I would like to thank all the current and previous board members that volunteered their time and efforts in order to provide you with the uninterrupted monthly AlMuhandes publication since 2007. A special “thank you” goes to Maha Alsadi, and all those responsible for their dedication and responsibility during the first 6 years of AlMuhandes. Now we are at a new stage where we want to go to the next level. We are introducing with this January publication a completely new design in a PDF format that will enable you to be able to carry your AAAEA publication with you with any device you want from your laptop, iPad, iPhone, or any other devices that accept PDF. With the PDF you will be able to print out the publication or save it to read later, also you will have the ability to zoom in or out depending of your reading habits. If you do or do not like the new design, please send us any feedback to [email protected] We have plenty of goals this year for our publication committee; some of those goals are to update our National brochure in order to fit all chapters, and to assist our colleagues in Texas for the upcoming National convention. Otherwise we are designing a list of publication that will be used in our chapters, one of which is a membership card that will be given to each paid member on a yearly basis, just like all professional organizations. Finally, please share our joy by providing us your chapter news and information, announcements and events or simply a good piece of information that would fit our publication. Please spread the news about AlMuhandes so we have more people interested in reading the publication, and therefore contributing to it. In this role, Deputy Chief Zaied will coordinate a portfolio of operational City agencies, including the Department of Transportation, the Parking Authority of Baltimore City, the Department of Public Works, and the Department of General Services. Deputy Director of Transportation Frank Murphy will serve as interim director of the Department of Transportation. “Mr. Zaied is an outstanding public servant and committed to improving the quality of essential services for the public,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “His expertise and knowledge will improve oversight, transparency, and service delivery of our operational agencies.” As head of the Department of Transportation, Zaied oversaw a major expansion of the popular and successful Charm City Circulator. He also expanded Operation Orange Cone, which has increased the number of lane miles paved in the city each year. Deputy Chief Zaied has served the director of the Department of Transportation since July 2010. He began working for the City of Baltimore in 1998 as a project manager and project engineer for DOT. He later served as chief of the Highway Design Section, during which time he led the design team for the streetscapes of Harford Road, Argonne Drive, Eastern Avenue, Charles Street, Calvert Street, Fayette Street, Broadway, and Eutaw Street. He also served as the chief of Conduit Division. In 2006, he left DOT to become the Director of design and school construction for Baltimore City Public Schools. With the school system, he managed a team that designed and implemented over $30 million in school improvements. “I am looking forward to working with the employees of many agencies to make them more effective and efficient,” added Mr. Zaied. Previously, Mr. Zaied served as head of the Bureau of General Services and as director of the Department of General Services. Mr. Zaied graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Arab American Association of Engineers and Architects (AAAEA), MD-DC-VA Chapter. Interim Director Murphy has served the city since 1974, when he began working in the Interstate Division. In 1987, he moved to Traffic Engineering. Murphy currently serves as the Deputy Director for Operations. He is a graduate of Drexel University and a licensed professional engineer. ALMUHANDES 14 V OLUME V II ISSUE 1 P AGE Within Reach: Drexel Engineers to Add Arms and Hands to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Drexel University- PHILADELPHIA, August 1, 2012 Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as those used by the military for surveillance and reconnaissance, could be getting a hand –and an arm– from engineers at Drexel University as part of a National Science Foundation grant to investigate adding dexterous limbs to the aircrafts. The project, whose subject harkens to the hovering android iconography of sci-fi movies, could be a step toward the use of UAVs for emergency response and search and rescue scenarios. The team, led by Dr. Paul Oh, a professor in Drexel’s College of Engineering and head of the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics department, will examine the reaction forces and torques associated with applying robotic arms to UAVs as part of his work in the Drexel Autonomous Systems Laboratory. A gantry system, like the one pictured, will be used to test the robotic arms that could eventually be mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles. UAVs currently perform passive tasks such as gathering in-flight visual data and intelligence, tasks that are performed well above ground. Oh’s team is looking at how UAVs might interact with objects at or near ground level. The group’s research focuses on developing what the NSF calls “Mobile Manipulating UAVs” –with arms and hands capable of performing active near-ground tasks. Oh envisions a broad range of applications from infrastructure repair and disaster recovery to border inspection and agricultural handling. “These types of aircraft will advance field service robotics for things like search and rescue and disaster mitigation,” Oh said. “It could help with infrastructure repair; instead of hoisting someone up to a bridge, these robots might be equipped to fly up to the bridge and start welding.” The three-year $649,999 NSF grant will charge the group with challenges such as developing a a system that would allow the UAV to interact with objects without upsetting its own stability. Oh developed the proposal and he will be joined in the research by Dr. M. Ani Hsieh, Dr. James Tangorra and Dr. Jin Kang. To better understand the forces and torques associated with the movements of limbs on a flying machine, Oh and his team intend to retrofit robotic arms and hands onto an adjustable gantry system that is configured to mimic a UAV’s lateral and longitudinal movements. Using the data gained from the gantry