April - Rock Hill Area Shag Club
April 2016
ISSUE 108 kch
Dean Baker
President of the Rock Hill
Area Shag Club
Hello Fellow RHASC Members,
April is here… almost time for SOS! I think I’m ready for a vacation at the beach with
all of my friends. I hope you are getting ready too.
The March party was our first regular party since January. It was nice to get back to
our regular party night for a change. Debra and the Social Committee had some awesome food and Roger Holcomb played some great music. I don’t have numbers yet for
attendance. The crowd seemed to be smaller than normal, but we still had a really good
time. It turned out to be a relaxing fun-filled night.
Before the party we held a business meeting. One of the most significant pieces of information from the business meeting pertained to the upcoming HOFF party. We are
expanding the party this year and will have two DJs playing. We will occupy at least two
ballrooms at the hotel as well as the bar. Tommy and the social committee need all of
our help to get sponsors for gaming tables, auction item donations, and prizes for gaming tickets. We seem to make the most money from liquor baskets. We need folks to
get together in small groups to put together liquor baskets and other auction items.
Last year we raised almost $5000.00. This year we would like to get that number up
considerably. Also, don’t forget to get your raffle tickets for the TV to be given away
at the party. We would also like to get as many people out selling tickets for the TV as
possible.
1
For all of you going down to SOS, don’t forget we will have our Shooter party in the
back room of Fat Harold’s on Thursday night, April 21, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We
will have Chicken Bog as well as a large assortment of free shooters. Make sure to tell
all of your friends.
Our next party will be held on April 16th. This will be our pre SOS party. If you haven’t
already gone down to the beach for SOS, you will want to come out and get ready for
SOS with us. Our DJ will be our very own Frank Price.
As always I would like to encourage you to come to our Friday night Meet and Greet
sessions... We always have such a good time on Friday nights, you don’t want to miss
out.
Ronnie still has SOS cards for sale.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our club events. I encourage each of you to visit
our web site at http://www.rock-hill-area-shag-club.com/. Take a look at the calendar
to keep up with upcoming events. You can also access the newsletters, party pictures,
and also learn more about our club.
See you on the dance floor!

OUR JUNIORS TAKE ON THE NATIONALS
by Debbie Brown
On Thursday, March 10, the Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach opened its doors for
the 33rd National Shag Dance Competition. It was standing room only. There were
five divisions in the competition - Master, Seniors, Non-Pros, Juniors, and Pros. Let me
first say, that out of all divisions represented, the one I would not have wanted to judge
would definitely have been the JUNIORS. What a terrific group of young people - on and off the floor! We can all be
very proud. Our dance is in very good hands. There were (8) Junior I couples, who ranged in ages from 8 - 14 and
(10) Junior II couples, who ranged in ages from 15 - 20. Out of these 18 couples, we had 4 couples from our Charlotte
Area Junior Shaggers group, with three of them being kids and grandkids of our RH members. Each couple danced
Thursday night, being sure to complete the five required steps during their routine. Then again Friday, where it is
"anything goes". You are bound to say "WOW - did you see that?" I tell you when the juniors took the floor, they
raised the bar and the roof. They were just beyond words. Saturday night began with a tribute to our veterans, which
is always very special. Then the cut was made and the finalists danced once more, giving it their all. Before the winners were announced, scholarships were awarded to several juniors from the Beth Mitchell Scholarship Fund. This
was just wonderful that "shag" could help in furthering a juniors education and future. We are very proud to say that
Jason Long and Lauren Cookman, who are the grandson of Danny & Linda Long and daughter of Duncan & Ruth
Cookman, placed 4th in the Junior I division. Congratulations to them both for a fantastic job. We are so very proud
of all of our dancers and the hard work they put into their dancing. It takes hours of practice for a competition of this
magnitude. You are all to be congratulated for a job well done. They are all such a terrific group of kids and truly love
to dance.
We also cannot forget those folks who work so hard week after week with our kids to help make them better and move
foreward. Ashley and Tobitha Stewart took over the Charlotte Area Junior Shaggers in September after Bill Bateman
and Fran Taylor decided to retire. They give freely of their time each week at Lynn's to teach our kids the fundamentals of shag and help them move to the next level. One other special person, who works endlessly with kids and shares
our dance all around the round, is Brennar Goree. What a terrific opportunity for our kids to work with these wonderful pros! Thank you Ashley, Tobitha, and Brennar for your time, talent, and dedication to our kids. Everyone in the
"shag world" is such a wonderful group of people, and we are all so thankful to have our children and grandchildren
experience the special bonds they are forming.
Congratulations once again to all those who participated in nationals. You all did a terrific job. Looking forward to
Grand Nationals in Atlanta in May.
Special Congratulations to the winners:
Junior I: Trey Henley & Lizzie Batten
Junior II: Jackson Batten & Karlee Martin
Masters: Montine & Connie Bridges
Seniors: Gene & Nancy Pope
Non-Pros: Jeremy Webb & Kalin Ellis
Pros: Sam West & Kristal Taylor Davis
Enjoy the photos below.
Thank you all on behalf of our juniors for your support.
