August 2009
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan
High School,
I am proud to report that despite a sharp decline in the economy,
the Griffin Spirit is strong and thriving! This is evidenced in this year’s
Annual Report.
Total giving to the high school this year was $210,000.
This amount was derived from many sources, mainly contributions to
the Annual Appeal. Gifts to the Annual Appeal help to provide a better
learning environment for the students who attend MDHS, their teachers and coaches. Appeal
proceeds support the school and its programs, and allow for the completion of projects that go
beyond the annual budgeting of funds for capital expenses.
Once again, a number of our benefactors helped with tuition assistance through the Keep
PACE (Provide a Catholic Education) and 4A (Add An Additional Amount) programs. Earnings
from Keep PACE and 4A provide Catholic education aid for students in need at Monsignor Donovan
High School. Another source of tuition assistance for underclassmen, as well as graduating seniors,
are the many memorial scholarships, named in honor of friends, former faculty members, and
graduates of St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School.
Monsignor Donovan High School was also blessed to receive a number of grants in the
2008-2009 school year. Net profits from the school’s four main raffles totaled $49,382. In the
school’s first-ever Earn ‘n Burn fundraiser, students raised a total of $19,647.
In closing, I wish to extend my gratitude to the more than 300 donors who supported
Monsignor Donovan High School last year. Without those gifts, we simply could not sustain our
vital mission now and in the future.
In appreciation of your generous support of our school and our students, I offer you the
following quote by Mother Teresa:
We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.
But if that drop was not in the ocean, I think the ocean would be less because
of that missing drop. I do not agree with the big way of doing things.
God bless!
Edward G. Gere, Ed.D.

St. Joseph’s Endowment Fund
for Catholic Education
Founded in 1996, St. Joseph’s Endowment Fund for
Catholic Education was established to provide for the
long-term financial security for the Catholic education
at St. Joseph’s Grade School and Monsignor Donovan
High School. Since 1996, the St. Joseph’s Endowment
Fund has grown considerably from $37,000 to almost
$700,000. The primary manner in which endowment
funds are raised is the annual fall reception.
12th Annual Fall Reception
St. Joseph’s Endowment Fund
for Catholic Education
Honoree: Mrs. Rita Kearney
The 12th Annual Fall Reception to benefit the
St. Joseph’s Endowment Fund for Catholic Education
will take place on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the
Holiday Inn in Toms River, NJ. This year’s honoree
will be Mrs. Rita Kearney.
Mrs. Kearney is the proud mother of four St.
Joseph Grade School and High School graduates. Mrs.
Kearney was a member of the PTA and served as its
President. She also taught Math, Science and Family
Life at St. Joseph’s Grade School for eighteen years.
MDHS Honorary Alumnus Mrs. Rita Kearney
with Fr. John Bambrick
Mrs. Kearney is an esteemed member of the
St. Joseph’s Parish community, where she works on the
Parish staff. For almost four decades, she has served
as a guiding force of the St. Joseph’s Century Club, which provides scholarships to deserving students from
St. Joseph’s Grade School who attend Monsignor Donovan High School. She has held numerous leadership
positions in the local community, including her service as one of the founding board members of the Interfaith
Hospitality Network.
In 2007, Mrs. Kearney was awarded the Ocean County Light of Hope Award by Catholic Charities,
Diocese of Trenton.
Mrs. Kearney is a member of the St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School Hall of Fame and was
named an Honorary Alumnus of Monsignor Donovan High School in 2009. She is also the school’s most ardent
fan of boy’s varsity basketball!
It is an honor to recognize Mrs. Kearney for her loyalty and commitment to the children of St. Joseph’s
Grade School and Monsignor Donovan High School
Tickets to the fall reception and ads for the journal can be obtained by contacting Debra Cini in the St.
Joseph’s Parish office at 732-244-3008.

Leadership Advisory Council
2008-2009
Members of the LAC meet approximately four times during the school year to advise
the Administration on matters relevant to ensuring the future and vitality of MDHS. The
members act as ambassadors by assisting in the expansion of the school’s circle of friends.
Members are invited to join this select group because of their commitment to the school’s
mission and programs, and because of their own individual and unique talents and gifts.
