities.
Apart from this, the foundation also
introduced the Skills and Technical
Development Programme as part of
its efforts to curb social issues and
alleviate unemployment rates among
school leavers and youths. Sarawakian
youths under this programme were
given the opportunity to undertake
skills training and technical courses
at a number of selected technical
training institutions.
It is through this programme that
Yayasan Sarawak can assist the State
Government in producing skilled
workers from various highly sought
after industries particularly for the
development of Sarawak Corridor of

K
ite enthusiasts
in Sarawak will
once again be assembled
at Bintulu from 24th - 28th
September 2015 for the annual
International Borneo Kite Festival and everyone is
invited! Each year these kite lovers seem to outdo
each other with their unusual kites of all shapes and
sizes, colours and even skills to manipulate them. As
in previous years, the venue will once again be the
centre of the Gastown where the old airport used to
be and where the clear open space is most suited for
such an event!
Foreigners make up a significant number
of participants amongst the crowd
each year. Most just love to show
off their latest creations and also to
sell these to others or even exchange

four times!
One of these is for the
2,500 diamond shaped kites,
which stretched out for over
500 meters in an arch tunnel,
a sight to behold indeed!
Many a times, visitors shake
their heads in wonder as to how
such crafts could fly and even
manoeuvred in the clear blue
sky above their heads!
A fun event, especially for families
and children, the festival is always
interesting and is thrilling as some of
these enthusiasts will allow for visitors to
try out their kites for a feel of the pleasure
of the sport and hobby. Photographers too
have a field day with their cameras clicking
away for majestic pictures of these flying
sensations with their colourful spread. As
each session ends for the day, these kites are
disassembled and put into their carrying cases,
ready for the next destination where they will be
flying high in the sky again!
During the festival there will also be other
events like cultural performances in the evenings
as well as trade expo with the sales of handicrafts
and souvenirs for all to take home. Bintulu with its
multi-ethnic diversity of people is a great destination for
everyone to try out these different cuisines as well as
dance performances and costumes.

ncreasingly popular
worldwide following its
introduction in 2010, the
physical adventure game
Escape Room lets players
use critical thinking and teamwork
to solve puzzles, logic questions
and find clues to help them escape
a locked room within a given time
frame. Suitable for all ages, the
game is perfect for company team
building, friends and families as well
as tourists and travellers.
Maze Escape Room and Xcape
Mansion brought the thrill of the
game to Miri, and upped the ante by
pioneering their own unique escape
room set-up, with 100% original
themes and ideas by local talents
from Miri instead of going with what
other franchise outlets already have.
“We’ve managed to attract various
kinds of customers since our opening in
January 2015. Maze is the first operator
in Miri and Xcape is the second,” said
Danny of Maze Escape Room.
“We are able to collaborate with
each other despite being two
different managements because
we think that good games aren’t
competitors. We are inventors and
we share ideas, and we are different
from other escape rooms.”
“Much effort has been put into our
latest version of the game to create
a distinctive feel and environment for
extreme excitement that go beyond
just solving clues and puzzles,”
he continued. “We have gone to
another level as we have been
constantly improving and upgrading.
We are different now from when
we just started 6 months ago. Our
environments are more aggressive,
and reviews from gamers say that
our games are more realistic and
hardcore in many ways. Some
players even cried during the game.”
Maze Escape Room and Xcape
Mansion feature haunted house with
escape room concept, which is very
effective in giving players a good feel
of its eeriness and mystery.
Asked if the Escape Room trend
would catch on with Mirians, he
replied, “Sure it will eventually,
because there will be increase of
games with new themes to be
introduced every two months.”
“We have six existing games, namely
Mystery of Ah Lai, Mystery of Ah Lai
chapter 2, Play with me, Prison break
version 2, Chipmunks rescue and
Broken, all of which are exciting in their
own way. We will also have a new
game very soon, called Lost in maze.
As for Xcape Mansion, they have five
exciting games which are Dark well,
Clown, Crazy lab, Headless corpse and
Prison,” said Danny.

