Senior Class of 2010 Pages 2-3 Volume 14 | Number 3 | July 2010 Challenge of the high ropes Page 6 Sports Action Pages 8-9 School news, information and events Staying True To Our Mission Strong schools thrive by doing what they do best. At Fairhill, that means teaching your children, the bright students that are Fairhill. This newsletter is an update on our efforts to educate our students and provide opportunities for them to thrive academically, socially, athletically, or wherever their talents may be as well as showcase the entire Fairhill community. Since our founding, we have remained focused on Fairhill’s well-articulated mission and purpose, which is to “provide the best possible education to learning different students, emphasizing each student’s unique pattern of information acquisition, processing, and expression. To accomplish this, Fairhill focuses upon academic, social, and emotional development. Fairhill guides its students in learning to learn.” Our obligation is to provide each student with an education that prepares them for life well into the 21st century. Each year as we publish our year in review, we have the opportunity to reflect upon the accomplishments of our staff, students, parent volunteers and Board of Directors. Within these pages you will find evidence of these accomplishments as well as a glimpse at the commitment and generosity of the Fairhill community. We continue to move forward with confidence. Jane Sego Executive Director Parent’s Corner “We are absolutely thrilled to see how much our son has grown and improved over the last year. I cried when I read his Gates scores-I knew he was reading well, but 5.3! Really!! We are so, so thankful to have such a wonderful team of teachers working with him at Fairhill and know that much of his progress is due to your loving guidance and support. You are all angels and we cannot thank you enough.” Teacher Training Lissa Dallas has been selected as the recipient of an American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese to attend a study-abroad program at the Enforex Scholarship in Madrid, Spain. This will enable Ms. Dallas to enroll in two weeks of study in Spanish language and culture courses. Tuition, registration and books are included. The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese is the oldest and largest language specific organization in the U.S. It was founded in 1917 to promote the study and teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and other related languages, literatures, and cultures at all educational levels. The AATSP provides study abroad and other professional development opportunities for its more than 8,500 members. Jan Kirkland will be taking doctoral classes at Texas Women’s University. She is enrolled in a Multicultural Literature Class for children and young adult readers and an Advanced Quantitative Reading Research Class. Farewell to Fairhill Class of 2010 In a formal ceremony on May 28th, our newest flock received their diplomas and made their final preparations to leave the nest. Speakers at the ceremony included Stephen Pryor, Fairhill’s Salutatorian for 2010; Greg Loots, Valedictorian for 2010; and Dr. Brenda Kihl, Vice President of Academic and Institutional Effectiveness at Collin College. Dr. Kihl addressed attendants with anecdotes about her own struggles with learning differences, reminding all of us that any obstacles can be faced with the right attitude, focus, and support. Now a wife and mother of two children, Dr. Kihl encouraged students to focus on their strengths and weaknesses and to use that focus when setting goals for the future. Following the ceremony, family, friends, and students attended a small reception in the graduates’ honor. Congratulations, Seniors 2010! Dr. William K. Gordon, III presented Isaiah Williams with his diploma. Mrs. Melinda Cameron, Head of Upper School, introduced Fairhill Class of 2010 Valedictorian Greg Loots and Salutatorian Stephen Pryor at the Cap and Gown Ceremony. Class of 2010 Graduates and their future plans: John Anderson Lynn University Madalyn Coon Paul Mitchell College-San Diago Mickey Earsing St Edwards University Sarah Thames, Kourtlyn Krottinger, Mickey Earsing and Madalyn Coon happily posed for a photo just before the commencement ceremony. Madalyn Coon was presented her graduation mortarboard hat by her buddy Bailey Stone. Annual Cap and Gown Ceremony On May 14, 2010, Fairhill seniors, their family members, and senior buddies participated in the annual cap and gown ceremony. Upper school teachers, Deni Kington and Jennifer Allen, along with Head of the Upper School, Melinda Cameron, read letters to the seniors from their parents in a tradition that always brings a few happy tears. Senior buddies and the head of the buddy program, Gail Berkemeier, then presented seniors with their graduation caps and gowns. Honor cords were given to those students achieving high honors in art, theater, Spanish, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. To end the ceremony, Mrs. Cameron announced this year’s salutatorian, Stephen Pryor, and valedictorian, Greg Loots. Congratulations, Seniors 2010! School Days at Scarborough Faire On May 4th, the seniors attended School Days at Scarborough Faire as part of their senior picture day outing. Scarborough Faire is a renaissance festival in Waxahachie where the students were able to experience 16th century life in Britain. Accompanied by teachers Jo Prees and Jennifer Allen, seniors gathered for candid and group shots on the beautiful acreage of the faire, after which they were given time to explore and participate. Some of the activities included a glass blowing demonstration, acrobatic shows, and, of course, eating those wonderful turkey legs! Madalyn Coon, Kourtlyn Krottinger, Sarah Thames and Isaiah Williams took an elephant ride at Scarborough Faire. It lived up to its legacy of both a fun and challenging experience for students. Low