PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It’s all about
Value
in 1963 andrew smith graduated from concordia. In 2005
Andy began his service to Concordia as a regent of the university.
Between 1963 and 2005, God used Andy in many ways: teacher in
Lutheran and public schools, corporate executive, husband, father,
son, brother, grandfather and Christian layperson.
Andy has traveled the world, met with national and
international leaders, bought and sold companies, led a Fortune
500 company, forgotten more about Abraham Lincoln and the
Civil War than most will ever know, inspired employees and
enjoyed life and family.
Recently, Andy shared with me the value of his Concordia
education. He said, “When I think of my sons and the higher
education they received, I realize they received an outstanding
academic education. However, when I compare the education
they received to the education I received at Concordia there is a
tremendous difference. I received a life-changing education. I wish
they had too.”
With so much discussion of the cost of education, it’s wonderful
to hear a lesson of its incredible, sometimes inestimable value.
With Andy, I believe the greatest value of a Concordia education
is the life-changing impact it has on the lives of our students and
upon the lives of those who are touched by our alumni.
I can think of nothing more valuable than the work we do to
prepare students to lead and serve in the church and world. The
articles about alumni Scott Schmieding and Ron Royuk in this
edition of the Broadcaster are inspiring stories of persons whose
lives have been changed by catastrophic circumstances. Yet the
circumstances have given them incredible opportunities to live,
witness and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.
As we continue to provide our students the best Lutheran,
Christian education possible, please join us in thanking God
for all He is doing to provide a life-changing education for our
students. Please support us with prayers, gifts and words of
encouragement as together we work to make a life-changing
education available to the current generation of Andrew Smiths.
Sincerely,
Brian L. Friedrich

After the Storm
After the Storm: Lessons of faith on the Gulf Coast
Ron Royuk HS ‘59 CO ’63, principal
at Lutheran High School in Metairie,
La., was able to assess damage to the
school early in September 2006.
Destruction caused by Hurricane
Katrina in Slidell, La. The path of
destruction is over 150 miles wide.
Thirty-eight LCMS Southern District
congregations and 13 Lutheran schools
experienced damage or destruction
from Katrina.

than six feet of water in it.

on sunday, aug. 28, rev. scott schmieding ´87 was
putting things away in his storage shed, clearing his yard
of anything that might be blown away by Hurricane
Katrina. He was not frightened, just being prudent. As
senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran in Baton Rouge, La.,
he had led his congregation in worship that morning as
usual. The threat of big storms, even hurricanes, is a part
of life when you live near the Gulf Coast. News reports
had Hurricane Katrina on the way, but it was not a time
to panic.
Ron Royuk HS ‘59 CO ‘63, principal at Lutheran
High School in Metairie, La., a suburb of New Orleans,
also made what seemed to be routine preparations for
a hurricane. “In this area we are used to seeing tropical
storms develop,” said Royuk. “You keep an eye on them
and you sort of learn to take it in stride.”
Hurricane Ivan had made a similar threat to the region
just the year before and, thanks to a turn in the storm
before landfall, New Orleans and Baton Rouge received
only light damage. Seeing the approach of the storm and
wanting to be cautious, Royuk called off two days of
classes in advance. Rev. Schmieding welcomed children
and staff from the New Orleans-based Bethlehem
Children’s Center to stay in the gymnasium, just as they
had last year when Ivan threatened.
Unlike Ivan, however, Hurricane Katrina delivered.
Katrina was a monstrous Category 5 hurricane before it
made its Louisiana landfall. Estimates put the damage
costs over $100 billion and the number of dead in the
hundreds. With the breach of several New Orleans levees,
the storm leveraged its damage even further, flooding
much of the city and turning hundreds of thousands of
her citizens into refugees.
Some of the 70 new students who enrolled at
Baton Rouge Lutheran School after Hurricane
Katrina. Gordon Schamber ‘73 is principal.
LHS’s two-day break from classes turned into 24 lost
school days. The school did not re-open until Oct. 3.
Hurricane winds severely damaged the school’s roof and
pushed in exterior walls, exposing classrooms. The LHS
building also suffered water damage—not from flooding
like one might expect but because of rain that blew into
the building horizontally during the storm.
Royuk relocated to an office and housing provided by
friends at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball,
Texas, and started the process of gathering information
and contacting his scattered students and staff. Cell
phones turned out to be the key technology that still
linked together the dislocated students and staff. “Some
students were so gregarious that they had had cell phone
numbers of up to half of the student body in their
phones,” said Royuk. “Well, what a blessing that turned
out to be!”
Schmieding, in the meantime, had been able to
weather the storm at home with his family. Some 60
miles west of New Orleans, Baton Rouge had come
through it all relatively well. About half of the city had
temporarily lost power, but, unlike New Orleans, it was
functioning. The city’s population swelled by nearly
50 percent as refugees arrived. Schmieding and Trinity
Lutheran Church and School faced a surge of a different
kind since they were in an obvious position to help.
Trinity Baton Rouge attended to evacuees and those
displaced, offering free schooling and meals for any
displaced Lutheran students from New Orleans. Also
the LCMS Southern District Office moved to Baton
Rouge, to a house on property that Trinity planned to
use for expansion. “Chainsaw brigades” were sent out to
the churches and others in need of assistance. Displaced
families found refuge through the church, in some cases
literally taking sanctuary in the sanctuary. As LCMS
volunteers streamed in from the rest of the United States,
Associate Pastor Dave Buss helped guide them to where
they were needed.
Schmieding found lessons of faith in the experience.
“Our enrollment had been down a bit this year and we
had been disappointed by that. We had been praying,
‘God, please send us new students.’ We had no idea
our prayer would be answered in this way.” The school’s
offer of free tuition and meals brought in 70 displaced
students.
“We organized, but we did not have a plan,” said
Schmieding. “We worked as a team and simply went
forward taking steps of faith, making it up as we went,
playing it by ear, and sharing the hope of Jesus in both
tangible and spiritual ways.”
Schmieding describes being on the front lines of the
relief efforts as overwhelming—both because of the
unbelievable scale of the destruction and because of
the incredible national response and opportunity for
ministry. “Personally, I think I did more ministry in two
weeks after Katrina than I do on average for five years of
ministry,” he explained.
Royuk, whose own home was flooded, sees the blessing
amidst the destruction as well. Much has already been
done to help, but in reality the school and its students
and staff are on a long-term road to recovery. “I keep
telling everyone that God promised us that if we love
Him, all things work together for good. Sometimes that’s
hard to hang on to, but I keep encouraging people—God
can do it!”