testing, Oh hopes to eventually build a working prototype. “Like all things that fly you want to make sure they don’t crash, and as this type of flying robot starts manipulating things in its environment it can often destabilize the vehicle,” Oh said. “This is a very challenging design problem that nobody else has ever really attacked.” ALMUHANDES 15 V OLUME V II ISSUE 1 P AGE Letter from AAAEA-Chicago to our Students in Illinois Dear Student, Congratulations on choosing a career in engineering, architecture, or information technology. On Wednesday January, 9, 2013, AAAEA-IL hosted a technical dinner seminar at the University of Illinois Chicago Camous. The focus of the seminar was a presentation on “Underwater Bridge Inspection” by Nick Triandafilou P.E., S.E., and Brian Dilworth P.E., both experienced bridge and marine structure inspectors and designers, from Collins Engineers, Inc. The presentation emphasized how bridge inspection is critical to maintaining our nation's infrastructure and ensuring public safety on our highway systems. The recent collapse of the I35 Bridge in Minneapolis has brought an increased focus to the importance of bridge inspection. Inspecting the underwater portions of bridge piers is an integral part of the bridge inspection program as many structural and stability related deficiencies can be hidden below water. In fact, the most common cause of bridge failures in the United States is scour, in which the channel bottom material below a bridge pier washes away and results in the pier becoming unstable. This presentation discussed the methods currently being used to inspect and monitor the underwater portions of our nation's bridges. As president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) at IIT, I had the honor of welcoming the AAAEA and introducing them to some of the wonderful engineering and architecture students currently at IIT. During the meeting, Mr. Almasri spoke on behalf of the AAAEA organization and briefly talked about the organization’s beginning as well as the benefits of being an active member. Even more impressive, was the discussion of the AAAEA’s vision for the future. During the meeting, a group of IIT students created a committee that will lay out the foundation and building blocks for future generations of AAAEA at IIT. Our vision for this chapter is to allow young motivated Arab engineers and architects to connect with professionals in the field and allow them to increase their network. Also we will strive to give them opportunities that will ultimately place them in highly valued and influential positions, this will eventually help them become leaders and innovators of the future. It was a great honor to have this meeting at IIT and it provided the students a wonderful opportunity to listen to great engineers and architects that have many years of experience. On behalf of all the Arab engineering and architecture students at IIT, I would like to thank the entire delegation of AAAEA for taking the time to visit our school and share their professional experience with the talented and motivated students on our campus. Please introduce yourself, education, back ground and family. My name is Hiyam Zayed Wakeem. My family’s hometown is Sielet el daher (A village near the town of Jenin, Palestine). I was born in Kuwait and grew up in Amman-Jordan. I am married to Jamal Wakeem and have two sons; Khalil (9) and Zayne (7). Hiyam Zayed Wakeem I graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology (PSU), Master of Engineering Science (PSU), and MBA in Marketing (York College of PA) ALMUHANDES My work experience is concentrated in Electronics Manufacturing. I worked in Product Engineering and Product Management for Industrial and Fiber Optic connector manufacturers. Currently, I am a Product Line Manager and Product Engineering Manager for Industrial Connectivity Solutions at Belden Inc., the Americas region. 2. How did you hear about AAAEA and how long have you been involved and what positions did you hold? A friend of mine who is a member of the AAAEA introduced me to the capital chapter in 2009. I joined the chapter that year. 2010 position à Member of Education Committee, member of Activities Committee. 2011 positions à Co-Chair of Education Committee, Chair of Activities Committee. 2012 position à Vice President of Capital Area Chapter. 3. Please provide us with some information in regard in your role in the education committee & scholarship committee in DC. In 2010, I served on the Education and Activities committees. My responsibility was to establish a scholarship program for the Capital Area chapter to encourage young Arab American students to pursue engineering pro- P AGE Interview of the Month– continue grams. I cooperated with the chapter president, at the time, to establish the criteria, requirements, and the marketing plan to promote the program. I assisted the Activities committee with the social activities planned that year. In 2011, I served as Co-chair of the Education Committee and Chair of the Activities Committee. I helped the Activities Committee in leading the planning all social events. In 2012, I served as Vice President on the Association, Capital Area chapter. 4. Did the National Conference meet your expectations? Please provide us with your feedback. The National Conference was of high standards. The Wisconsin chapter did an outstanding job in planning and executing the event. I enjoyed being part of the National Conference. My only reservation is the election process; I would like the election process to start by introducing the nominees’ credentials prior to the conference so that the members have sufficient time to know the nominees before voting. 5. What do you think of Almuhandes and do you have any suggestions? I enjoy reading Almuhandes; it is a great publication. I would like to see more interviews with members who excel in their field, or publish books and articles. Recognize those who receive awards in their respective fields, by introducing their work, Almuhandes would advance our knowledge and encourage others to write articles and introduce themselves to our association members. ALMUHANDES Hiyam Zayed Wakeem I helped the Education committee establish PDH credit hours recognized by the states of MD, VA, and Washington DC for seminars sponsored by the Capital chapter. 34 Picture of the Month Cowboys Stadium with retractable roof in Arlington, Texas AAAEA is a non-profit organization working to help it's members as well as the community as a whole.
