One of my favorite books is called The Passionate
Teacher: A Practical Guide by Robert Fried. This book
transformed my life as an educator when I first came
across it as a novice teacher in the late 1990’s. It argues
that teachers who truly want to make a difference in
the lives of their students must embody and display one
thing: passion . . . “More than knowledge of subject
matter. More than a variety of teaching techniques.
More than being well-organized or friendly or funny or
fair. It’s passion” (16).
I would bet that each and every one of us could tell
a story right now of one such passionate teacher who
awakened in us a desire to learn that we had never
before experienced . . . one such passionate teacher who
challenged us to be our best ALL the time—not just in
his or her classroom . . . one such passionate teacher who
continues to influence us as parents, and professionals
even today . . . one such passionate teacher who, simply
put, changed our lives. Do you remember that teacher?
For me, there are several, but the most notable was a
high school English teacher I had named Mitch Billings.
Above all else, Mr. Billings was a storyteller, a spinner
of yarns, a raconteur. He was as spellbinding as he was
hilarious; he was the most interesting person I had ever
come in contact with when I entered his Sophomore
English class in 1985. His reputation preceded him,
but I still found myself wondering why this man of
such experience, intelligence, and wit was teaching high
school English. Surely, he could be a wealthy entertainer,
successful statesman, or world traveler if he wanted. But
a teacher . . . it seemed to me at the time to be such a
waste. Today I know that the real waste would have been
if I had never met Mr. Billings, whose passion for my
learning instilled a confidence in me that I still possess.
Passionate teachers like Mr. Billings who eschew
otherwise lucrative careers outside of education in favor
of a unique devotion to learning are at the heart of
Presbyterian School. Robert Fried suggests that “of those
teachers who inspired us most, we remember what they
cared about, and that they cared about us and the person
we might become . . . It is this quality of caring about
ideas and values, this fascination with the potential for
growth within people, this depth and fervor about doing
things well and striving for excellence, that comes the
closest to what it means to be a passionate teacher” (17).
I am confident as the Headmaster of this terrific school
that each of our teachers thrives on an abundance of
this passion, but here I will just give you three examples.
Beta teacher, Carrie Steele, shows her passion when
she dresses up as a different character in the books her
students are studying in order to make those books come
alive for her emerging readers. Laurie Robertson, our
Lower School music teacher, doesn’t let a fire drill keep
her students from singing: beautiful 3rd grade voices can
be heard on the lawn of the School even over the din
of the screeching fire alarm as students hastily exit the
building. Finally, Kathy Webb unleashes her passion
for 4th Century Eastern European culture on her 7th
graders by giving them a firsthand look at art, history,
and culture when she takes them on walking tours of the
local Byzantine Fresco Chapel, the Rothko Chapel, and
the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
When we receive generous and sacrificial gifts—like
those to the 2010-2011 record-breaking Annual Fund—
they go toward supporting the passionate teachers
who are at the center of our culture and at the heart of
our mission. When you invest in our School, you are
investing in the passion of our teachers, and we think the
return on that investment is limitless. Thank you again
for your stalwart support of this good place-where we
teach and learn with passion every day.

A Year of Stars and Planets
The Bauer Foundation granted $25,000 to
Presbyterian School for a yearlong, interdisciplinary
study of the “Stars and Planets” for Alpha-8th grade
students. Each grade level will focus on a topic within
“Stars and Planets” during the 2011-2012 school year.
Early Childhood - Earth
Kindergarten - The Sun
1st Grade - Constellations
2nd Grade - The Moon
3rd Grade - Study of the Solar System and Planets
4th Grade - Harnessing the Power of the Stars
5th Grade - Navigating by Stars
6th Grade - The Moon
7th Grade - Life in Space
8th Grade - Space Missions
Teachers are intentionally developing student activities
and experiences within their “Stars and Planets” topic,
including:
• Building Solar Powered Cars with test drive
• Rocket Day (building rockets, tracking launch
and distance traveled, creating Hertzprung-Russell
Diagrams, analyzing data)
• Demonstrating Plate Tectonics on the Moon
(compare and contrast to Earth plates movement)
• Creating Moon Rock Dig at the Outdoor
Education Campus
• Making and Using Sun Dial
SAVE THE DATE for Presbyterian School’s “A Starry,
Starry Night” on February 21, 2012. All students
and their families are invited to come to the Outdoor
Education Campus for an evening under the stars.
Be on the lookout for more information on this event.
We look forward to having these outdoor features:
• Presentations by an Astronaut and Astronomer
• Telescope viewing of the night sky by the Fort Bend
Astronomy Club
• Portable planetarium with program for young
children
• Scaled model of solar system set up on the large
field
• A scale to calculate student weight on other planets
• “Stars and Planets”discovery activities
• Student work featuring “Stars and Planets” projects
While the Outdoor Education Campus has been
the central location for most of the student activities
facilitated by this grant, off-campus field trips have also
been planned to visit NASA, the Houston Museum of
Natural Science and the Challenger Center at George
Observatory.

The Carnival was a huge success, featuring 10 giant inflatables, 15 Fun Fair Games, Cake Walk, Karaoke, face painting,
a rock climbing wall, Art Car and iPad Raffles, trike rides, 5 & Dime store and sweets galore! This exciting new event raised
over $70,000 for the school’s operating fund. From volunteering to work a booth to selling raffle tickets to underwriting, we
want to thank all the parents, teachers and administrators in the school community who participated. Thank you especially to
our Carnival Co-chairs, Cathy Trask and Deb Dade, for their incredible vision and execution of this first-time event.
