This Newsletter...
...has been prepared by Lyn Millward. Since we no longer have a regular newsletter editor, members of
the NSBDC agreed to take turns producing a newsletter. At each meeting we ask for a volunteer to
produce the next issue, and I offered to do it this time. Remember, this is not a huge job: each volunteer
is free to do the newsletter as she pleases; there is no set form. Even if all you want to do is a one-page
meeting report and notice of the next meeting, this is fine—the important thing is that the Bulletin is
produced after each meeting and sent to all members.
The February 2003 Meeting
Thanks to Rebecca Douglass for hosting, at her home, our February 2003 meeting to celebrate "The
Lady in Red." Barbie of course is the perfect Valentine! One might think that a meeting of three Barbie
enthusiasts is no meeting at all; but if you count all the Barbies in Red who were present, it was very
well attended. Even if it was just a Valentine's Party, it was lots of fun, as we set our dolls on Rebecca's
wonderful wooden fashion runway, an excellent way to display Barbie to full advantage. We enjoyed
food and tea (even Rooibos tea which Rebecca brought back from the Netherlands), and setting our dolls
in different poses for Rebecca's camera.
We met at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 8th—Rebecca Douglass, Sandi Little, and Lyn Millward.
February is a stormy month and a difficult one for many of our far- flung members who have to travel
the highways to attend. You will, of course, be able to see some of the Barbies present in the photos
here, but as you know, Barbie is a doll who is best appreciated in person.
Sandi displayed a new (and very appealing) Betty Boop doll; an FAO exclusive Silkstone Barbie,
"Ravishing in Rouge" from the Fashion Model Collection; "Hollywood Cast Party" Barbie, fifth in the
series; and a Fashion Avenue 'silver and strawberries' dress, which came with sunglasses, shoes and
purse, and lip gloss (other dresses in the series are decorated with cherries and watermelon).

Lyn's dolls included (left to right): "Winter Splendor," an Avon special; Jenny by Takara from Japan,
dressed in red and white kimono; and "Evening Flame," a Sears’s pink-box special from 1996.
Rebecca's display included two 1963 Midge dolls, one in Sheath Sensation (#986, 1961-64), the other
dressed as Drum Majorette (#0875, 1964-5). A 1962 Ken wore his King Arthur costume (#0773, 19645) and an American Girl looked lovely in Benefit Performance (#1667, 1966). Ponytail Barbie (#5) was
dressed in Magnificent (#1646, 1965), and another (not shown) with her ponytail in a neat, tiny braid,
wore her bathing suit—red, of course. Also not shown in this picture were a Bubble Cut Brunette
appearing in Lunch Date (#1600, 1964), and a Fraternity Dance dress (#1638, 1965).

SHOW AND TELL: How we admired the new Gay Parisienne Barbie, a reproduction of a 1959 doll
and fashion. She's glamorous in a blue bouffant or bubble dress—and our Sandi is so young she couldn't
remember anyone wearing such dresses. (Goodness, Sandi, I wore one – vintage of course – to last
year's Christmas dinner dance at SMU! I just know, however, I was not so elegant as Barbie is in hers.)
We saw a Barbie Fashion Model Collection Accessory Pack, which comes with a beautiful periwinkle
blue dress, a mannequin, and three pairs of shoes in little shoeboxes. Exquisite! We looked through a
new book, The Collectors' Encyclopaedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives and More, and admired Sandi's
Gene dolls, "Hello Hollywood Hello" and "Destiny." (These two are for sale or trade—contact Sandi if
you are interested.)
OUR CHRISTMAS PROJECT: Sandi reported that she donated ten Barbie dolls to Coverdale at
Christmas on behalf of our club. Remember, our Christmas project is on- going, and it is never too soon
to collect those thrift store dolls to refurbish and redress for next December. It is important that our club
continues with this charitable effort. (See page 6 for more information on Coverdale.)
A Thank You from Coverdale
On behalf of Coverdale Centre, a sincere thank you for your generous donation of ten
Barbie dolls and accessories. They are beautifully packaged. Barbie is still a very
popular gift for little girls. We distributed them all so the girls were touched by your
generosity this Christmas (and) your contribution to Coverdale's Christmas project.

cold and white winter. The meeting theme will be "Spring Flowers Bring Flowers."

