Macy’s Shop for a Cause Saturday, August 23, 2014 Saturday, August 22, is the last day for swimmers in Spokane City pools. Before the water is emptied and the pools are readied for winter, Spokane Parks and Recreation allows four of them to go to the dogs! Beginning Sunday, August 23, at Comstock Pool, pet owners can bring their pooches to dive, swim, and frolic with other canine water enthusiasts in the 4th Annual Doggie Dips to benefit SpokAnimal and the Spokane Parks and Rec Foundation. For $10, dogs can spend time lounging around or in the pool playing fetch or doing laps. For the past three years SpokAnimal has used the funds raised from the popular event to help maintain and enhance its Dog Park at High Bridge. This year, the Doggie Dips fall within SpokAnimal’s participation in the ASPCA Rachael Ray 100K Challenge and there will be special games, photos, and prizes incorporating the SpokAnimal Lifesaver Challenge theme. Dog owners may pre-register for the Doggie Dips through Parks and Rec or pay $10 at the pool, the day of each event. Well-mannered dogs must be attended to by an owner and have proof with them of an up-to-date rabies vaccination. Easter Egg Hunt On Saturday, April 11, over 100 dog owners and even more dogs joined in the fun of SpokAnimal’s second annual Easter Egg Hunt for dogs to benefit the Dog Park at High Bridge. Hunters were treated to hundreds of plastic eggs filled with dog treats and egg-stra special prizes. The Easter Bunny made an appearance to have his picture snapped with his canine admirers and kids’ games were held in the small dog park. Gypsy SpokAnimal supporters spent an evening at the Civic Theatre on May 28 for a special performance of the Broadway musical, Gypsy. Pictured are SpokAnimal Executive Director Gail Mackie with her daughter Cyra and board member Dr. Christel Carlson with her father, Bob. Rachael Ray Kick Off The Rachael Ray 100K Kick Off was in full effect on June 1 as dozens of SpokAnimal volunteers with adoptable pets took over the parking area of The Country Store on East Sprague. The weekend was a great success with over 60 cats and dogs finding their new forever families. See pictures on page 6. Pride Parade Marchers Gail and Family at Gypsy. SpokAnimal volunteers showed “Pride in their Pets” at the Pride Parade in downtown Spokane on June 14 . Donning their special edition SpokAnimal Lifesaver t-shirts for the first time, the group walked in solidarity against oppression for all people and their pets! Happy Time Pool Tournament Iggy with the easter bunny Yard Sale! SpokAnimal raised close to $4,000 to help our shelter pets over the weekend of May 17 and 18, as the shelter held their first benefit Yard Sale of the year. Because of its success, additional yard sales may be added to this year’s calendar of events. Stay tuned! June 1 also started a long-term collaboration between SpokAnimal and Meals on Wheels of Downtown Spokane. The two non-profits hosted a pool tournament and pet food drive at Happy Time Bar and Grill to great success. Over 1,000 pounds of food and hundreds of dollars were raised to help the pet food banks of both organizations. Pictured is SpokAnimal volunteer, Oceana, with some of the donations. 5 If these activities look like fun, please consider volunteering to help at a future event. See the list of upcoming events on page 4 and contact Christy Kruse at [email protected] if you are interested in participating. ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge June 1st - August 31st SpokAnimal is competing with 49 other shelters across the country for a chance at more than $125,000- including the grand prize of $100,000. The 2014 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition to find homes for more animals than ever before. SpokAnimal 100K Challenge events can be found on the national 100K website: http://challenge.aspcapro.org/shelter/SpokAnimal%20 C.A.R.E./events. The staff and volunteers of SpokAnimal have taken on a 100K Challenge theme of “SpokAnimal Lifesavers.” Watch for them around the area in their red lifeguard themed t-shirts and colorful vinyl Lifesaver-colored wristbands. Every family member who adopts a pet from SpokAnimal this summer will receive a wristband and also have their photos posted to the Rachael Ray 100K national challenge website. During the Challenge months of June, July, and August, SpokAnimal is tasked with finding homes for almost 1,200 pets in order to qualify to win the $100,000 grand prize and beat their 49 competitors from across the nation. A full schedule of summer outreach and adoption events are scheduled to help us find homes for as many pets as we can! In addition to the grand prize of $100,000, SpokAnimal is also competing for a $25,000 Community Engagement prize and is reaching out to individuals, businesses, clubs, churches, youth groups, and anyone who wants to get involved in raising money, adopting pets, and helping the shelter this summer. There are unlimited ways that groups can help bring awareness to SpokAnimal and the Rachael Ray 100K Challenge. To find out more, call Emily at SpokAnimal at 534-8133 x 216. We had a successful Rachael Ray 100K Kick Off Event on June 1st adopting out over 50 dogs and cats. 6 Last Stop In Forever Homes Many of the animals that come to us via our partner shelters and rescues have had not one or two, but some have lost several homes. This is why it is so important to not just make an adoption, but a great match with the right home. It’s not enough to just get animals out of the shelter; it’s not about calculating numbers in a spreadsheet at the end of the month. We’re celebrating pets starting new adventures with great people who will