Banking Networks - EMC Satcom Technologies
The banking and financial sector requires a secure and reliable communication infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency. With widely distributed branches, local offices, and ATMs, often located in remote areas lacking solid terrestrial infrastructure, banking and financial organizations are turning to their own satellite-based private networks as a preferred solution for connecting their dispersed locations under one core platform. EMC Satcom technologies’ SatLink networks are an ideal solution for modern, cost-effective banking infrastructure requirements, meeting present-day needs for expanding geographically, increasing reliability and security of financial transactions, and ensuring business continuity and disaster recovery in unforeseen network disruption scenarios. Our VSATs can be installed in any location worldwide to allow open, secure communications with local branches, ATMs, and central offices. Offering strong support, customer service, and IT personnel training, EMC Satcom has been selected to design and implement private banking infrastructures for regional economic and financial institutions in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, for clients such as Lippo Bank, Alfalha bank, Standard Trust Bank, Inland Bank, CEMAC’s Central Bank, and Central Bank of Libya. This is critical in a back office environment for processing credit cards, trading in financial markets, providing ATM services, and handling any other sensitive data or voice traffic. The same applies on front office needs, such as for tellers/cashiers and ATM applications. SatLink networks are designed with built-in support for TRANSEC using AES-256 encryption on all traffic over the satellite links, thereby providing a safe and fast environment for customers and internal banking transactions. Even if specialized security mechanisms are in place, EMC Satcom Technologies can provide an extra layer of security to ensure that no data is compromised or keep secure transactions and sensitive data transfers separate from less-sensitive, general communications. SatLink Security Features www.emcsatcom.com 2 The ability to expand a customer base and generate new revenue streams smoothly and rapidly through ATM and local branch additions is imperative to enhancing market competitiveness in the banking sector. EMC Satcom’s VSAT networks can be rapidilly scaled to accommodate new secure links between banks and ATMs, regardless of location. EMC Satcom Technologies can also provide infrastructure for interbank networking, allowing selected ATMs to provide services on behalf of other banks, while generating additional income for the host bank through standard service charges. SatLink networks are well-suited for the standard protocols required by international payment systems, can be integrated with specialized components, and can be customized to enable new features as per customer requirements. Our trusted solutions have enabled usage of all types of payment systems, including: Systems for check and wire clearance Systems requiring high data rates EFT networks Debit & credit transactions Interbank networks Intra-office communications can be a major expense in banking, where voice communication is critical to continuity and enables faster service for customers. To reduce this expense, EMC Satcom offers private telephony networks that circumvent existing telephony networks and high international call rates. To ensure reliability and sound quality, the SatLink system uses advanced features that prevent VoIP calls from becoming compromised by other banking communications. www.emcsatcom.com 3 Satellite networks are an essential element in disaster recovery infrastructure for all major financial institutions. Networks need to be designed with support for both link diversity and geographical diversity in the siting of major data processing and communications facilities to circumvent communication interruptions in the event of a potential network disruption. SatLink networks provide an ideal backup solution for business continuity, with options for EMC Satcom Technologies Backup Solution for Banking redundancy in all components and support for terrestrial and satellite links. Advanced communications coding ensures very low error rates and higher layer protocols ensure no data lost during transfers, ensuring business continuity through a component failure or network disruption. This allows a SatLink network to provide direct any-to-any communications between bank offices or branches, reducing latency and maximizing bandwidth utilization. Mesh is well suited for voice traffic in international operations, as well as in delay-sensitive data traffic. BEAC (Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale or The Bank of Central African States) is a large central bank serving CEMAC (Central African Economic and Monetary Community) with common currency for 6 countries – Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo – that needed secure and reliable communications for their banking infrastructure, as well as a private telephony network for inter-office communications. EMC Satcom’s solution provided connectivity to 20 offices in capitals and less densely populated cities, allowing them to directly communicate with each other and with BEAC’s Paris operations. Structured in a mesh topology, this banking infrastructure allows for direct branch-to-branch, branch-toHQ, and HQ-to-HQ communication. To further safeguard confidential data transfers without disruption, EMC VSAT Network Example: BEAC Satcom implemented advanced security features, a robust interbank network, and secured back-office applications. Further back-office support for credit card processing, financial market trading, check and wire www.emcsatcom.com 5 transfer clearances, and e-commerce were enabled by connecting every site to CEMAC’s centralized payment system. For the front-office need of local branches and ATM applications, EMC Satcom Technologies further connected each site to a number of commercial banks, enabling timely voice and data transfers for bank managers, tellers, and cashiers. These commercial banks will in turn be connected to an ATM network in future expansion plans. With 20 offices in different countries long distances from each other, international voice calls between offices had also become a major expense using traditional telephony. EMC Satcom overcame this obstacle by offering a dedicated telephony channel for the day-to-day communication requirements of banking branches and offices. Lastly, to ensure business continuity critical to such a largely interconnected infrastructure, EMC Satcom also provided geographical redundancy of BEAC’s primary hub in Yaounde by placing a disaster recovery hub in Libreville. As both the primary and disaster recovery hubs are centralized, each terminal site installation was also connected to each of the two hub sites, offering a dependable system resistant to communication impediments. With EMC Satcom's solution, BEAC not only reduced its communications costs considerably, but also improved its infrastructure and created a more efficient and reliable service for its customers.
