They think it is a sad, joyless religion. However, the Lord assures us that he came to bring us joy; not the joy of empty laughter, nor the joy of the proud who makes fun of the simple or of the wealthy who mock the poor. Neither is it the joy of a lover who lies and cheats, or of the tyrant that inflicts suffering on others. That is not the joy of the Gospel. There is a more human, more beautiful kind of joy. The one of the mother caring for her infant. The joy we feel when we have helped another person or saved a life, when we have eased a sorrow or been useful to others. That is the joy of the Christian who knows that this life, which is rather absurd, is not the final one; that our beloved dead are not completely dead. That is the joy our Savior brought. In order to share in that joy, we must pay a price. The price to be paid for that joy is fulfilling the Lord’s commandment. He said: “Love one another as I have loved you.” And He added: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” The Eucharist we celebrate today commemorates the Lord’s great gesture of love. With the sacrifice of His death, He paid the down payment in order to bring us life. It is up to us to continue paying the installments through our love for others. That is what communion means, to share the love of Christ. Fr. Nereus and Achilleus were Roman soldiers in the household of Flavia Domitilla. They were instructed and converted by St. Peter. These two soldiers in turn inspired St. Domitilla to consecrate her virginity to God. Aurelianus, Domitilla’s fiancee, reported all three to the Roman authorities as being Christians and they were martyred. May 7, St. Matthias, according to the Acts of the Apostles, was the apostle chosen by the believers to replace Judas Iscariot following Judas' betrayal of Jesus and suicide. His calling as an apostle is unique in that his appointment was not made personally by Jesus, who had already ascended into heaven, and, it was made before the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the early Church. 6th Sunday of Easter Page 7 The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA Misericordiae Vultus, Bull Proclaiming the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy The Jubilee year will close with the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King on 20 November 2016. On that day, as we seal the Holy Door, we shall be filled, above all, with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving to the Most Holy Trinity for having granted us an extraordinary time of grace. We will entrust the life of the Church, all humanity, and the entire cosmos to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to pour out his mercy upon us like the morning dew, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future. How much I desire that the year to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God! May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst! Library & Music Room Social Studies Room Library & School Chapel 7th Grade Room Rectory Chapel Church & School Church Music Room Rectory Chapel School Chapel Church New World Center Library 6th Sunday of Easter Page 9 The eighth grade students recently paid tribute to their parents at the annual Parent Appreciation Dinner. This was a unique opportunity for students to thank their parents for helping them throughout their years at St. Hugh and along their journey in life and faith. The students decorated the Parish Hall and waited on the tables. After the meal, they shared their thoughts and showed a beautiful slide show they had created that stressed their relationship with their parents. The parents and students had a great time and even got to enjoy some time on the dance floor together. The Spring Concert held on April 28th was a great hit! Working their way through the decades, students in third through eighth grade sang and danced a variety of selections from the 1950’s right up through to the hits of today. Under the direction of Ms. Vanessa Gentzschein the students showcased not only the different styles of music, but also the fashion and dance styles of the times. It was definitely a show that all generations enjoyed. Page 10 St. Hugh The St. Hugh School community gathered in church on May 1st for the May Crowning, an annual devotion to the Virgin Mary. The second grade students walked in procession carrying flowers and placed them at the foot of the statue of Mary. Songs and prayers were recited in Her honor and a decade of the rosary was prayed. Four of our Middle School dancers also performed a beautiful liturgical dance, During the ceremony, three eighth grade girls who were chosen by their peers, crowned the statue of Mary with a wreath of roses. During the season of Lent, our students participated in the Catholic Relief Service Rice Bowl campaign. We are happy to announce that our school raised $1,879.42. Thank you to all who helped support the work of the Catholic Church throughout the world and in our own community. Approximately 25% of donations to CRS Rice Bowl stays in our diocese to combat hunger and poverty in our own community and 75% supports CRS’ work to help the poor overseas that are devastated by natural human-wrought disasters. and