Importance of
Early Childhood
Education
W
hat do
modern day
parents want
for their
children?
More accurately, what do our
children need to survive better in the
future generation?
• Excellence in whatever they are
good at
• Be happy and contented in their life
• Lead healthy lives
• Strong body and mind
• Be good and useful people of
high morality and good values
This is an exhaustive list but possible
to achieve. We need to discover what
the child is good at to develop and
train them further. We identify this as
the child’s emerging interest.
We can achieve this by closely
observing the child’s interest in play.
Different plays indicate interests in
different areas. If the child spends
hours on blocks, they would be
interested in developing more logical
forms of intelligence. Once the
teachers identify this, he or she can
assist the child by developing more
logical based learning. On the other
hand, a child that spends many
hours observing insects, animals, or
plants, they could be interested in
learning more about zoology and
plantology. Similarly, teachers can
playing outside and having at least
20 minutes of physical activities
daily can increase a child’s ability
to excel, absorb, retain and develop
further. Simply exercise of crossing

elbow to the left knee will increase
the left and right brain connectivity.

plan to nurture and
develop this learning
interest further.
Emerging interests
are ever changing in a
human, and especially so
in a child. The success of
this type of earning is to
look for Early Childhood
Education Centres
with having very low
number of children
to teacher ratios. The
child’s emerging interest
will immediately be
picked up by the teachers
and developed further
to enhance the child’s
learning through play.
Happy and contented adults usually
have good emotional and cognitive
development as a child. Between
the ages of 1 to 5, the child learns
how to identify their emotions and
feelings. When they succeed, they
develop further by learning how to
manage these emotions and feelings.
The easiest management strategy
is to simply ignore this. Sometimes
this may not work. Further complex
management strategies can range
from overcoming the emotions to
move forward and finding a positive
solution; to praying and exercising.
Children need enough fresh air and
physical activities. Studies show that
The progressive society pride
themselves with having a community
of high morale and moral. This can be
achieved by imparting fundamental
good values to the children. Parents
and family will impart this throughout
their lifetime to the children.
Having to reinforce these values in
school makes the children grow to
remember the importance of these
values in their lives.

Herman Lukas
“I
am so thankful that I took up
the 1Azam programme for
photography and photoshop
as it has changed my life and
also for my family! Previously, I did everything,
cutting grass, construction work painting,
anything that will pay for daily wages and
life was hard. Now, at least I can additionally
earn RM800 and above per month with my
photography work for weddings, graduations
and birthday celebrations in kampung as well
as family homes,” said Herman cheerfully.
The father of three, with children ranging in
ages from 8 – 12, now move from event to
functions wherever he is commissioned to be
the photographer for the occasions.
“Hopefully, my success will spur others to take up
the various courses offered by 1Azam to provide
skills and training to those who wish to improve
their lives by adopting new skills. I put in a lot of
time and more importantly, listen attentively to
customers comments on my pictures to further
improve myself. Some are very critical but most
are very helpful and sincere to point out how I
could improve. Now I even look at newspapers,
books and magazines on photo shoots to get
new ideas and learn more about the trade to
further my skills,” he stated humbly.

F
resh from school after finishing Form Five,
Andrew was clueless about photography
about a year ago until he took up the
1Azam photography course. Initially he was
a shy, soft-spoken boy as he had practically no skills at
all, a period he called the ‘most difficult time of my life!’
“It was really hard as I was struggling to learn about
cameras and taking pictures in the group. I was always
quiet which makes it more difficult to learn and this is
one thing I hope others will not follow. You need to ask
questions whenever you are not sure and not be afraid
as this is the best way to overcome shyness and learn
self confidence,” said the young Andrew who now
earns RM800 or more per month for his work.
“I now take photos for events as well as do marketing
like selling pictures from events and functions where
I attend. All these business skills I picked up from the
course so I certainly recommend young school leavers
who have no trainings to try out the courses,” he
enthused. “You never know what you are capable of
until you try something new!” was his parting advice.

