ROBIN TUNNEY ADAM SCOTT JEREMY STRONG SEE GIRL RUN A film by Nate Meyer 2012 / USA / English / Comedy / 89 min / Arri Alexa / 2.35 / Dolby 5.1 Sales Contact: 173 Richardson Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11222, USA Office: +1.718.312.8210 Fax: +1.718.362.4865 Email: [email protected] Web: www.visitfilms.com Press Contact: Jim Dobson / Indie PR (323) 896-6006 [email protected] LOGLINE A 30-something year-old woman travels to Maine to reconnect with her high school sweetheart and possibly reignite her life. SHORT SYNOPSIS When Emmie starts to think that her current relationship isn’t enough, she can’t stop wondering about her high school sweetheart, Jason, who continues to live in their quaint, coastal Maine hometown, perpetually in pursuit of becoming a renowned artist. On a whim, Emmie treks up to Maine to find Jason and discover if he could be what she needs to reignite her life. LONG SYNOPSIS Now in her mid-30’s, Emmie has lived in New York City for over a decade when she starts to get that common tickle in her gut and question in her head: “Is this all there is for me?” She and her husband Graham have no kids and their marriage is fine, but her Brooklyn dog daycare business and life with a loving spouse aren’t enough to keep her from wondering “what if…?” about her high school sweetheart, Jason, who continues to live in their quaint, coastal Maine hometown, perpetually in pursuit of becoming a renowned artist. Jason was, in high school, the perfect antidote to Emmie’s teenage anxiety. They had what felt like an idyllic, youthful romance. And, technically, it never ended. There was no big fight or cheating or dramatic breakup of any kind. Instead, as she remembers it, they simply came to a point where they realized they needed to go separate ways. But this has left her all these years without closure and has fostered overly romanticized memories of first love - uncomplicated and pure - and the notion that in some way they are actually still together and he’s waiting for her. On a whim, she treks up to Maine to find Jason and discover who he is now and if who they are now could reignite her life. While there, she also confronts long gestating issues with her parents just as her brother Brandon struggles with a more severe crisis of his own. As Brandon responds when Emmie confesses she’s back in Maine to deal with some unfinished business, “That’s what ‘home town’ means... this place is nothing but unfinished business.” PRESS QUOTES "What's lovely about See Girl Run is that it's a twist on the genre of the lost-love romance" NPR "A sensitive, no-cop-outs film about relationships and moments of truth" The Hollywood Reporter "One movie worth remembering from this year's mix a generous-spirited romantic dramedy" Dallas Morning News "Tunney and Scott are excellent" IndieWire FESTIVALS SXSW Film Festival Atlanta Film Festival Florida Film Festival Sarasota Film Festival River Run Film Festival Independent Film Festival Boston DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT What happens when life’s “what ifs” begin to overwhelm an appreciation for the wonders of what life actually is? See Girl Run explores the meaning and value of commitment from various angles: not simply commitment in relationships but also to oneself in following one’s dreams, to the interpersonal sacrifices such pursuits can lead to, to the families we create. These thoughts and feelings don’t stem from any piousness or religious inclination. Simply, I am disheartened by an increasing disregard for the importance and payoff of following through when times grow difficult or even just less than perpetually exciting. The constant state that so many people live in - that their lives are entitled to always be romantically thrilling and “what if…” and “follow your dreams no matter what” - can be vital and even noble but there is a point at which it can lead to narcissism and a breakdown in basic human growth. At the same time, I wanted to wrestle with the fine line between admirably, single-mindedly following one’s dreams on the one hand and the willingness to change, evolve and grow in unexpected ways on the other. There have been movies before that are about a restless person searching for what he or she feels is lacking in life. My goal is to not only have the story be about that in its action, but to thematically explore what that common conundrum is actually about - where does it come from and why? What can a person do with it? What are the potential benefits and pitfalls associated with it? All in an authentic depiction of the messiness, drama, humor, and complexity associated with these powerful questions. Ultimately, countless stories are about infidelity. Among other things, See Girl Run is a story about fidelity. Nate Meyer / 2012 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION During a successful festival run throughout 2007 with his debut feature film Pretty in the Face (premiering in Narrative Feature Competition at South by Southwest), director/writer Nate Meyer wrote several screenplays in order to be prepared to follow up with a second film. He completed the script for See Girl Run in 2008 and sent it to friend and filmmaking colleague David Gordon Green (director of Pineapple Express, George Washington, and All the Real Girls) for feedback. Green immediately committed to help Meyer bring the movie to fruition, eventually becoming an Executive Producer alongside Lisa Muskat (Compliance, The Sitter, Man Push Cart). Of the various scripts Meyer had completed, See Girl Run’s themes, ideas and characters were closest to his heart and inspired a determination to put together the best creative team possible and make the movie happen. Over the course of the next couple of years, while Meyer continued to