love them for the rest of their lives! We hope the wonderful families shown here will be these animals “last stop” and forever homes. These are just a few of the animals who got a second chance, thanks to our staff, volunteers, sponsors, contributors, and YOU! 7 Volunteer Corner Volunteer “Family” of the Quarter The last few months have been very busy here in the volunteer corner. We have had quite a few more events than this time last year, all of which have been a big success. Chances are if you attended any of these, you probably ran into the Dalton family. That is why they are our wonderful “Volunteer Family of the Quarter!” Cynthia and Kennedy started volunteering with us last year, as Kennedy is planning on becoming a veterinarian and loves to work with animals. Within a few months, her brother and sister, Tim and Brooklyn, both started volunteering and really enjoy it. The last one to join our volunteer corps is Keith, their dad, (if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em)! Now they all volunteer with us here at the shelter, at Outreach events, and also Petco and PetSmart. We are lucky to have them! In the last three months alone they have contributed a cumulative 200 plus hours to SpokAnimal! Thank you, Dalton family, you are awesome! If you and your family are interested in doing some giving back this summer, please contact Christy Kruse at [email protected]. Would You Like to Volunteer at SpokAnimal? Summer is here (Whoo-Hoo!) and with it came the Rachael Ray Challenge (more Whoo-Hoo‘s!) This means a busy, busy next few months filled with Mega Adoptions, Public Outreach events, and Fundraisers, all requiring volunteers to be successful. In the first two weeks in June, SpokAnimal had over 250 volunteer offsite openings to fill, and we did it! With the help of over 50 volunteers at our June 1st Kickoff Party, we adopted out 54 animals in one day, and we haven’t slowed down yet. We are doing adoptions at the Outdoor Movie Series at Riverfront Park on Wednesdays, “Angels in the Outfield” adoption events at four different Spokane Indians games. We’re hosting a huge fundraising auction (Wags to Riches), having some fun at our Doggie Dips, and marching in the parade at Valleyfest, just to mention a few of our upcoming events. Please take the time to review our Calendar of Events and contact Christy Kruse at volunteers@spokanimal. org if you are interested in participating. If you would like to help out at the shelter as well, please apply online at www.spokanimal.org. Orientation dates are the second Saturday of each month at 10:30am, and the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:00pm at SpokAnimal, 710 N Napa - (July 12th, August 9th, September 13th at 10:30 am, and July 24th, August 28th, and September 25th at 6:00pm.) We would love to see you there! What is My Dog Saying? Volunteers are invited to attend the “What is My Dog Saying?” body language lecture at Diamonds in the Ruff, free of charge. Lectures are held monthly, contact Christy for a free pass at volunteers@ spokanimal.org or (509) 534-8133 x 216. The next lecture will be held at Diamonds in the Ruff on Friday, July 18th, 6:30-9:30PM. There is no lecture in August. The next opportunities will be September 12, October 10 and November 14. Volunteer Opportunities K-9 Crew Responsibilities of crew members include exercising and socializing shelter dogs, cleaning kennels, washing dishes and feeding pups- just to name a few of the tasks that the crew helps with. To keep everyone safe, dogs must be walked on a leash. Bathing dogs and basic grooming is an essential task in some instances. Keeping 8 track of the exercise time a dog receives is required- we like to make sure each one of our pups get the same attention and play time! Feline Crew Feline crew members have the important task of holding, loving, brushing and playing with cats to keep them socialized and entertained during their stay with us. Crew members also help maintain a healthy and sanitary environment for our kitties. This job includes assisting in cleaning litter pans, disinfecting cat kennels and making sure the kitties have food and water available at all times. Offsite Adoption Crew Volunteers represent SpokAnimal at different offsite locations. Crew members are responsible for setting up and breaking down crates, x-pens and tables, along with answering questions about the adoptable animals, providing care to those animals and accurately completing adoption paperwork. Adoption Follow-Up Calls Crew Make calls to new pet parents following their adoption, and check on the animals transition into their forever home. This opportunity can be done from the comfort of your home, and Continued on page 9 Would You Like to Volunteer at SpokAnimal? (continued) on your time. This requires asking the new adopter just a few simple questions about how everyone is adjusting, and we provide a script with the questions. Special Events Crew Represent SpokAnimal at community events and fundraisers. The variety of tasks at each event includes, but is not limited to, planning, phone calls, mailings, set-up, teardown and evalu- ation. Assist with one event or several throughout the year. Foster Care Crew Our foster care crew cares for shelter animals in their own home. It could be kittens or puppies that are too small or too sick to be in the shelter and need love and care for a short period of time. Once they are old or well enough to be adopted they can come back to the shelter or their foster parents can take them to offsite adoption events. SpokAnimal provides everything you need, from food and bedding to medication- you provide the space and all the love that these little