It’s Time to Get a
S
tudies have shown that
regular mammogram
screenings help reduce
fatalities in breast cancer, the most
common cancer in women.
In recognising this, the Ministry of
Women, Family and Community
Development through the National
Population and Family Development
Board (LPPKN) has introduced the
Mammogram Screening Subsidized
Programme where Malaysian women
can go for free mammogram
screening at government hospitals
and participating private hospitals and
health centres throughout the country.
In Sarawak, women can drop by
Normah Medical Specialist Centre
(NMSC), the first private hospital
here to offer the programme, to
sign themselves up for the free
screening initiative.
According to NMSC Chief Radiographer
Lau Kim Lim, women who qualify
for the free mammogram screening
must be Malaysian or permanent
resident aged 40 year old and above
and monthly household income of
RM10,000.00 and below.
“They can just walk in to register
themselves. After registration, patient
will have free basic assessment by
our nurses before the mammogram
examinations,” he said, adding that
patients must bring along their MyKad
and previous breast scans (if any).
“Prior to the screening, it is
recommended that patients do not
wear any deodorant, talcum powder
or lotion under their arms as these
can appear on the X-ray film as
calcium spots.”
The mammogram procedure, Lau
explained, usually take within 20
minutes at the hospital’s Diagnostic
Imaging Department where a
trained woman Radiographer will
position the patient to produce the
mammogram images of both breasts
in different angulations.
“The breasts will be placed on a special
imaging plate of the machine and
compressed with a peddle to even
out the breast thickness so that all
breast tissue can be visualized by the
Radiologist, allowing the use of lower
X-ray dose (approximately comparable
to 7 weeks of natural background
radiation) since a thinner amount of
breast tissue is being imaged, and to
stabilize the breast to eliminate blurring
of the image caused by motion.
“When the mammogram is
completed, patients will be called to
collect their results from their breast
screening clinic after two weeks,”
he said. It is not uncommon to have
breasts ultrasound scan as suggested
by Radiologist after receiving the
mammogram results in order to
confirm some complex mammogram
findings. The post LPPKN mammogram
breasts ultrasound will be covered by
LPPKN as well.
He also advised pregnant women or
those who are breastfeeding to refrain
from undergoing mammograms.
“Mammogram screening
plays a central part
in early detection of
breast cancers and it is
recommended that women
aged 40 and above go
for regular screening
annually.” Lau further reassured
patients that, Normal Medical Centre
is a JCI accredited hospital, therefore
all procedures are monitored and
audited to ensure quality and
patient’s safety are well taken care of.

ACT ‘F.A.S.T’
after the Brain
Attack!!!
E
very hour, six Malaysians
are diagnosed with stroke
or brain attack (1), a
condition caused by insufficient
blood supply to part of the brain,
leading to brain damage.
Stroke is the third largest cause of
death in Malaysia after heart disease
and cancer (2), and the second leading
cause of death worldwide (3). Stroke
is now a global epidemic. Over the
past four decades new cases of stroke
in low-income and middle-income
countries, such as Malaysia, has
exceeded the stroke incidence rates in
high-income countries (4). Around 1530% of stroke patients are permanently
disabled after their stroke (5).
Consultant Neurologist
and Physician, Dr Chai
Chiun Hian of Kuching
Specialist Hospital
explains that there are
2 main types of stroke:
Ischaemic stroke: which is the most
common type of stroke and accounts
for about 80% of stroke, caused by
blockage of blood vessels supplying
the brain; Haemorrhagic stroke: less
common type of stroke, accounting
for the remaining 20% of stroke,
due to rupture or burst of weakened
blood vessel, leading to bleeding
inside the brain. And there is also a
mini-stroke called Transient Ischaemic
Attack, which is caused by temporary
interruption of blood supply to area
of the brain and patient develops
symptoms of stroke which last less than
24 hours with full recovery.
“Stroke symptoms occur suddenly
and could happen anytime of the day
although some may noticed it when
waking from sleep.” According to Dr
Chai, some of the common symptoms
of strokes are:
• Numbness, weakness, or both
over one-side of the body
• Facial asymmetry
• Difficulty talking, slurred speech, or
difficulty in understanding speech
• Blurring of vision in one or both eyes
• Dizziness, nausea or vomiting
• Severe headache or confusion
“When you suspect someone has
a stroke, you must ‘ACT F.A.S.T’
because each minute of delay in
treatment for large ischaemic stroke
will results in 1.9 million brain cells
loss, which is equivalent to 3.1 week
of accelerated aging (6). The acronym
‘F.A.S.T’ stands for ‘Face Droops’,
‘Arm Drifts’, ‘Speech Slurs’, ‘Time is

patient to hospital immediately”.

