California continues to experience a drought due to extremely low rainfall and below-average snowpack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, as well as restrictions in the amount of water that can be pumped from the Sacramento/ San Joaquin Rivers Delta. Malibu’s water is supplied by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Waterworks District 29. The County purchases imported water from its regional wholesale water agency, West Basin Municipal Water District. Our area completely depends on imported water from the Delta, and decreased supply makes it extremely important for everyone to conserve water. The City recognizes the importance of water conservation and is actively working with the local water agencies to provide outreach and incentives. Using water more efficiently and changing some wasteful habits now will be extremely helpful if this drought continues, as Southern California may be faced with water shortages in the future. Even small changes in your daily habits can result in a large amount of water savings. Follow these water saving tips: 1) Turn it off – Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes. 2) Cut it back – Water your lawn no more than twice a week, for two 3-minute-cycles at 30 minutes apart; better yet, replace your turf with drought friendly plants. 5) Take pride in grime – Show your commitment to conserving by letting your car get a little dirty; if you must wash it, take it to a carwash that recycles. 6) Fill it up – Wash your laundry in full loads only. 7) Chill out – Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator, not under warm running water. 8) Keep it down – Keep the swimming pool levels low to avoid water splashing out of the pool, and use a pool cover to slow evaporation; your pool will be cleaner too! 9) Ditch drips – Fix all leaking toilets, faucets, hose bibs, and irrigation right away. 10)Spread the word – Talk to your neighbors and friends about conserving water and let them know if you see a wasteful habit they can change. Governor Brown has called on all Californians to reduce their water use by 20 percent and prevent water waste – visit SaveOurH2O.org to find out how everyone can do their part, and visit www.malibucity.org/ConserveH2O to learn more about rebates and incentives for locals. Call the City’s 24-hour Pollution Prevention Hotline at 310.359.8003 to report water runoff. 2 • City of Malibu Quarterly Newsletter 310.456.2489 Malibu City Hall 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, Malibu,CA 90265 310.456.2489 City Hall Hours Monday – Thursday 7:30am-5:30pm Friday 7:30am-4:30pm City Hall Holidays – Closed – September 1 November 11 November 27 November 28 Online Passport Appointments at Malibu City Hall The City of Malibu is an acceptance office for individuals to obtain their passports.
