INVITATION TO QUOTE
Issue 4 -2014 FROM THE HEAD-PREFECT’S DESK I am very privileged to be graduating from CHIJ Kellock on the year of its 50 th Anniversary. It is indeed an honour to share with all of you my journey at Kellock in this issue of Kellock Connects! In my six years as a student at CHIJ Kellock, what stood out for me were various experiences that I personally encountered in the school. Of significance is the opportunity to participate in the first ever Head Prefect Campaign this year. The campaign required a lot of hard work but thankfully, with God‘s grace and the support of my parents, the school leaders, teachers and my campaign team, the experience turned out to be very meaningful because it gave the student body an opportunity to have a voice in the election of the Head and Vice-Head Prefect. Whether as a prefect or a Head Prefect, I have been very privileged to serve the school and be the voice of the student body. For example, I was part of the team that guided the student leaders in planning a successful Teachers‘ Day. We had loads of fun! Every Friday during morning assembly, members of the Prefect EXCO Team, take the opportunity to share with the students, feedback and suggestions gathered. These and other events taught me that being a leader is not about ME but about OTHERS and how I can make that difference to others. Another experience that I treasure dearly is the annual Children for Children (CfC) event. This is a very meaningful event as it gives the students of the school an opportunity to be a blessing to others. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for the less fortunate and to bring joy to the underprivileged children. Seeing the smiling faces of the underprivileged children enjoy themselves at the various venues over the years has indeed been a most fulfilling experience. Whether as a student facilitator or a performer, every CHIJ Kellock girl has a chance to make that difference to someone. I count myself very lucky to have been a member of the school‘s Netball Team. The journey towards the title of National Champions was not always smooth, but we learnt never to lose hope, to keep our eyes on our goal and to work as a team. The experience will be something that I will keep close to my heart as a reminder of the importance of perseverance, resilience and teamwork. Indeed Kellock has taught me to be a principled yet caring person who has the courage to stand up for what is right without compromising the values of Graciousness, Integrity, Responsibility, Respect and Love. These values have shaped me to be the person I am today. For this, I thank the school leaders, teachers, non-teaching staff, coaches and my friends at school for being on this journey with me. I will cherish these memories of Kellock wherever I go. To all the girls of Kellock, remember to uphold our school motto, ―Simple in Virtue Steadfast in Duty‖. Sabrina Chau Head Prefect, Class of 2014 UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS General Repair and Repainting / Upgrading Works We are pleased to inform you that 95% of the painting works has been completed. Only a small section of the external works remains to be painted. All painting works will be completed by end of the month and the school will look as good as new. We have also just completed the water-proofing works in the rooftop to improve the overall drainage of the roof. The school fire alarm system will also be upgraded in October as part of the school‘s commitment to, and emphasis on school safety Primary Education Review and Implementation (PERI) Upgrading The upgrading of CHIJ (Kellock) will be deferred by one year and the school will move to the holding site at former New Town Secondary located at 121 Queensway Singapore 149059 from January 2017 to December 2018 instead. The change in plans is due to a delay in project completion for the school currently holding at the former New Town Secondary site. Safety Haze Management As the safety and health of our staff and pupils continues to be a priority, the school has put in place a Haze Management Plan. We are monitoring the air quality closely through the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) index from NEA and responding accordingly should the air quality deteriorates. All the designated air-conditioned rooms are equipped with air purifiers in the event that a special room is required for anyone who is feeling unwell and requires a room to rest in. The pupils have also been briefed on the Haze Evacuation routes in preparation for movement to the specially allocated indoor holding rooms. The canteen vendors are also prepared to serve Set Meals in the holding rooms should the PSI reach a ‗very unhealthy‘ level. If your child/ward has asthma and uses the inhaler, it is imperative that she brings her inhaler to school daily. This would ensure that she has immediate access to the inhaler should the haze trigger an asthma attack. 