told Borneo Talk, patient would also

Health Awareness
The health
tea for
diabetics
D
iabetes is an ever growing
health problem affecting
the society, whereby
patients have high levels of glucose
in their blood.
GlucosCare International Pte Ltd,
a company specialising in the
research and development of
glucose-management herbal tea
products, introduces GlucosCare®
Tea, scientifically formulated to help
regulate and control blood sugar
levels in human body.
“GlucosCare® Tea is a sugar-blocking
health tea for diabetics that consists of
two components - Gymnema Sylvestre
and Camellia Sinensis,” GlucosCare’s
Assistant Marketing Manager, Kelly
Leong said in a teleconference
interview with Borneo Talk.
Found mainly in the forests of Australia
and South Asia, Gymnema Sylvestre
(Sanskrit for ‘Sugar Destroyer’) has
been used centuries in South Asia to
control blood sugar level. Camellia
Sinensis on the other hand, is added as
an antioxidant agent. Also known as
green tea, it helps in the maintenance
of cells and tissues.
“How it works is that it reduces the
absorption of sugar in the small
intestine and in doing so helps to retain
the levels of sugar in our body,” she
continued, adding that reduced levels
of sugar in the bloodstream would also
result in weight loss as excessive sugar
would not be absorbed by the body
and turned into fat.
“Weight watchers and those who
are health conscious can also benefit
from this tea, whereby it can help
them to slim down especially in the
tummy area. We have a number of
testimonials in which the tea is said
to have helped some people to slim
down,” Kelly said.
GlucosCare® Tea, she said, can also
help to restore the function of human’s
pancreas, “which means it regulates
the production of insulin levels in the
human body so that more glucose
would be used up as energy instead of
staying in the bloodstream.”
“A clinical study conducted at HUSM
(Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia) in
2013, involving 64 diabetes patients,
found the tea to be effective in
lowering blood sugar levels by about
13% on average after three months of
consumption,” Kelly disclosed.
“This is a halal tea, which means
Muslims can consume it too,” she
added. GlucosCare® Tea is produced
under safe and hygienic conditions
in a GMP (Good Manufacturing
Practice) certified factory which
based in Johor Bahru. In additions,
stringent quality control is conducted
before the product is distributed
to over 20 countries worldwide,
including Hong Kong, New Zealand,
Kuwait, Serbia and Poland.
The tea is not recommended
for consumption by pregnant or
lactating women and children under
12 years of age.

C
orned beef is a local
favourite in Sarawak,
Sabah and Brunei, and
is used in many dishes
including noodles,
sandwiches, murtabak and rice dishes.
Some even like it simple, adding only
big onion slices to it and cooking
them in a pan until the onion slices
become tender and sweet and their
aroma as well as flavours are infused
in the corned beef.
Pawada Food Industries Sdn Bhd
introduces its premium quality
corned beef, which is made from 100
percent beef and is certified halal.
This contributes to a rich, meaty taste
compared to corned beef that is made
using part meat and part filler.
For those who are not too fond on
beef, Pawada has also come out
with corned mutton, which is also
produced using quality mutton and
other high quality ingredients.
Both Pawada’s corned beef and
corned mutton are produced in
the company’s new factory located
in Batu Caves, Selangor, and are
both halal-certified and safe for

