MOMENTUM IN THE SPIRIT!
September 2016
Dearly beloved:
This fall we kick off the new program year with a great deal of purposefulness seeking to create momentum
in the Spirit for our church! Two things to plan on for early September, please.
Our 9/11 Celebrations this year take on a importance beyond themselves. There will be great worship on
September 11th on all three of our worship services. The day before 9/10 is a Day of Service where from 9
to Noon we will be serving those in need in our community. We will participate in a Regional Prayer Summit in Point State Park on Friday evening, September 9th. Sunday evening we kick off our own Covenant
Prayer Summit at 6:00 p.m. in conjunction with other churches in the Pittsburgh area who are also sponsoring prayer meetings that night. (more detailed information on the inside of the Messenger).
Our Rally Day this year is a celebration of our recommitment to Christian Ed and the young people of our
church. Pastor Kay will be preaching. We will have a special service of commissioning for both Pastor Kay
Balderose and also Jessica Hickman, as part of our new CE Team beginning this fall. Many activities and
events scheduled for Sunday, September 18th. Please join us! Please see page 5 for Rally Day Information.
As the excitement builds and we seek to know God better in 2016-2017, may we rededicate our lives in service to the One who has given all that we may have life, new life, abundant life and eternal life, even our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May this fall give glory and honor to Him!
Faithfully, Dr. Stu Broberg
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2016

DAY OF SERVICE ~ SATURDAY, SEPT. 10, 2016
On Saturday September 10th. Worship & Music is working along with the Mission Committee to
form five teams of people who would be willing to help some of the elderly people in the area (members or
nonmembers of the church) to help with whatever they need done, such as raking leaves, cleaning, painting
etc. from 10:00 AM and work to 2:00 to complete the project. If you are able to help on this day and would
like to have fun while helping others please sign up in the Commons or call the church office at 724-2220190 and we will add you to one of our teams. If you have a project that you are unable to do, and one of our
teams can complete in a four hour period or less, please call the church office with the details of your project.

MISSION MATTERS
Missions that matter sometimes come in small packages—like backpacks.
Since 2012, many churches and community groups in Washington have
supported the Washington Christian Outreach (WCO) sponsorship of
“Blessings in a Backpack.” The Blessings program provides food for over 770
school children in Washington County during the school year. Each
Wednesday during the school year, volunteers pack backpacks with nutritious
food. Each Friday those backpacks are given to qualifying children to take
home to supplement their diets over the weekend. Blessings in a Backpack Corporation (Louisville, KY)
statistics show that children whose weekend diet is supplemented perform better in school, are better behaved,
and have good attendance records.
Food for the program is purchased in bulk from Walmart using funds from contributions, not taxpayer money.
Church of the Covenant is one of the churches that supports the Blessings program financially and with
volunteer support. This year Church of the Covenant donated $5,000.00 from the 2016 Mission budget to this
important program. Volunteer backpackers are always needed. To volunteer, contact Elder Chuck Neff or any
other member of the Mission Committee. Donations to Blessings can be made through the church, identifying
the donation for “Blessings in a Backpack.”
"THANK YOU FOR GIVING TO THE LORD!"
MISSION EMPHASIS SUNDAY
World Mission work will be the theme of all three
For the second time this year our congregation has encountered a
challenge and triumphed over an unforeseen financial gap in God's services on Sunday October 2nd. The morning
plan for us. The budget 'stretch' to preserve and enhance the staff for messages will be offered by Mr. Bockari Stevens,
ambassador to the U.S. from Sierra Leone. A luncheon
Christian Education has been won. The offer of $5,000 to be
matched by other gifts has brought a response of $5,795. In as much will be held in honor of the Ambassador in the small
dining room following the 11:00am service. Please
as God loves a joyful giver, we should all take joy in these gifts,
sign-up for the luncheon in the Welcome Center and
which have won more than $10,000 to keep balance in the budget
plan
to join the Mission Committee and our guest
and welcome our new staff. Gordon Core, Chair, Stewardship Co.
speaker on Mission Emphasis Sunday.
CLEAN UP BUCKET DRIVE A
SUCCESS!!
The Church of the Covenant was well
represented as we delivered 20 Clean Up
Buckets to the Washington Presbytery to
be delivered the
people who are still attempting to clean up
from the severe flooding in West Virginia.
Twenty buckets was an awesome
contribution ~ thanks, very much, to all of
the individuals, families, groups and
committees that participated in this important effort!!
SPECIAL THANKS
I would like to thank all of the people who
helped with the LeMoyne Center Summer
Lunch Program. It was a very successful
mission as we produced many lunches each
Wednesday for children in the Washington
area. It also provided a great opportunity to
interact with members of the church family
while having fun at the same time. We are
truly blessed to be a blessing.
Dennis Myers.
ATTENTION ALL SPAGHETTI LOVERS!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!
It is that time of year again! The Mission Committee is sponsoring a Spaghetti Dinner on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, to benefit
the Haiti Mission Trip coming up in March of 2017. All proceeds are used to buy food, medicines and supplies for the Haitian
people.
Jesus said, “if you love me, feed my sheep.” By enjoying an evening of spaghetti and great fellowship, you can feed a family in
Haiti. A Chinese auction will also be available.
Volunteers are needed. Those who have helped in the past know how much fun it is, and it is a great way to get to know other
members of the church. We are also looking for people to donate baskets for the Chinese auction.
Contact Donna Carlisle (724-228-3616 or [email protected]) if you are willing to help.