VALUE FEATURE
It’s all about
Value
several members of concordia´s class of 2000 were
featured in a Broadcaster article shortly before their
graduation. At that time, they said they were “on a
mission” to share their strong commitment to our Lord
and make a difference in the lives of others. More than
five years later, their dedication to this ideal continues to
shine brightly.
In recent interviews, the graduates said that their
time at Concordia was an extremely valuable experience
because of the high-quality, personalized education
that prepared them for their calling, the moral and
ethical values that were reinforced, the extra-curricular
activities that were readily available, and the Christian
relationships they developed.
Lisa (Zielke) Hubbard
Lisa (Zielke) Hubbard
said a parental nudge led her
to a Concordia visit. “My
mom actually ‘made’ me visit
Concordia during my senior
year of high school. I had a
few friends from our church
attending and they showed me around, introduced me to
people...and the rest is history.”
Attending a Christian college was extremely important
for Hubbard, and in her professional life she has been
“flexible, knowing that I would run with whatever the
Lord brought my way.” So far the Lord has led her to
serve as a missionary and teacher in Hungary, a teacher
and master’s degree student at Concordia Seminary in St.
Louis, and a teacher in Wisconsin.
“While my education and experience in Seward served
as a springboard for my career and life, what I value
most about my time at Concordia are the relationships
I developed with faculty, staff and students. Some of my
best friends and most prized mentors come from my time
in Seward.”
Lisa and her husband Brad live in Schofield, Wis.,
where Brad serves as associate pastor at Mount Olive
Lutheran Church. The couple is anxiously awaiting the
6
birth of their first child, due in December.
Marty and Christin (Maxson) Senechal
By the time they graduated from Concordia in 2000,
Marty and Christin had been married for more than
two years. The couple got reacquainted at a kindergarten
reunion in Colorado Springs and found they were both
attending Concordia, and then fell in love.
Marty and Christin both came to Concordia
because of its respected teaching program, the Christcentered education it offered and because each of their
parents attended Concordia and spoke highly of their
experiences. They now serve as teachers in Omaha, Marty
teaching high school social studies at Concordia Lutheran
Junior/Senior High School, and Christin teaching fourth
grade at Bread of Life Lutheran School.
Christin said she tries to emulate a number of her
Concordia professors, especially Associate Professors
of Education Dr. Janell Uffelman and Dr. Rebecca
Fisher, and Emeritus Professor of Music, Dr. David
Held. “They treated all of their students so well and also
had a contagious enthusiasm that I try to reflect to my
students.”
Both Marty and Christin were involved in Concordia
Singers. Christin was also editor of the Tower and
Marty ran on the track team, an experience that he says
“has proven extremely valuable during my high school
coaching career.” Marty is a basketball and track coach
at Concordia in Omaha, while Christin is his assistant
coach on the basketball team.
Recently the Senechals started work toward their
master’s degrees at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
They are proud parents of one, a black and white
miniature dachshund, Snoopy.
David Battaglia
David Battaglia graduated
from Concordia in 2000
with a double major in
math and chemistry. He
then spent the next four
years on fellowships at the

