What is the Dragon Sale?
The Dragon Christmas Charity Sale
brings the entire Dragon School
community together on the last day of
the Christmas Term to raise money for
charities linked to children and families.
It is a wonderful opportunity for
absolutely everyone – children, parents,
grounds men, teaching, administrative
and catering staff – to work together
during the Christmas Term, making
and creating ideas, culminating in the
wonderfully chaotic and fun Dragon Sale.
A very well done to everyone
involved in the 2015 Sale.

Dragon Sale Philanthropists
Enterprise and Philanthropy are among the many
skills the Dragon aims to nurture in children.
The Sale provides a wonderful opportunity
for any Dragon pupil who has the desire to be
an entrepreneur to create a ‘pop up’ business
for a day. Creating a stall at the Sale requires
imagination, team work and determination, and
is a test of business skills in a very competitive
market place. In rising to this challenge,
devoting many hours to creating a successful
stall and dedicating any profit to the benefit
of others less fortunate than them, Dragon
entrepreneurs can embrace and celebrate the
spirit of philanthropy. All Dragon pupils (not just
those running the stalls) can request for Sale
funds to go to a charity they wish to support by
filling out an application form from the Lodge,
or by downloading one from the Sale website.
This year all pupils will have the opportunity
to vote for a charity they believe deserves
our support. Thirty-five charities have been
nominated. Each will receive a percentage
of the funds according to the pupil vote.

Authors’ Corner
Mary Berry will be in the Rink signing copies of three of her titles,
Mary Berry’s Christmas Collection, The New Aga Book and Cook Now,
Eat Later.
We are delighted to welcome best-selling novelist Robert Harris
back to the Dragon Sale in 2015 to sign copies of Dictator, the
long-awaited third book in his Cicero trilogy. The author of nine
bestselling novels, several of which have been turned into films,
including The Ghost, directed by Roman Polanski, Robert has been
a regular and very popular guest at previous Dragon Sales.
Award-winning political journalist Isabel Oakeshott joins
us in Authors’ Corner to sign copies of Call Me Dave, The
Unauthorised Biography of David Cameron, described by the
Daily Mail as ‘ the most explosive political book of the decade.’
Isabel is a Dragon parent, former political editor of the Sunday
Times and the co-author with Philip Lymbery, of Farmageddon.
Thomas Pakenham (OD) is an acclaimed historian and arborist
and returns to his old school to sign copies of his latest book,
The Company of Trees, a travel diary of his quest to establish an
arboretum at Tullynally, where he lives in Ireland.
Lady Antonia Fraser (OD), who is unfortunately not well enough
to join us. Signed copies of her memoir, My History; A Memoir of
Growing Up, which recalls her years at the Dragon, will also be
on sale in Authors’ Corner. She is a distinguished author of many
widely acclaimed historical works, which have been international
bestsellers. The prizes she has won include the Wolfson Award
for History and the Norton Medlicott Medal of the Historical
Association.
Jonathan Bate, Provost of Worcester College, is a distinguished
biographer, critic and broadcaster. He joins us in Authors’ Corner
this year to sign his highly-acclaimed Ted Hughes; the Unauthorised
Life. A renowned authority on Shakespeare, he is also a Fellow
of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature and
Professor of English Literature at Oxford University. He has a
CBE for services to higher education and was knighted in 2015.

Authors’ Corner
We welcome back Gillian Johnson with How to Draw Everything
a book designed to help you overcome your inner critic and
discover the artist within. Also available are The Teenager Who
Came to Tea a parody of the children’s classic and ‘How to Be a
Dog’ a dog owners manual written from the dog’s point of view,
for which Gillian provided the illustrations.
Nicholas Shakespeare (OD) has been described by the Wall Street
Journal as “one of the best English novelists of our time”. His
collected stories span six continents, and take us into the intimate
lives of his characters and the dilemmas and temptations they face.
They include the novella Oddfellows, about the only enemy attack
to occur on Australian soil in WW1
Peter Frankopan joins us to sign copies of his highly-acclaimed
The Silk Roads, which is a major reassessment of world history,
examining the forces that have shaped the global economy and
the political renaissance in the re-emerging east. Peter is a senior
research fellow at Worcester College, Oxford and Director of the
Centre for Byzantine Research at Oxford University. He is also a
Dragon parent.
As the BBC’s Arts Editor, Will Gompertz has interviewed and
observed many of the world’s leading artists, directors, novelists,
musicians, actors and designers. Creativity Magazine in New York
ranked him as one of the 50 most original thinkers in the world. A
Dragon parent he joins us in Authors’ Corner to sign copies of his
book, Think Like an Artist – and Lead a More Creative, Productive Life.
Molly McGrann is a literary critic, poet and novelist. A former
editor at ‘The Paris Review’, she is the author of three acclaimed
novels, 360 Flip, Exurbia and her latest The Ladies of the House.
Originally from the USA, she is now a Dragon parent living in
Oxford with her family.
Julia Miles was born and brought up in Oxford. She studied at LSE
and later Oxford Poly and Oxford University. All her career plans
were scrapped when she married a career diplomat, Oliver Miles,
and followed him around the world for the best part of 28 years.
On returning to Oxford she became a Probation Officer and later
a psychotherapist. Her 4 children and 3 of her grandchildren have
been or are Dragons.