develop additional projects, spec and for-hire, he and Green focused on finding the right cast for the three lead roles. With a confident story in hand, it was clear that the most crucial component to making the film work would be getting the great performances that are critical for the story’s characters. Meyer puts a premium on working with actors, himself having followed his undergraduate filmmaking studies with a Master of Arts in acting. With both Pretty in the Face and now See Girl Run, he strives for the kind of character-driven, authentic, dramatic stories that inspire his artistic life. Meyer wanted to cast the lead role of Emmie with someone skilled and empathic enough to bring this complicated character to life. Further, he sought a somewhat unexpected choice for whom the role would provide a showcase of different qualities than audiences might normally expect. Green had known Robin Tunney and had a feeling she would jump at the chance to sink her teeth into a role with shades to offer in contrast to the primarily cop roles she had been playing in recent years on television hits The Mentalist and Prison Break. Immediately upon reading See Girl Run and getting acquainted with Meyer’s vision for the project, Tunney committed fully to the role and to figuring out how to fit it into her extensive, hectic television shooting schedule. The role of Jason required an actor nimble enough to exude boyish charm while maintaining the grounded quality of someone passionately committed to his life pursuits. Adam Scott’s deft, comic chops displayed in Step Brothers, Party Down and Parks and Recreation, combined with his powerful dramatic turn in the Sundance hit The Vicious Kind, proved his mix of acting gifts made him the perfect choice for Jason. Scott got the script and was intrigued by a role he felt he hadn’t played before. Perhaps the trickiest role in the movie, Brandon threatened to be the greatest casting challenge. At the urging of Executive Producers David Gordon Green and Lisa Muskat, Meyer attended an off-Broadway Adam Rapp play from this Hallway Trilogy to acquaint himself with an actor they admired: Jeremy Strong. Strong’s layered, vulnerable performance made him excellent for Brandon and he himself was both excited and intimidated by the role. (Incidentally, a week after being cast in See Girl Run, Steven Spielberg cast Strong in his film Lincoln to shoot later in the year.) Casting director Jessica Kelly then helped round out a cast of stellar veteran actors including Josh Hamilton, William Sadler and Marylouise Burke. Meyer had been developing a different project under the guidance of experienced producer Derrick Tseng (Life During Wartime, Choke, The Ten, Snow Angels), who came onboard along with fellow producer Jesse Sweet. Jeremy Saulnier, whose recent cinematography in the films Putty Hill and Septien had received wide-ranging kudos, joined as the Director of Photography and worked with Meyer for months devising the seamless, richly detailed visual scheme through location scouting, storyboarding, studying visual references and choosing to shoot with the then new Arri Alexa. Editor Jane Rizzo (also editor of the recent Sundance sensation Compliance) was hired before production began in order to have a leg up once post production commenced. With five days of shooting in Brooklyn followed by fourteen days of shooting in Portland, South Portland and Damariscotta, Maine, the producers hired some of the production team from the valuable, experienced crew in the Maine area and traveled them down for a short period in Brooklyn and, likewise, took the others that were NYC-based northward to enjoy hard work along with the bountiful delights distinctive to southern Maine. The month of May 2011 proved to be just the right period to get the film in the can. Leaving the cautious, production-savvy NYC area for the welcoming, enthusiastic Portland, Maine environment in many ways mirrored Emmie’s journey in the film. Ever since shooting Pretty in the Face, Meyer had been looking forward to getting back to that one-of-a-kind part of the country so rarely depicted in film. The community of crew, local acting talent, businesses and locations were overwhelmingly accommodating and overjoyed to be a part of the endeavor. Meyer took great pleasure in reconnecting with some of the local filmmakers he had met years earlier on his first film and was able to cast some of the local talent from that experience for several roles in See Girl Run. The crew from NYC spent every nonproduction moment making the most of what Portland has to offer, regularly indulging in both lobster-eating and local microbrew drinking contests. After production, Meyer and Rizzo immediately began the edit, then worked through the sound design and mix with Michael Suarez and the elegant original score with Joseph Stephens. The entire See Girl Run team is thrilled to make its World Premiere at SXSW 2012 and Nate Meyer, in particular, is proud to return home to the festival where his first film was initially brought into the world. ABOUT THE CAST ROBIN TUNNEY (“Emmie”) Robin Tunney established herself as an award winning actress in a series of independent films and has gone on to become a popular fixture in movies and television while never straying too far from her indie roots. In 2009, the show won a People Choice Award for 'Favorite New Drama' as well as a Television Critics Association nomination for 'Outstanding New Program of the Year.' Tunney’s first film was the teen cult classic EMPIRE RECORDS which featured an up and coming cast including Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler. In an attempt to escape the teen genre, Tunney followed the film up with Bob Gosse's critically acclaimed independent feature NIAGARA, NIAGARA.