University of Arkansas, from which he earned a doctorate
in physical chemistry in December 2004. Battaglia
now works at Nanomaterial and Nanofabrication
Laboratories (NN-Labs), a corporation that manufactures
and produces semiconductor metal and magnetic
nanoparticles. He has had seven works published and
earned two patents.
Battaglia says the four years he spent at Concordia
“better equipped me morally to be a better scientist and
person.” He says there is a pervasive feeling inside the
scientific community that scientists are too smart to have
faith in God. Battaglia continues to embrace his faith and
has now become the youngest elder in the history of his
congregation, St. John Lutheran in Fayetteville, Ark.
Battaglia’s time on Concordia’s campus was
“dominated” by extra-curricular activities, including
seasons on the baseball diamond. He credits activities
outside the chemistry lab as being a very important part
of his education.
Battaglia followed the path blazed by his parents,
sisters and cousins, all of whom attended Concordia.
David and his wife, Tara, were married in the summer
of 2004.

dr. lisa ashby, associate professor of english at
Concordia, traveled in early October with her black lab
Sadie to Texas Red Cross shelters and FEMA emergency
operations centers to interact with relief workers, hurricane survivors and military personnel.
“Animals provide a bridge for us to offer comfort and
assistance to individuals who have been through a crisis,”
said Ashby. Sadie and Ashby’s trip was organized through
Noah’s Canine Crisis Response Team from Nebraska and
Animal Assisted Crisis Response (AACR), a non-profit
organization based in Eugene, Ore.
The Texas trip lasted from Oct. 1-9. While there Ashby
encountered firefighters from New Mexico, EMTs from
Michigan and Humane Society volunteers from Maine.
“Anyone you could think of was down there trying to
help. It was really encouraging,”
She left heartened by the way people were cooperating
to rebuild their lives and optimistic about her four-legged
partner in crisis response.
“Overall, I was very proud of Sadie. We’re a young
team and this was our first time out for emergency
work,” she said. “I saw the trip as something my dog and
I can both offer back to the world.”
Kristin Jurchen, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical hygiene officer; Kristine
Kuhn, assistant professor of general studies;
Janice Mickle, adjunct professor of education
and Omaha Public School project coordinator;
Rachel Miller, head volleyball coach; Mary

Dr. Colleen Baade presented a paper entitled
“Dos siglos de música y fiesta en los monasterios femeninos de Toledo” (“Two Centu-