Authors Corner
Richard Francis will be signing his new book Adumbrationes
Fabulosae: a sketchbook of myths, a collection of original drawings
illustrating some of the best known Greek and Roman myths,
such as Orpheus and Eurydice, Jason and the Golden Fleece,
and many more. A short essay accompanies each drawing with a
commentary on the story and an analysis of the artwork. Richard
is the father of OD, Theo Harman-Francis and his brother, current
A-Blocker, Julian.
Representatives of the Oxford Preservation Trust will be joining
us again with copies of their latest title in their popular series
of guided heritage walks around Oxford, which highlight ‘hidden’
historical details usually missed by city guides. The third book is
On Foot From Catte Street to Parsons Pleasure. Compiled by
local historian Malcolm Graham, it’s beautifully illustrated by Edith Gollnast.
Children’s Authors
Cathy Cassidy is one of the UK’s top-selling children’s authors.
She was an art teacher, a magazine editor and an agony aunt
before becoming a full-time writer. She has twice won the
prestigious ‘Queen of Teen’ award. Cathy lives in Merseyside with
her husband, two dogs and a cat.
Andrew Cope is the author of the best-selling series Spy Dog, Spy
Pups and Spy Cat. Spy Dog won the Redhouse Children’s book of
the year as well as scooping the Richard and Judy award for the
7+ category. We are delighted that Andrew is coming to the sale
especially as he will be accompanied by a special guest….
Daniel Hahn is a writer, editor, and translator, with some forty
books to his name. With Leonie Flynn and Susan Reuben he has
edited the award-winning Ultimate Book Guide series of reading
guides for children and teenagers. He is on the board of a number
of organisations that deal with literature and free speech, and was
elected Chair of the Society of Authors in 2014.
12
Children’s Authors
Robin Stevens (OD) is the author of the Murder Most Unladylike
series, winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2015
in the younger fiction category. Robin grew up in Oxford, and
attended Cheltenham Ladies’ College, reading a lot of murder
mysteries and hoping that she’d get the chance to do some
detecting herself (she didn’t). She then went to university, where
she studied crime fiction, and now she writes crime fiction for children.
We are delighted to welcome back award winning illustrator
Korky Paul who will be signing books from the Sir Scallywag series
this year. Korky will also be entertaining children in Scallywag style
in MCLT! He grew up in Rhodesia and now lives in Oxford with
his family.
Clive Goddard has been on plenty of disastrous adventures
himself. He once got stranded in the USA by a volcanic eruption,
chased by an angry ostrich in Swaziland and had his rucksack
soaked by a leaky toilet in Holland. He got sunburn in Hawaii,
heatstroke in Namibia, a poisonous spider bite in South Africa and
food poisoning in Thailand. He lost his camera in Tasmania, lost
himself in Japan and got robbed in China (twice). Before becoming
a writer, Clive Goddard was a cartoonist (Horribly Famous
books). When not travelling, drawing or writing, Clive lives in Oxford.
Griselda Heppel’s first children’s book, Ante’s Inferno, won the
People’s Book Prize and a Silver Wishing Shelf Award. She’s lived
in Oxford for 30 years, and her 4 children are ODs (Rebecca,
Leonie, John and Michael Hamway). She draws inspiration from
the Dragon: Ante’s Inferno was partly inspired by a poignant piece
of the school’s history (Ned Morphew’s sad accident in 1912), and
readers of her new book, The Tragickall History of Henry Fowst, will
find some details of Northwell School remarkably familiar (though
there have been no reports of demons lurking around the library)
13
Children’s Authors
Roland Chambers (OD) has had some adventures of his own.
He’s been a pig farmer, a film-maker, a journalist, a pastry chef, a
cartoonist, a teacher, a private detective and an author. He has
lived in Scotland, Australia, Poland, America and Russia. Now he
lives with a professor next to a cake shop in London. He owns
two cats, two children and two guinea pigs.
Esme Kerr will be signing The Glass Bird Girl and Mischief at
Midnight, a series set in a castle-like English boarding school.
Esme went to ten schools and studied History at Oxford and
Cambridge. She has three children, two dogs, three cats and two
tortoises. She lives between Oxford and London.