critters need! Classes and information are offered for those interested- see our online Foster Application Packet on the website for more information. Additional paperwork for home visit is required for our foster program. Sharing his Talent with Spokane’s Dogs - Again! You may remember Keign Vedvick, the young man who was responsible for building and installing the ultra- sturdy picnic tables that can be found throughout SpokAnimal’s Dog Park at High Bridge. At 14, Keign decided to earn his Eagle Scout honors by building the benches and working with local contractors and suppliers to have the materials donated. From November 2010 to April 2011, Keign worked to collect more than 1,000 pounds of Trex and other building materials, then use it to construct close to a dozen tables with the help of his dad and other scout buddies. He was recognized for his volunteerism both locally and nationally by the ASPCA. Now Keign is at it again. This time, he’s set his sights even higher (literally) by managing a new effort that will earn him credit towards his culminating senior project at Lewis and Clark High School. Thanks to his enthusiasm, professionalism, and community-mindedness, the Dog Park at High Bridge will soon boast two new covered shelters for canines and their owners to enjoy. 9 “Keign approached SpokAnimal last fall with his ideas,” said Director of Development Shelley Sharp. “Of course we loved it and we knew from working with Keign before that this is a highly-capable, resourceful young man who carries a project through from beginning to end…and the quality of his work speaks for itself with the longevity of the benches he built three years ago.” According to Sharp, Keign has been diligent at working with the SpokAnimal staff, the City, and local businesses to prepare for the final phase. Keign’s build will start in the upper dog park where a 12 x 12 foot pole structure will be raised beginning in mid-July over a cement pad. If his materials and time allow, he will build a smaller shelter in the lower park. To see him in action, visit the dog park beginning July 14, or keep an eye on The SpokAnimal’s Dog Park at High Bridge Facebook page. Wrigley Writes Hi, Friends! “Oh, I am so excited! My human just told me today that I get to go visit the prison with her and hang out with the handlers for the between-session orientation classes in just a few weeks. I can’t wait! And, you know what? There is a whole new group of prison pups that will be heading to summer camp at the end of July. Can you help pack their bags? I will let my human tell you about what they need. Oh, they are going to have so much fun! I can’t wait to meet them all!” Thank you, Wrigley. He is right. The prison dogs do have a great time while they live and work with their handlers. You are a huge part of that reason due to the generous donations we have received from you. I am excited to report that we have been able to almost completely replenish the treat supply already, before our next group goes in. And we have been able to replenish some of the dogs’ favorite toys. But we still need a few things to help pack the bags of the dogs heading off to summer camp, as Wrigley says. Our Amazon wish list has been updated to reflect our current needs. We do have a few treats that are needed to help finish filling the treat bins, and a few toys to help replace the worn and tatter ones, but we also are in need of a few general supplies such as collapsible water bowls. These bowls are used by the dogs while they are working out in the large ‘dog yard’, and have been previously approved for use within the facility. If you would rather not shop on Amazon, you can find these same items, or some very similar to them at Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile on Spokane’s South Hill. They are more than happy to help you select items for the prison program and will even make sure they get to the program to save you another stop. If you are unable to visit the store, they can take orders over the phone, for the program, for you convenience. Gift cards are always a welcomed donation. So, before you head out for your summer fun, take a moment and help pack the bag of one of the new prison dogs heading off to summer camp. All of the handlers, the Pawsitive Dog Program prison staff, and the Pawsitive Dog Program training team would like to wish you all a happy and fun filled summer and thank you for your continued support! Wr i g ley 10 Baffled By Behavior? Dear Stanley, man 2 year old Ger a ve ha I i, H He’s is a great dog. Shepherd and he ts. ca s ng but he hate snuggly and lovi lle ki d d two cats and ke ac att s ha e H ould tever I did he w on of them. Wha vior ha be t. Can this not drop the ca be trained? Signed, es Fixated on Felin Dear Fixated, When it comes to predation it isn’t about “hating” cats, but wanting to have them for lunch. It’s not aggression, but a hard-wired hunting reflex. Predatory drift is when the sight of a small scurrying dog might trigger that reflex, too. He may not recognize it as his own species until it’s too late, so dogs who are triggered by a running cat should also avoid mixed‑size dog parks and leave if someone shows up with “catsized” pup. Prey drive comes in varying degrees and some breeds and individu- als within breeds naturally have higher prey drive hardware installed than others. Prey drive is also why most dogs love to chase tennis balls and squeak squeaky toys. Low prey drive is why many Chows don’t care about tennis balls. “You threw it, you go get it!” Predation is less commonly seen in dogs who have imprinted on another species as “family” as young puppies. Baby greyhounds reared with bunnies and cats are more likely to be safe with them as adults. Socialization is key. A really reliable “come” when called and a rock solid “leave it” are es- sential skills for a dog with a high chase instinct. With a lot of diligent practice, good training can give you control when you are right there SUPERvising your dog. But don’t take chances. He should never be trusted with kitties or other small furry things. Prevention and management are key. Fence your yard to keep your dog safely contained and neighborhood cats from getting in. Their lives depend on it. St a n ley Happy Tails Half Pint is now “Fred!” What a lucky dog to have found a home with two of the kindest people in Spokane - Jocelyn & Stan Paluch! 