2 Travel Declaration With the November-December school holidays around the corner, an email blast will be sent to you regarding the submission of your year-end travel plans on MC Online portal. You are only required to submit a declaration if you and your daughter/ ward are traveling during this holiday period. K50 Celebrations – School Commemorative Magazine We would like to thank all parents, pupils, staff, ex-pupils, ex-staff and all friends of the school for their support throughout the year-long celebration of our school‘s 50th anniversary. This anniversary celebration was made all the more memorable because of the connections and the ties that we formed as a community during events such as the inaugural Homecoming Garden Party for ex-girls and our K50 Gala Dinner. Remembering these ties and connections is, however, not as easy, as time does erase these cherished moments. In fact, the last time that we captured these precious moments of life at CHIJ Kellock in the form of a commemorative magazine was in 1974! Turning 50 is definitely a milestone that comes once in our lifetime and therefore, it was only apt that we decided to publish the 2nd commemorative magazine, which will be released in November. This magazine hopes to capture the journey of CHIJ Kellock over the past 50 years and will be a magazine that all girls, past and present, will want to keep as a memento of their time in CHIJ Kellock. Children for Children was held at the Universal Studios Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa. This is the 7th consecutive year that we are staging this event - one that is very much aligned with our school directions and reminded our pupils and staff of the importance of caring for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. The theme for this year‘s Children for Children is InspirACTION: Start, Show, and Share Kindness Today. InspirACTION encourages each child to be a kindness ambassador who inspires kindness through kind acts rendered with a cheerful and joyful heart. Participants at this year‘s event learnt that kindness is what it takes to make the world a better place. Children for Children provides pupils with an opportunity to learn values such as empathy and compassion and put these values into action as pupils give up their time in service of a worthy cause. Pupils are empowered to make a positive difference in another child‘s life, driving home the message that no child is too young to start making a difference in the life of others. Pupils of CHIJ (Kellock), supported by the staff of the school, set up craft and games booth, put together gift packs, penned heartfelt messages as well as put up performances to drive home the message of starting, showing and sharing kindness. Staff Movement CHIJ (Kellock) welcomes on board the following staff and looks forward to their contributions to the school. They are: Ms Cecil Infante – ICT Executive Mr Daniel Tan – ICT Technical Assistant We are also happy to announce the return of Ms Mary Soh, HOD / Creative Arts, who has just completed her studies. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the following staff for the ‗little‘ additions to their families: Mdm Tauled Tunisha - Subject Head / Mother Tongue Language Mrs Shashi Kumar – Subject Head / ICT Mdm Lin Qiu Yan - Teacher Mrs Esther Tan - Teacher We bid farewell to the following staff and we wish them well in their future endeavours: Mr Leo Oliverou – ICT Executive Mr Jemrey Paraluman – ICT Technical Assistant 4 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 Diamond How can we not forget when we were still petite seven-year-olds, nervous and excited about entering a new school? I can vividly remember counting off my fingers: ―Hey, I still have five more years to go!‖ In the blink of an eye, the five years have whizzed past us. We have made new friends, built strong friendships and memories that we will never forget. People say, ―It‘s not about how you begin, but how you end.‖ How true the saying is! As a Sports class, the values of determination, sportsmanship and resilience are evident in our lives. For two years, we have become wiser through learning to juggle both our school life and our involvement in our Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), both in the Sports as well as the Arts Training for our various competitions is no bed of roses. All of us regardless of our CCAs, worked hard for our competitions and the results have borne fruit. Below are our achievements: Netball: 1st in Junior Division (2013) and 1st in Senior Division (2014) Rhythmic Gymnastics: 3rd in C Division (2012), 2nd in B Division (2013) and 4th in B Division (2014) Dance Ensemble: Distinction in the SYF Art Presentations 2014 As a tribute to our teachers who are often overworked, and are hardly appreciated, allow us to dedicate these next few paragraphs to them. Some view teachers as instructors but our teachers have done more than instruct- they have gone the extra mile to care for us, to love us. Last year, we were taught by two very special teachers, Miss Mishal Lim and Miss Tay Sze Leng. These two teachers definitely made a difference in our lives and helped us when we were going through all our ups and downs. This year, we were taught mainly by Mrs Janet Tan and Mrs Philomena Wong. In addition, we would also like to thank our science teacher, Miss Yee Kwan Ngah, our PE teacher, Ms Gwi Kiat Hoon, our Mother Tongue teachers as well as our lovely PE teacher, Miss Christina Tan, who left to further her studies at NIE. We would like to thank them for encouraging us and helping us all the way in our final year at Kellock. This definitely has been a meaningful and important year for all of us. To all our teachers, past and present, we pay tribute. You have taught us to live our lives using our hearts—to do all things with great love, just like how our most wonderful teacher of all, Jesus Christ, did. So friends, we will end off with some advice for you, a sentence that our form teacher, Mrs Tan always says: ―You live the life that you choose.