in 340g and 140g cans for greater

Delightful, affordable
Thai cuisine at Sukhumvit
Restaurant Kuching
L
ocated at the
Riveredge
Commercial
Centre in Petra
Jaya, Sukhumvit
Restaurant Kuching is the first branch
of the KL-based Thai restaurant to
open outside of K uala Lumpur.
True to its name Sukhumvit, which
is Thai for “relax” (Sukhumvit is also
the name of the longest road in
Bangkok, Thailand), the restaurant
offers a relaxing ambiance with its
open concept, earth-toned tiles on
the walls, white tables and chairs
and a great view right outside. Most
importantly, the restaurant serves
some of the best, most authentic
Thai cuisines in Kuching.
Since it opened in June 2014,
Sukhumvit Restaurant Kuching has
done well in maintaining its food
quality, thanks to highly skilled chefs
from Thailand, and its promise of
fast serving time after ordering.
With over 100 items on the
menu to choose from, these few
recommendations might set you off
to a good start.
Siakap Stim Limau is a great choice.
Only the freshest seabass is used for
this dish, and lime is the main flavour
component, giving it just enough
acidity to cut through the fattiness of
the fish. Highly recommended.
Those who prefer their fish fried and
smothered in a sweet and sour sauce
may opt for Siakap Tiga Rasa instead.
Deep fried to a perfect crisp without
the fish being overcooked, the seabass
is crunchy on the outside and tender
inside. A delightful 3-flavour sauce
covers the fish just enough to allow the
natural flavour of the fish to stand out.
Tomyam Sukhumvit is highly
addictive and is easily one of the
best in Kuching. It comes with crab,
shrimp and squid among others, and
is spicy enough to have you sweating
while you enjoy every bit of it.
Homok is a unique dish that resembles
the famous otak-otak, but much more
flavourful. It is a blend of different
kinds of seafood, mixed with aromatic
spices and wrapped in tin foil. The dish
is on fire… Literally! Give it a try and
you’ll see what that means.
Other must-trys on your first visit could
also include Telur Raja, Kailan Ikan
Masin, Ayam Goreng Daun Limau
and a Kerabu dish that allows you to
choose what ingredients you want in it.
For the wonderful food they offer,
customers will be surprised at how
affordable it is to dine at Sukhumvit
Restaurant Kuching. Choose from
set menus, a la carte or buffet.
Sukhumvit Restaurant
Kuching is located at Lot
13335/13336, No. 19 & 20, Section 65,
KTLD, Riveredge Commercial Centre,
Jalan Merdeka, Petra Jaya. It opens from
11.30am to 2.30pm, and 6pm to 10pm
on Monday to Thursday, 2pm to 10pm
on Friday. For more information, call the

Kuching’s
favourite

shop for
generations
where you will find Loke Chicken
Rice, which is ironically famous for its
Char Siew Pork more than anything
else in the “menu”. Finding the
place is a breeze, as it is the only
eating outlet with a big “Planta”
sign on the stall at the entrance of
the coffee shop along that stretch.
Loke Chicken Rice started out as a
Chinese restaurant in Jalan Padungan,
which was set up after the end of
the Japanese Occupation here. With
the passing of the owner many years
later, the restaurant operations came
to a halt but the chicken rice business
remained. Loke Chicken Rice moved
to its present location seven years
ago, and is now managed by the late
founder’s grandson. In their typical
dish of Char Siew Pork Rice, the
space and easier access, at Padungan
Road, under a new name - Noodle
Descendents. But despite the new
location and name, the shop still
maintains the original ‘homemade’
taste of its food.
N
oodle Descendents is
perhaps one of the most
legendary food outlets in
Kuching. The family-run business
started in 1957, in a small corner shop
at Bishop Gate in Carpenter Street.
The shop, then named Sin Min Joo,
was famous for its
noodles and mixed
pork soup. So
famous in fact, that
customers would
have to wait up to
an hour for their
orders to arrive.
Today, the shop
serves up its famous noodles and
soup at its new location with bigger
Try their ‘Normal’ noodles in a choice
of mee, bee hoon, kway teow and
mee pok, tossed in a malt vinegar
and shallot oil sauce, and topped
with minced pork, fish cake, char
siew pork, fish ball and pork liver. It’s
a classic favourite well loved for its
savoury and slightly sharp flavours
and generous amount of topping.
BBQ pork is sliced into thick pieces
and served together with savoury
rice, along with clear soup, curry
gravy, sweet chilli sauce and belacan
(fermented shrimp paste) chilli dip.
The Char Siew Pork is juicy and has
a one-of-a-kind taste as well as
enticing aroma to it, which is why it
is notoriously famous.
Besides Char Siew Pork, there is of
course Steamed Chicken Rice, as well
as Pak Lo egg and meat, among other
things. The latter is also a famous item
among customers and is a must-try.
So for your Char Siew Pork fix, visit
Loke Chicken Rice at Kong Yik Café,
Jalan Ang Cheng Ho, Kuching. Loke
Chicken Rice opens from 9am to
2pm daily except Tuesday.
Otherwise, order your noodles plain
(mee kosong), along with a normal
or large bowl of delicious and hearty
mixed pork soup, which includes pork
meat and innards. Customers also
have the option of excluding some
items they don’t want to have in their
soup, and substitute noodles with
plain rice instead. The mixed pork
soup, also a favourite among the
locals for generations, is light while
the meat and innards are cooked to a
perfect doneness. One could not ask
for anything better.
First timers be warned though, as
you would need to wait in a long
queue just to get a seat at Noodle
Descendents. In some cases, you might
have to share a table with strangers.
And then there is the long waiting time
before you can finally enjoy your bowl
of the shop’s celebrated noodles. The
good news is that most customers find
the long wait worthwhile.
Noodle Descendents is located at
Ground Floor Lot 18, Padungan
Road, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak. It
opens daily from 7.30am to 3.30pm.