RALLY DAY ~ SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2016
Rally Day is coming soon! We hope you will join us as we “RALLY FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE”!! We are gearing
up for an exciting fall in the church. We will gather for all three services on September 18, 2016. Sunday school classes
will begin that day for children and youth as well. Most adult classes will begin on the following Sunday,
September 25th.
CHILDREN
9:43 Miss Lois is ready for her group during 9:43! She has chosen fun topics for the children to learn more
and develop a deeper walk in their faith. She will meet with the children in the Covenant Kid's room. 11:00
The children will be experiencing a weekly adventure with the Deep Blue Crew through the Deep Blue
curriculum. They will gather for a time together in the Covenant Kid's room, hear a children's message in the
sanctuary and then move to their classrooms. We are so excited to have the church filled with their voices
Safe Church once again!
YOUTH
Safe Kids
Matthew 19:14 Don and Pastor Kay are gathering ideas for a fun fall for you. Be on the lookout for more information!
After a full Sunday...be ready for a picnic! We will gather in the lawn for a church wide picnic and games.
(food assignments: A-D-Bottled water, E-I-Chips/Pretzels, J-O-Salads, P-Z-Desserts)
There will be so much more on this day when we will celebrate and "Rally for a Higher Purpose"! Come join with us to
celebrate and see what we have planned!
A NEW YEAR FOR THE PRESCHOOL!
Each start up of a new year is always exciting not just for the families but for the
teaching staff and our church. We bring in new families that may not have been
associated with a church and now they can have a fresh start in saying now they can
possibly consider our church. We continue to be blessed with our 8 teacher’s creativity
and patience and the love of nurturing children’s first time school memories. We want
to bring attention to Miss JoAnn, she has faithfully taught here for 25 yrs. Standing
Ovation and claps for Miss JoAnn! Please keep in your prayers the entire teaching staff
as well as all families that attend here at this awesome Christian Preschool.
As always—stop by and visit the school to see what the children are enjoying and learning. We LOVE
visitors/helpers! I would also like to extend an open invitation to all of our programs, which are held
during the day at holidays, and special times of the year. The children sing great songs, poems and
maybe a little dance here and there. The first program is our Christmas Programs on December 20th and
21st. I will remind you as the time nears.
Once again, many thanks to Cyndi for her ”sparkling touches” on the preschool/Sunday School area to
make it a clean and welcoming school. Also, for Ralph who painted the hallways and classrooms. A lot
of time and hard work has occurred in order for our preschool to shine out into the community!
We do have a wish for this year—maybe you can make it come true! We need to continue to offer our
Stretch-N-Grow health program for the children. If you would like to sponsor a class the cost is 35.00
per class to participate. We have 12 classes once a month that participate in this program. The program
lasts for 7 months out of the 9 months The children absolutely love this program that is backed by The
American Heart Association. Thank you for considering to help us and the preschool children. Feel free
to ask me any questions about the program
Here’s to another exciting school year (26th yr.) at The Church of the Covenant. The place to be!