‖ Life will always provide opportunities for you and there is no such thing as ‗no choice‘. Make a choice, but make sure that it is the right one. 5 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 Jade Having been in CHIJ Kellock for six years, the pupils of Primary 6 Jade 2014 are proud to say that CHIJ Kellock has changed our lives greatly. The beautiful memories that Kellock has created for us will never be forgotten. When we first stepped into the school, we were immature and playful young girls. However, after the six years at Kellock, we have become sensible and mature young ladies. Kellock has inculcated the values of Graciousness, Integrity, Responsibility, Respect and Love in us through daily activities. The school has also provided us with a holistic education, emphasizing that academics is not the most important thing in life. It is more important to be an all-rounder and to have a balanced education. With our teachers‘ guidance, we have become strong leaders and our kind and caring teachers have certainly made a huge impact on our lives. This way, being the oldest pupils in the school, we can influence our juniors positively. In view of the fact that we had to take PSLE this year, our teachers tried to make the lessons more interesting but with full focus on our syllabus so that we would pay attention in class and would be able to achieve our desired grades in school. The teachers of Primary 6 Jade have also given us handmade bookmarks, food and other things as a form of encouragement. Therefore, we want to commend the two teachers of Primary 6 Jade, Mrs Dawn Tan and Miss Poon Pei Ping. Thank you for being so encouraging! We, the pupils of Primary 6 Jade 2014, will never forget you, the two great teachers who encouraged us through a stressful year as we prepared for our PSLE. Of course, there are definitely many other teachers who have made a difference in our life at Kellock, teachers who helped groom us to who we are today, our past teachers and together with our present teachers like Mr Tan Wei Qiang, our PE teacher and our Mother Tongue teachers. The names will be too long to list but we are certainly very grateful to all of them. All in all, as we bid farewell to our beloved school, we pay tribute to CHIJ Kellock and all our teachers, past and present, who have nurtured us to become young ladies who uphold the school motto: Simple in virtue, Steadfast in duty. Finally, we would like to wish Kellock a very happy 50th birthday! Once a Kellock girl, always a Kellock girl; Once an IJ girl, always an IJ girl. We will never forget the little blue pinafore of ours. Je t‘aime et merci pour tous CHIJ Kellock! [I love you and thank you CHIJ (Kellock) 6 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 RUBY Here is a tribute from P6 Ruby First of all, we would like to thank all the teachers, past and present, who have taught us for the past six years, and… although some of us may not have been on the best side of our teachers, we still would like to thank you all for taking the time to teach a class as uncontrollable as ours! To Mrs Tang, we thank you for teaching us English and giving us motivational talks throughout the entire year! To Mrs Hong, we want to thank you for helping us improve our Mathematics and encouraging us to do better! You‘re awesome too. To all our Mother Tongue teachers, a big thank you too! To Ms Lui, your Science teaching methods are superb! Sometimes, we wonder if you were an exscientist. You helped us to pull up our grades and raised our low self-esteem with the videos you have shown us. We would also like to thank the teachers, vice-principals and principals who have taught us values and given us great memories in our six years in school. These wonderful memories and lessons will remain forever etched in our hearts and minds. Lastly, we want to thank our friends and parents who have supported us throughout these six ―adverturous‖ years in Kellock. We really appreciate all your love and support. Thank you! 7 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 OPAL Through the two years of being together in Opal, we have had many important memories of friendship and fun. There have been bad experiences for everyone, but our classmates and families have comforted us and we have learnt to look forward to the fun rather than to dwell on the negative. We have had many wondrous experiences not only in special activities but in class with our loving teachers and special, one-of-a-kind friends. Nowadays after school, most of us go to Vivo City with our friends to eat out and have fun. The adventures Opal experienced