ries of Music and Festival in Toledo’s Female
Monasteries”) at the Sixth Annual International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music in
September. The site of the conference is the
historic Benedictine Convent of San Pedro de
las Dueñas, founded in the year 1048.
Dr. Jeffrey Blersch’s first CD, “Resounding Alleluias,” was released in September. To
celebrate the release, Blersch performed a recital
and hymn festival as part of the Lincoln Organ
Showcase concert series. He also performed a
hymn festival at St. Peter Lutheran Church in
Eastpointe, Mich., in October. The festival featured Blersch’s compositions and arrangements
and included a mass choir of over 100 members
from area church choirs as well as the concert
choir from Lutheran High in Westlake, Mich.
Emly Hartmann, a sophomore studying elementary
education, assists at the Festival. No other
Concordia event brings as many people to campus
as the Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival.
Nearly 40 percent of attendees this year were also
first-time visitors to the Concordia campus.
A celebration of reading and writing
“When children see an author or illustrator, the entire book
comes alive for them,” said Dr. Janell Uffelman, associate
professor of education at Concordia and director of the Plum
Creek Children’s Literacy Festival. “Children see themselves as
readers and writers as a result.”
Concordia’s Plum Creek Children’s Literacy Festival
provides a lively corrective to such thoughts. The festival,
bursting with activity and enjoyment, gives thousands
of children a chance each year to see some of America’s
finest children’s books authors and to participate in
activities inspired by reading. A literacy conference for
adults is the capstone for the festival, offering K-12
teachers and administrators from Nebraska and around
the nation a chance to learn from a field of literacy
experts and children’s books authors.
This year marked the tenth year of the festival. When
it started it was a one-day, one-author event serving
about 200 people; it has since grown to three days and
welcomes about 5,500 participants from 60 schools. The
reputation of the event is also spreading among authors
and illustrators, and the festival is booking its presenters
several years in advance.
Dozens of current and former Concordia professors
take part in planning and staffing the event. Concordia
students are also directly involved, including members
of Uffelman’s Foundations of Literacy course who lead
activities for children.
Uffelman, who has been festival leader since the event
began, credits a very dedicated committee, the addition
this year of Festival Coordinator Vikki Gremel, and a
group of faithful volunteers for the festival’s continued
success. “It’s a team effort,” said Uffelman. “Most
importantly, it is God blessing this festival. The growth of
this thing cannot logically be explained.”
Master’s literacy
programs available in
online and on-campus
format
The literacy festival and
undergraduate offerings at
Concordia are complemented by
a flourishing master’s program.
Concordia’s literacy master’s will
appeal to those vitally interested in literacy education,
such as regular classroom teachers and reading specialists.
Students in the graduate literacy program enroll in
courses taught through a combination of off-campus and
intensive on-campus learning experiences. Students in
the approximately 18 month program spend 13 days on
campus each summer to earn up to nine hours of credit.
Online courses are taught during the regular academic
year. For more information please call 1-800-535-5494,
ext. 7464, or visit: www.cune.edu/gradliteracy.
Dr. Robert D. Fiala, emeritus professor of history, has four photographs (of
Vietnam and Hong Kong) on exhibit at
the Chinese Culture Centre in Singapore
and one (of Japan) on exhibit at the
Bada Shoe Museum in Toronto. Fiala
has added a number of new essays and
photographs (on China and Laos) to his
Web site, Asian Historical Architecture

STUDENTS
Student Notes
There are 525 DCEs serving in
congregations of the LCMS,
and well over a third are
Concordia alumni.
Director of Christian education
students begin year-long
internships
concordia dce student jonathan kopecky (above, left), began his internship this January at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Reno, Nev. He and five
other DCE students met with their congregational supervisors in a November
orientation day on Concordia’s campus. John Scheuermann, seated right, is
the director of Christian education at St. Luke.
DCE interns serve in congregations as the capstone to their DCE ministry
preparation. Concordia places DCE interns twice each year, in the summer
and winter. Currently Concordia’s DCE program has 17 interns serving congregations in 13 states.
In the winner’s circle
it was a joyous bus ride back to the hotel on the
night that the University A Cappella Choir took third
place in the folk song portion of the International
Competition for Choirs in Spittal an der Drau,
Austria. The choir would eventually earn third place
overall in the competition as well.
The July 2005 competition took place at the end
of a 24-day tour that took the choir to Germany, the
Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Italy.
Dr. Kurt von Kampen, conductor of the University
A Cappella Choir since 1998, was very pleased with
the efforts of the singers. “The students represented
their Lord, Concordia University and the United
States of America very well. They sang with great spirit
and musicality.
“I think we all learned so much from meeting new
people, seeing historical sites and performing with
some of the greatest choirs throughout Europe in the
Spittal competition.”
Studying Abroad: Exploring Shakespeare
country Three Concordia students–Juli
Hirsch, Tim Zum Hofe and Tom Craig–studied
in England during the fall semester. Their
travels included tours of Stratford-uponAvon and Warwick. The lower right photo is