News from our Yarmouth Member, Lisa DeViller
Hi to everyone. I have been so busy lately; I haven't really been into Barbie. I do enjoy getting the
newsletter and hearing how everybody is doing and what's going on. It seems every time there is a
meeting I have either been to Halifax the month before, or have to go the month after. I have to go in
March and May, and will miss the April meeting. I will get there eventually! The baby is growing like
a weed and keeps me busy. We are still in Yarmouth and still renovating. Some times I don't have time
to turn around.
(Riley Conner was born October 25, 2001, and weighed 9 lbs, 9 oz. This picture was taken last March.)

An Introduction to Coverdale – Our Christmas Charity
Coverdale, a non-profit, community-based organization, provides support and specialized services to women
experiencing the justice system in the Halifax Regional Municipality. This is their 20th year of service to the
Halifax community. The objects of Coverdale are:
To contact as many women as possible upon entry into the criminal justice systems in order to provide support
services;
To lower the incidence of crime through education and prevention programs;
To provide a service to women in contact with the justice system by carrying out charitable/non-profit work in the
fields of prevention, rehabilitation and social services with special reference to the female offender and to
coordinate with other agencies in support of this object.
The following are the programs that Coverdale is currently supporting:
Court work service (their primary program): In 1999, Court workers assisted 1,795 women appearing before the
courts with information on the terminology and process of criminal proceedings, advocacy, legal and community
referrals, and emotional support. Court workers also assisted women victims of violence through applications of
peace bonds and restraining orders, helped women witnesses, and supported women who were parents and
partners of accused persons.
Fine Options: Coverdale has been designated a Work Resource Center by the Department of Justice for their Fine
Options Program. This program provides an alternative method of fine payment that is worked off in the
community. Coverdale develops and organizes the work placements.
Counseling Services: The two social workers on staff provide women with counseling in order to assist them
toward healing and growth, thereby improving the lives of the women and their families.
Institutional Services: Coverdale provides support for incarcerated women serving time in the Halifax
Correctional Center and the Nova Institution. The services include visitations, supervision during temporary
leaves of absence, counseling, information and support, pre-release planning, and Christmas baskets.
Speaking engagements: The Executive Director spends time presenting to groups and organizations in order to
raise the profile of Coverdale. In a program in the school system, she counsels young women about prostitution
recruitment and how to avoid being drawn into the lifestyle.

Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, and the "Original Six" members were Danielle Graham, Toby Jodrey, Toni
LaRusic, Lyn Millward, Heather Munro, and Val Smith.

BITS OF NEWS FROM MFD
There will be four new guys in the My Scene line:
Bryant, Hudson, Rive r, and Sutton (whatever
happened to Tom, Dick, and Harry?). One will be
African-American; the others will be a blonde, a
brunette, and a red-head.
Lady Camille follows Mlle. Isabelle in the Portrait
Collection. Comes in a package reminiscent of
19th C shadow boxes – resembles a framed 3-D
painting with backdrop depicting a stately salon.
Celebration Barbie this year is replaced by Snow
Queen Barbie (name subject to change); and will
probably be a Direct Mail doll.
Brenda Starr (by Effanbee, now owned by The
Tonner Doll Co.), is the same size as Tyler and
fashions are interchangeable between the two
dolls.
Tatu Barbie, which follows Mbili as the third doll in the Treasures of Africa Collection by Byron Lars,
will be available at the end of March.
Midge's parents join the Happy Family in a "Kitchen and Grandparents Gift set." This includes
Grandmother and Grandfather dolls as well as a house that can be turned into a carrying case. It's
themed to a holiday dinner at the Grandparents' house and includes 63 accessories. (Did you get your
Pregnant Midge?)
Aviator Barbie, produced exclusively for US Military stores, will be available in May through My
Favourite Doll at $45 Cdn. Her flight-suit and jacket are described as authentic-style GI gear, and the
shades on her helmet flip down. In keeping with the new smarter Barbie (no more "Math is Difficult"
dolls!), this Barbie is said to be "A top graduate of military flight school (and) one of the best and
brightest. Not only is she in top physical condition, she's aced subjects like science and engineering."
New for 2003, the"Thee I Wed" Gene doll is dressed in a 1950s wedding gown.
For the first time ever, the Barbie Collectibles catalogue is available for collectors to purchase. Mattel
has upgraded the look and feel of the 2003 catalogue to give it a coffee-table book image (although it
does have a soft-cover). The photography is said to be astounding. While expensive, it is a must-have
for the die- hard collector. (It is not clear if this 44-page catalogue is available for purchase on its own,
or if it is available only for those who purchase the Fashion Model Wardrobe Case.)
Finally, if you like African American fashion dolls, do take a look at MDF's new "African Legends
Collection" by Integrity!
