Green
Thumb
of
memories that last a lifetime
By Pam Hait
Ask Scott McMahon about Euphorbias and, like his favorite succulent, he happily opens up.
“I used to race bikes and was introduced to Euphorbias through a cycling buddy in Tucson.
I now have 120 species and almost 500 plants in my collection, and I’m always looking for
more. I’m convinced there is a collector gene in some people,” he says with a smile.
A native of Phoenix whose father owned a commercial landscaping business, McMahon
taught elementary school, worked in electronics and ran a landscaping firm before joining the staff of the Desert Botanical Garden as Curator of Cactus six years ago.
“The more you learn about the desert, the more you become fascinated by it,” he emphasizes. A natural instructor, he also teaches classes at the Garden on pruning, landscaping
and other subjects. Mention cacti and he gladly shares unique and interesting information.
“Cacti are the only plants to produce multiple spines in clusters, and they are only found
in the New World,” he offers. “Cacti are one family. Succulents are many families,” he adds.
Admiring a long-stemmed plant with a brilliant apricot bloom, he says, “This is an Easter
lily cactus, which is a hybrid. It’s grown for its color and must be planted under a tree.”
A few moments later, he points out a quirky-looking tree and confides, “The elephant tree
is one of my favorites, with its gnarled, ragged and peeling bark. It is a semi-succulent that
leafs out in winter and is native to the southern Baja, where the boojum tree is found.”
Scott McMahon, Curator of Cactus, Desert
Botanical Garden
McMahon emphasizes that only a handful of cacti in the Garden are native to the Sonoran Desert. “It is important to know where cacti
come from, because then you know where and how they like to grow. Cacti do need care; some need protection from the sun. That’s
why boulders and rocks are more than decoration in a desert garden. They provide refuge,” he says.
When not gardening at work, McMahon gardens at home. “I’ve removed all my exotic plants and have only cacti and succulents now.
I like the desert,” he says.
So do guests of the Desert Botanical Garden. “Some of our visitors are blown away,” he states. “They love what they see here.”

the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. Special tours and packages are available.
Are you an experienced horseman or horsewoman looking for a challenging all-day canter
through the rugged Sonoran Desert? Perhaps you’re an amateur archaeologist hoping to
explore Arizona’s thousand-year-old Native American ruins? Or maybe you’re an Old West buff
looking to experience the life of a wild and woolly prospector, even if it’s just for the afternoon.
If so, the good folks at Windwalker Expeditions are ready and waiting for you.

Serving the Valley of the Sun for 18 years, Westwind
provides unique air and air/ground tours to the Grand
Canyon and other Southwest destinations.
Offering exclusively custom-crafted tours, Windwalker is perfect for visitors looking to savor
Arizona’s rugged outdoor beauty. “We work with a lot of riders looking for a little more challenge than the average horse ride,” says Windwalker Expeditions Manager Milton Joseph.
“We’re talking beautiful full-day trail rides featuring all the trotting you can take.”
AMUSEMENT PARKS
However, Windwalker is not just for horse-heads looking to test their mettle on a serious ride.
Take Windwalker’s famed Archaeology Ecotours, where professional archaeologists accompany
guests on private Jeep and foot tours through the wind-swept remains of the desert’s earliest
dwellers. Inspired by Dr. James Schoenwetter, professor of archaeology at Arizona State
University, guests learn firsthand about Arizona’s unique ecology and cultural history while
exploring the sun-baked ruins of these ancient American civilizations.
Or step into Arizona’s more recent past with a prospecting trip to a historic gold mine tucked
into the base of the Bradshaw Mountains, a remote range just north of Scottsdale filled with
fanciful names such as Horsethief Basin. Here, you’ll visit the homesteads and gravesites of
the settlers who first found gold in the area in the 1800s, as well as pan for gold alongside a
real-deal prospector – finders keepers!
But that’s not all, says Joseph. “Because all of our tours are private and individualized, we are
able to offer a lot more flexibility than traditional tour companies.” Which is good news for all
you snapshot artists looking to capture that never-before-seen panorama or a postcard-perfect
Arizona sunset. “All three of our photography guides are professional photographers, including
one who works regularly for Arizona Highways magazine,” Joseph says. Naturally, these working
photographers know just the sort of secret landscapes and stunning scenery that will make
your friends back home green with envy.

A PRESSING MATTER BY DAWSON FEARNOW
Arizona’s warm, sunny days and cool desert nights have always created an ideal climate for
growing olives. However, at the Queen Creek Olive Mill, one local farmer has taken olive production to the next logical step by creating Arizona’s first commercial olive press and using
it to bottle extra-virgin olive oil from his nine varieties of olive trees. Located at the base of
the San Tan Mountains in the far East Valley, the mill offers tours and Tuscan-style tastings,
even light lunches at the on-site eatery, del Piero. Or you can simply head over to one of the
