Welcome to our new programme brochure for
the remainder of 2013.
EXHIBITIONS
We’re delighted to announce the world
premiere of Berwick Visual Arts’ first
artist-in-residence film. ‘The Case’ by
Cecilia Stenbom, which was filmed in
and around Berwick, will premiere at
Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival
and will be shown throughout the
festival period.
You’ll also find an update from our
current artist-in-residence Stephanie
appointment in late September.
As part of the Lindisfarne Gospels regional programme, Scottish painter Ramsay Gibb tracks
down the sacred sites and ancient pathways in old Northumbria - from Lindisfarne to St
Herberts Isle.
At The Granary Gallery we continue to
bring artwork from different art collections

exhibition curated in collaboration with
the Contemporary Art Society and Queens Hall, Hexham and gives an insight into the works of art
that hang on the walls of art collectors across the North of England.
Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival takes over the Gymnasium Gallery between 26 – 29
September with an exciting and intriguing new commission by Norwegian artist Sidsel
Christensen. After the festival the Gymnasium Gallery will take a break for the winter period,
but we already have an exciting programme of exhibitions planned for Spring 2014 onwards.

Ramsay Gibb – The Pilgrim Coast

Cloister entrance, Lindisfarne.
Encompassing the wider region of Old Northumbria reaching from north of the Humber as far as
the Firth of Forth and westwards across to Morecambe Bay, Gibb has immersed himself in the
turbulent history of the land of kings, saints and pilgrims to portray its unique and still largely
unspoiled character.
The exhibition is in association with The Frances Kyle Gallery, London with support from
Northumberland County Council. Further works by Ramsay Gibb can be seen at Woodhorn
Museum, Ashington until Sunday 8 September. www.experiencewoodhorn.com
Catherine Yass: High Wire
Berwick Gymnasium Gallery
continuing until Sunday 15 September (Wed–Sun 11am–5pm)
Berwick Visual Arts and Visual Arts in Rural Communties (VARC) present the multi-channel
video installation ‘High Wire’ (2008) by acclaimed British artist Catherine Yass. The work follows
French ‘High Wire’ artist Didier Pasquette, who was invited by Yass to walk a wire between two
towers on the Red Road Estate in Glasgow. Stepping out into what were once the highest social
housing blocks in Europe, Pasquette offers us the ultimate vertiginous view.
High Wire is shown with thanks to and generous support from the artist and Artangel who
commissioned the work with Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Visual Art in 2007.

Multiple Choice – Contemporary Prints & Editions
from Private Collections in the North

Saturday 21 September to Sunday 15 December (Wed–Sun 11am–5pm)
‘Multiple Choice’ brings together prints and editions by a broad range of contemporary artists
from established figures such as Tracey Emin, David Hockney, Paul Morrison, George Shaw
and Mark Wallinger, to younger artists including Luke Stephenson, Benedict Drew, Nick
Kennedy and Stephen Palmer.
All the works have been generously lent by private collectors based across the North East of
England and illustrate that collecting contemporary art is not just for the wealthy!
The exhibition is curated in partnership with Contemporary Art Society North and Queen’s
Hall, Hexham where further works can be seen between 19 October and 23 November. For more

Berwick Visual Arts in partnership with Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival presents ‘The
Case’ a new film by Cecilia Stenbom, Berwick Visual Arts, artist in residence.
‘The Case’ brings together extracted scenarios from a fictitious police investigation with views
on crime and the risk of violence, told through a combination of characters and haunting
voiceovers. The script was developed using actual recorded conversations with people living
or working in Berwick-upon-Tweed. This short film examines how crime fiction preys and
perpetuates anxiety whilst being a source of entertainment within popular culture. ‘The Case’
is a deliberately hybrid work that mixes professional actors with real people, sampling fiction
and reality to create a complex and open-ended narrative.
As a Swedish artist living in England, Stenbom has used ‘The Case’ to make a work that
explores her own very specific interest in how notions of identity are connected over The North
Sea through popular fiction.
‘The Case’ is shot in and around Berwick-upon-Tweed and was commissioned by Berwick Visual
Arts and Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival.

Sidsel Christensen - Study for Composition X
Berwick Gymnasium Gallery
Thursday 26 September - Sunday 29 September (11am-6pm)
Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival presents a newly commissioned moving image work
from Norwegian artist Sidsel Christensen. ‘Study for Composition X’ was created on
location in Berwick in August, capturing the geological qualities of the landscape and
coastal line using the human form with the artist’s body as an interactive framing device.
Berwick Visual Arts second artist in residence is Filipino born, Austrian based
Stephanie Misa. The residency in partnership with the Centre for Rural Economy at
Newcastle University provides the opportunity for an artist working in any discipline to
explore current rural issues, changing concepts of rurality or rural identities whilst living
and working in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Stephanie works across a range of artistic disciplines including, sculpture, film, printmaking
and sound. Using ethnographic methods, her work examines questions of identity, immigration
and historical and cultural authenticity.
The piece specifically deals with how we see, and how we are placed, in the spaces that
surround us, and how that has affected the history of landscape portraiture in art.
In relation to the residency Stephanie said ‘The rural issues I would like to engage and bring to
the foreground are the particularities of geographic landscapes (including in Berwick-uponTweed), the natural and man-made borders that surround it, and the idea of the rural as a
uniform, unremarkable space (often held in juxtaposition to cities). I would like to be able to
contribute to the Berwick Residency by bringing forward the idea of the "un-mappable" space
and how we can engage it.’
The work will be installed on two opposing screens: one presenting the original videos created
on the Norwegian coast, in which the artist faces across the North Sea to the UK, and the other
presenting the new work, filmed in Berwick, in which the artist will return her gaze over the
water. Responding to the Festival’s theme, North by Northeast, the work will connect the two
coastal locations.
The Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University is a research centre specialising in
interdisciplinary social science, researching rural development and policy, food and society, and
the wellbeing of rural communities. The centre will provide access to research staff, facilities and
equipment to support Stephanie in the development of her work and support the distribution
and display of work that is produced during the residency period.
‘Study for Composition X’ has been commissioned by the Festival, in partnership with the
NABROAD/ Norwegian Collaborative Organisation for Contemporary Art Abroad, with the
support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Arts Council England.
Stephanie will exhibit the work produced during her residency in Berwick-upon-Tweed in
Spring 2014.