Concordia community responds to hurricane crisis,
Students raise more than $10,000 in their efforts
more than $10,000 has been raised to date at
Concordia, and the campus community continues to
respond to those afflicted by hurricanes in Louisiana,
Mississippi and Alabama. Student-led efforts began
almost immediately after Katrina hit, and what became
known as the Hurricane Relief Thinktank met weekly
during the fall to help develop and coordinate relief
efforts at Concordia.
Art supplies have been sent to the Gulf Coast,
hundreds of notes of prayer and encouragement were
gathered, 70 people donated blood, and more than 270
Bibles were collected. A relief trip organized by Mission
Minded Students, a Christian outreach organization on
campus, will travel to Metairie, La., during spring break,
March 5-11, 2006.
Prayer: Student groups have met every week to pray
for the people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
RAs have led their floors in prayer, and prayer buckets
were set around campus to write names of specific people
to pray for.
Chapel collections: Chapel offerings for the second
week of September were designated for Trinity Lutheran
Church, Baton Rouge, La. Chapel collections were
$1,912.79 and a special donation of $1,500 was sent in
by Concordia supporters. The money went to assist with
housing and educating displaced children.
Pancake feed: Concordia’s food service, run by
Chartwell’s Education Dining Services, hosted a pancake
feed that raised $1,000. These funds were designated for
Trinity Lutheran Church in Baton Rouge, La.
Art supplies: Students of the Department of Art along
with the Concordia Bookstore collected and sent boxes of
art supplies to the schools in Baton Rouge, La.
Notes of prayer and encouragement: The Dance
Team and Student Worship Committee joined together
and gave the community opportunity to write notes of
encouragement to victims. More than 230 notes were
written.
Bible collection: Presidents of Campus Red Cross,
Mission Minded Students, Peer Educators and Student
Worship Committee collected more than 270 Bibles. The
Bibles, notes of encouragement inside, were sent to Open
Door Mission in Omaha, which is hosting hurricane-displaced families, and via the Orphan Grain Train (OGT)
to the Gulf Coast.
CPH Warehouse Sale: Over 50 students volunteered
their time at the book sale. Proceeds from sale were
$1,050. Thrivent matched the funds raised up to $1,300.
These matched dollars were sent to the OGT where
$2,684 was matched again by LCMS World Relief.
The Octet: Eight students performed a benefit concert
and raised $334. This money was added to the proceeds
from the CPH warehouse sale and sent to OGT.
Canine Crisis Response Team: Dr. Lisa Ashby along
with her dog Sadie worked in Texas as a therapy dog team
with a Canine Crisis Response Team from Nebraska.
NAIA support: The Athletic Department dedicated
the admission fee for a football game to be sent to five
NAIA schools that were hit by the hurricane. Men’s CClub gave support by donating money as well. A total of
$1,000 was raised.
Blood donations: Members of the Pre-Sem Club
sponsored a blood drive during homecoming week,
where more than 70 students participated.