A culinary
adventure of
Sri Aman
Sri Aman in Sarawak is famous not only for its annual Pesta Benak but its culinary
treasures as well. Here are some of the district’s famous dishes you ought to give
a try, and one that is worth stopping by for on the way to Sri Aman.
Sungai Tenggang’s Famous
Pak Lo Duck
Mui Fah is home to one of the best Pak Lo ducks in these parts.
Located at a row of shophouses less than an hour before you reach
Lachau, the coffee shop attracts visitors from faraway places, hungry
for their decades-long family culinary legacy.
Mr Then started his Pak Lo duck business 32 years ago, following
advice from his mother. The recipe is closely guarded, and the end
result is a Pak Lo duck that is surprisingly succulent and tender. The
skin is springy and pleasantly rich without being overwhelmingly fatty,
and the whole dish is just bursting with flavour. The two-hour cooking
time also results in an intensely meaty sauce that is not overly sweet,
and whose smell is simply enticing.
Sri Aman’s ‘Char
Kueh Goreng’
Sri Aman’s famous ‘Char Kueh Goreng’ or fried rice cake can be
found at a stall in a coffee shop with yellow walls and blue awning
near the famous Sri Aman market. The stall faces the road and has a
red sign with white wordings that read ‘Char Kueh Goreng’.
Stall owner Poh Choo Ngang has been selling his char kueh for 28 years
now, although his mother started the business 45 years ago near the Sri
Aman Waterfront. Poh’s char kueh has been made traditionally since the
70s. Choose from salty or sweet char kueh. The former is fried with soy
sauce, egg and some diced turnip. The sweet variety contains palm sugar
or ‘gula apong’ and has the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. Simple
yet flavourful, Poh’s fried char kueh is worth the long trip. “A lot of the
customers like to ‘tapau’ (take away) instead of enjoying the char kueh
here. Tourists even bring them overseas,” he said.
Poh sells his fried char kueh starting 6.30pm daily except Sundays,
and closes when there are no more customers.

Mr Tay’s Claypot
Noodles
Tay Buan Teng’s noodle stall (no. 33), located right
next to Ah Huat Seafood Centre on the upper
floor food court at the Sri Aman market, has
been dishing out the famous claypot noodle, a
dish of deep fried noodle in a claypot with their
special gravy, since the market opened in 1995.
The dish is complemented with a spicy, delicious
homemade chilli sauce that brings out the dish’s full flavours. “My
mum started the business about 20 years ago. The stall is now operated
by the second generation of the family,” Tay shared with Borneo Talk.
“There are three types to choose from - regular, pork special and tomato
special,” he said, adding that the sauces are a closely guarded family
secret. Local customers frequent Tay’s noodle stall for breakfast, lunch
and dinner, and also from outstation and as far as West Malaysia.
The stall opens from 6.30am to 12pm, and from 4.30pm to 9pm
every day except Wednesday.
Fah Lok Cafe’s Satay
Mee
Every place has its own signature dish. Sri Aman
has its Satay Mee (Satay Noodles). And Mr Chung,
whose parents’ satay business back in those days
inspired his famous dish, created the original Satay
Mee back in 1979. Many have since tried to come
up with their version of the dish but none can
come close to the real deal.
Mr Chung’s Satay Noodle is crispy and fragrant, and is smothered in
a wonderful homemade satay sauce, and topped with pork.
Mr Chung’s coffee shop, located at an old shop lot at the Sri Aman
Waterfront, opens from 7am to about 1pm. The locals will be glad to
help you out with directions.
Ah Seng’s Famous
Char Kway Teow
Taking over from his father, who started selling
char kway teow some 40 years ago; Ah Seng
continues to serve his dad’s famous dish for
about 18 years now.
Extremely famous among visitors who come all
the way from Kuching, Ah Seng’s char kway teow
is special because he uses palm sugar (gula apong)
to add an extra depth of flavour to the dish, and does not add MSG into
his cooking. He tops his char kway teow with heaps of pre-cooked pork
slices and serves the dish with his famous blended chilli.
Ah Seng’s char kway teow is available between 7am and 11am at his
stall in Sri Aman’s famous coffee shop Golden Café.