together are irreplaceable. We developed courage during our Primary Five Team Building Camp. We excitedly attended the NE Show which was a show one would never forget! A truly fun filled adventure, indeed! At the start of our Primary Six life, we had a chance to become a buddy and help the Primary Ones. Being able to help our younger sisters was a chance to give back to our school and show gratitude to our buddies when we were Primary Ones. PSLE was another adventure. Every day, we had practice papers to do, practice papers to hand in and practice papers to go through. Every morning before our PSLE papers, the rest of the students, teachers and even the principal would always wish us good luck. Of course we had many more adventures together like our Sungei Buloh Trip, Science Centre Trip and dance lessons for Jazz and Hip Hop, just to name a few. Opal girls have many habits. One in particular is talking- selectively. We talk when we are told not to, but during class discussions we are so quite that you could hear a pin drop. Clapping for teachers for absolutely no reason is our other funny habit. Once, when our science teacher, Miss Lui Ling, walked into the classroom, we clapped enthusiastically. She was surprised at the ‗reception‘ and gave us her special look! Our habits are ridiculously funny, peculiar and precious to us as memories of 2014 Primary Six Opal. On behalf of all Opal girls, we wish to thank our parents for struggling with us through the PSLE examination period, Ms Pereira, our Form teacher, vice-principals and principal for arranging the PSLE post-activities such as the upcoming Primary 6 Bazar and the Malaysia trip. We would also like to thank all our teachers, past and present, our Mother Tongue teachers, our friends for providing comfort through hard times during the year. 8 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 SAPPHIRE 2014 is the year for of the PSLE. Nervous – that was how our class felt as we started 2014. We thought that 2014 would be a very difficult year to overcome since we were taking our PSLE but it turned out to be quite different from what we had expected. We studied hard. We tried our best to understand what our teachers taught us and applied it during our examinations. If we could not understand what our teachers had taught us, we would ask them to explain further. We had difficulties in our studies such as Math, but we still managed to overcome them as a class with the support of our teachers and parents. Despite all our difficulties in our studies, we also had moments that we will remember such as the time when our teachers told us jokes and stories. We appreciate what our teachers have taught us, how they tolerated some of our classmates‘ nonsense and prepared us for the PSLE. Besides learning in class, our class also found the time to relax and get to know one another better. Wow, how time flies…PSLE is over. It is already coming to the end of the year and we will definitely miss our teachers and friends as we will be going our separate ways. We would like to thank the school for organising multiple activities and arranging learning journeys which help us to learn things such as the Science Centre trip where we learnt more about leaf litters. From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank our Form Teacher, Ms Yee Kwan Ngah, our Mother Tongue teachers, all the teachers, past and present and the school for all they have done for us. 9 FROM THE DESK OF OUR PRIMARY 6 PUPILS P6 TOPAZ Our class had many fun and memorable moments together. One of them was when we had our class breakfast in the canteen together with our Form Teacher, Mrs Doris Lee and Co-Form Teacher, Ms Gwi Kiat Hoon. Our class is very energetic when it comes to activities in class. There are many memories formed and friendships built during the year and we will always remember them. We love our teachers and we would like to thank them for being with us and teaching us methods that really helped us learn and understand better. We, Topaz, would also like to thank our teachers, past and present, our Mother Tongue teachers, our parents, our vice-principals and principal for being there for us throughout our years in Kellock. We would also like to extend our heartiest congratulations to all our P6 friends for completing a fun-filled time in Kellock! All the best in your future endeavours! Topaz will remain as a very special class to us and we will always treasure these beautiful memories. 10 Our Term 3 Activities ________ PSG Mid-Autumn Festival @ Kellock ~ 29th August 2014 ~ Snowskin Mooncake-Making Workshop The PSG welcomed 50 families and parent-child pairs who took part in our snowskin mooncake-making workshop. The senior citizens had fun and laughter joining in to guess 谜语 (chinese riddles) and won prizes too, contributed by P3 parent Stella Lin Ying. The evening ended off with, of course, the Lantern Walk around the school compound because it started to drizzle heavily! But that didn‘t dampen the mood of the children and little ones... all eager to take out their fancy lanterns! It was a great cultural festival topped off with learning and fun. The PSG hopes to bring this event to you again next year!