First Year
the concordia athletic
department welcomed two
new faces to the staff this fall.
Rachel Miller stepped in as the
head volleyball coach while Rob
Giesbrecht took the reigns of
the women’s soccer program.
“It was exciting to add
Rachel and Rob to our athletic
staff,” Athletic Director Grant
Schmidt said. “Rachel is second
to no one in her work ethic,
preparation and dedication.
Rob comes with a proven
record of developing successful
soccer programs.”
Rob Giesbrecht, new head women’s
soccer coach, led the Bulldogs to
their best GPAC record.
Under the guidance of Giesbrecht, the women’s soccer team
finished the 2005 campaign
with the most GPAC wins in
school history (7) and hosted a
GPAC postseason soccer game
for the first time at Concordia.
Overall, the Bulldogs finished
9-8-2 with a record of 7-3-1 in
the GPAC.
“I am proud of each of the
girls on our team—they played
their hearts out,” said Giesbrecht. “Hopefully we learn
from this experience (GPAC
playoffs) and move on. I am
already looking forward to next
season.”
Giesbrecht, a native of
Abbotsford, British Columbia,
came to Concordia with an
impressive coaching resume
that included serving as an
assistant coach for the women’s
14
soccer program at Trinity Western from 1999-2005. In 2004,
Trinity Western claimed the
Canadian Interuniversity Sports
(CIS) National Championship.
The CIS is the highest level of
university athletics in Canada.
He also served as head coach of
the Fraser Valley Action Football Club, a women’s Pacific
Coast Soccer League team.
Miller also found success
in her first year at the helm
as the volleyball team opened
the season a school-best 18-0.
During that span the Bulldogs were champions at three
tournaments. At season’s end
the Bulldogs were 24-11 overall
(9-7 GPAC).
“The team has accomplished
many of the goals we set at
the beginning of the season,”
said Miller. “I know I have
much to learn about coaching
but I am blessed to be able to
share my passion for volleyball,
along with my faith with the
young women who come to
Concordia.”
Head Coach Rachel Miller opened
her first season as head coach with
18 consecutive wins.
Miller is no stranger to
Bulldog volleyball as she was
a four-year letterwinner for
Concordia. She also brought
ample coaching experience,
having served as a club volleyball coach for the past seven
years. The past two years she
coached Nebraska ONE, one of
the premier club teams in the
state.
Andrew Walquist and Luka Thor
compete at the Griak Invite.
Both earned All-America status
at the national meet.
Bulldogs return to nationals
the bulldogs have been to
the national championship
meet so regularly that the
date for the national meet seems
more like an appointment in
their schedule than the hardearned destination that it is.
On this trip to the big race,
the women’s squad finished in
sixth place overall, and the men
took 11th. Two Concordia runners, Luka Thor and Andrew
Walquist, also earned All-America honors.
“The performances at nationals were great,” said Dr. Kregg
Einspahr, head coach. “Overall
I thought the men and women
had wonderful seasons.”
Running in his first NAIA
National Championship meet,
Thor crossed the finish line in
sixth place overall, with a time
of 24:49.05. Thor’s finish tied
the best by a Bulldog runner at
the NAIA Championship meet
in school history. In addition,
he is the first male freshman to
earn cross country All-America
honors for Concordia.
“Luka ran a tremendous
race,” Einspahr said. “He and
Andrew have typically run
together throughout races and
they did the same this weekend. Andrew is a leader and he
really helped Luka throughout
the year. They are two amazing
competitors and just all around
good guys.”
Walquist placed 12th overall
crossing tape in 25:02.25.
This marks the third time that
Walquist has been an NAIA
All-American. He is only the
second male Concordia runner
to earn the honor three times.
For the women, who were
one point shy of taking fifth
place, Jacquelyn Dibbern led
the way finishing in 41st place
overall. Freshman Renae Fowler
finished in 44th and Micah
Dubbs 52nd.
“To lose the runners that we
did last year and turn around
and place sixth at nationals is
great,” Einspahr added. “The
women did a good job of getting out early and that is a key
at this meet.”
This marked the 12th consecutive year that the women’s
team has competed at the
NAIA Championships. During
that span they have finished no
lower than 18th as a team, and
in the six previous years the
Bulldogs have had four national
runner-up finishes.
For the men it was the sixth
year in a row, and eight out of the
last ten, that they participated at
the NAIA Championships.
Women’s golf
The Concordia women’s golf team
wrapped up its season at the GPAC
Championship Meet finishing in
11th place.
Concordia posted its best 36-hole
score of the season (884) in the final
meet. Head Coach Carl Everts was
optimistic, as the team did accomplish
one primary goal, posting a team
score.
Freshman Natalie Swanda led the
Bulldogs, carding a 208, for 44th
place. It was the fifth meet out of
seven that Swanda paced Concordia.
“We improved this last meet,” added
Everts. “But there is still much work to
be done before next fall’s season.”
Men’s soccer
The men’s soccer team finished the
year 6-12-0 overall (3-8 GPAC). It
was a record that easily could have
been reversed as Concordia lost seven
games by one goal and played in five
overtime games.
“I can’t say enough about the effort
from the guys every time out,” said
Head Coach Art Busha. “To lose so
many close games was frustrating. But
we will build on our experiences for
next year.”
Seven different Bulldogs earned
all-conference honors, with junior
Micah Chaffee being named to the
second-team.
Football
It was a new look for the Bulldogs
during the 2005 campaign as two
new coordinators were on the sidelines. Scott Hoffman took over the
offensive coordinator position while
Steve Sirek returned to the staff as
defensive coordinator.
The Bulldogs faced a tough
challenge to start the season as the
University of Sioux Falls, ranked No.
3 in the NAIA at the time, came to
Seward. Concordia held its own,
leading after three quarters, before
falling 14-7. Concordia evened its
record at 1-1 defeating Hastings College 31-17. The Bulldogs then went
on a skid that saw them lose five in
a row, including four games by a
combined 20 points.
Concordia closed out the season
strong, winning three straight over
Doane, Nebraska Wesleyan and
Dakota Wesleyan.
The Bulldogs finished the season
4-6 overall (4-6 GPAC).
Jennifer Davis beats
her defender down
the field against York
College. Davis helped
lead the Bulldogs to a
GPAC Tournament
appearance in 2005.
Davis sets school records in senior season
jennifer davis, a senior from lincoln, neb., climbed to the top of the
Concordia women’s soccer career stat
charts in two categories during the 2005
season. She is now the all-time career
scorer in school history with 88 goals and
also has 206 points (goals and assists),
the most ever at Concordia.
“It is a blessing having a player with
Jen’s character on our team,” said Head
Coach Rob Geisbrecht.
“She is committed to the team, loves
her teammates and pursues excellence in
all she does.”
Davis scored the 65th goal of her
career against William Penn to tie previous record holder Angela Krueger, a 2002
graduate. In Concordia’s next contest
versus Ottawa, she found the back of
the net at the 56:49 mark, becoming the
all-time leading goal scorer in Bulldog
history.
In 2005 Davis scored 24 goals and
had eight assists on her way to first team
all-conference honors. It was the most
goals for Davis in one season, as she
scored 23 goals her freshman year, 23 as
a sophomore and 18 as a junior. During
the 2003 season Davis was named the
Co-GPAC/Scheels Player of the Year.
“Jen is a special player who possesses a
great balance of aggression and composure,” added Giesbrecht. “She works
incredibly hard, has great pace and can
finish. Jen was a vital player on our team
and will be missed next year.”
In addition to scoring goals, Davis
has also had her share of assists. Coming
into the season she had 19 on her career.
Her goal against Jamestown (ND) tied
her, again with Krueger, for tops on the
point chart at 155. Points are calculated by adding goals, which received a
value of two plus assists, which count as
one. Three minutes later, her assist on
teammate Gentri Brown’s goal put her
atop the career points category for the
Bulldogs.
Although her soccer career is finished,
her athletic career for the Bulldogs is not.
Davis is also a member of the Concordia
softball team, where last year she was an
honorable mention GPAC selection.