YOUTH MINISTRY
Youth Ministry at The Church of the Covenant!
It'll be fun. It'll be meaningful. It will change lives forever!
There's an excitement in the air as we look to launch a new ministry year to our teenagers and their friends. The
"Wednesday Warriors" will begin meeting weekly on (you guessed it) Wednesday, August 31 at 7:14 pm. This is open
to all students in grades 7-12. Our big kick-off event will be on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:14 pm with a Chick-filA bash and party at Community Park in South Strabane Twp.
Why 7:14 pm? Taking a cue from the 9:43 service, Daniel 7:14 is our theme verse....well worth your time to look it up
and read it. It will be a regular reminder of the awesome God we serve.
Then will follow:
• See You at the Pole Rally (Wed, Sept 28 at 7 pm) at The Rock in Houston PA. We will be joined by several other
church youth groups to follow up the See You at the Pole prayer event at each local school that morning.
• Monthly events called "One Night" with all of those area churches coming together. Those will occur Oct 19, Nov
9 and Dec 7 (all Wednesdays).
• Pack the Pickup food drive on Saturday, Oct 15.
There will be more to come!
Stay tuned for more details as we enter a new year of honoring
God, discipling our kids and taking His message to those that
need it.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPEMNENT
PRAYER WILL MOVE THE
HAND OF GOD!
PRAYING FOR OUR NATION
IN HARRISBURG
Do you need a touch from God? PRAY!
Do you want to see our church play a significant role in advancing God's Kingdom? PRAY!
Do you want to see revival in our nation? PRAY!
Are you up for a great road trip? Let's go to Harrisburg on September 15 and pray for our nation. Franklin Graham is taking his Decision America tour to
every state capitol in the nation. He will be in Harrisburg PA on Thursday, September 15 at noon. We'll
pile into the Coach of the Covenant at 7:00 am that
morning and head east. Bring a bag lunch. Then we'll
return about 5 or 6 pm. We will join thousands of
others in prayer on the steps of the Capitol Building.
This is not a political tour....it is to stir God's people
to pray for America. Few things are more important
than bringing our nation before Almighty God. Let
Don Nixon know if you are interested.
[email protected]
724-222-0190 x 111
The power of prayer cannot be overstated. People are healed,
lives are changed and the course of nations are altered because
God's people PRAY!
We have just such an opportunity coming to us on the weekend of September 9th to 11th. On Friday September 9th we
will be taking our van (and hopefully a caravan of vehicles) to
Point State Park in Pittsburgh to pray for revival and for our
nation. Last year 500 people showed up for this time of prayer.
We will leave the church parking lot at 4:30 pm and join hundreds of others in prayer to the Creator.
Then on Sunday evening, September 11 at 6:00 pm we will
once again commence the Covenant Prayer Summit in our
own Covenant Center. This kind of gathering will take place
all over the region as we join many other churches in lifting
our nation to God's throne on the fifteenth anniversary of 9-11.
Please join us. There is too much at stake to leave our church
and our nation without adequate prayer coverage. Let's make
sure we are part of the solution.
REMINDER FOR
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
Tuesday, September 6, 2016 is the annual joint circle
meeting and pot luck supper. It begins at 5:30pm in the
dining room and you are asked to bring a dish to share if
possible. All women are invited.