element challenges required cooperation and teamwork. Students moved beyond personal fears and limitations through their participation in a series of higher challenge elements. Students also learned cooperation skills as they worked in teams studying animal habitats as well as conservation techniques. Fifth graders Lydia Reed, Isabella Serrano, Homer Smith, Lauren Minnis, Reis Kimbrell and Chris Fogarty participated in the Survival Skills class. Isabella Serrano shied away from the snake as Lauren Minnis learned how to hold it. Sixth grader Grant Gumbert met the challenge of the high ropes course. The Texas Road Trip would not be complete without a tour of the Alamo! Erin Taylor and Robbie Mitz fed the dolphins during the Òb ehind the scenesÓ tour at Sea World. Texas Road Trip Each spring seventh graders participate in the Texas Road Trip. The group enjoyed stops at Washington on the Brazos, San Jacinto, Battleship Texas and NASA before traveling to San Antonio for tours of the Alamo and Sea World. Making their way back to Dallas, students explored Natural Bridge Caverns and toured the Capitol in Austin. A trip to NASA provided an opportunity to learn about the space missions. Kenzie Appell, Cidell Rosipal, Evan Norby, Caleb Wilson, Ethan Lencioni and Max McKinney learned more about the space program during their tour. Fairhill Drama and Musicals Students from Spanish II, III, and IV performed Romeo y Julieta. The play was performed for parents, Fairhill staff and Upper School students. In April, the students of Spanish II, III, and IV performed Romeo y Julieta, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This was the sixth year for Fairhill students to participate in a Spanish play, and each year it just seems to have gotten better and better, with more elaborate sets, costuming, and music. As in the past, the play was performed entirely in Spanish with an accompanying PowerPoint in English to help explain each scene to the audience. Forty-three students took part in the production directed by Mrs. Dallas and Miss Kington. The leads of Romeo and Julieta were performed by Spanish IV student, Stephen Pryor, and Spanish III student, Erica Dallas, respectively. To add a little different twist, the setting for these star-crossed lovers was not Verona, Italy in the 1500s, but Valencia, Spain in 1969. Romeo’s family, the Monteguíos, were pro-war, fascists aligned with the then Spanish dictator, General Francisco Franco. Julieta’s family, the Capuletos, were the peace loving, flower children. Although sticking closely to the original version with strong familial conflict, the Spanish version of the play featured lighthearted characters such as the Nodriza (Nurse) played by Chris Krueger (for which he won the Best Actor in the Spanish Play Award), and the well-intentioned, but misguided, Padres played by Ross Lovell, Sam Wieland, Miles Lyon, and Thomas Hodges. Stephen Pryor, Spanish IV student, and Erica Dallas, Spanish III student, played the leads of Romeo and Juliet. Chris Krueger, played the role of Nurse Nodriza. The Future Is Bright Cordelia Garza played the “Yankee Doodle” sweetheart in the Salute to America performance. Michael Raffkind performed with enthusiasm in his role as a Yankee Doodle Dandy. Fairhill School Lower and Middle School Performing Arts presented the musical production Salute to America under the direction of Lynn Firmin and Deni Kington. The Fairhill Chorus, Fairhill Singers and Fairhill Percussion Ensemble were featured in the performance. Several patriotic numbers were presented including an original arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic featuring Fairhill Singers and Fairhill Percussion Ensemble. The audience enjoyed singing along to several familiar songs. Fairhill Acting Troupe cast and crew of And Then There Were None Back row from left: Ross Lovell, Taylor Proffer, Caleb McCandless, Chris Krueger, Stephanie Sims, Alex Sauer, Greg Loots, Mrs. Kim Mlcak, Drew Russell, Torie Shelton, Ms. Deni Kington, Kyle Brannon, Anne Lightner, Catherine Dabrowski, Thomas Hodges, Emily Plunkett, Daniel Harper, Andrew Bitterman, Nick Orr and Tim Cheatum The Fairhill Acting Troupe and Director Deni Kington presented Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None on April 30th and May 1st. The audience watched with suspense while trying to guess who was going to kill whom. Miss Kington commented that this is one of her favorite kind of performances, where not a single person is the lead character. This was the final performance for seniors Chris Krueger and Greg Loots. Travis Olivarez, Fairhill Sophomore, was selected out of several hundred applicants to attend a one week Hispanic Youth Symposium at SMU June 16-19. This symposium is the regionÕ s best leadership, college and career preparation program in the area. The program emphasized making new friends, participating in interactive workshops, learning how to get into and succeed in college. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in college scholarships. Congratulations Travis! Kyle Brannon was selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Houston this summer. The program introduces outstanding high school students to the world of medicine. With close cooperation from many prestigious and technologically advanced hospitals, research facilities and medical schools, the Forum challenges students to learn about a broad range of topics including educational requirements, career options, clinical practice and complex ethical and legal issues facing the medical profession today. Students discuss global epidemics, cures for life-threatening diseases, life as a resident, medical specialties and primary care with current physicians and patients. Kyle will participate in a simulation that challenges students to consider a specific issue in public health and to present pertinent recommendations for achieving public awareness and concern for each issue.