team into the Concordia Athletic Hall of Fame as a
part of Concordia’s annual homecoming activities. In
addition to being honored at a ceremony on Friday
night the inductees were also recognized during halftime of the Concordia-Morningside football game.
The Athletic Hall of Fame was established in
1994 to pay tribute and give recognition to former
athletes, coaches, teams and others who have made
exceptional contributions to the athletic programs at
Concordia. Honorees also exemplify the Christian
principles to which Concordia adheres. The 2005
inductees included the following:
Concordia’s 1951 FOOTBALL TEAM compiled
a record of 7-1, the best in Nebraska, and they were
champions of Central Church Conference title.
OMAR DITTMER, Orlando, Fla., compiled an
impressive 19 letters while competing in high school and collegiate
athletics between 1946 and 1954 at
Concordia. A multi-sport athlete,
he lettered in basketball, football
and track and field. He played in
the first all-Concordia basketball
tournament (CIT) and the Apple Bowl, the highlight
of high school football in Nebraska.
PHYLLIS LUEDDERS
MOL, Flint, Mich., made an
impact in all three of the sports
she played. A 1979 graduate,
she still holds the school record
(145’9”) in the javelin.
As a pitcher for the softball
team, she was an MVP during each season she
played. On the volleyball court she served as team
captain.
SIDNEY
MINES, a 1980
graduate currently residing
in Brisbane,
Australia, was
one of the top
scorers and
rebounders
for the men’s
basketball team
during his time
at Concordia.
He was also a
team MVP and an NAIA All-District selection.
Mines went on to play professionally in Australia
until 2002. While playing for the Generals of the
Australian Basketball League he set a single-game
club record of 76 points and 37 rebounds.
TRICIA KINDLE PINNEO,
Rising City, Neb., averaged 11.5
points and 4.6 assists during her
career on the hardwood. She also
earned all-conference, all-district
and NAIA All-American honors.
Pinneo, a 1994 Concordia
grad, shot over 40 percent from
the field as a guard and led the team in assists each
year of her illustrious career.
Meyer reaches 100-win milestone
Head Football Coach Courtney
Meyer roams the sideline at Bulldog
Stadium. Meyer eclipsed the 100win mark in September 2005.
16
with the concordia football team´s win over
Hastings College on Sept. 17, Head Coach Courtney
Meyer picked up his 100th collegiate football victory.
“It’s more a product of time than anything,” said
a humble coach Meyer. “I actually have an average
record. More important than wins and losses is being
able to be a part of the player’s life in a Christian
environment. ”
Overall Meyer is 103-116-1. During his 16 years
as head coach at Concordia University, Nebraska he
has compiled a record of 68-97-1.
Coach Meyer was named Great Plains Athletic
Conference (GPAC) Coach of the Year in 2001 after
guiding the Bulldogs to a 10-2 finish and a share of
the GPAC championship. Concordia advanced to
the quarterfinals of the NAIA championship playoffs
during that season.
He also was the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Confer-
ence (NIAC) Co-Coach of the Year in 1999 after
Concordia turned in its first winning record since
1987. The 1965 Concordia graduate served as
president of the NAIA Football Coaches Association
in 2000 as well as serving on the ethics committee of
the American Football Coaches Association.
Before becoming head coach Meyer served as
defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs from 1977
until 1984. He then took the head coaching position
at Concordia University, Mequon, Wis., for six years.
While at Mequon he had a record of 35-19. He
then returned to Seward to take over the helm of the
Bulldog football program.
Meyer holds a master’s degree in physical education from Southeast Missouri State University. He
and his wife Connie have three children.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Blessings &
Heartfelt Dedication
O
ver the past 112 years Concordia has been blessed by the
strong relationship it shares with its alumni and friends. Those
many years of heartfelt dedication have filled our classrooms
with students, deepened and broadened our educational offerings, and enabled us to improve the campus in ways that will
serve us in this century and beyond. They have made us the
university we are today and helped chart the path to the university we will become.
Your trust and commitment is inspiring and, in no small
part, it is humbling as well. We give thanks for all of those who
enable us to equip students to serve church and world. For me
it has also been a great personal joy over the past months to
meet with many of you on campus and across the country.
One measure of an educational institution is the number of
students it serves. I am pleased to report that Concordia continues to grow and flourish. Our application rate this coming year
is up significantly and we continue on a trend towards greater
enrollment. Concordia is ranked again in the upper third of
colleges in the “top schools” Midwest-master’s category in U.S.
News & World Report’s rankings. And as noted regularly in the
Broadcaster, wonderful accomplishments have been achieved by
our music, arts, drama, athletic and other programs.
Another measure of an educational institution is its financial
status. I am pleased to share that Concordia is financially sound.
This was confirmed this past summer in our annual audit by
Virchow, Krause & Company. In a time when many institutions of higher education have struggled, Concordia remains on
firm ground.
Challenges remain, of course. We are working hard to keep
tuition costs affordable. Our endowment is growing, but it is
still at a level that is well below that of other schools our size.
Our campus is thoughtfully maintained–Concordia faculty and
staff are careful stewards–but there are parts of it that are in
significant need of improvement.
With your continued support we will meet these challenges
and advance the mission so dearly entrusted to us, to prepare
servant leaders for church and world.
Blessings,
Brian L. Friedrich