UPDATE ON THE ORGAN
REPAIR FROM DARLA
Even though an article regarding the
organ repair appeared in the 7/31/2016
bulletin, I continue to have folks asking
about the Organ: “Why aren’t you
playing the organ?” or, “I thought the
organ repair was completed.” The repair
to the Great of the organ has been
completed and paid for, thanks to the
generous giving of you, the people of the
church. However, our maintenance
person, Ralph Farabee, discovered water
damage, caused by the leaky roof, done
to the blower box of the organ. Ralph is
doing the repair himself, with assistance
of George Camlin. They are unsure
when the repair will be finished.
Fortunately, we have the grand piano in
the sanctuary, which I will continue to
play while the organ repairs are being
made.
The Covenant Kids' Choir will ring "God Bless America" on the
Kristal Bells on Sunday, September 11, 2016, during the 11:00
service. We will rehearse that Sunday morning at 10:30 in
the sanctuary. We will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of
the tragic events that so affected all of us. Parents and grandparents, please plan to bring your children to this special service.
SAVE THE DATE
Ben Bugaile, friend of The Church of the Covenant, will
be presenting an organ recital in our sanctuary on
Friday, September 30, 2016. More details will appear in the
weekly Sunday bulletins.
"Spared"
a poem written by Wendy Cope, set to music by Howard Goodall.
It wasn't you, it wasn't me, up there, two thousand feet above a New
York street. We're safe and free, a little while, to live and love, imagining what might have been- the phone call from the blazing tower, a
last farewell on the machine, while someone sleeps another hour, or
worse, to say goodbye and listen to each other's pain, send helpless
love across the sky, knowing we'll never meet again, or jump together,
hand in hand, to certain death. Spared all of this for now, how well I
understand that love is all, is all there is.

GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS FROM HANDS AND HEARTS
(From “Nutrition Today” Journal)
Good Food Choices!
SWEET POTATOES
A nutritional superstar- one of the best vegetables you can
eat. They’re loaded with carotenoids, and are a good
source of potassium and fiber. Toss sweet potato wedges
with a bit of olive oil and roast until tender and lightly
browned. Sprinkle with a spice or two: (cinnamon,
cloves, nutmeg or allspice) or savory (cumin, coriander,
paprika, chili, or curry).
WATERMELON
Watermelon is a heavyweight in the nutrient department. A standard serving (abut two cups) has one-third of
a day’s vitamin A and C, a nice shot of potassium, and
healthy dose of lycopene for only 90 fat- free salt-free
calories. And when they’re in season (like now)
watermelons are often locally grown which means they
have a smaller carbon footprint than some other items.
LEAFY GREENS
Don’t miss out on powerhouse greens like kale, collards,
spinach, turnip greens and Swiss chard . These stand-out
leafy greens are loaded with vitamins A ,C and K, folate,
potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, lutein and
fiber. Saute in a bit of olive oil with minced garlic and
season with ground black pepper and red wine vinegar
Not So Great Choices!
“ARTERY CRUST”
Judging by the label: Stouffer’s Satisfying Servings, (16
oz) White meat chicken Pot Pie has “only” 590 calories,
13 grams of saturated fat and 930 mg of sodium. But
those numbers are for only half a pie. Eat the entire pie,
as many people do and you’re talking 1,180 calories, 26
grams of saturated fat (more than a day’s worth) and
1,860 mg of sodium (more than a day’s worth).
“LIQUID SALT”
An average cup of Campbell’s regular condensed soup
has 810 mg of sodium, but most people eat the whole can
of soup, which contains 2,030 mg of sodium, more than
most adults should consume in an entire day. Look for
Campbell’s Healthy Request soups, with sodium in the
400’s (still a lot if you eat the whole can). Choose reduced sodium soups by Amy’s, Dr. McDougal’s, Healthy
Valley, Imagine foods , Tabatchnik, and Trader Joe’s.
“TRIPLE BYPASS”
Can’t decide what to pick from a restaurant menu? No
worries, now you can order not on entrée, but two or three
- all at once. Olive Garden’s Tour of Italy homemade
Lasagna, lightly breaded Chicken Parmesan, and creamy
Fettuccini Alfredo, comes with 1.140 calories, 33 grams
of saturated fat , and 3, 830 meg of sodium. Add a breadstick (1140 calories and 370 mg of sodium) and a garden
salad with dressing, (180 calories and 760 mg of sodium)
and you’ll consume a total of 1,740 calories (nearly a
days worth) and 4.960 mg of sodium (3 days worth) in a
single meal. ~ Bon Appetite!

