n 2007 Emily Popham was living in the Big Apple performing with
the New York Chamber Players and working with directors to provide
music for movies and commercials. She also was commuting to Charlotte, N.C., to sit as principal violinist for the Degas Quartet when she
met Kevin Gillins, another musician, through the church she was attending
in Charlotte.
Besides their love of music, they are avid readers and one of their favorite
books is “The Great Gatsby,” so they chose the Grand Ballroom at The Seelbach Hilton for their wedding.
Emily was glowing in an ivory-beaded lace Maggie Sottero gown from
Rebecca’s, and she wore her grandmother’s pearl necklace. She carried a gathered bouquet of gardenias, Sahara roses and white cymbidium orchids with
wine centers. Emily’s brothers, John and Mark, were her “men of honor.”
After the beautiful ceremony in the Grand Ballroom, guests mingled in
the adjacent foyer for refreshments while the ballroom was turned for dinner. The string quartet played, as guests selected their escort cards displayed
on glass ornaments covered with snowflakes. When they returned to the ballroom, it was set with ivory linens and chair covers and gold chargers under
ivory china. Hundreds of black magic and freedom roses adorned the tables.
Guests enjoyed a sumptuous buffet as the Grassified Bluegrass Band
played in the background. But the best was yet to come.
Kevin, a member of the band, sang and played some of his original compositions for Emily. Not to be outdone, Emily also played her violin for the
mesmerized crowd, especially dedicating a classical piece to her grandfather,
Dr. Bernard Popham, sitting at a nearby table. What a fabulous treat for all
their guests.
A suite was reserved for the younger attendees with their own menu, a
magician, games and videos. As all the guests departed, an all white candy
station was on display in the ballroom foyer for yet another sweet treat.