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
A Game
Plan for
Success
Concordia urged to act strategically
jon von rentzell ´87 was
one of the first graduates of
Concordia’s fledgling business
program in the late ’80s, and
he has since become one of its
most successful alums. Von
Rentzell is a vice president for
performance improvement at
Carlson Marketing, a privately
held, world-wide marketing
services firm. He is a 10-time
recipient of Carlson Sales
Achievement Award and has 18
years of experience in the areas
of marketing, sales, employee
performance and improving
brand loyalty. Based in Minneapolis, his global responsibilities
now have him jetting across the
continent and overseas several
times a year.
While at Concordia, Von

On A Mission $60M Campaign
The financial goal of On A Mission is to secure
$60 million in gifts and pledges for:
• Endowment–$30 million
• Weller Fund–$10 million for scholarship and operations

Staying competitive
“I think that the HHPAC
will accelerate our ability to
serve in so many ways. This
facility will make us competitive—and strategically this is
something that I believe the
university needs to focus on.
This will finally put us on
par with other schools in our
conference with well-rounded
educational and human performance facilities.”
Whole person
“I’m glad that the university
is truly considering the education of the whole person—
mind, spirit and body. I’m very
proud of the commitment that
Concordia is making towards
the facilities that support this
balanced approach.”

Stepping back, making a plan
marge (luhman) kertz ´70 remembers sitting at
the dinner table with her parents during her senior
year in high school and being asked by her parents if
she had considered Concordia in Seward. “That was
the planting of the seed,” said Marge. And that seed
took root. Within the next four
years of her life she would graduate with a degree in education
and music and also marry David
Kertz, an accountant, and her
husband of 35 years. Marjorie has