The following books are new additions to the library:
Rejoice by Karen Kingsbury with Gary Smalley. This book is
#4 in the Baxter Family Drama – Redemption Series. The series has five books and all focus on the Baxter family. In this
novel, one couple is struggling with the near death of a child,
an event that has negatively affected their marriage. The entire
family travels to NYC for a wedding that allows them to finally have a reason to smile. (The series is recommended by
Donna Carlisle.)
The following gently used books were donated anonymously.
The Library Committee thanks the donors.
Still Life by Louise Penny. This is the first book in a very
popular series. The main character is Chief Inspector Armand
Gamache, a well respected investigator for the Surete du Quebec in Montreal. His team and he are called to a small town
near Montreal to determine if a death might be suspicious. The
author has won many awards for these books. (Recommended
by Harriett Johnson and Barb Knight)

4 major Parts listed in the Table of Contents: Part 1 Religion
Below are listed the first 3 books in the Poldark series which formed
the basis for a new television series shown on Masterpiece on PBS in
2015. The series is described as a heartwarming, gripping saga set in
the windswept landscape of Cornwall, England right after the Revolutionary War. The story line and the characters are compelling.

in Prehistoric and Primal Culture; Part 2 The Religions of
South Asia; Part 3 The Religions of East Asia; and Part 4 The
Religions of the Middle East. Judaism, Christianity and Islam
are all included in Part 4. This would be a very worthwhile
reference book for anyone interested in the study of religion
throughout the world.
Book I – Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787 by Winston
Graham. The main character, Ross, has just returned from fighting
for England in the Revolutionary War. He soon discovers that his
father has died, his family home is being run by drunken servants and
his first love, Elizabeth, thinking that Ross has died, is now engaged
to Ross’s cousin. Ross determines that he has to focus on a new life.
Revealing Jesus: A 365 – Day Devotional by Darlene Zschech.
This devotional was written to give the reader food for thought
each day about how Jesus is revealed in our everyday lives and
to give the reader courage and strength for each day. It looks
like a rewarding read for an entire calendar year.
Book 2 – Demelza: A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790 by Winston
Graham. In this novel, the reader meets Demelza Carne, a poor
miner’s daughter that Ross rescues from a fairground brawl, who
becomes a maid in his home. In time, they marry and struggle with
the problems caused by his being a member of the gentry and her
coming from a very different background.
The Holy Spirit and You: A Guide to the Spirit-Filled Life by
Dennis and Rita Bennett. Dennis Bennett was an Episcopal
priest and his wife a Christian writer.
They wrote this book together. Some of the chapter titles are:
What Do the Scriptures Say?, Introduction to the Gifts of the
Holy Spirit, the Gift of Prophecy, The Gift of Faith and The
Working of Miracles.
Book 3 – Jeremy Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1790-1791 by
Winston Graham.
In this book, Ross allows the poor residents of his area to salvage the
contents of a ship that runs aground in a storm near his home. His
involvement gets him arrested and British law says the punishment is
death by hanging. Demelza tries to run their home, raise a family
and continue the operation of their mine while he is in prison.