A host of activities were held during
the Pesta Benak 2015, including
the Batang Lupar Regatta, benak
exhibition, Ms. Tourism Benak, Mr
Benak, a petanque competition, an
all-day bazaar and many more.
But the real star of the whole show
was the much-anticipated tidal
bore, whose arrival seemed to have
had everyone at a standstill as they
witnessed the natural phenomenon
happen before their very eyes.
Although not as high this year
as everyone had anticipated, the
experience was nonetheless rewarding.
This year’s Pesta Benak was also a
particularly special one, as it saw the
launching of the Fort Alice Museum
by the Chief Minister. The museum
is a 150-year-old tropical fort built
by the Brookes, and restored to its
former glory at a cost of RM5 million.

Building on
BT Visit
Success
Photo call with Mr. Martin Ang (centre) and media partners from East Malaysia.
M
alaysia’s iconic brand,
Julie’s aims high. In line
with their believes in
sharing love and their achievements,
Perfect Food Manufacturing Sdn Bhd
recently invited the East Malaysian
media counterpart to share Julie’s
biscuit story to success. Borneo Talk was
one of the privilege media partners.
As profoundly stated by its Director,
Mr Martin Ang, “Building a brand
name is hard enough but building on
success is even harder.”
“Since we started in 1981, we have
always stayed on course on what we
want to do, focusing on our strength
and always innovating with new ideas
and demands from the market. Hygiene
is an integral part of our business
model and this has led to our 2014
collaboration with Hershey’s to start
making six different ranges of chocolate
biscuits for ten ASEAN nations including
Taiwan and Mongolia. This venture
shows that we have gained respect
from an international brand to team
with us for greater market access and
also for a rewarding future together,”
he stated with a smile.
Currently, Perfect Food Manufacturing
has been certified under ISO
9001:2008, GMP, HACCP and OHSAS
which enabled the company to export
to nations like Japan, Europe and
USA. The company is also Malaysia’s
largest exporter of cookies the world
over, covering 70 countries in South
East Asia, Asia Pacific, Africa, America
and the Middle East. With optimistic
outlook for the coming years, the
company has set a target of achieving
a turnover of RM500 million by 2020
with 100 nations in its list of countries
that it exports to.
“We were the first company
to individually wrap biscuits
so that customers would not
have to look for containers
to store the biscuits after
opening the box; in 2013 we
introduced Julie’s One Bite’s
range of biscuits in a cup
that earned us the Industry
Excellence Award at the
5th Asean-BAC Malaysia
Business Awards,” Martin
happily shared. “Then we achieved
further success by bagging the World
Quality Commitment Award 2014
in Paris and earlier this year, we also
won the Singapore Women’s Weekly
Domestic Diva 2015 Awards and
Influential Brands Awards.
“Perfect Food Manufacturing is also a
company, which strongly believes in its
responsibility towards its employees,
customers and society by undertaking
projects leading towards food safety,
quality, employee welfare, maintaining
high ethical standards leading to the
betterment of our society, that’s why
we started “share the love” campaign
among the community and at the same
time recognizing the “best in you”
campaign which we are very passionate
and proud of. At Julie’s we baked with
love,” concluded Martin proudly.

