WELCOME TO DIVINE MERCY CATHOLIC CHURCH
3rd Sunday of
ADVENT
Dec. 11, 2011
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPCOMING EVENTS
Mass in honor of the
Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe
Sunday, December 11th at 5:00 am
MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Greetings to all Divine Mercy Parishioners:
In 1910 Our Lady of Guadalupe was
declared Patroness of Latin America,
and in 1945 Pope Pius XII declared Her
to be the Empress of all the Americas.
She appeared to
an
Indian
convert named
Juan Diego on
December 9,
1531. She left a
marvelous portrait of herself on the
mantle of Juan Diego. This miraculous
image has proved to be ageless, and is
kept in the shrine built in her honor, the
Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

PENANCE SERVICE

In preparation for the Birth of Our Lord
Jesus Christ, we will have a PENANCE
SERVICE on Tuesday, December 13th
at 6:30 pm.
There will be NO 6:30 pm
Mass on this day.
I am very proud to announce that Our Lady of
Guadalupe has arrived in our Parish!
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to
everyone who participated in this Divine Mercy
Project. Because of our united effort, we were able
to collect the necessary funds and successfully bring
the statue here in Divine Mercy.
I would like to specially mention a hardworking lady
who made the first donation of $500; an old
gentleman, unable to come to church, sent his
granddaughter with a plastic bag full of loose
change totalling $9.10; a young lady who goes to a
Catholic school emptied her piggy bank and donated
her savings of $7.37; a young couple who donated
$1,000; and to the numerous people who donated
in any amount.
Our faith in the Lord and unity of our parishioners
made it possible to bring the statue of Our Lady of
Guadalupe to Divine Mercy.

HOLY COMMUNION
AND THE EUCHARIST
Every morning during meditation, I
prepare myself for the whole day’s
struggle. Holy Communion assures me
that I will win the victory; and so it is. I
fear the day when I do not receive Holy
Communion. This bread of the Strong
gives me all the strength I need to carry
on my mission and the courage to do whatever the Lord asks of
me. The courage and strength that are in me are not of me, but
of Him who lives in me - it is the Eucharist. O my Jesus, the
misunderstandings are so great; sometimes, were it not for the
Eucharist , I would not have the courage to go any further along
the way You have marked out for me. (91)
Once I desired very much to receive Holy
Communion, but I had a certain doubt, and I
did not go. I suffered greatly because of this.
It seemed to me that my heart would burst
from the pain. When I set about my work,
my heart full of bitterness, Jesus suddenly
stood by me and said, My daughter, do not omit Holy Communion
unless you know well that your fall was serious; apart from this,
no doubt must stop you from uniting yourself with Me in the
mystery of My love. Your minor faults will disappear in My love
like a piece of straw thrown into a great furnace. Know that you
grieve Me much when you fail to receive Me in Holy
Communion.(156)
My daughter, write that it pains Me very much when religious
souls receive the Sacrament of Love merely out of habit, as if
they did not distinguish this food. I find neither faith, nor love in
their hearts. I go to such souls with great reluctance. It would
be better if they did not receive Me.(1288)
I desire to unite Myself to human souls, know,
My daughter, that when I come to a human
heart in Holy Communion, My hands are full
of all kinds of graces which I want to give to
the soul. But souls do not even pay any
attention to Me; they leave Me to Myself and
busy themselves with other things. They treat Me as a dead
object. (1385)
All the good that is in me is due to Holy Communion. I owe
everything to it. I feel that this holy fire has transformed me
completely. Oh, how happy I am to be a dwelling place for You,
O Lord! My heart is a temple in which You dwell continually.

raditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a circle of
evergreen branches into which four candles are inserted,
representing the four weeks of Advent. Ideally, three candles
are purple and one is rose, but white candles can also be used.
The purple candles in
particular symbolize the
prayer, penance, and
preparatory sacrifices

“Presence”
and goods works
undertaken at this time.
The rose candle is lit
on
the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also
wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday
of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of
Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are
close to Christmas.
Advent, this powerful liturgical season that
we are beginning, invites us to pause in
silence to understand a presence. It is an
invitation to understand that the individual
events of the day are hints that God is giving
us, signs of the attention he has for each
one of us.
The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the
expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into
the world and the anticipation of his second coming to judge
the living and the dead. Source: www.usccb.org

In the First Reading, Isaiah
continues the theme of hope; hope
of fulfillment of God’s promise of
Israel’s restoration. This will happen
when God’s Spirit is upon the
Messiah. It will be a year of favor
from the Lord (illuding to the Jubilee
Year tradition, when all debts are
forgiven and those in
distress
will
be
consoled).
The Responsorial Psalm is
actually the Magnificat (Our Lady’s Canticle),
from St. Luke. This hymn celebrates the time
of favor from the Lord, when He will raise up
the lowly and topple the mighty. Jesus’ birth
brings about this time of peace and
restoration, to the earth and in our hearts.
We had lost our way by sin. God reaches
out to us, lost and confused. He brings
mercy and salvation through His Son, Jesus.
Mary’s joy pours forth in proclaiming this
coming event which began in Her.
The Second Reading,
like the ending of most of St. Paul’s letters, is a
collection of last minute instructions. Two of the
themes found throughout this Letter are joy and
prayer. Joy is the sense of peace we find doing God’s
will, and prayer is the means of discerning His will. It
is prudent to test all things, being open to God
speaking in our hearts while recognizing that at the
same time we must also listen to the Spirit speaking
to us through the Church’s Magisterium.
In today’s Gospel, St. John helps us understand what John the Baptist’s role
really is. St. John the Baptist is the one who calls us to convert in order to be
ready for the Messiah when He comes. By his own admission, he is not the
Messiah, but rather the one who points to Jesus, the true Messiah. He
considers his role to be that of preparing hearts through conversion to justice
and righteousness.