11 Foster mom! We knew MommaCat was a sweet lady when she came to us, but didn’t realize what a truly great momma she is until yesterday, when we put two 10-day-old, orphaned Shih Tzu mix puppies with her- and she started to care for them as her own!!! MommaCat and puppies are safe and sound in a foster home, and puppies are happily nursing away. This precious family may be available for adoption near the end of the Rachael Ray 100KChallenge! Purrs, Licks & Tailwags Thank you! We are so appreciative of the wonderful students and other groups in our community to engage to help our shelter pets! If you have a fundraiser idea for SpokAnimal, please call Shelley at 5348133, ext. 209. The fraternities and sororities of Eastern Washington University came together to spread the word to the college and Cheney communities to go to the local Froyo Earth and purchase yogurt to help raise money for their clubs. Twenty percent of Froyo purchases went to the Greek system, which the students chose to pay forward to SpokAnimal. Thank you, BECKER! Our friends at SpokAnimal got a new GMC Savana Van, looking good!!!! CONGRATS. We appreciate everything you guys do for the animals in the Spokane area. You guys ROCK!! From the Executive Director Dear Friends, Your gifts to SpokAnimal have transformed the lives of animals in our care. Donations come in many varieties and purposes providing food and shelter, spay/neuter services, humane education, extensive medical care for shelter pets, transports of at risk northwest pets to SpokAnimal for adoption, and the list continues. For those of you who work for companies that have matching gifts program, you can maximize your help. Moving into June, we began the Rachael Ray $100k Challenge. This enables us to help even more at risk animals in the northwest. Please adopt if you can and send your friends in to find the pet of their dreams. Along with the handling of more animals than ever from our rescue partners, the stress level on staff increases. I want to take this opportunity to thank those who have brought our staff and volun- teers cookies, ice cream and hugs. It all helps us keep our focus and remember that we are appreciated. Our volunteers have been rocking the offsite adoptions under the watchful eye of Christy Kruse, our volunteer coordinator. They have a goal of 12 adoptions each weekend they have an offsite event. So far, they have been meeting or exceeding their goals. Director of Development, Shelley Sharp and the auction committee have been working diligently to bring you the best of auction items and to make it an event to remember. Please give us a call if you have an item to donate or would like to procure items for us. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our hard working Board of Directors for all their guidance and patience. Angela, our Director of Information Technology Systems (DITS according to her) is on top of all our informational gathering, 12 Big thanks to No-Li brewhouse for featuring SpokAnimal as June’s Charity of the Month! What is the Charity of the Month Taster Tray Program? “Supporting the community that supports No-Li is incredibly important to us. Our Charity of the Month Taster Tray Program is a way to give back to the people and organizations that make Spokane so special.” Thank you, Barbara Grant for providing much welcomed snacks for the staff after a particularly long week! We love you! posting and Rachael Ray stats. Laura Thulean, Director of Operations has done a phenomenal job running the business, coordinating with staff and clients, and being my right hand. Alicia Finch is our Shelter Manager and transport coordinator. Without her, we would not be teaming with so many groups to bring the best of animals for your perusal. Lisa, doing foster care; Jeff, coordinating with WSU; Eileen, Farm Livin’; Dave, dog park maintenance and get-er-done guy; Tamarah, Halfway Hounds; Kim, the prison program; Carol, education, prison dog, newsletter, all working together to make a diffference. Your Final Message: “When sharing a meal, be it a slice of pizza or the bone of a steak or the end of a child’s string cheese, that is communion. When giving birth and caring for and raising and teaching a child, that is faith. When living with a dog, such as you, in a home, sharing a space and a life and a single heart, that is a covenant. When looking into your eyes, really looking as if expecting to find something there, they will see the face of God. When they come home and you greet them at the door, no matter the circumstance, no matter the time or place or loss, your tail and body and tongue and spirit are in motion, and that love is Grace, that greeting Shalom. And that, finally, is the greeting you will end on for all the people who have ever come in contact with a dog. Simply and forever: Shalom.” - You are a Dog: Life Through a Man’s Best Friend, Terry Bain Would you like to share a special honorarium for a departed loved one in the SpokAnimal newsletter?