Bringing
compassion
to work
Rodziah’s recent
appointment as GM of BDA
promises to be a fruitful one
H
aving being
appointed
as General
Manager
for Bintulu
Development Authority (BDA)
recently, Rodziah Morshidi was
understandably happy and grateful
for being the first woman to be
appointed to the position. Her
previous stint at BDA also provided
her a sound understanding of the
issues at hand which certainly made a
second stint much easier, so it seems!
“I wish that was the case!” she stated
cheerfully in response. “However,
there are many things going on in
Bintulu and at BDA (since I left in
1999) that are quite taxing to anyone
helming the Management of BDA
now. Besides having to deal with
issues and challenges of people’s rising
expectations for its municipal services,
equally challenging is to deal with all
the development issues relating to
the area as some are very technical,
critical and urgent ones too, obviously
referring to the robust development
of the Samalaju Industrial Park. It is
therefore obvious that being a non
technical person, I certainly do need
a lot of inputs from fellow colleagues
and stakeholders to provide answers
to these issues. Social issues, especially
housing needs for lower income
families in Bintulu are issues that I have
previously handled and will continue
to find answers for,” she added.
Currently she has been in consultation
with developers and NGOs to seek
solutions for those lower income
groups who find owning houses in
Bintulu a dream impossible.
For Rodziah, work must always be
something that makes a person happy,
that is in an environment that you can
share your skills and learn from others.
She acknowledged that women in
particular, have more difficulties being
both mothers and career professionals
but somehow, they managed!
“Men tend to be more career focused
than women, and from my observation
over the years, and I even know
of some who had forgone career
advancements in order to be with their
families. I usually advise young women
to focus on what they are good at and
what they want to do so that they
can be happy and have rewarding
careers. On my part I will do my best
with the support from my team at BDA
and we are confident of meeting the
expectations of the people in Bintulu.
My constant reminder to all staff of
BDA is to always serve members of the
public well because to serve them well
is the very essence of our existence,”
she stated empathetically.
“It is certain that I will be scrutinized
more being the first woman on the
job, but that doesn’t worry me.
My background in social welfare,
complemented by my post graduate
degree in Project Management will
serve me very well in this new job as we
need compassion in the workplace for
the team to work together to serve the
public better, while maintaining a high
level of professionalism and integrity
to maintain focus and emphathy in
dispensing our duties as civil servants.
Compassion will also make it easier
for us to deal with the public that we
serve for us to always strive to solve
issues using our knowledge as well
as social skills. With the number of
women making it to the top in many
Asean countries and elsewhere, in the
corporate world, I believe that it should
be no different in Malaysia!” she
beamed. She concluded by reiterating
that the tag line, “Together we make
Bintulu better” should start with all
staff of BDA.

W
hile most people would be pleased with sweet
smell of success, Martin Ang is not resting on
his laurels; he is still pursuing more success for
the iconic Malaysian biscuit brand Julie’s in the national and
international markets.
“However, I am now more focused on the emerging younger
executives in the company. When we started it was more on
building our success in the local market and then our export
market. I believe that in everything we do, we must remain
focused and not loose direction; this is common for many
who enjoyed brief success and started tinkering with other
ventures not linked directly with the main business model,
which eventually lead to failures. I always emphasize to my
young executives to stay focused and our initial group of just
a handful has now increased to over twenty people in the
overseas market section,” commented Martin.
Stay
Focused
Martin’s 28 years in the business is telling; he has seen the
innovations necessary for the company’s success which also
came from listening to market demands and preferences as
well as listening to the younger generations of executives who
travel to open new markets.
“I strongly believe that there is no short cut to success; one must
have patience, passion and perseverance as success doesn’t happen
overnight. Over the course one will make mistakes and these are
part of the learning curves, as the person will learn from them. By
cultivating good values for oneself, we set the example for others
to follow. This is what I try to do in the company and it has rubbed
onto the younger executives coming along. Many of them have
started with us when fresh out of school and are still with us as we
always give recognition for talent and hard working individuals. We
must always show respect as well as reward for these
good people and continue to mentor them as their
success is also our success,” he smilingly said.
On the part of competitors, Martin just brushed
this aside, preferring to see them as complementary
agents pushing each other to greater success. The
main reason he gave is that the international market
is so large there is hardly any competition which will
be detrimental to the producers; rather each should
focused on their success story and continue to
innovate from these successes.
“I am always first to state that I come from Malaysia whenever I
go for trips overseas. To me selling the country is just as important
as selling my brand as over time people the world over will realize
that Malaysia is a producer of good food products which will
benefit all of us. It is something that we should all do to educate
others about our nation and ourselves, as this will bring the world
closer to one another. Hopefully, we will all emerge for the better
in the years ahead!” he opined.
