The least that can be said o f his bill, is that it is in genious. True to the party instinct toward misrepresentation, the Independent, after a spirited-’ dissertation on the du ties o f Michigan Prohibitionists, in which was included the comments of the Lansing Republican, on the vote o f the Connecticut Legislature on the prohibitory amendment, makes the. following statement: * “Michigan has a Bepublican majori ty in both Houses o f her legislature sufficiently large to give a two-thirds majority to any act they may make a. strict party measure.” I f the very precise editor o f that sheet will take the pains to refer to Spafford’s American Almanac, for 18S3, page 228, he w ill find the political sta tus o f the Michigan Legislature -for 1SS3-4 to be as follow s: Bepublicansin House, 02; in Senate, 10; Democrats and Greenies in House, 87; in Senate, 13; Workingmen, 1; Bepublican ma jority in House, 24; in Senate, 6 ; on joint ballot, 30, which does not give the Republicans a two-thirds vote in any w ay. These figures, however, make no difference with the Opposition. They will continue to repeat the falseh oodf I t may be true, that bad the Bepublicans' all voted for submission, there were enough Democrats, voted fo r i f to have carried. N ew York Jou rn al Bararun’ s elephants had just finished the Newport glide and were coming down to the centre-pole in the Virginia reel With feet ever so much lighter than feathers they tripped fantastically through the money-musk Then the circus hand played them oft to their dressing-rooms. / T h e rin g was ba re; the audience expectant. No actor came out fo r a m om on t Then a fa iry in a close-fitting costume, sometimes w orn at the F rench bail o r the festival o f the Arion society, appeared o n the elevated plat fo rm and Btood under the trapeze. She had on a lavender costum e w hich fitted her like a lavender g lo v a T h e audience was rant and didn’ t m ind i t F ink ribbon s fluttered fro m her w a is t H er hair was flaxen, h er form lithe and deli cate. She p ut a p iece o f leather, dangling at the end o f a rope, in h er sm all m outh and was drawn n p to the trapeze. H ere she hung b y her heels and sustained in m id-air an actor, by holding in her teeth the free end o f a rop e tied around his body. H e weighed 175 pounds. She spun him around as i f he were as light as a feather. T hen she was tow ed in a basket to the top o f an inclined wire two hundred feet long, w hich extended fro m the ro o f on the Fourth avenne side to the ground at the Madi son'avenue entrance Fatting the end o f a leather strap attached to a puhey in h er m onth she flashed down the w ire tike a corn et H er Bpeed o f motion was fo r ty m iles an hour. A p istol was fired o . when she was within twen ty feet o f a large cushion two feet thick w ith which she collided. W hen she struck it the cushion was pushed hack two or threefeet and bent around her like a sh aw l T he wom an was called “Madame Ju n au t” A reporter having received h e r perm ission to interview h er entered" the actor’ s dressing room , w hich was filled with tumblers, acro bats, riders, p eople w ho h a d ju s t com e o ff and people who w e re getting ready to g o on. T h o clown sat m oodily o n one o f the the ele phants’ tubs and looked as gloom y as a m an w ho had ju st buried his mother-in-law. Madame Junaut sat in a group o f lad y riders with a b ig waterproof drawn close around hen. She had rosy cheeks and handsome blue eyes .an d was very pretty. “I bave lifted five mem weighing over seven hundred pounds” said she. “A n ordinary person can lift with their jaw s from thirty to forty pounds. The latter is so arranged that it gives three or four feet when I strike i t I f it did not I am afraid I should be dashed—bnt Well Hi the bipprodome at Faris I spun down a wire 320 feet long.” “D o y o u lik e y on r occupation?” ^Yes.
